About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- tztoy0 contributionsgreat tour!I've done 2 tours with ETT (1 day to Debre Libanos will be reviewed separately). The 3 day tour to Dankil was guided by the great Hope (Tesfa) and of course the wonderful drivers, chef and local guides. Hope managed to work around all the different needs and level of fitness of the group participants and always managed to stay cheerful, full of stories with a huge, open heart to all. A company is judged by the way they handle mis-haps, and although I had no problems, I saw ETT manage to solve airplane tickets problems, car breakdowns, storms changing itinerary and political unrest for other travelers in our group. Their communications were always fast and reliable, and together with the ability to solve most changes in the tour, it makes them one of the best options (especially in the desert). Please note- they can help with accommodation, pick up/drop off and domestic flights. Although they have numerous offices, payment must be made in their Addis's office, so make sure, while planning your itinerary, to drop by, before tour/flightWritten September 29, 2024
- tztoy0 contributionsGreat day tour with Haben (ETT)Went on 2 tours with ETT (Danakil will be reviewed separately). the day tour to Debre Libanos was amazing, with numerous Gelada monkeys to add to the miraculous experience. my guide was Haben (+251934824414 ). An amazing, funny guide, passionate about his country and a steady hand to use, when walking down the slippery Portuguese bridge :) It was a great and ease start to my travelling in Ethiopia. Definitely a great day tour from Addis! especially if you want to see the monkeys, but cannot go to Semien mountainsWritten September 29, 2024
- KOTA K0 contributionsThe professional plannermy guide "Haben" made his best effort. even though the original plan has suspended by an official travel guidance and alert, he proposed an alternative plan. I had a lot of fun moments in Addis Ababa. Introducing history, driving in Merkato and talking are very professional. lunch and coffee break are also highlights. everyone should enjoy the time.Written September 9, 2024

Thanks. We had a wonderful experience with ETT Travel located in Addis Ababa with satelite offices in major atraction cities of Ethiopia. Actually we just make up our mind to visit one week in Ethiopia on our vacation from United Arab Emirates. We both are working together here since 10 years but we did not have any idea and plan what to do there. Me and my best friend Peter from Italy visit first time ETT Tours &Travel in Ethiopia just book tour and some adventure trip organized by them. Ms Samrawit and Sisay are very young entrepreneur in travel and tourism. I wish them all the best.

It was great to travel with Ett. Definitely not easy to organise this big trip to one of the most extreme parts of our planet but they've done pretty good job.

My family and I (Wife and two boys 17 and 19) booked this adventure with ETT as they started off responsive and seemed to offer what we wanted. All flights were booked but it was clear that the hotels were booked late, so the lodge I asked for, and was told we had, was not actually booked and we ended up in the Amoro Lodge in Adigrat (great food, but hard beds and no hot water).
Our tour started in Lalibela visiting the churches over two days. I don't think you need any more that this. Lalibela Lodge was rudimentary, showers hot and beds OK. Food was OK but having Ethiopian cooks making western food was a failure. No local fair offered. But...we didn't get sick, which is our yardstick for food in Ethiopia.
We then flew to Axum, had lunch but didn't get to drive by the Axum Obelisks, even though we asked the guide and driver to do so. Here we started deviating from the itinerary as we simply didn't have enough tie to see all the places ETT had listed. Should have taken an earlier flight from Lalibela to Axum. Monastery at Adwa and the Temple at Yeha were amazing. We arrived in Adigrat around 2000 expecting to stay at the Geralta Lodge, but ended up in the Amoro Lodge - good food, average beds and no hot water. Rudimentary breakfast.
Drove to Geralta where we visited Abuna Yemata Guh - a good climb and very exciting due to the complete lack of anything safety related. Then to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. All three were amazing and well worth the visit.
The Dankil tour was at the end and conducted in reverse order to the itinerary, which is OK, but we were not briefed about what we were doing or where we were going, which is all very disconcerting. The Dankil tour including Enta Ale (volcano) is definitely a two day trip crammed into three days. We stopped every hour to have coffee, or look at a view and two hours for lunch, to then be rushed through the attraction. Base camps on the salt lake looked like a rubbish tip, food was good, beds were like hammocks (but strangely comfortable). Our group was over 35 people, so setting up for bed was a bit like a demolition derby with the 4WD vying for position. Grubby sheets and sleeping bags at the base camp and the volcano. Drivers spoke little English but at least we were all in one car. Do this tour first as you'll need a shower before you return to the airport to fly out. We had the same issues as the other average posts.
In general, Ethiopia has so much tourist potential, but the operators are only after the money - as quoted by one guide when we confronted him about how disorganised the tour was. When we noted that the majority of the drivers didn't speak English, and we weren't briefed on what was happening, he replied that 'you are in Ethiopia you know'. True, but the tour group could all speak English, not Amharic or Tigreyan.
Recommendations for travelers: use a different company, but if you can't, make sure they have booked the accommodation and flights before you pay. If doing Dankil and volcano, do it first as you'll need a hotel with a shower before jumping back on the plane. BYO gas mask if you do the volcano - we were told at the last minute to bring a mask - surgical would be fine....it wasn't. The whole group sucked in a lung full of sulfur dioxide gas (I think) which left us coughing and a burning sensation in the back of the nose. BYO sleeping bag. Get the driver to stop at a bottle shop to get some Ethiopian produced Ouzo (about $3 USD per bottle). It tastes great with coke and better than the wine on offer in some of the restaurants. Bring a sense of adventure, and keep calm when things stuff up - as the guide said, this is Ethiopia!
