We are a family of two adults and two teenagers who booked the historic Northern circuit without knowing much about Ethiopia. The guides were knowledgeable, professional and on time every single time. The vehicles were all well-maintained and clean and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves during the trip. We hope to come back to this beautiful country again and will not hesitate to engage Yama tours again.

I was a solo, female traveller, visiting Ethiopia for the first time. The itinerary allowed me to get the most of my seven days and see lots of local life. I changed the trip slightly half way through and this was accommodated with ease by Yama tours. I was even treated to lunch on the last day by the company. I felt safe and secure and learnt so much about Ethiopia from their knowledgeable guides. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone travelling to this beautiful country.

We had an excellent time travelling with Yama Tours on this northern adventure. We learned much about Ethiopia and saw sights we never imagined. We sat with Galadriel baboons, saw the rock churches, and experienced some of the culture and history of this part of Ethiopia. Shato, Daniel and other guides were very helpful and informative. We felt safe, enjoyed the food, and the accommodations. We recommend Yama Tours and are grateful for the service they provided. Thank you.

Very good tour company.

We did tours of Lalibella, Gondar, and Harar. The tour guides and destinations were excellent. Lalibela was dream-like. The Blue Nile Falls were fantastic but VERY muddy (pack accordingly, if you can). The Lake Tana monasteries were fascinating. Harar was incredible, with a great guide. The hotels were either good or the best available in the town (not every town has a good hotel--especially Harar, check out the Lonely Planet for some entertaining reading on this). Our driver from Harar-Addis was fantastic (even though the drive itself wasn't--more below--but that wasn't his fault at all).

The only suggestion I'd make:
We flew one direction to Harar, and Yama recommended we drive back to Addis to see the landscape. I would recommend flying both directions. We had ZERO bad experiences in Lalibella, Gondar, and Addis (walking EVERYWHERE in Addis with no one bothering us), but the ride back from Harar was really bad. The roads were okay, actually, but it was: 1. very long (9 hours or so), 2. on a festival day, 3. most negatively, full of ridiculous police stops (literally over 20 of them) with, to put it politely, varying degrees of professionalism (some of the "cops" (many un-uniformed) were clearly high, actively chewing chaat). So, fly both directions and avoid all of this! And the landscape is fantastic all over Ethiopia, so this drive isn't worth it, if you can afford to fly, and we'd seen quite a bit of it on the drive from Dire Dawa.

But I'd highly recommend Yama Tours, all of the above destinations, and Ethiopia!

Our tour for two spanned Lalibela, Siemen mountains, Gonder and Bahir Dar. Although our primary motivation derived from Ethiopia's formative and fascinating history, our experience offered insight as to how people live and cope now. Guides, agents and drivers all very competent and kind to us 'oldies, able also to cope at short notice with exigencies arising from stochastic behaviour on the part of Ethiopian Airlines ( be prepared!). Make sure you stay at the Lalibela Mountain Lodge: the view (pictured) is worth the trip in itself.

There are few words to describe the experience we had with Yama Tours, but I will try my best. Several months ago, my husband and I decided to travel to Ethiopia (and Zanzibar) to visit the monolithic churches and to see the beauty the country has to offer. I also have a close friend from Addis Ababa and always promised her that we would meet up in Ethiopia.

I specifically sought to find a tour company that was owned and operated by Ethiopians— and in Yama Tours, I found that.

We flew from SFO-DC-Addis Ababa on December 14, 2018. Upon arrival to Addis, Tarik had arranged for us to fly directly to Bahir Dar. We arrived to Bahir Dar and were greeted by our driver- who would spend the next few days with us. He was amazing- and although there was a slight language barrier, we were still able to communicate and have a great time together (I should also mention that, at the end of our time together, he gave me and my husband a few parting souvenir gifts. We were so thankful!)

In Bahir Dar, we traveled to the Blue Nile Falls and then to the various monasteries on Lake Tana. This was an amazing experience and the boat operator who took us around Lake Tana was incredibly sweet and welcoming. For anyone interested in unique souvenirs that you cannot find in Addis or even in Lalibela, I highly recommend spending your money with one of the vendors located outside one of the monasteries on Lake Tana (These are also very remote areas which don’t see many tourists- spend your money here!)

While in Bahir Dar, we stayed at the Blue Nile hotel which had good accommodations, but we weren’t too fond of the hotel restaurant food.

From Bahir Dar, we drove to Gonder. Although the drive is several hours long, I would highly recommend “overlanding” instead of flying, because it’s a great way to see remote areas of the country.

Gonder was amazing! Tarik arranged for us to stay at the Goha hotel which was beautiful with good food and an amazing view. In Gonder we visited the castles, ate at “Four Sisters” and did the Simien Mountain Hike (pro tip- pack a lunch!)— all amazing! We were even fortunate enough to see hundreds of Gelada monkeys. Not to mention, the tour guides and the park rangers who were incredible. They really “made” the trip— we had great conversations with them during the trek.

From Gonder we flew to Lalibela (by far the most amazing destination! Truly indescribable) The Maribela Hotel that Tarik arranged was awesome—great views, the best service, and likely the best Ethiopian food that we had while we were in the country (Ask for Aiello at the hotel restaurant! So friendly).

Germa, our local guide in Lalibela, was so knowledgeable and we really had a lot of fun with him. We visited over 11 monolithic/rock churches with Germa and overall had a great time. We even hung out at a local bar with Germa and our driver after the tour one night.

The entire trip was organized with perfection. The guides and drivers were all professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely wanted to share the history and beauty of Ethiopia with us. I cannot thank Tarik enough for all of the work he put into organizing this trip. Prior to our arrival in Ethiopia, Tarik answered all of our questions and emails expeditiously and was in constant contact via WhatsApp once we arrived in the country. Thank you Tarik!

(If anyone has questions about our time in Ethiopia or Yama Tour- send me a message!)

I started planning for this trip 2 months ago. After some research, I sent emails to several tour operators with good ratings on review websites. I received some responses, but Yama Tours’ were prompt and right to the point.

I compiled a list of places that id like to see and do from youtube videos, blogs and advise from friends who travelled to Ethiopia. So I had a pretty good idea about what I needed.

I checked Yama Tours’ website for the closest package they offer for what I need and after a mere 40 emails 😊 between me, my companion and Tarik the Yama Tours’ CEO we settled for an itinerary for our trip. I honestly have no idea where he found the time to reply to all my questions.

We visited Bahir Dar with Tana Lake and its monasteries, Gondar, Siemian Mountains, Lalibela and finally Harar.

My friends have warned me not expect too much punctuality and to be patient when in Ethiopia in general but I have to say, not a single appointment was missed or even delayed, the guides were excellent! They read us correctly and custom adjusted the visits to our interests and physical abilities.

This was my first visit to eastern Africa and to be honest my expectations were not very high, but I was very wrong, every day I collected memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

One advice when travelling to Ethiopia that I wish I knew in time was to make sure that your flights in or out of the country be with Ethiopian Airlines because you will end up saving hundreds of dollars on internal flights if you do that.

Last month I travelled to Ethiopia, and I cannot stop raving about my trip to everyone back home.
The landscape was beautiful, the people were warm and welcoming, and the history/architecture were remarkable.

From the beginning, everything was easy and well organized. We wanted to do a modified version of the 7 Day trip/North historic route, and Mr. Tarik was extremely amenable when accommodating all of our requests. From the quick email responses, to giving us general practical information in advance, we already felt very comfortable before we even landed in Addis.

All the guides and drivers speak English proficiently, so the conversations flowed easily. The guides were more than happy to share information about Ethiopia, as well as giving insights to the culture and history. If you’re lucky enough to have Tila as your guide around Gondar, consider yourself very lucky—he consistently went above and beyond our expectations to make sure we had an amazing time. Both he and Sayid were extremely thoughtful, attentive, and engaging…it just felt really relaxed and fun, like your friends were taking you around and showing you their city.

Would definitely recommend Yama for their professionalism and for curating high quality, authentic experiences!
