- 802koenv0 contributionsGreat way to see Dar!We did a walking tour with Afri Roots and loved it! We've had many guides in East-Africa and have had some disappointing experiences so we were a bit reluctant to go on this tour at first, but our guide, Ferdinand, was absolutely wonderful! He told us lots of things about the city and answered all our questions about Tanzania sincerely. We really enjoyed to see the fish market up close which we could not have done without a guide. If you have a free morning, go on this tour!Written October 23, 2024
- lepiclisa0 contributionsDar behind the scenes! Absolute recommendationMust do if you really want to go ‚behind the scenes‘, explore the ‚real‘ Dar all while supporting a local business. The ‚Reality Tour‘ opens your eyes to Swahili everyday life, culture and community, it’s very interesting and a humbling experience. Jerry, our guide, was so knowledgable, considerate and always took greatest care of us. He even took us to his neighborhood and we met his mom. Organisation was flawless, friendly and super professional. Most special tour, go for it!Written January 29, 2024

I recently went on a bike tour in Dar es Salaam with Afri Roots, and it was absolutely wonderful. I wouldn't want to have missed it! It was a great decision to book directly with Afri Roots. The tour started at 09:00, and when I contacted the company, they responded right away.
The tour took us to places I never would have discovered otherwise, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the locals and the vibrant atmosphere of the city. We had the opportunity to try many local foods and drinks, which was an incredible experience.
This tour was truly one of a kind, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore Dar es Salaam in an authentic and engaging way.

We discovered a completely unknown Dar es Salam together with Afri Roots and our guide Jerry! We got to know interesting neighborhoods of the town we woud otherwise not have visited, Jerry told us a lot of interesting facts and stories about everyday life in an African metropolis as Dar es Salam. We enjoyed being introduced into regional coffee ceremonies and other interesting small and smaller businesses. A unique experience with a dedicated, charming and well informed guide. Thank you, Jerry! Highly recommended to all visitors of Dar es Salam interested in life beyond the city centre and the beaches.

We did the Reality Tour via bajaj given we were doing the tour with children. The guide was very knowledgeable, and we learned and saw a lot that we had not seen in a city we live in. The bajaj drivers drove safely. And they personalized it to make it suit our family's needs. Would highly recommend when in Dar es Salaam.

Alone with my guide, Jerry, we biked through multiple Swahili neighborhoods, including the marketplace and his home. All my questions were welcomed, whether historical or silly. A unique experience that both let me discover a lifestyle in Dar es Salaam I wouldn't have otherwise known, and Afriroots supports all the small businesses I visited.
The helmet could have been a little cleaner, but the bike was in good enough condition and the time we biked alongside cars was limited.

Great tour, great guide. Very interesting experience, highly recommend. 12 km bike tour of different neighborhoods with many stops in small shops etc along the way. Great way to experience parts of Dar es Salaam, where tourists would not normally go.

We really enjoyed our guided tour of Dar es Salaam! Was really informative and a tour where you get close to the local people who makes you feel welcome. Also nice to get to try the different local food and drinks. The guide Jerry is really good guide.

We wanted to take this tour because it sounded as an interesting way to see the city. First we tried to contact the company Afriroots directly via their own booking system on their homepage, and also tried to send them an email directly, but didn't get any response on either. Finally we booked the tour through TripAdvisor. The tour was confirmed and payed for immediately and we also got a receipt via mail. On the day of the tour, they didn't show up. We called the number listed for the company, and the man who answered, told us they are having problems with bookings through TripAdvisor. He said they don't get informed of the bookings and also don't get paid. He suggested that we contact TripAdvisor for a refund, and then pay the company up front for a new tour. I asked about the missing responses on the emails I sent, and he told me they also have problems with their email system. This sounded too scetchy. As much as we would have liked to join the tour, we didn't want to risk ending up paying double for nothing. So now we have paid for a tour we didn't get. Afriroots are telling us to contact TripAdvisor for a refund, but TripAdvisor refers to the tour operator Afriroots. So now we don't know how to get our money back for a tour we never got.

I feel privileged to have been given a window into parts of Dar Es Salaam that I would never have seen, let alone be invited into. We saw and met all kinds of people and entered a variety of small (and I mean SMALL) neighborhood businesses. It was utterly fascinating. And Afriroots went out of their way to make it easy for us to arrive at the meeting place, arranging a taxi to pick us up and then take us to other places we wanted to visit afterwards.

This tour is much better as it described. If you really want to feel Dar es Salaam, just go and try with them.
Jeffrey was out guide who also lives in one of the area he showed. So we had very authentic experience. The bile tour is 12km, but with many stops, so you wont feel. Overall 3-3,5hs but with bit of coffee, sweets and refreshments.
I really enjoyed it.
