- Baderle160 contributionsGreat romantic experienceAmazing trip ! It was nice to stand in the middle of the bay and having so many turtles around. The two guys working there are super friendly and helpful too!Written August 8, 2024
- S7245AEjenniferr0 contributionsGorgeous views!Amazing! It was really easy to pick up the kayaks. They set up a rack on the car for transport to the beach. The beach isn't crowded (at least on a Monday) and the kayak around the island is absolutely gorgeous. The hike on the island is rocky, make sure you bring the right shoes for hiking and climbing on rocks.Written July 23, 2024
- Aimee G0 contributionsUnique experience in OahuWhat a unique experience in Oahu. We loved the easy kayak to Mokoli'i. I highly recommend water shoes for the hike once you get there. We attempted in sandals and were not successful in getting to the top. Bring a cooler for waters and snacks if you plan to chill for a bit.Written March 30, 2024
- kevinmA2582PD0 contributionsFantastic guided kayak tour, even in not so good weather!First day on Oahu and the weather was cloudy and off / on rainy but that didn't dampen our tour. Rob was a terrific tour guide for my wife and me, helping us with kayak technique, encouragement and leading us around the numerous coral reefs in the area to land on Moku Nui. We even got to see a couple of sea turtles during our paddle. Lunch was provided - fresh, warm burritos and delicious shave ice to cap off the tour once we returned. Highly recommend taking the guided tour instead of doing it on your own, especially if you are new to kayaking and / or Oahu. The only thing that would have made the trip better was a little bit of sun ...Written March 20, 2024
- 699cynthia0 contributionsGreat rental option in KailuaWe rented snorkel gear from Active Oahu Tours. They were super easy to work with; it was great to be able to reserve online and our gear was ready to go when we swung by in the morning. Gear was in good shape and well priced.Written March 17, 2024

- JCKBruce0 contributionsEasy RentalHad a great experience using this company. Easy loading and the person helping us gave us a lot of information for our activity including a map which was very helpful. There was a mix up with 1 of our paddles and they refunded 1/2 our money. I will use them again for my next adventure.Written September 17, 2023
- Traveler503528885410 contributionsflexible and understanding employees made experience a breezeBrad and Micheal were super helpful with being flexible and understanding with the whole reservation. Helped set up and made the whole experience as smooth as possible. Although they couldn't deliver the kayak right to the beach due to new regulations, they were great with adapting and making the experience as easy as possible with loading the kayak onto my car and securing it. They even allowed the reservation time to be flexible and not only let me pick up the kayak after the designated time, but let us keep the kayak for the whole day as opposed to the 3 hour window I initially reserved. I understand that the company is undergoing transition and thus have been going though changes so I'm sure that these circumstances wont be permanent but they did a great job with being understanding and agreeable with making the whole experience great even without the direct delivery being available. Would use their services again and would recommend to anyone on the island looking to visit Mokoli'i island (chinaman hat island).Written August 7, 2023
- Robin A0 contributionsFun kayak to MokoliʻiLoved renting a kayak from Active Oahu Tours and kayaking to Mokoliʻi and back. Nima was very friendly and helpful. He gave us good advice based on the weather and water conditions. We had a wonderful time, took in some AMAZING views and would absolutely rent from Active Oahu again.Written August 6, 2023
- BetapataS0 contributionsI was hoping to visit more beautiful places, not shopsI had expected a round trip with many stops at beautiful places. But the reality is that we spent most of our time just sitting on the bus, 2 stops at viewpoints of 10 minutes each and 1 of an hour at the beach with the turtles. The rest of the stops were either for food or at tourist gift stores. I would certainly prefer to set foot on a nice beach instead. We were back in Waikiki by 3pm (an hour ahead of programmed time), and lunch was at 10 am! I would not recommend it. The tour leader was very nice and funny, although for my taste he kept telling anecdotes every minute of the trip, which made it difficult to concentrate on the landscape.Written August 2, 2023
- mlmoose170 contributionsFamily kayaking adventureWe had 3 adults, 2 teenagers and 4 kids on this adventure. Each kayak had at least 1 stronger person and we all made it to the island with no problem. Half of us even climbed to the top of Chinaman's hat. Note; This is NOT an easy scramble to the top. Be careful and know going in that it's basically like rock climbing without a rope. Closed toe water sandals or tennis shoes only. No crocs!! However, the experience was worth it. Also, note that the person dropping off the kayaks gave us no advice and didn't even help us drag the kayaks to the water. They were unloaded near the road and we had to drag them out ourselves. And, there is a nice beach area to the left of where you land that I wish we had known about. Some other travelers told us about it. I wish the company had given us this hint. Eating here and relaxing would have been better than where we landed the kayaks (rocky and up against a hill).Written July 31, 2023

I was interested in it after it was introduced on Japanese TV. The content was just fascinating and it was a lot of fun to kayak through the jungle. The view from the jungle to the sea is also wonderful, and it is a good experience to enjoy both the river and the sea. I am grateful to the staff for the simple and easy-to-understand instructions on how to set up the kayak and how to put it on the car.

Everything arrived on time and was great regarding that part... but...
I paid for two, got a double seater kayak. Ok. That part is admissible. The secluded river, yeah, that is overgrown and there really isn't a river to go up. You end up going through a canal that lines a bunch of people's back yards before hitting a little bit of ocean, then you have to porter over a beach or steer back to said canal to go back to launch. All in all, nice people, but definitely not worth the price. Regretting having purchased this tour.

Thanks for your review. I’m sorry the trip wasn’t up to your expectations. Kahana Valley is a unique location where even though it is a State Park free from hotel and commercial shops, there are local Hawaiian families that live there and have lived in that valley for generations. There is a lot of history in that area. I wish the state would allow us to have a guide show you around.
Personally, Kahana Valley is one of my favorite paddling locations. It sounds like you did not paddle up into the valley on the right towards the locally placed rope swings and more secluded part of the river with more jungle, no houses or backyards and more Mountain Views. Not taking that route would indeed shorten the experience dramatically.
It is true that as you paddle towards the highway that there are houses along the river, but that area quickly opens up to some fantastic scenic views of the mountains. As you head out to the bay, on your right is an ancient Hawaiian fish pond built with professionally stacked rocks. My favorite part is paddling out into the middle of kahana bay and getting some nice panorama shots of the bay and the super green mountains.
It’s true that the Kahana “river” would more properly be described as an estuary fed by fresh water streams, but it’s the largest natural navigable waterway on windward Oahu and you can kayak there year-round.
I can see why you feel the way you did. Since it sounds like price was an issue for you, if you are back on island again, feel free to give us a call and we can get you a nice discount to try paddling out to Mokolii or one of our other routes.
