100% Worth It
Aug 2021 • Family
Our guide Kawika was the best…. It was 6 of us and we all have different strength levels. Without Kawika I don’t think we’d all make it to the top of Koko Head. Kawika made sure we all safely made it to the top and back down. He made sure to always stay with the last person in our group to make sure we were good. An added bonus he bought us water and healthy snacks to keep us moving. Plus he took some awesome pictures of us along that way. Although you could do this trail alone for free we seen even the fittest people struggle going up and coming back down. I would highly recommend Kawika if activity if it’s your 1st time.

If you’re thinking to yourself I didn’t come to Hawaii to hike, think again…. The views were definitely worth the hike.

Challenging 2-hour hike straight up the mountain, 1,050 steps up an old railroad track with Breath-taking views…
Feb 2020
5 Things You Must Know
1. The hike is up old railroad tracks and though it is like climbing stairs, they are not stair steps
2. The steps can be as much as 2½ to 3 feet apart so you have to stretch to go up or down
3. You must wear athletic shoes that grip dirt/sand; NO slippers, loafers, or sandals.
4. Hydrate in advance of your climb and bring water, even if a small bottle from 7-Eleven
5. Wear sunscreen – you will be in direct sunlight the entire time you are on your hike
I’ve gone on hundreds of hikes worldwide and though each is challenging physically (i.e. it gets your heart rate up to 170+ for a sustained period, up to an hour or more), what makes the Koko Crater trail hike unique is that you are going up old railroad tracks; NOT stairs, though they have added steps where there are large gaps in the tracks. (2) The average vertical rise in stair steps is 7 inches, the rise in these “steps” can be 20” to 30.” Or put another way, it is not going up 1,050 steps which are of equally distanced rise, but it can be a step-up of 2-3’ in certain sections. (3) Going down is more difficult than going up, and certainly more dangerous (i.e. slipping and falling, not down the mountain but on your bottom). You have to be mentally prepared that even though gravity is your friend when going down, you have to be mentally alert and take each step down very carefully. (3) NO place for water or food, NO water fountain even in the parking lot before the hike; bring fruit, protein bar, etc.

Amazing hike!!
You do not need to pay anyone to do this hike. Take the city bus number 22, it’s cheap and will take you pretty much right to the trail head. This was an AMAZING hike. So worth it for the beautiful view at the top. Bring water and take your time. It’s more daunting coming back down so just be careful. If you’re in decent shape you’ll be fine. Don’t miss out, you’ll feel a huge sense of accomplishment! Loved loved this hike!

Not a walk in the park but well worth it
Aug 2019
Got a taxi from Waikiki, $35 and 30 min trip, arrived about 8.30am, would recommend arriving earlier as it is hot even at 8.30 in the morning. Trail opens at 6am I think, a better time to start anyway. We are in our 50's, almost 60, and not fit but doing pretty good for our age. That said, this is not an easy trail and if we went again I would do some training beforehand. The railway sleepers are not like stairs, they are all over the shop, high, low, far apart, missing, rotting and very steep, especially at the top. We made it to the top in just under an hour, taking it easy with many short breaks. There were many people on the trail at this hour, all ages and fitness levels and all seemed to be doing it bit by bit with lots of rests, totally the way to go. The view from the top is amazing and so worth the effort. In some ways the decent is almost worse than the climb, fighting to keep balance with the steep decent, but much quicker going down.

My advice....

Do some fitness training beforehand
Go early to avoid the heat
Drink plenty of water
Take it at an easy pace with lots of rests - enjoy the view on the way up
Be mindful of others on the trail that are fitter or less fit than yourself
Just do it, you wont regret the view from the top, so worth it

Go by yourself, it's free.
I don't understand why people are paying money to do this. This hike is completely free! I would suggest going by yourself I'm taking your time. Bring water and snacks and relax at the top how long will it taking plenty of breaks on the way up. This hike is awesome! Just don't pay for it!

Just Do It
If you visit Oahu, head out and hike up KoKo Head trail on a clear, sunny day. It’s NOT easy, but the view from the top is awesome.

Amazing but scary
This hike is not easy. If you go be nice to the people around you. Move to the side to let people pass. The beginning is not too steep it get steeper after the bridge. Yes you will encounter a slight bridge I could only look down at my footing and that was the worst part for me as I could see how I could fall if I slip or miss the wood plant but you can take the alternate path along the side. Look for it I was told about it after I crossed the bridge. I think that was one of the challenges for me to cross a bridge with a slight drop. See my photos. The views are incredible, bring water and rest whenever you need to. There are really 1049 steps, it is like lunges and don’t worry everyone else new at this is huffing and puffing. They say people can do this in 5 minutes on you tube videos. 20 minutes for the average person. Not sure what is average but we did it in 55 minutes. We do cardio about 4-5 times a week for a hour. With some weight training 1 times a week. Maybe we'll get better if we did it more often. Wearing good shoes with traction is best. When you get up there make sure you go all the way up to top.

I am an older person- 60 plus- and I found the Koko Head Trail doable but would probably not hike it again. It is a workout-not a leisurely trek through a rainforest. You go there for a purpose and to successfully complete the challenge. Personally felt great! The view was good however there are several other hikes where the views are comparable.
