- DeeZee40 contributionsFun experience! What a fun and awesome staff! After a busy week of snorkeling, body boarding and such, we were feeling our 50s by the time we made our way to the Kaimana for surf lessons with Kai Sallas' Pro Surf School. We met Turner when renting a paddleboard, and immediately warmed up to him as he described the water and waves around the Kaimana. We were still a bit nervous about our ability to surf, but turned up for our lessons and couldn't help but be buoyed by Turner's enthusiasm and encouragement. He's a treasure to the school and hotel, and I just wish we had been there a few more days to take another lesson!Written October 27, 2023
- Rachel W0 contributionsAWESOME!I went with my 9 year old nephew and my 11 year old niece and it was great! I didn't have the best feeling going into this experience and I was even more nervous when we pulled up to a (seemingly) random spot on the beach and this was the surf school. I had been a bit nervous because of the safety issues but all the staff stressed safety and I actually felt confident we would be safe, after the initial talk. We were a semi private lesson which meant the 3 of us (myself, niece and nephew ) with one instructor. Our instructor's name was Brooks and he immediately impressed us- he stressed safety as well. He made a massive difference in our experience - without him I don't think we would have had such an awesome experience. He was patient and competent and worked really well with my niece and nephew. He was super positive and encouraging and very strong! We all loved him -if you go ask for Brooks he is the best. They provided us with water shoes and a surf board and an experience of a lifetime! Thank you very muchWritten January 2, 2020
- WearyTraveler19790 contributionsAmazing experience! My 5.5 year old daughter and I took a private surf lessons with Kai and Lowen today and had an amazing time. She stood up and caught on immediately. It took momma a little longer but they were super patient and I finally got the hang of it. The beach was very private and the waves were perfect. The kiddo now wants to be a professional surfer!Written October 17, 2019
- jsthilaire3270 contributionsBest thing we did on OahuMy husband and I wanted to try surfing while visiting Oahu and we were so glad we did. It was so much fun, our instructor Jake was fantastic, and we haven't stopped talking about it since. The location was great, as you can stand in the water if you are tired from paddling and take a break before catching the next wave. We would book again with the school in a heartbeat when we go back to Oahu.Written October 6, 2019
- AnnO3500 contributionsBest way for a beginner to surf!We were too late for a group lesson, so we ended up doing a private lesson for our family of four. Lucky for us, it was with Kai Sallas himself! He was so down to earth that we didn't realize we were with the longboard world champion. And thankfully, he was very patient! You hear so many horror stories about people (who don't know what they're doing) getting hurt or hurting others when trying to surf (actually happened to a friend of our's). And if you're lucky enough not to injure others or get injured yourself, not many people actually are able to catch a wave. That's the hardest part - way more than standing up on the board. Because Kai pushes you with the wave as it comes, all you have to do is stand (the way he tells you to), and you're surfing! Then, you get to come home with brag photos!Written June 13, 2019
- els323s0 contributionsGreat surf schoolThis is a great place to learn to surf. They break surfing down into 4 easy steps and everyone in our class stood up by the end of the session. That provide everything you need, you just need to show up. I highly recommend.Written April 26, 2019
- LisaD710 contributionsHe was Surfing! My 9 year old wanted to learn how to surf. With a quick in office orientation as to how to surf, we drove out to the beach and within 15 minutes, my son was surfing. Low waves in shallow water, but he was up and doing it. The clincher was that they provided Go Pro pictures right from the edge of the surf board (for an extra charge)! The only thing that would have made it better was if Kai had shown up himself. My son was so happy! They provide the water shoes and rash guard too. The water is shallow which would be good for a nervous person, but it there are also reef rocks making it a potentially dangerours location to surf. For a young person it might be hard to navigate the reef rocks and think about surfing.Written February 15, 2019
- MYF760 contributionsLessons good, location poorEnjoyed the lessons. The instructors were great. The location was very poor as we learned to surf in shallow water with a reef floor. The concern over injury impacted the lesson. On the last run of the lesson my daughter hit the reef and got a very nasty cut which impacted the next couple of days of our vacation.Written February 9, 2019
- danhC3683LF0 contributionsGreat surf lessonsOur instructor had us up and surfing in no time. Well organized and a lot of fun. Definitely worth the money, but see if your hotel offers a discount.Written December 30, 2018

- kimberlyvickers060 contributionsSurf But Bring Rash Guards! My daughter and husband have never surfed. I used to because I grew up on the PCH and well, it's just what you do! This surf lesson was recommended via our concierge at The Waikiki Marriott Resort & Spa. My husband booked a private lesson for he and my daughter. We met down in the surf shop later in the afternoon. The lesson took place right there in the shop with Lowen; basic 'how to's' on getting up ; paddling out; leg placement and balance. The boards are blue foam. We were by a kind of rundown van shuttled out to a less busy beach away from Waikiki. Shoes were lended to both and we assumed rash guards would be too. My husband swore that he asked and that was confirmed upon booking. No rash guards were supplied; trust me.. You need these. The instructor was cool and nice enough. Both my daughter and my husband were able to surf within minutes of being out in the ocean. My daughter ended up loving surfing so much, she wants to go do more over the summer. That was a plus! NOT having rash guards was not , as both her and my husband were pretty rashed after an hour of surfing and hitting course sand and reef. The boards could have been a little better in quality, as well, as the lessons aren't cheap! The other issue we had, was being told that having a 'go pro' to video or film the session would render 100% loss of the device. That may be or not be true. We didn't chance it. After the session the instructor offered to air drop us the video and pix of both for $75 a piece if we gave him cash on the spot. I didn't have that much cash on me. He said he would upload them and we could get them from the shop the next morning via credit card. We wanted them! The next day we called and the girl that checked us in for the prior days lesson said we could have called the day before and she wished she had known. There were no uploaded pix. She said she would call us with the pix which we could them get via Dropbox later that day. She never called. It was 4 days after we returned back to the Mainland and several calls before we got these pix. Island time? I don't know. Improvements could be made.. the lesson itself was great .. maybe a better place and the lesson not in the shop. Rash guards are huge and updated equipment to match cost is key too. They could also have some sort of package so the customer knows the photos will be pricey and optional. It seemed tacky to do that after and then take so many calls to get photos that cost NOTHING to video;not that I am saying they should be free, but $150 for two is a lot. We were also entitled to a small discount by booking this surf school via our concierge and we never got it. 3 stars and on the fence whether to return or recommend.Written April 20, 2018
- Amie N0 contributionsAmazing first time surf experienceWe had a lesson for our 10 & 12-year-old kids and couldn't be happier! The whole team - Manu, Jake & Makani - made them feel right at home and allayed any nerves. Once the kids got in the water, Jake & Makani were super patient, extremely encouraging, and seemed as excited as our kids were at the whole experience. The fact that the surf spot is away from the crowds (and there were a ton of people surfing near our hotel in Waikiki!) made it easy for us to watch and enjoy. We'd definitely recommend this shop, and will be repeat customers the next time we visit!Written April 1, 2018
- movingaround4410 contributionsit was terrificMy lesson with Lowen was great and I found it was easier than I had anticipated to get up and stand and actually surf. I highly recommend.Written March 27, 2018
- Saloni W0 contributionsThank you Kai Sallas! The instructor was wonderful, very patient and helpful, the waves were perfect for a beginner, and the environment created was lovely. Would recommend, 10/10!Written March 17, 2018
- Stephanie L0 contributionsThank you LowenMy 9 yo had an amazing time learning to surf. He was so excited to go his first time, he couldn’t sleep the night before. I had booked a semi-private lesson (would have been 3 kids max) as my son wanted to be with other kids his own age he said. Turns out, February break doesn’t have many tourists and he wound up with a private lesson for 2 hours. His instructor was Lowen and I just have to say, what a great guy. Ollie really liked him and had a blast. He taught some basic out of the water stuff first, then they were right into the water after about 10-15 min. The first wave and he was up!! Ollie’s been on a swim team for 3 years, the kid is a fish and he was not going to leave that ocean though he was getting tired paddling out, you could see it, but what do you expect when you have as many waves as he did in such a short amount of time! I’ve got the surf school tagged her on TripAdvisor so the next time we come back to Hawaii, we will be booking again!Written March 5, 2018

My 17 year old daughter described her surf lesson as the best day of her life. The instructors were patient and kind with our large group of girls and by the end of the day all our girls were surfing. They all had a great time and we counted this as a huge success. I cannot recommend Kai Sallas enough they were awesome and the price was unbeatable!! Only thing, if your surfing, bring a rash guard.

Our 12-year-old daughter participated in a semi-private lesson and said it was the best thing we did on vacation in Hawaii. The instructors were positive, encouraging and respectful of the kids, all of whom were riding waves by the end of the lesson. It was very exciting to watch! We couldn't have asked for a better experience and we can't wait to go back. Aloha!

Group lessons were a blast and we learned so much! Very professional and patient, but still laid-back and enjoyable! Had a small lesson on the basics and then went out to a private beach area to surf. They provided rash guards and the boards! Would highly recommend!

Group lesson - 5 people - 3 instructors. Great time. We had private area on beach (a VERY rare thing in Wakik) where instructors were great. Jake made it all enjoyable. Many waves with no danger of hitting anyone- better than Maui experience for that.

Our group of 9, including 5 tweens/teens took a 2 hour morning lesson last week. They were on time to pick us up from the Aulani and all of the staff was friendly. The beach where we were taken was appropriate for beginners but not really scenic (if that is important to you) and there was a sort of homeless camp set up right near us in the bushes.
The beach has many large rocks so waves cannot be ridden in to the shore. Two of my kids ended up with big scrapes on their hips near the end of the lesson as they fell against the rocks. I wasn't close enough to see this happen at the time and the staff did clean up the wounds reasonably until we got back to the resort and had some more in depth first aid attention. I don't blame the surf school for this, it is a hazard of being on a rocky coast and unfortunately I don't think there is another choice around Oahu.
Overall we were happy with the quality of instruction and location based on the size of the waves there.

Very down to earth, professional and fun experience. Excellent instructor. We learned at an easy spot and could get up on the board on our first wave.

We had a group lesson, but it was midweek noon and so it was just our family of four. Pablo did a great job explaining what we needed to do. We all four are snowboarders but only I had ever attempted surfing before. He drove us to a spot with gentle but consistent waves and no one else around. We were catching waves on our own in no time. Unlike other reviewers, they did provide us with rashguards.
Only complaint I have (and its minor) my 13 year old daughter struggled a bit paddling due to width of the 10' board. She's a competitive swimmer, and so she managed, but the board was a little too wide for her.

My brothers and I had a great time. Kai;s Surf was super professional and accommodating. We really liked how they spent the first bit teaching us how to stand up on the board and pointers. They actually make you do it which really helps!
Jake was our instructor and was super friendly and personable and we definitely would recommend this to everyone.

We are getting a response that all dates we've tried in June are sold out! Is it just too early to book for June 14? If so, when can I book?
