10/10 - Awesome experience with Maui Waveriders Lahaina (MWR) this week!! We booked a semi-private lesson for 3 teenagers (and Dad to tag along) Christmas week. TL;DR - Fun, safe, and super productive lesson! We received an email a day or 2 in advance advising where to meet. When we arrived in Maui, there was a swell and the ocean was rough our first few days at the beach. We were a but nervous about the lesson with the high surf, but we were provided a lesson location where the waves were much more manageable. Once we arrived at the location - which was clearly described in the email from MWR - we were greeted by the instructor Kyle. Kyle spent the first 5-10 minutes on the beach going over the safety and surfing etiquette, as well as how our lesson would be structured. The instructor also covered some surfing fundamentals including the proper stance, how to prepare for and catch a wave, and how to safely dismount the board once you've ridden the wave. We spent the remainder to the time in the water with the instructor providing easy to understand feedback, building upon what each of us had successfully applied. The instructor also provided a GoPro to each of us to capture a few of our rides. By the end of the lesson, everyone was able to confidently ride a wave and had an understanding and appreciation for surfing etiquette. Plus, we received our videos later that day! During my trip, I had an accident with a wave breaking on me; the incident caused multiple fractures in my neck. I was admitted. Of course, my partner and I could not advance with surf lessons. The company was so kind and made an accommodation without hassle. I am so grateful for this kindness and look forward to supporting their establishment in the future!

Wow, what a great experience we had. Kyle with his positive attitude immediately put my 12-year-old daughter in confidence. He explained the safety measures and we spent most of our time in the water surfing waves. We had a real pleasure to surf in this paradise and were even accompanied by turtles. We are also French speakers with a basic English. This was not an obstacle for Kyle.

Best lesson! Kyle was very welcoming and even had us meet him a bit earlier so we could have optimal surf conditions. Kahala was an amazing instructor and my kids/adults (22,21,19 and 15) had the best time with her. They talked about the lesson all day. And the price was very affordable. Couldn’t recommend Maui Waveriders enough!

My husband and I booked a semi private surfing lesson with Maui Wave Riders Lahina. It was one of the highlights of the trip. Our instructor, Kahala, was truly wonderful! She has the heart of a teacher and great patience. Under her guidance I was able to get up on the board 3 of my 4 attempts. I’m 63 and not at all athletic. Highly recommend MWR Lahina

My husband and I took a lesson with Kyle today and it was beyond great. He made us instantly feel comfortable and safe and knew exactly how to build our confidence and give us a taste of surfing for us two novices. Thanks for a fun time and memory!

Great experience for the three of us. I surfed 30 years ago, so this was a refresher (much needed). The other two including my 6 year old daughter were new to surfing. We all got up every single try. Kohala was our instructor and she is the best on the beach. As some have said, the lesson area is crowded, but in our 2 hours, the three of us each got 10+ waves. Remember, a huge part of surfing is being one with the ocean and waiting for those waves. We will go back every time we are on Maui. Unfortunately, we had our lessons the day before the Hurricane Dora Wildfires hit on August 8 2023. From the pictures on August 9th, their building burned down and nothing is left. Some of the instructors lived right behind the shop. It looks like the trainer down the street with all their boards burned also. We are devastated, but when they rebuild, we will be back. We hope all of them are safe. Sending our Aloha to the MWR ohana!

My wife and I had been to surf lessons before and this was a much different experience than we had ever seen. We arrived, we’re fit with a long sleeve shirt and reef booties. We walked to a trailer and grabbed surfboards to take to the beach. Our instructor gave a five minute on shore tutorial of how to lay on the board and swim, the slow motion of knees to hands, stand up wide, etc. He spoke softly and quickly. He informed us that we would be sharing with ten other surf schools in a 100 metre width area and that we must remain by a buoy until it was our turn. A “turn” involved swimming out to the instructor on the board, facing the shore and waiting for him to throw you and your board once he got a wave you could “surf”. This was different from other lessons where you are tasked with finding waves, positioning the board towards the shore, paddling to get speed, and then trying to get up on the board. The lesson lasted just over an hour. It was scheduled 12:30-2:30 and we had tidied up, walked back to the trailer and changed into our clothes by 2:15. They had asked us if we wanted photos for $30 per person. We declined. The person in the shop was great and helpful but our experience surfing was very poor. I would not suggest this to anyone wanting to do an actual surf lesson. If you have young kids, this might be for them but the crowded surf area made it worrisome.

All three kids were successful at surfing and this was their first time. They are all pretty atheletuc but first attempt were up after beach instructions

I decided to book s lesson in my last day in Maui. My lesson was with Wait, he was incredibly encouraging and patient. He explained what I was doing wrong and encouraged me to keep going.

Both my boys were first timers (20 & 15) and were able to get up and going after some great instructions and patience. I do recommend the photos to capture the excitement (unless you have a super zoom). Highly recommend MWR!

Amazing experience for my 7-year-old daughter and husband both surfing for the first time with MWR! Loved the whole team and lesson -- especially, Star, who was super patient, encouraging and they both had a great time. Highly recommend!

Our instructor Kabela was awesome. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. She was patient and made sure my daughter was able to get up and ride a wave!

we had an amazing experience at Maui waveriders. Everyone was kind and helpful. Our surf instructor Renton was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful in aiding us to learn a new sport. we had fun learned the basics and I had no trouble as a first time surfer and first time out in the ocean catching multiple waves. this was a surprise as I am a beginner swimmer and Renton made sure that we all felt comfortable and knew what to do when we were in the water. We felt cared for he definitely cared about us, the sport, and his home.
