We did the horseback ride in early November. I have only been on a horse once before so I was the nervous rider in our group, but there were other newbies as well as intermediate and expert riders. Fred was amazing and made me feel comfortable during the entire 2+ hour ride up the mountain for some amazing views and then down to ocean level for other amazing views. Would highly recommend this for a fun activity that most were not envision on Maui. Thank you for a great morning an interesting conversation, Fred!

We split up our review by each person so you can get different perspectives on this tour:
Dad: You get a great value for your time and money. We generally go horseback riding on our trips (Montana, Idaho, Zion, Malibu, Kauai, Maui) and this was by far the best we've ever been on. The tour guides were amazing, knowledgeable, and friendly. They assessed our kids' skill level and gave them the appropriate tempered horse. What I loved is that they allowed them to trot a little faster than others since they looked comfortable on the horse. The trail was amazing, with amazing views. You will most likely get very very dusty. It took us 3-4 scrubs to get all the red dust out, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Mom: I liked that they took the time to personalize the experience based on each individual's experience level.
7-yo daughter: It was really fun. I loved getting to see the ocean and really liked riding the horse on the mountain. My horse was really kind. The funny thing was he would stop, go a little, stop, go a little, He was funny. My horse was fast and that's what I liked about him. Whenever he ran it was so fun.
9-yo daughter: It was really fun, especially when the horses run. Normally when we go horseback riding they don't let the horses run, but here they let them run and it made it fun. I liked that it was really long too, you get to enjoy it when it's a longer ride. And the path we went through was really beautiful.

So this is a great activity, but you might want a rental car with some serious ground clearance (like a jeep maybe?) to get up the "road" to the site parking area. There is a small space by the main road where they meet you with an ATV and you follow them (drive) back to a gated entrance road. A bit confusing, but look for the area with their sign and just pull off the road, wait and remember the concept of island time.
AFTER all that, the experience is great. People running this place are hard core animal lovers. At the main trailhead facility they have goats, sheep, a pot-bellied pig, a dog, a cat, chickens, peacocks. Its a real menagerie, but its like a mini petting zoo while you wait to be paired with a horse than matches your size and riding experience. And I'll say, that my horse was by FAR the best animal I have ever ridden on such a tour. Smart, mostly obedient, and very sure-footed.
The team made sure there were great pictures taken of everyone, and yes, there was an amazing waterfall view looking from the NorthEast back towards Iao Valley. This was ALOT of fun, and both my teenage kids loved it. Yes, there is red clay everywhere, so washable tennis shoes would be the right idea. Plan to drive back to the hotel barefoot, and bring a bag for your shoes.
By the way, the dude in the red shirt on the pale horse...true Paniolo and quiet the character. Definitely adds to the whole experience. Highly recommend!

The best adventure I’ve had to date here in Maui. They exceeded all my expectations. Everyone was professional, gave great instructions, I felt safe and challenged all at the same time. Worth every penny, and I would’ve paid more for this experience.

The guides and horses were amazing!! I would definitely book with them again. The horses were very well cared for and they put a lot of thought into the matching the horse to the riders level of experience. As an advanced trail rider this was a truly fun and unique ride. Also would like to commend them on having saddles that fit the horses because not tour companies do.

My family of 5 had a great experience on the horseback tour. We ranged from never been on a horse to had lessons and everything in-between. We had a great range in ages as well. We were in a group of 10; everyone was fitted with helmets and horses. We were given a quick lesson on guiding our horses, though we were never without our two guides. Up to the mountains and down near the beach. The ride was over 2 hours and it was a tremendous experience. We learned much along the way. The guides took photos of whoever wanted to have them. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to see some beautiful scenery while engaging in a fun activity. There are also ATV rides at the site, and lots of farm animals.

Got a call about an hour before the meet up time from the tour group the morning of the activity canceling our reservation due to sick horses or staffing issues??? Not really sure, they were super vague. They could not accommodate us for a different day for the horse tour but offered us the ATV tour. We were not interested in the ATV's. We chose to get a full refund over the phone at that point. The next day, I was sent an email from Trip Advisor asking me to review the trip. That confused me since I was under the impression Maui Mountain Activities had cancelled the reservation and refunded me my money. I then called the Maui Activities number provided and left a message which was then returned via text message telling me I needed to cancel the reservation through Trip Advisor (even though Trip Advisor clearly states the company should cancel it if it's due to issues on their end). Several phone calls later, I finally was able to get a real person on the phone who then still had to call Maui Mountain Activities to confirm the cancellation and authorize the refund. I suspect the business hopes the traveler may forget to look into the refund, but not sure on that. Either way, super disappointed the horse trail didn't happen, left us with not much to do that day since it was so last minute for the cancellation call. And the business was not easy to deal with.

We apologize for your experience. We had a trail guide injured at her second job. We were contacted at 7am that she will not in to work. Tried to get another guide in her place but was unsuccessful. Our insurance requires a guide for every so many riders and we had to option but to cancel the most recently booked reservation which was yours. I’m not sure why there was any confusion. We tried to offer atvs at no additional cos but was unable
To reschedule you since the horseback ride is completely sold out for months ahead of time. We contacted Viator immediately to cancel and refund the reservation but they are a third party company and it takes them a little while for all their departments to get notification of the cancellation. It usually takes 3-5 business days for your refund to apply and was done immediately

This was perfect for people with little to no riding experience. If you have riding experience, it might be a bit slow. The horses are gentle and matched well to the rider and the guides are great - we had Indie and Joe. The views are spectacular! My daughter, who is an advanced rider, had fun and loved being able to canter for a bit at the end.

We recently visited Maui for the first time and decided to try a horseback ride. This wasn't our first ride, but we still consider ourselves to be beginners. The ranch hands took great care in matching us to the proper horse for our experience level and fitting us appropriately. The ride was a long one and involved a trip up the mountain (to see the waterfall from a distance) and back down the mountain to the beach level views.
You are provided with a small saddle bag and access to drinking water. The cowboy and cowgirl accompany you all of the way, and they are constantly checking on you and monitoring your horse. The mountain path is wide and well-cleared.
Things to consider: Parking and the drive up to the ranch is rough. You definitely need a rugged car or a jeep and not a sports car. There are two port-o-potties, so make sure you use the facilities before riding up the mountain. At a minimum, make sure you wear jeans and sunscreen along with a hat.
What I wish I had known: Dust, there is a lot of dust that you will ride through on a dry day. The horses in front of you will kick up the dust. If you are sensitive to allergies or prone to sinus infections, this could pose a problem as it did for me a few days after our ride.

They cancelled on us within 12 hours of our ride and no interest in rescheduling due to staffing issues. Only offered an ATV ride which is not the same as horseback rides through waterfalls. So beware of this possibility. We were the most excited for this experience and only checked our phone in the morning to find out the disappointing news.

I am very sorry about having to cancel your ride. Unfortunately our trail guide was unexpectedly injured at her other job. As soon as we were notified we informed you. We processed your full refund immediately. Unfortunately there are just some things that are out of our control. Again, I am very sorry about this.

I do not know? There were younger ones there but I believe it is same price for all. They do same thing for all of us whether young or old. Would not be suitable for young children..I would say under 7 or 8.

8 Am. They wait for whole group til 8:15. Horseback riders and Atv riders meet there. Website said they have afternoon session that is less money and less time to ride. I asked when we were done if they had afternoon session he said no.

Jayden, If you search on the activity address there is a Maui Seaside hotel and a Banana Bungalow Maui hostel but I would check with the tour operators.
You need a car to get to the horseback venue. Be aware it is a steep, rutted, gravel road so don’t bring a rental sports car.
