About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- michiganpete70 contributionsLoved the snorkeling! Skip the hot dogs!We chose the afternoon snorkeling tour. Due to high wind conditions, we couldn't go to the Molokini Crater as originally scheduled. Instead, the captain drove to a calmer location along the North Shore an extra 15 minutes away. While I'm sure the snorkeling we experience wasn't as great as it would have been at the Molokini Crater, it was still fun enough. We got just over an hour of actual snorkeling time, with the rest transit to and from the site. We saw a few tropical fish, a baby octopus and one sea turtle. The crew was friendly and very informative on safety procedures, equipment use, etc. All snorkeling gear is provided (masks and fins). Pool noodles are also made available for those who want help simply floating on the top. You can bring your own snorkeling gear if you wish; we saw several do so. After snorkeling is over all passengers are offered 2 hot dogs, chips and pop during the ride back to dock at no charge. Condiments went too quickly, many were left without. Cocktails were available for purchase too. Last, as passengers were getting off the boat, the crew handed out chocolate chip cookies. My advice? Skip the hot dogs!! While a nice gesture, you will pay for it later. Our party of five all had the 'hot dog burps' the rest of the evening. Wait until departure and hit a local restaurant for a better meal.Written June 18, 2023
- Mstraaveler0 contributionsExpected to be more impressedThe crew of the Mahlolo were great and very helpful. JJ was really outstanding, in contrast to Cpt. Carolos whom was not. I asked him for another fin that might be a bit wider and he says there's only one size.. Which I understood, however one was all stretched out & one was newer, that hurt my foot. JJ was quick to respond and searched for another fin. If he hadn't I wouldn't have been able to swim. The boat seemed a bit over crowded to me. I had to sit in the sun and my daughter had stand with her infant son because of no seats. Coral garden wasn't nearly as colorful as the preview pictures showed, but it was a nice reef. We did have a good trip, I just expected me coral and fish.Written June 12, 2023

The crew were efficient, safe, friendly, generous, and super helpful to the first-timers. Snorkeling gear and several types of flotation devices were included, and wetsuits were available for rent. - 843christelw0 contributionsGreat trip! The crew did a wonderful job trying to get us near whales. They did explain the whales are headed back north so there are fewer in the water at this time. Even still we were able to catch a glimpse of a mama and baby whale. The crew was very kind, super helpful. I would definitely recommend this crew!Written April 9, 2023

- ypayton800 contributionsHighly recommend! Was an awesome whale watching cruise! It was really interesting hearing all the information about the whales. We got to hear the whales sing live with an underwater microphone, which was really cool! We were even lucky enough to see a mama whale breach a couple of times, followed by the baby breaching several times. The crew was really informative, had great customer service and seemed to genuinely love their jobs. Our teens enjoyed it. The price was great. Overall a wonderful experience that I would recommend to others!Written March 28, 2023

- 944grantn0 contributionsBait and SwitchWe booked a trip on the Malolo but actually rode with the Calypso. Not sure why we got switched. We overheard others in line talking about the same thing. The Malolo is supposed to be a smaller, more intimate boat. The Calypso was more like a cheap cruise ship. My guess is they didn't book enough so they crammed us all on the single big boat. Also, the instructions told us to arrive at 6am but when we arrived, there was no one from the company at the meeting spot. A few others were there at 6am but we just stood around in the dark for about an hour. Found out that most received a message the night before to arrive one hour later but we never received that message. When we finally boarded the ship it was almost 2 hours after we arrived. Not a great way to start the trip with two small kids. I would not recommend this tour group. Unprofessional and bad communication.Written February 24, 2023
- 681ginettew0 contributionsTour cancelled because malolo dry-dockedWe were booked to do an afternoon snorkel on the malolo today at 1 pm. We arrived 30 minutes as requested along with a number of other people. An hour later we were told the trip was cancelled and that in fact the malolo was actually dry-docked. Apparently management had screwed up. So now with only one day left before we leave Maui, we are unable to take a snorkeling trip. Very frustrating. I really don’t understand how a company can advertise for an afternoon snorkel tour when the boat you’re supposed to do it on is dry-docked?!Written August 7, 2022

We booked this tour with the expectation of going to Molikini and Turtle Town, and having seen the wind weather advisories contacted the tour operator the day prior to departure. We were assured we would be contacted for any cancelations after making it clear we wanted to go to Molikini particularly.
The morning of, with strong wind gusts and a small vessel advisory they still claimed that Molikini was the goal but that they would see how the water looked. Eventually, about 10 minutes into the trip they admitted they would not be able to for safety reasons and took us to two alternative snorkel sites. While still fun, these were easily accessible from the shore and not worth the trip.
I completely understand the safety perspective and I know Molikini would have been impossible with the wind. All other tour operators were doing the same alternative sites. However, my main complaint was with the lack of communication. I'm pretty sure the crew and captain suspected what the end result would be and yet led us on with hope.
I would have preferred to know the reality ahead of time and skipped the trip if there was such a low chance of success, refund or not. I would have preferred a morning exploring shore sites on my own.
Aside from this, crew and boat were great. Food was also mediocre, but I was not expecting anything from the food. I would still recommend this tour, the price point is fair and the size of the boat is perfect. Just be sure to cancel ahead of tjme if there is any inclination of high winds, the alternative routes are mediocre at best.

When we booked this trip we specifically picked a boat that was smaller and had areas for lounging and moving around. When we arrived the morning of our excursion, however, we were informed that our boat had been combined with two others and that everyone was going on a larger boat. We were told this was a "free" upgrade. The boat we ended up on is used for dinner cruises and so we had to sit at a little table the whole trip. This was very disappointing as we specifically picked a boat with areas to lounge and less people. If they had called to tell us about the change we would have cancelled.
That said, we still had a good time being out on the water and the staff was hardworking, helpful and friendly. The food at lunch was amazing and the bar staff worked hard to get to everyone quickly. We saw whales on the ride out. Be careful as it is VERY windy.
The snorkelling at the crater was mediocre at best. We saw more things with less people around by going off of Kamaole beach. Turtle town was a HUGE disappointment as 150 people swam around trying (unsuccessfully) to find a turtle. Again, we saw more turtles with less people around at Kamaole beach.
Ultimately, we made the most of the trip and enjoyed the ride, but would have preferred the boat we booked with and had more success snorkelling off the beaches.
Again, wonderful staff.

On the positive side we had a great time on the trip. The boat ride on the Calypso was comfortable with good views from the top deck. They served plenty of tasty food, and the alcoholic drinks available for an additional fee were very cheap. The crew were very friendly and the captain kept us well informed during the journey, including during a number of whale sightings. The snorkeling at Molokini was great. Very good visibility with well over an hour to swim around and explore the reef. They have lifeguards that sit out on surfboards to make sure everyone is ok. The second stop off the shore near Wailea was fun, but visibility was not as good. We were lucky enough to see one turtle although I had expected to see more. The operation on the boat was very well organized, but on a slightly less positive note we had a hard time finding them. They had switched us to a different boat (Calypso instead of the Malalo) and we did not get the message before we arrived. So we went to the wrong location and lined up before they told us we needed to walk across the harbor to a different boat. We had left with enough time to be there 30 mins early as instructed, but ended up boarding only 5 mins before the ship departed, and there were barely any seats left open. I'd recommend paying close attention to your email before the trip, in case you miss any notifications about changes.

We had an amazing experience. The water was crystal clear for snorkeling and we saw all kinds of gorgeous coral and fish. Captain Greg was very entertaining and kept us well informed as to weather and snorkeling conditions. He and the staff were extremely helpful, especially for someone who was snorkeling for the first time. Lots of good advice and words of encouragement. Tasty breakfast and lunch - you’ll build up an appetite!! A word of caution - be on TIME to check in. The tour leaves promptly at 6:30 am and if you’re late, you’ll miss the tour. I’ll definitely take this tour again when in Maui.

I would have rated it as a 5, but I gave it a 4 because I was confused about the arrival check in time. I thought the check in time was 6:30am, but that was the boat departure time. We almost missed the boat, but the crew waited for us. Please say on the confirmation page that the check in time is 6am and the boat departure time is 6:30am sharp! Since we arrived late, the crew was accommodating and made sure we got our gear and signed the waiver. They also found us seats for our family to sit together since the boat was filled to capacity. I felt bad that I
misunderstood the check in time and I delayed the departure. There was another family that arrived at the same time we did so they may have been confused about the check in time as well. I've snorkled in other places, but Molokini is the best since it had the most fish with different varieties. Loved the sea turtles as well!

Great catamaran ride before dawn from Ma'alaea Harbor to Molokini, with the sun rising over Haupa‘Akea. The water was a bit choppy and a few people got sick, so if you easily get sea sick, take this into consideration. You will also get a little, or a lot, wet if you're in the bow, which is open. The way back was much smoother. We saw dozens of humpback whales and heard great narration about the wildlife and the celebrity inhabitants in and around Makena. The snorkeling wasn't as good as some spots off of beaches we had found, but we did see a couple white tipped reef sharks. Maybe too many snorkelers in the water from several boats? It can get crowded there. While the crew was very responsive, we were a little annoyed at how hard they tried to upsell equipment, like wet suits, which were unnecessary, even in February. (The water will never feel like warm bathwater.) There was also a photographer onboard, who seemed very competent and hard working, but prepare for that upsell as well. The food was ok but a little underwhelming, with no variety, and no accommodation whatsoever for any allergies. As for beverages, we had to try pretty hard to get the crew's attention to get soda. The coffee seemed to disappear by the time we got underway. Also, they served lunch right after the Molokini stop and immediately got underway for Turtle bay, which meant we had to eat while dealing with a pitching boat and a lot of wind. It would have been nice to have a bit of time to eat before leaving. In sum, nice boat ride but not really worth the price if you're just looking for great snorkeling. There are many better and more easily accessed locations right of beaches and bays on Maui and other islands.

Disappointed with the different types of fish that we saw during our trip. Have done tours in different places and this is the one where I have seen the least amount of fish. The crew was good, but I would say they did what they had to do as part of their job. There was nothing amazing about it. For the almost $400 that I paid for 1 adult and 2 kids, I would recommend to save your money and head to black sand beach for much better snorkeling.

We appreciate your feedback. Most of our reviews note the impressive marine life during our snorkel tours. Ocean conditions can impact the visibility level, which is unpredictable. We hope you'll try again soon and see what we mean!

We had the most amazing experience on the Malolo! We had a blast at Molokini snorkeling, proceeded to Turtle Town where we saw multiple turtles and then started back toward the marina. On our way back, we saw SO MANY whales! Our Captain stopped and we got to watch the whales interacting with each other and showing off. It was spectacular. The boat is well kept and the crew was all very friendly and helpful. One of the crew even brought special fruit grown at his home that he used to make us cocktails. I cannot recommend this activity enough!

Unbelievable!
I received an email saying that my booking was canceled. There was no further explanation of why.
I called them up, and they simply just said that because the state has required them to cut the capacity down to 50%. I booked two months in advance and they just decided to cancel my booking. I understand that they have to obey the rule, but at least they could email me and offer me other dates that they could accommodate the tour.
Based on this experience, I would NEVER EVER book any tour with them!

Was a great trip. The weather was windy at the port but that is expected due to its location. The Calypso catamaran had 3 decks, 2 bathrooms, and 2 side slides into the ocean. The crew was extremely friendly, helpful, and encouraging. Had some fun conversations with Tony and Danny. Harper was the lifeguard in the water when we exited the catamaran for snorkeling. They had tons of wetsuits ($10 rental) and flotation devices for all (free). They provided continental breakfast and sandwich lunch. They also had a photographer to take your in the water photos of you and yours with the amazing sea creatures around ($65 package). They provide reef safe sunblock for you to use to protect the reefs and sea life. The day we went, Molokini crater water was very choppy. Turtle town was much calmer. Great experience!

Is there a weight limit? Can you just ride on the boat with family and not participate in the snorkeling?
Written June 10, 2022
There is not a weight limit and you don't have to snorkel, but there are probably better & cheaper trips if you just want to ride in the boat. The snorkeling is why you go on a boat like this. There is an Atlantis sub that goes below the surface without you having to swim or snorkel.
Written June 10, 2022
I’ve got an autoimmune condition that precludes significant time in direct sunlight. Is sitting undercover on the boat coming and going from the destinations possible?
Written March 23, 2022
Yes. They have a covered area. I don’t know that I would say it is “enclosed”, but it is covered & you can be out of the sun.
Written April 1, 2022
No, you should be able to at least float since water life jackets as well as float waist belts are provided for those that need them.
