Norwegian cruise people - Don’t book the Maui guided bike ride with Mountain Riders
I purchased the guided bike ride from Norwegian Cruise Lines (as part of a 7 day Hawaii island cruise) and Mountain Riders provided the guided bike ride. The terms and conditions provided at time of purchase ( by NCL) did not say anything about a minimum speed that you had to ride the bike on the downhill run. According to Mountain Riders, if you ride slower than 20 mph (32.2km/hr) you are not allowed to ride the bike and must return to the van. This is what happened to me. I am a competent bike rider, but prefer not to go fast (for my own safety plus I wanted to enjoy the views from the crater). Such a disappointing experience. Don’t book the Maui bike ride with Mountain Riders!!!

      Fun ride down the volcano
This tour was arranged through our cruise ship, The NCL Pride Of America We were collected from our ship and taken to a meeting point at the bottom of the volcano. After completing the paperwork, we were taken to a point 6500 feet up the Haleakala volcano. We were fitted to a suitable bike and helmet. We were asked if we wanted to ride guided or self guided and I must say I was a little confused at this point about what was happening. I was fearful of getting lost on the way down, do I chose to ride in the guided group, which meant I could only go as fast as the slowest rider. As it turned out, we were to ride 3.5 miles down a single road, until we met one of the guides. We would then put the bikes in the back of the trailer and go back up again for a second run. Understanding now how it works, I rode the second time unguided, which was much more fun! The only gear on the bike was very low, so you can’t really pedal and increase the speed, which is understandable for safety reasons. We then rode back to the starting point at the bottom of the volcano to be transported back to the ship. The team of guides were very good in ensuring everyone was comfortable with this potentially dangerous activity, which was appreciated. A fun thing to do in Maui, but clearer information about what was happening would have been good.

      Great Bike Experience
This tour was spectacular. We pre-booked this excursion as part of our cruise package. Bob was our tour leader, and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. The tour exceeded my expectations and truly capped off a memorable stay in Maui!

      Just do it! Amazing experience!
We had an absolutely fabulous ride with Joe and our van driver Spencer. Nothing but love! Safety is their main concern, the bikes are purpose built for downhill riding, lots of helmet sizes, they provide a cute little bottle of water and granola bars, and my wife said this was her favorite excursion of all of them we've ever done! Joe is the down to earth "beach bum" bike rider, been leading tours for decades, had a great sense of humor, and this was much more fun than the go-by-myself self tour. If you're ever unconformable or just tired, you get to ride down in the van. Didn't have that option riding by myself. Highly recommended!

      Amazing experience!!
Joe and Spencer were amazing. Joe was extremely patient with the novice riders and gave freedom to those who were confident. Spencer provided interesting fact about Maui, the Hawaiian culture, and history. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for adventure and doing things out of the norm!!!

Awesome Self Paced Bike Ride Down The Island Of Maui
My family and I were on a cruise around Hawaii and this was a last minute thing that Bobby allowed me to come with after having a full van already and WITHOUT A DOUBT the best tour I have ever been on. From the views, tour guides, and food this is the one thing that you need to do if you are on the island for less then a day. Manny and Bobby, our two tour guides, were the best tour guides anyone could as for. Knowledge about the island. Welcoming and loving people. Just joyous people showing tourist around their island. Lastly, when it comes to the tour itself, if you have ridden a bike before and know what you're doing the tour guides will let you take the hills at your own paces! Easily reaching 30-35 miles an hour on some of these roads it was a blast! Please if you do anything on the island do this tour!

      Friday, December 1st morning tour.
My wife and I joined another 6 people as part of our Holland America Cruise shore excursion. Bobby picked us up from the cruise port terminal and brought us all to the shop to do paperwork, visit for a bit, and meet Joe. Joe and Bobby would be with us for our downhill ride. Bobby led the way on our rides. Joe drove the van and trailer at the back of our group. Joe communicating with Bobby if there were any vehicles approaching from the rear. Both Bobby and Joe were great! We had a very nice time with them during this tour. We then all drove in the van to the 6500 area and started our downhill ride from there. We had been fitted on our bikes, had our helmets, and given operating and safety instruction. Of course the ride down was fun. The weather was good for our first run, then on the 2nd run the clouds moved in. The weather was a bit of a bummer. And really the buzz kill of the entire ride was the fact that the town of Kula has prohibited bicycle tours from riding through their town. We knew about this in advance, so it wasn’t a shocker to us, just a buzz kill. Again, the ride down from 6500 was a blast. But near the town limits we needed to stop. We were then given a ride back up to 6500 to ride it again. And yes, it was just as fun. After a bypass of Kula, we took a lunch break in a small town, drove a bit more towards the tour office, then were allowed to ride the rest of the way back to the office. After finishing up at the office we were driven back to the cruise ship by Bobby. We had a fun time.

Best experience in Maui and this is the company to go with!
Greatest experience in Maui so far. I'm so glad we went with Mountain Riders vs the bigger company. We ended up riding with just 4 people and our guide (who had 25 years of experience) and we had an empty road vs being out there with 20+ riders with the bigger company (we saw them setting up as we were taking off down the mountain). The bikes Mountain Riders use are heavier and have bigger tires and drum brakes, which means you go faster and feel safer going around turns. Both our guide and our driver were amazing and we learned a ton in the van, including which celebrities live in which houses up in the mountains and where to get the best donuts on a stick. We had a great stop for breakfast and coffee before a nice easy downhill coast back to the starting point. I don't regret skipping the sunrise tour at the top of the mountain and just going with the pre-dawn tour. We got to see all the colors in the sky but we stayed 10 degrees warmer and got 2 more hours of sleep. My one tip is to dress warmer than you think you need (and bring gloves!) because at least in late Nov it gets cold at 6500 feet!

Fun bike ride on any weather
Our first tour in Maui did not disappoint. Despite some light rain and fog we all had a blast riding down the Haleakala Crater road. Our bike leader, Bobby, was entertaining and helpful to everyone in the group. I had not been on a bike in years and the downhill trip was very easy and memorable. Would highly recommend!

No summit and limited route- be aware of what you are getting
We booked this as one of our excursions through Norwegian cruise. It was ok. I thought we would go to the peak but found out when we got there we only went about 2/3 of the way up. Then there is a middle section of the road now closed to tourists so we did the top part of our ride 2x. Then got back in the van and drove through the middle section. We stopped at a town for food/shopping before riding the last few miles down which is downhill but not really a mountain type experience anymore at lower elevation. Our group did not stay together. If that makes you nervous you can go more slow and stay with the guide. If I had known the itinerary I might not have booked this since I really wanted to go into the Haleakala National park and get to the summit.

Self-Guided no pressure. Not sunrise, but not necessary if you like a causal morning.
Self-guided. You bike at your own pace, no pressure. Guide nearby for emergency's but not pushing you. Good for small groups. Takes fun photos.

It was breathtaking. Forget "layers," and think, "20-30°F" before sunrise– about 45 minutes after you arrive… Now, you understand. Different Tours used different bicycles from single speed to 24 speed Mountain bikes. You do not need to peddle but for one section, that is, approximately 1/10 of a mile, if that. The interruption in the ride for the town below is unfortunate, but some groups ride the top twice to make up for the loss. You do not need to be an experienced rider, but it only adds to the fun. I took off a point because of the requested heavy tipping after paying a premium (>$250)for the opportunity to ride in a van, use a simple bike and helmetand pay our way for breakfast. No vouchers. It was a little excessive.

We booked with this company after the original company we booked with canceled our reservation the day before our excursion because we were the only ones booked in that time slot. This company has older bikes but they seemed to be well maintained. We did the sunrise tour, we were the lucky 50% that got an amazing sunrise. It is not the guides fault if it ends up too cloudy to see a sunrise. It was 35 degrees up there so dress warm. They provided a hooded fleece lined poncho to wrap around yourself while you wait for the sunrise, that was a nice surprise. The ride down the volcano felt safe being able to ride in the middle of the car lane. We liked the guided tour so that we didn’t have to worry about when to ride on the side so cars could pass. The van following us let the lead know and then we would all move over. There isn’t very much vehicle traffic going down the mountain so it was a very nice ride down. I am not a biker by any means, truth be told it had been a few years since I have been on a bike and we are in our 50’s so I was a little nervous but I had a blast. The stop in the little town for a drink or snack was very enjoyable. Make sure you stop in the store that carries the cookies from the Maui Cookie Lady (delicious). You can bring a backpack that you leave on the bus, for water bottles, snacks, and a place to put the clothes you take off as it warms up. Just be prepared to tip half to the bus drivers after they bring you down to the beginning of the biking part and the other half of the tip to the guides at the end of the biking part. We were not prepared to do that so we gave it all at the end and they said they would give the portion to the bus drivers. Everyone we dealt with was kind, funny, and informative.

My wife and I had such a wonderful time heading up to Haleakala with Aleeka followed by the downhill bike tour with Manny. Both had us cracking up with laughter many times and their knowledge and expertise made both portions of the excursion worthwhile. Most importantly we felt safe because driving up to the sunrise and then biking 18 miles can be nerve racking, but we were in good hands and I would definitely recommend this to anyone (just dress warm!).

To start Nani greeted us at 3a with a negative attitude when asking what the options are for a reschedule or refund if the weather is unfit for biking down since it was down pouring when we arrived. When we asked about it she said that is not an option. Telling us we would only receive $100 back if we wanted to not go up now or only if they decide it is unfit - continuing with an attitude to tell us how she could have filled our two spots. The negativity when arriving at 3am and paying for something that is suppose to be a magical experience is not what we expected. They let us know only 4 tour groups can go up to the National Park. Do yourself a favor and look for any of those other 3 groups!

We decided since it would be the same amount refunded either way we may as well try to go up to the top. It was complete fog and rained the whole way up and no sunset view was seen which is okay because they can not control the weather.

When we got to the biking portion the bikes condition is not good with no splash guards, breaks squeaking the whole time. We started our way down which was okay in the start and after a few miles the rain started again getting extreme. All of us where soaking in water, shoes were filled with water, and no one wanted to continue - honestly it was not safe to continue one women could not see anything in front of her. On our way back, we went in a smaller van, which it was NOT covid friendly at all. Half the guests did not have masks and in no way where you even 6ft apart. We had someone from another party next to us with no mask. It was about 13 people inside a small van with half the people wearing no mask.

All in all this was a waste of our money and we are shocked that no partial refund or not even a credit for a future visit was offered for a shortened experience. I would NOT recommend this at all if the weather is spotty and honestly would just say look for another company all together that gives more flexibility. The best part of the day was knowing that the experience was over 2 hours early and we could get back to feeling safe distance from people.

So sorry for your experience. As you mentioned we do not control the weather. It does rain frequently this is Hawaii. We have put in covid safety rules and have cameras across the property. Seems the people on your tour were wearing masks. All the tours have the same cancelation policy. Once again sorry for the bad weather

    Extremely disappointed with this company.

First, I got received texts about 2 weeks before our booked trip telling us we might have our tour cancelled because it wasn’t the one at sunrise. They offered to add us to the sunrise tour (to go we’d have to get up at 3am while on vacation), but we opted to wait it out and see if more people booked the later tour. I was told I’d be given 48 hours notice when/ if the tour time we wanted would be cancelled. But, the same day I was contacted via text, I got a confirmation email from the company confirming our tour during the later time frame (my understanding is that if the later time frame was to be cancelled, we wouldn’t get a confirmation email).

The day before our booked tour (less than 24 hours), I received another text that just said “Your tour tomorrow is cancelled...” Totally unprofessional. I mentioned the confirmation email I got after the texts 2 weeks before and there was no response. I asked for an email confirming a full refund and a screen shot of the refund in process. They said they’d start the refund process.

It has almost been a month since this happened. I got a confirmation email that the refund was processing (seeing that I got a confirmation email that our tour was confirmed, I don’t trust this company’s confirmation emails), but no refund has posted whatsoever. I’ve tried to call multiple times and it goes straight to voicemail. I’ve left voicemails and get no calls back. I’ve emailed and gotten no response.

I’ll be filing a claim with my credit card company today to get my money back. I gave them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to communication, but Its been weeks and enough is enough.

This company is completely unprofessional. Don’t waste your time.

I want to start off by saying that I think the staff, the drivers and our tour guides were amazing people! They were welcoming, made us feel comfortable and safe throughout the trip. They provided pick up close to your hotel (depending on location) During the tour, our guides shared with us a lot of interesting stories about Maui, its history, geography etc. They even provided us with weatherproof jackets and blankets while we camped out on the mountain waiting for the sunrise. Mt. Haleakala sunrise comes highly recommended and it is definitely a majestic view of the sunrise (especially when you are seeing it above the clouds at 10,000 feet above sea level).
However, if sunrise is really not your thing and riding downhill is not what gets you excited, please skip this tour, and instead drive up to Mt. Haleakala in your private vehicle to view the sunset. It will save you a lot of time and $$$.
However, if this is something you are looking forward to, I highly, highly, recommend that you dress warmly AND take some HOT HANDS (gel hand warmers) with you, because even five layers of clothing was not enough to keep us from freezing. It was 14 degrees F up on the mountain with winds as strong as 40-50 mph.
The low rating of this trip reflects my personal experience with this activity. I did not enjoy the tour as much the other avid bikers in the group, and some of it had to do with being out on the cold mountain for two hours, the rain towards the end of our bike ride and because the whole activity took up nearly 10 hours of the day. The hairpin turns down the mountain were intimidating and I could not keep pace with the group. Mind you, the ride itself is not physically demanding, but it challenged your biking skills and confidence going round those bends.

This is a really beautiful tour! it can not be understated how cold the top of the summit is at sunrise. We were there with 65 mph winds, it was so cold but very beautiful. The Van driver parked perfectly that when we got too cold we could sit in the van and still watch the sunset. I would have never thought Maui could get that cold. We did bring many layers but should have also packed a hat and gloves.
I would suggest labeling the parking site as "Park here for Mountain Riders"- just makes it easier when it is so dark and one is not familiar with the area.
The bike guides were great and were very reassuring. They did get ahead but would stop and let everyone catch up. It was a very knowledgeable tour and very friendly staff.

I cannot speak more highly of this company. They provided our family with the highlight of our trip to Hawaii. Our tour guides on the way up to the volcano site for sunrise were G and Spencer and they could not have been more friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of the mountain. Hollywood Joe and John took over the bike trip and provided us with a once in a lifetime experience. They were both so professional and entertaining. Joe sensing that my daughter was nervous took her under his wing to make sure she felt safe during the entire experience. If you do one thing in Maui, make this trip with this company. Mountain Riders is the very best!

Very poor attention to COVID measures. None of the staff wore masks in the office or more importantly in the 40 minute bus ride up the mountain. The van held 12 people, no windows open, staff didn’t wear masks and didn’t ask or enforce guests to wear them. Very awkward ride up for anyone being conscientious.

Our number one concern at Mountain Riders is the health and safety of our staff and guests. We follow all State and County Mandates and Regulations regarding COVID and have from the beginning. All travelers coming into Maui are mandated to show proof of vaccination and/or have a recent negative COVID test. The bus for Sunrise is a 25 passenger vehicle which currently is running at half capacity with 12 passengers as per the mandates and regulations. We are conscientious of all of our guests, the tours for the most part are conducted outdoors on a bike.

The sunrise is unmatched. Make sure to bring WARM WARM clothes. Gloves, hat, everything. It was a windy windy cold expereince. We used extra socks as gloves if you forgot yours. Be respectful of your neighbors as you wait for the sunrise to ensure you can get excellent pictures! They might share their blanket with you if you are kind :). The bike tour itself has changed over the years. If you want the experience of motorcycling, but down want to actually motor cycle...it feels similar to that. You move down the mountain in a group, pulling over to avoid cars and staying together. exciting to try, but the sunrise is the highlight. You will be loading bikes in and out of a trailer to avoid more traffic dense areas. Visitng Makawao is a real treat too! It is a rural ranching town with incredible personality. Bobby knows how to treat people right and make sure you have a great morning.
