Coconut Island, also known as Moku Ola, which literally means “island of life” in the Hawaiian language, used to be a site of an ancient temple dedicated to healing. During the olden times, the island's spring waters were known to cure all sorts of ailments. The island is also known as a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiians who broke the law. All they have to do was swim to the island without getting caught by the warriors chasing them then they will be pardoned for whatever crime they had committed.

Shore dive as good as a boat dive
I had my two Shore dives with divemaster Gabriel and he gave me beautiful tours. We saw lots of coral, several turtles, big puffer and even an eagle ray. Daniel showed me beautiful spots and gave me all the time I needed to make pictures. He was very helpfull and have me a very nice day diving. With a dive spot like this you don’t need to do a boat dive.

      Book this!
This was such a fun way to snorkel with the experts. They took us to the best spots to see tons of fish and made sure we were doing it safely and respectfully to the ocean and her creatures. Emma and Aukai were so awesome!! Great experience would recommend to anyone coming to Hilo.

      Treacherous shore dive entry point
The dive shop is an easy 20 minute walk from the cruise ship terminal. Online reservations were easy and we were able to choose a dive time that matched well with our ship’s arrival. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy this diving experience. The entry & exit of the shore dive was more challenging and dangerous than expected. The shore was rocky and it was difficult to bring our gear to the water and get our fins in the water once we were in. We had to climb down and walk over very uneven terrain; we had a companion fall into a small crevice with his full gear on and had to be helped to get up. We wish we had been told to wear a long wetsuit and even gloves as the rocks were sharp and many of us were cut and bleeding as we were going in and getting out of the water. We basically had to sit on the rocks and slowly ease our way into the surf. Putting on our fins was a challenge as we were fighting the surge and trying not to get rocked against the many rocks all around us; climbing out of the water had to be done on our knees which was difficult because of the surge. The dive itself was lovely once you were able to make it out of the rocky terrain but the experience was marred by our entry point. We chose to abort our second dive as we did not feel safe and we were worried about getting injured. There was no accreditation card check when we came to the dive shop nor was our medical form requested so, although our dive guide was good, we would be hesitant to recommend this dive shop and certainly would not recommend the shore dive unless you are experienced, had a full wet suit and gloves, and able to carry your gear over treacherous terrain and swim through a rocky sea bed. As master divers, we are experienced and always up for a challenge but this dive was too much for us.

Great diving and lots of marine life!
Wonderful company to dive with! They were very responsive predive and communicative on the day of. I did two shore dives at Sea turtle cove and we had to dive off lava rocks and it was a bit tricky to get in and out. But there were lots of marine life to be seen, including turtles. The water was a bit murky that day but the diving was still great. Thanks Mark!

      Highly recommended!!
We had a wonderful experience! It was cloudy, but water was not cold. Our guide, Isaiah, was friendly, knowledgeable, and well-prepared. We saw many kinds of fish at two spots. Also, turtles at the first spot, and some corals at the second spot. Highly recommended!!

Paddling around Hilo Bay inside the breakwater
We rented kayaks and had a great time! Easy to get to the water using a cart. The breakwater created calm water so safety wasnt an issue. Do bring sunscreen though or you will burn on the water.

      Awesome Whale Watching Tour
My sister & I thoroughly enjoyed the whale watching boat tour. Captain Devin and Crewman Isaiah were helpful and friendly. The weather was clear & sunny and the ocean was gently rolling. The whales were in a playful mood. It was exciting to see the whales up close. We would wholeheartedly recommend this tour. Suggest bringing at least two cameras and have them ready to go at a moment’s notice. Best to take short video rather than try to take photos. Mahalo nui loa, Hilo Ocean Adventures!

      Family Dive Trip
We want to thank Mike and Matt and the rest of the Team at Hilo Ocean Adventures. We had planned a family dive trip for months and when the time came they pulled it all together for us and even went over and above to make our day of diving super special. They are very organized and focused on diver safety but still making it lots of fun. I highly recommend you check them out for all watersports when in Hilo. "Wild Bill"

Diving good but pre-dive communication poor
The good: The dive itself was pretty good. Absolutely beautiful reef, and I do appreciate they took me out being that there were no other divers that day. The bad: As a scuba shop, if you're going to be extremely strict on safety, etc. that's totally respectable. But then the pre-dive communication needs to improved. A lot. - 3-4 months ago: I booked a boat dive with Hilo Ocean Adventures. - 2 weeks before the dive, they called me and said a private charter had been booked, so their boat was no longer available (not sure that was true). I could still do a shore dive with them. Fine. - 1-2 weeks prior to dive: Email reminders sent to me. I reviewed these emails later (post dive) and it is NOT clear enough that there is a waiver AND a medical form, and it is NOT made clear how important the medical form is. - One day prior to the dive I was texted with: Please sign waiver and medical form. - Day of dive: I arrive at the shop, and the guide says, "If you take any prescription medication whatsoever, you cannot go diving, unless you have a signed note from your doctor." This would have been great to know 1-2-3-4 weeks before my dive. This should be made much more clear in your email / text communications, not 30 minutes before I go diving. At the very least, they should have a process where, if a week before the dive, they don't have the info they need, CALL me. The guide also proceeded to tell us that under no circumstances could we go to the volcano or drive to Kona post-dive that day, due to elevation changes. Again, would have been nice to know weeks/months ago when we were planning our Hawaii trip. As a dive shop on Big Island, I think they need to understand their customers (tourists) better. I imagine most people going to Hawaii are there for 3-6 days. And they have specific plans on most days, so flexibility is not a luxury we have. Lastly, it was a little disappointing that we went to the exact same spot for both dives.

Hands Down the BEST whale watch tour on the Big Island
What confirms the quality of this tour is that 2 days after this one we went on the Body Glove whale watch tour out of Kailuah Kona. There was simply no comparison. This tour blew Body Glove away in every possible aspect. The crew were nicer and much more informative. They actually searched for whales and were happy to move from one group of whales to another. The Body Glove tour found 3 whales 100 yards from shore, cut the engines and drifted for 1-1/2 hours. The whales disappeared after 30 minutes. They seemed more interested in conserving fuel than finding whales. I should add that I used to work for the Sea Shepherd and Paul Watson. I have probably been on over 100 whale watch tours all over the USA. I know a good one from a bad one. This one was very good. Worth every penny. When compared side by side to the more popular, more expensive Body Glove tour it really rises above. THIS IS THE TOUR YOU WANT TO TAKE ON THE BIG ISLAND. It is worth the drive from Kona.

Whales and whales in Hilo Bay
Matt and Morgan had us out in the water seeing whales in style. Comfortable and safe boat, informative and helpful crew. We had dozens of sightings. Got in the water to listen Morgan helped me feel ok in the open ocean. Could hear some but mainly saw them come so close! Wonderful.

      Check box for the dive
Wasn't really impressed with this organization for diving. The company was disorganized and our second dive in a two-tank trip, ended after 24 minutes due to impending darkness. A lot of money and not much value; really should have gotten a refund. A little better organization would have solved this, and the crew seemed more interested in checking the box vs. customer service. Would not recommend this dive shop and would recommend diving on the Kona side instead.

Great little excursion in Reed's Bay & around Coconut Island. Staff was helpful, full of aloha... our guide Morgan was attentive & had a great attitude. He showed us (beginners) some tips & was full of info, insights, & patience during our kayak outing. Ocean was a bit choppy that day, making for slow going at first, but we felt safe & had a great time. Mahalo!

Fantastic kayak experience with Adam! Easy pick up and getting to the park. We enjoyed an easy paddle along the coast and into the ice pool area where we saw turtles and fish and birds. There were snacks and drinks if we wanted and lovely conversation. Would definitely recommend-rain or shine!

With all the choices of activities I would skip this one. There was no instruction which was fine for those of us who were experienced but there were people who’d never kayaked and it was painful for them and painful to watch. We had to wheel our kayaks to and from the drop point and it was not “just across the street. The guide was a nice guy but offered little beyond answering questions. There was no “longest River”.
