Ocean Encounters Manta - Manta Ray Night Snorkeling
Magical Experience! I’ve lived in Hawaii all my life. I’ve never went Manya Ray Snorkeling, till just recently, now I want to go all the time. This last time I had a friend that just moved to Hawaii. I wanted her to experience the Manta Ray Snorkeling. Turned out, I didn’t know that she didn’t know how to swim lol… Luckily this tour had 2 captains. Captain Sage was very knowledgeable about the ocean (and the Mantas) he made sure that my friend was in good hands. They gave her an extra floating device and he helped her from the boat to the light board and back. This 830pm night tour was so beautiful. The boat ride alone was worth it! They provide the wet suit and snorkel. Captain Taylor drove the boat & was really helpful. We ended up in the best spot. There must have been close to a hundred Mantas. We were told that it was a good night. I highly recommend this tour! Don't forget to tip the crew. Support local businesses.

Next Time I'm Going to the Pier!
I was booked on the Bite Me 4 originally. They texted me at the dock about 10 minutes before we were to board the boat due to weather advisory. I understand safety very well and I appreciate taking precautions, but I knew about the advisory the night before. Seems like the captain could have made the call sooner than 10 minutes before boarding. It gets better though. I re-booked on the Bite Me 3 and when I showed up to the dock, the Bite Me 4 was fueling up alongside the Bite Me 3. I asked the captain on the 4 if he had been catching any fish. He responded bluntly by saying " I haven't caught anything, I haven't been out yet". Well at 6:30 AM its obvious that I'm not asking if you caught fish today. It's pretty clear to anybody with half a brain that I was asking about the last few days or even weeks. If I wanted to go fishing with a smart ass, I'd go fishing with my wife. And that is free!! When I boarded the Bite Me 3, the guy next to me says " I'm glad we didn't go on the Bite Me 4 because that captain seemed like an ahole". True Story! I will say that the crew on the 3 were pretty cool. We didn't catch a damn thing and that's fishing, but I will give them kudos because they at least showed the people who are paying their wages some respect. A little advise to the Bite Me 4 Cap -- You are representing your entire fleet when you speak to customers, even if they are not fishing on your boat. Show some respect!

      No-fishing Fishing trip
Disappointed and mislead. We signed up for the four-six hour shared sports fishing. We did not fish. There were 5 individuals in our group. Only one person got to hold a rod (after the crewman casted and hooked the fish) and pulled in one bait fish (longer than 12”). The bait was not even used as chum. It was thrown on ice and put in a cooler, not even “shared” with the person who reeled it in. This trip should basically have been booked as a boat ride. There is no guarantee that you will catch a fish - that’s fine - that’s fishing. However, on a fishing trip it is expected that you should be able to cast and drop a line in the water and try/hope to catch a fish….. if you want to fish, this is not the trip for you.

Best fishing charter yet! Brian and cam are definitely the guys I want to go with again! Saw pilot whales, tons of porpoise and a sea turtle at the end! Not to mention the fish!! Got one beautiful tuna and 2 marlin at the same time but lost one! Definitely worth the full day! Cam, you the man! Thanks for helping get that big fish in

      Terrible Experience!
Big fat ONE! First attempt, we were rescheduled on a different boat and then the boat wouldn’t start. They advertise the largest fleet in Hawaii and they means nothing. Had a boat issue and no substitute was offered. There was another boat sitting in the harbor. No discount offered since they can’t seem to maintain their fleet. On our second attempt, again rescheduled to a different boat and we were cancelled due to weather. Got a call 3 minutes before our arrival time. No we did not bring a banana! I would highly encourage you to look elsewhere for a charter. I get things happen but responses for the cancellations left us feeling like “Oh well, not our problem”.

      Bad experience
Much better operators in the area. Keep looking. If you think you might save a buck here, you’ll be wishing you spent more later when your experience falls well short of expectations due to poorly managed equipment leading to a totally failed trip. Other operators with properly working gear nearby provided exactly what was expected. I would stay away

      Some key things missing
We did the 5pm manta ray tour. One thing I was looking forward to were the advertised “knowledgeable staff” who would educate us about the mantas. Sadly, this didn’t happen. This is after the tour cost 20% more than advertised bc “the prices went up at the new year.” I was also not sure about nighttime ocean in the winter, but I was reassured when I saw that “wetsuits are provided.” What I didn’t know was that it was just a Shorty top and that we would be simply floating on the water service for an hour, not actually swimming around. So… I got very cold out there. There are several times I almost bailed to get back on the boat and get warm, but we were having a bad night for Manta Ray sightings so I didn’t want to miss what little there was to see. So I stuck it out, as did most others. There were a few passengers shivering violently when we got back on the boat- I felt so bad for them! It’s a few days later and I am sick at home with a cold. I wish I and others had had a full wetsuit. Overall, a bummer of a trip! If the offerings were as advertised, it would’ve been four stars.

      Wonderful Whale Watching
Wonderful Whale Watching with bonus of tons of dolphins. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. It was a manageable group and didn’t feel like a herd of people smooshed on a boat. I would imagine that the other offerings are well managed and good experiences.

Not the best customer service and experience
We did not have the best time on this boat. The captain and deck hand did not let us do anything. They even caught the bait fish as the teenagers in our group looked on. After setting all the lines we were left on deck by ourselves to sit there and pass the time. They did not engage with us or ask if we would like to know about anything. It would have been nice to give the young people a little information or simply sit in the bucket chair. We got nothing, so the trip was a very long 4hrs. I understand not catching fish, that’s part of the game. This issue is that there was not a plan B or even a discussion on what some options are. The only thing discussed were the tips and how this is the way they made money. As well a the tipping signs in the boat. My recommendation is your company needs to learn how to read the room and engage with their customers to see if they need anything or want to see around the boat etc. at least try to make it fun especially for the younger people on the boat.

      It was okay
There were positives and not so positive moments. Starting with areas to improve is communication. On the website it's unclear what's available because everything seems available at the same time. Like you could book a private charter and shared charter of the same boat on the same date and time. So it's pointless l, just have to call them. The other part of communication is I received two sets of instructions for getting on the boat. One set was correct and the other was incorrect. Interestingly enough, the correct instructions looked less official, an email saying meet behind the gas pumps. The incorrect instructions included a diagram and google map keywords. Having been misled, I followed the more official looking instructions just to be told otherwise. The neutral part of the review is we didn't catch any fish, not even a bite. A few of us fell asleep. The good part of the review is the boat was very clean.

      Great time with mantas
The manta ray experience was absolutely surreal! The guys on the boat provide everything you need and are super knowledge. Me and my family had an amazing time, and despite my daughter having really bad motion sickness on the rocky boat, the guys were very accommodating and knew exactly what to do. Being so close to manta rays is definitely worth it and is a once in a lifetime opportunity. 10/10!

      Great experience
Captain Ron and Cameron were a great team. They were nice, personable, and seemed knowledgeable. We caught an 80lb Blue Marlin. They gave us as much as we wanted of the fish. Catching fish isn’t guaranteed but they try their best to make sure it happens. We had a great experience.

      A must do
We did the night mantra rays snorkel. This is definitely a must do if visiting the big island. After the 30-40 min boat ride we got to the site. As soon as we got into the mantra rays were there. The plankton looked like a snow globe in the water. There must have been 15-20 rays swimming around you. You can not touch them for their protection. But they will touch you. You are given a wetsuit shirt. We have done a lot of different snorkeling types of tours. This surpassed our exceptions. Tour guides were great and informative. They do have water and some snacks.

      Great Manta Ray Night Snorkel
We had a great time on our manta ray night snorkel! We joined the 5pm boat, made it to the snorkel spot at 5:45, and were in the water with the manta rays soon after. Watching the the manta rays was an incredible experience and we’re so happy we had the opportunity to go! We loved sitting on the front of the boat on the ride back, watching the stars, bioluminescence, and chatting with one of the crew members. The crew was great and we hope to go again in the future.

What an incredible day! Captain Nate and Aaron were the best! No fish were biting in the first few hours, but Aaron kept us entertained with stories and jokes. The last hour we caught fish after fish (two yellowfin Ahi and two Aku). Then, when we were headed back to the dock, Captain Nate spotted some Mahi-Mahi following us, and BAM! We had two Mahi-Mahi strikes at the exact same time! One of them got off the hook, but the other one was brought aboard at 31 lbs, 57 1/2 inches. What an exciting day! Highly recommend! Thanks, Nate and Aaron for a great day of sport fishing!

We had an absolutely marvelous day, thanks in large part to the skipper, Taylor and skipper to be, Momi, who made the day special, even with some first timers. Our activities included deep sea fishing, swimming w/dolphins, and snorkeling in the grotto with tropical fish! The crew took us where we wanted to go and were extremely supportive of any and all of our requests. Half of our group was from the East coast and had the day of their lives! All of the equipment, down to the coolers, were provided by the crew. The crew's knowledge and expertise made it the most memorable day which included cleaning 100 pounds of fish caught. We had a delicious dinner of Oh-no fish that night! Thanks Taylor and Momi from a thankful group of 8, some first timers.

Reserved a boat that was supposed to be air-conditioned. We were sailing on the Bite Me 6 and there was no A/C. Just long plastic strips in the doorway. Those inside suffered from lack of fresh air and the strong smell of diesel fuel. Even though the passengers had taken Dramamine, the hot and stuffy air and the fuel smell combined to make two sick; one seeking the back of the boat three times. He was miserable due to those conditions along with rough seas. Captain Nate said it was the second roughest water he sailed. One fish caught on the way back to port, as we were told it was going to get rougher once we got around the point, so cut the trip short. Also, lack of outside seating. Two coolers on either side of the doorway for six people; no actual seats. Two had to stand as the boat bucked it way back; disappointing trip.

Our charter had 6 people and 5 rods, so if you were number 6 you paid for a 4 hour boat ride (I was number 6). I asked the crew if we could fish for smaller fish, they said no, only troll for marlin and got rude when I asked. Crew were grouchy and didn't talk to any of the guests. I heard them talking about how much they didn't want to be out on the water. Terrible experience.

A great day spent on the "Ocean Encounters" for the whole family. Nine of us, ages 1 to 66.
Saw dolphins on the way out of the harbor and soon caught a blue Marlin. After 18 minutes of reeling, caught and released a nice fish.
Fished our way over to Kealakekua Bay and snorkeled for an hour. A really great place to snorkel, especially as the bottom dropped off to a good depth.
Later caught a 2 foot Yellow Fin Tuna which put up a good fight and fed us for the next 3 days. Yum!
Nice day to be out and seeing the island from 3-4 miles out was great.
Charlie and Sean are great, especially cleaning the tuna and telling us how to cook it.

Aloha, Thank you for sharing your excursion with us, sounds like you had an amazing day. Fishing/snorkeling combo charters are very popular for us and a good way to spend the afternoon. The crew on Ocean Encounters is the best! Blue Marlin, that's a fish of a life time, and very exciting to catch! All in all sounds like you had a great day. Once again thank you for your review. We hope you had a good vacation and safe travels home. Mahalo, Bite Me Sportfishing Charter Team.
