What to expect
  • Following pickup at the Hilo cruise port, board a tour vehicle and set out over the back roads of the Big Island to explore its spectacular natural features.  Arrive first at Rainbow Falls, known in Hawaiian as wainuenue, the falls crash over a natural lava cave, throwing up rainbows almost every sunny day in the rising mist.  Drive through old-growth mango groves and through the verdant foliage of the Nanawale Forest, stopping to see the recent lava flow that caused the town of Pahoa to evacuate. See the few houses and commercial buildings that were burnt by the oozing fire. View dramatic scenery in spots where the burning lava met the cool, salty sea. Stop in Kaimu to see the site of the former Queen bath and town, both destroyed by a lava flow in 1990, now being reclaimed by the wild rainforest. View an exhibit showing what the area used to look like and snap photos of the active volcanic vent in the distance. Stroll down the black sand beach, reached via a 15-minute walk over old lava flows. Continue to Lava Tree State Park, where lava burst from fissures in the ground and coated the Ohia trees, leaving amazing tree molds. See the warm springs at Ahalanui, geothermally heated by water traveling through lava tubes.  Stop at a dramatic overlook, surrounded by salt cedar pine trees and home to the old Kings Trails. Admire views of the waves crashing below towering sea cliffs. Your half-day tour ends with drop-off back at the Hilo port. Worry-free Shore Excursion: We will ensure your timely return to the Hilo port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. See our terms and conditions for full details.

Great day for Volcano Safari
Feb 2020 • Couples
Four of us were booked for the Volcano Safari while in Hilo for the day with NCL. It did not disappoint. Luana and Kayla were amazing. Very friendly, knowledgeable and were willing and open to suggestions. They are both new so we expected some snafus but there were little to speak of, really. They have firsthand knowledge of the places we went and were able to go places that any cruise excursion would never have gone. Well worth the price and time. My one suggestion would be to map out the day a little better to be a little more succinct. We backtracked quite a bit and probably could have either been back earlier or squeezed in another place. All in all, a great day! Will definitely recommend!

Aloha Sydney we were so happy to have your join us on our new Volcano Safari Tour! Thank you for the kind review and critique and will be sure to share it with the others. we have to back track on a few roads due to the lava that has blocked them. Hawaii state is working on clearing some of them so that will help in the future for sure. :)

Great Experience!
Dec 2017 • Couples
After disembarking from the ship, we met Bob. Besides ourselves, there was another couple.
Bob was very engaging and knowledgeable; since he is a Native of the island he was able to tell us numerous stories and insights into the history and current status of Hilo. As outlined in the site, we saw the Lava Forest and Rainbow Falls, and stopped and had lunch at the Macadamia Nut farm. It was lovely just having the four of us, since we were able to interact and have all of our questions answered. (We saw backroads, and even where Bob and his family live.)
The up close and personal tour is the only way to go, as compared to the big green buses at some of our other stops.

Bob, thank you for a great day, and wish we had your tour when we saw you again in Kona. Also, we hope you had a great time at the Rose Parade!

A Great Alternative!
Oct 2017 • Couples
We had been to The Big Island and previously visited the Volcano National Park, so we wanted to do something different. This trip we actually saw water flowing at Rainbow Falls, but unfortunately it was raining, so no rainbow. Edmond took us to the lava forest and fields, which was very interesting.

Amazing Sunset Lava Cruise!
Oct 2017 • Couples
After reading the reviews on the lava boat tours we decided on this cruise because it was a smaller group. Didn't really know what to expect but it far exceeded our expectations and was an amazing up close tour of the volcano and lava. The pictures really don't capture how amazing this tour really was. The Captain and crew mate were so friendly made the trip a memory of a lifetime. Don't hesitate on this one... you won't regret anything. I would suggest for the queasy folks... take your anti-nausea medication because it's an exciting ride.

Aloha, we no longer are able to provide a boat to the last lava eruption sight, however we are now proving a tour into the Lava Devastation area starting Jan 2020!
