About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Joe R0 contributionsBest guide ever!We are in our late 70s and have traveled all over and used many guides. I can easily say that Erik was the best ever. He’s an expert in volcanoes and imparts that knowledge with passion and without being condescending. He listened carefully to what we were interested in and planned our hike accordingly. He was fun to be with because he gave us an understanding of what we were seeing. He also gave us great recommendations for other areas we might want to see on the Big Island. Malia handled the paperwork flawlessly. We’ll definitely use Kilauea Eco-Guides again.Written January 20, 2024
- SSJ5130 contributionsVery informative tour. Highly recommend!Erik was our guide and was extremely informative. He came prepared with ponchos for all 5 of us when it all of a sudden it started to rain. Definitely got so much more out of the visit to the volcano national park by doing this private tour with Erik than we could have ever just visiting ourselves. Highly recommend booking this tour!Written June 26, 2022
- Parasoltravelco0 contributionsAwesome Private TourMy husband and I had a wonderful day with Michelle as our guide. She shared her wealth of knowledge and is so passionate about the park. We highly recommend taking a private tour with Kilauea EcoGuides! There is no way we could have learned this much by hiking on our own. Loved every minute of it!Written April 27, 2021
- Ken K0 contributionsSuper GuideHad a great 6 hour tour with Eric. Super knowledgeable (his USGS experience, knowledge of volcanoes, flora (including Latin names) and fauna and Hawaiian culture) and took us on a number of interesting hikes. Also helpful suggestions for the following days.Written February 11, 2021
- audreyc09170 contributionsBest Day of our Vacation! We traveled to the Big Island for my 30th birthday and I wanted to go hiking at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. After doing days worth of research, we decided to spring for a private hiking tour with Kilauea EcoGuides. I contacted them and got a very friendly response within 24 hours. Our guide, Nate, grew up on the island and was incredibly knowledgable about the island, the National Park, and the Hawaiian Culture. He took the lead on where to take us to hike and what to see based off of our likes and our wants for the day. He was willing to change course at any moment and was happy to talk about off-topic things that we were interested in (like the Hawaiian language and traditional Hawaiian legends and stories in the culture). I already loved the islands, but he helped me appreciate them and see them in a completely new way. While he was sharing these stories and all of this information, we were out in the real world applying our learning throughout each area of the park we traveled to. I am so happy that we worked with Kilauea EcoGuides for this experience. If you are adventurous and want something "off the beaten path" I highly recommend working with this company. It is a small, family owned business that will share their rich Hawaiian culture and beautiful island land with you for as long as you wish. We feel lucky to have had this experience-- and on my birthday none the less! Mahalo Nate and Malia for all of your hard work and an amazing time.Written February 20, 2020
- 334francesw0 contributionsAwesome visit in the parkThree of us did a 3 hour private tour with Erik, the owner of this small family business. Erik is a geologist and have lived near the park for years, extremely knowledgeable, patient and friendly. We did a hike down to the caldera then back up to see some other parts of the park, and Erik gave us tons of information about the volcano, the ecosystem in the park and on the island, and we had an awesome time. I would highly recommend visiting the park with Erik!Written September 2, 2019
- travlite2240 contributionsA Phenomal Experience in Volcano National ParkThis was a once in a lifetime experience. Erik was our guide for a three hour tour of the park. My wife injured her foot just the day before the tour. No worries, Erik not only encouraged her to be a part of the tour, he tailored it so that we could drive to all points and see the amazing sights without much walking. Erik is highly knowledgable, warm and friendly. We gained so much knowledge about the islands of Hawaii, volcano eruption, the flora growing in the park, and life in general on the Big Island. I highly, highly recommend this tour with Erik. You are guaranteed a customized tour suitable for you and your group, whether it involves hiking among the lava, or touring within your car. You will absolutely enjoy this experience!!!!Written August 28, 2019
- PetraUtrecht0 contributionsLearned everything about the volcanoOur guide Erik knows the park extemely well and is very passionate about vulcanos in general and this park in particular. He took us to several places in the park for short hikes with beautiful overviews and showed us everything vulcano and lava, from beginning to end. He also explained the local sacred meaning of the volcano and gave got lots of info of all the plants and animals that live there. Very interesting and fun day!Written August 14, 2019
- CRigoulot0 contributionsWonderful Tour of Volcanoes National ParkOur group went out on a six-hour tour with Erik. We only had one day to see the park, and this was certainly the best way to do it! Erik is a wealth of knowledge - not only about Hawaii's natural history but its cultural history as well and operates his tours in a manner which pays respect to both. He showed us many things that we would have been oblivious to had we set out to explore the park on our own and answered the many questions we had. The tour was very reasonably priced and so much more personal than some of the other options out there. I cannot recommend Kilauea EcoGuides enough!Written July 11, 2019
- TheSushiDog0 contributionsAmazing Kilauea - Beyond the Standard Bus TourWow! What an amazing day! It was our first time visiting a live volcano and, after some Trip Advisor research, we chose Kilauea EcoGuides. The website and online booking process was smooth and friendly. They sent us a number of pre-tour follow-up emails to ask our preferences but, as we had never visited a volcano before, we left the guiding to them. We chose the 3-hour tour. Erik was our guide and he met us promptly at the Volcano House at 1pm. He knowledge of Kilauea, volcanic geology and Hawaiian culture, flora and fauna was amazing. He’s a self-confessed rock nerd which was great for us! Much of the tour is walking so you can up and personal with the surroundings. We toured the crater rim, steam vents and sulphur field before driving to a number of lava fields where we headed off the beaten track and saw some lava tubes, rare rocks and amazing volcanic and rainforest landscapes. Whilst the tour is 3-hours, we walked about 5 kilometers at an easy pace and generally flat gradient. The tour finished promptly at 4pm and Erik, as a local Volcano Village resident, offered us some local recommendations (which we used and loved!) as well as offering our daughter an opportunity to chat online about geology as she’s studying volcanoes at school! For 2 people who had never visited a volcano before, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and certainly recommend it.Written July 4, 2019
- brandasa0 contributionsAwesome experience! We booked the six hour tour with Erik. While a $170/person may seem expensive for a family, it really felt like a great value! Erik took us all around the the park - usually we were alone in the park - never more than about 20 other people around at most of the stops. He did a great job of weaving science, rocks, flowers, and the Hawaiian culture all together into one well woven picture. It was an excellent day, one that I would highly recommend. While he is a geologist he did a great job of explaining things in easy to understand terms. He hops in your car as you drive from site to site, so it really ends up feeling more like a friend guiding you around his home, than a paid guide. Volcano is typically cool in temperature - but don't forget the sunscreen - I got burnt arms today!Written July 3, 2019
- arizonawonder0 contributionsA Kilauea EcoGuides tour is an excellent way to explore Volcanoes National Park!I don't typically write reviews, but felt that this tour and our tour guide Eric deserved to be recognized. We've toured many National Parks and this was the most interesting and comprehensive tour we've ever taken. It would have taken us several days to see the various areas of the park, including Kilauea's summit, that Eric showed and explained to us in great detail. He is a trained geologist, but shares his extensive scientific knowledge in a way an average park visitor can enjoy (you don't need to be a science geek!). Kilauea EcoGuides tours may cost a little more than other companies (I'm not 100% sure about that), but taking a personal tour is definitely the way to go to fully experience Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Remember, this park is HUGE… approximately 500 square miles… so use your time wisely and book a Kilauea EcoGuides tour to maximize your visit to this amazing place. There's so much more to see than just the famous Kilauea Caldera (although that it's really impressive and a highlight of the tour)… including great hiking, giant chasms and wonderful photo opportunities you will never forget.Written June 16, 2019
- rubiskies0 contributionsGreat Tour!Ask the self-designated travel agent for our family trip to Hawaii, I discovered that finding group activities appropriate for age eight to eighty is no easy feat. However this tour more than fit the bill. Our guide was kind, knowledgeable and fascinating. My dad, a plant physiologist who has a billion college degrees was appreciative of our guides knowledge of plant life. My teenage daughters were appreciative of the great photo ops. My eight-year-old son was deeply fascinated by the cool crystal volcanic hair things our guide had pointed out to him -particularly as we would have walked right by them without ever noticing. I very much appreciated our guides accommodating attitude, the ease with which I could book the tour and the very reasonable cost of the event. Thanks for some great memories!Written April 12, 2019
- 491paulgm0 contributionsErik is the Real DealWe did a tour with Erik and he provided us with a steady pahoehoe of knowledge on the geology and cultural history of Hawaii’s volcanoes. With effortless grace, he made the park come alive. When our three-hour adventure came to a close, our twelve-year-old daughter asked ‘it’s over already?’ Definitely recommended to book well in advance, he’s a popular guy.Written March 21, 2019
- laurenpbiddle0 contributionsErik is Amazing! If you go to Hawaii Volcano National Park go with Erik! He was so wonderful to work with. It felt as if we were being taken around by not only a local and an expert on the area, but also a friend. Erik has such a warm personality he makes learning about the volcano so fun and exciting. We took a group of 50 people and he made organizing it so easy. If you do anything on the big island go hang out with Erik at Volcano National Park.Written March 13, 2019

Erik gave my husband and me a 3 hour tour of Volcano National Park that was absolutely fascinating and incredibly informative. He covered geology, history, culture and at every turn we found something new and interesting. The tour was worth every penny and I highly recommend this locally owned company. It's a gem and you can't go wrong with a tour from them!

Our family of five (2 grownup parents + 3 boys age 5, 9, 11) went on a private 5 hr tour with Erik. We had a lovely, wonderful time. This was our 2nd time at Volcanoes. Erik was very thoughtful to understand how to make his tour additive to the experience we already had since we wanted to experience new areas of this stunning and rich national park. We all are curious about many different aspects of Volcanoes including: Hawaiian culture, Hawiian mythology, the fauna, the birds, the geology/volcanology. Erik's knowledge was incredibly in-depth in ALL of these areas. He quickly gauged everyone's physical stamina to recommend excellent hikes for us, and knew when to pivot on a dime to challenge the kids a bit more by extending our first hike. He was incredibly attentive to everyone's questions. And we had LOTS of them. My five year old loved calling out, "Erik, what's this?" many..many times. (Oh bless his patience.) He was an overall pleasure to be around for 5 hours which I think is hard to say for even people near and dear to you. And we appreciated how extremely generous he was with his knowledge, clear in his storytelling, and intentional with how he broke down more complicated scientific concepts while showing pictures to our little ones. One of our favorite memories of the Big Island will be hunting for Pele's hairs and reticulite with Erik near a very secluded fissure and spatter rampart wall in a Mars-like lanscape filled with cinder and green spots of young ohia trees. For whoever wants to visit Volcanoes, and truly see and learn about the land, the Hawaiian people, and what is magically happening underneath that cracked surface, I would only recommend one private tour, and that's Kilauea EcoGuides. Thank you, Erik and Malia!

Aloha akh78 and thank you for the review of your private tour of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! All of our guides are always happy and excited to answer any question our guests have, as well as making our explorations with families fun and educational for everyone in the party. We also enjoy sharing the connection between the fascinating science behind the volcano paired with the equally important cultural dynamics. Mahalo for your recommendation, we appreciate it very much!

We signed up for the 5-6 hour trip and had the pleasure of meeting Erik, the owner and lead guide. He was very personable and knowledgeable and gave us a great tour! Being a lifelong resident of Hawai’i as well as an experienced geologist and volcanologist, Erik is uniquely qualified to teach others about the volcanoes, Hawaiian culture, and what it’s like to live in Hawai’i.
We asked him a barrage of questions all day and he always answered with a smile - he truly enjoys teaching others about Hawai’i. After the tour was over he even emailed us a list of recommendations for restaurants, beaches, hikes and other activities.
We were a family of three and really enjoyed getting Erik’s undivided attention. I have no doubt we had a much better experience than we would have had either just going through the park on our own or with a larger tour. We got the benefit of focusing our time on the best areas without being surrounded by dozens of other people.
Erik really tailored the trip and the information towards our interests and provided the perfect overview of the volcanoes, geology, and Hawaiian history/culture, diving deeper into areas when we asked questions. Even our teenager who wasn’t initially all that interested started asking questions and enjoyed speaking with Erik.
We spent most of the tour out walking the trails while Erik educated us and spent very little time in the car driving between the different locations. I would guess your bang for your buck is much higher with this tour than with any others where they bus you around. The tour is distilled down to what is important rather than wandering through gift shops and tourist traps.
We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone interested in a more personalized, exceptional experience. If you want to support a locally owned and operated small business while simultaneously getting the best experience, this is the right tour. Book it - you won’t be disappointed!

olcanoes National Park is a special place ... and it was made more special by Jay! What an amazing experience to be educated AND entertained by a true expert. That expertise, by the way, comes from him having been a career Park Ranger, with his last assignment at this very park! Just a wonderful bonus. Jay met us at 5.15 AM and walked with us to the viewing area for the erupting Halemaumau crater. Along the way he provided us detailed yet understandable information about the geology and topography of the locale. After the volcano, Jay introduced us to the vast world of Hawai'i's unique botany at the crater near the Thurston Lava Tube, again receiving a lot of information and insight to the history of the place. We ended up with a visit to the Bird Park outside the national park, and were lucky enough to see a red-tailed hawk (called an Io) wheeling above is with its distinctive cry. Jay enlivened our learning with pictures and even a couple of specially crafted leis he had made himself. Finally, we truly appreciated Jay's commitment to respecting Hawaiian culture. He chanted special incantations before coming to the volcano and the lava tube, as per local tradition where we ask the gods to "come to us" (my poor translation). All in all an excellent morning spent in the company of a true master. Thank you Jay!

Aloha RPKumar and thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your private tour with Jay! While most of our tours are conducted during the day, we are always happy to do our best to accommodate requests to explore the volcano at sunrise or sunset. All of our guides have a deep connection to this place and the cultural dynamics of the area are very important to us. The fact that Jay was able to show you that connection is great to hear, mahalo for your recommendation!

Outstanding private tour! We can't say enough about this experience. Erik was our guide for the 4 of us. We did a 10:00 am tour on Mar 31. He is so knowledgeable about the park, volcano, geology, flora and the culture of the Hawaiian people. The views of Kiluea and the lava tube were amazing. The walk was not difficult at all. Erik answered all our questions. When the tour was over, Erik gave us suggestions on what else to do in the park and places to eat in Volcano. This way we were able to spend the remainder of the day in the area so as to see sunset over Kiluea's lava lake.

Aloha Patty O! Thank you very much for your review. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your private tour of Kilauea Volcano and found that the walking portion of the tour was good for you and your group. All of our private tours are customized to each guests specific abilities, and the majority of the walks we take inside the National Park are moderate with no major elevation gain or loss. And we are always happy to make recommendations outside of the tour, especially local restaurants! We appreciate your recommendation very much, mahalo!

Super magical experience, a must do when visiting the volcanoes. Our private tour guide (Jay) was unbelievable, extremely knowledgeable, friendly, funny and also very conscious of Hawaiian traditions. Jay went above and beyond all of our expectations that we had hoped for in this tour. I would definitely recommend the private tour as it is a more personalized experience. My teenage girls also loved Jay and the volcanoes, he was able to keep them entertained and interested the entire time. We even managed to see lava, a bucket item accomplished. And amazing to see beauty within the rock. Definitely one of our best experiences on our 10 day trip to the islands of Hawaii. Mahalo nui loa.

Aloha Rachael A and thank you for your review! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your private tour of the worlds most active volcano. While seeing lava at the current summit eruption is always a priority for our explorations, we do take pride in conducting our tours in a way that is conscious and respectful of native Hawaiian traditions and beliefs. The fact that your private tour was one of the best experiences for your stay here to big island means a lot to us, mahalo for your recommendation!

This was absolutely the best guided tour I have had. Erik was extremely knowledgeable, and he enthusiastically answered all the questions we threw at him about the Hawaiian geology, culture, and history. If you’re wondering if it’s worth paying a little more for the private tour experience instead of an impersonal bus tour, the answer is 100% yes!

My fiancé and I did a private tour with Jay Robinson yesterday (Nov 22, 2022) and we have been in awe ever since. Jay called us a day before to iron out all details and logistics (what to bring, timing, where to meet, etc). Even more impressive than his knowledge of geography is his knowledge of Hawaiian history and tradition. He performed an incredible Hawaiian chant/prayer before entering a lava tube and often gave us queues of good things to record or take photos of. You can tell he’s done this tour many times but his passion and excitement made us feel like we were his first tour - it truly made us feel special and welcome.

There are some National parks that I feel comfortable navigating on my own but my knowledge of volcanoes is negligible so we decided to use Kilauea Eco Guides. We did the 6 hour private tour which is expensive but if you are flying from the continental US to see this National Park, it felt necessary to understand what we were seeing. Jay was our guide who spent 20 years as a park ranger in Volcano National Park. He wrote the park guide. Needless to say we learned a lot and took away much more from the tour than had we done the park on our own. He is very knowledgeable about all things volcano but also about the Hawaiian culture and flora and fauna of the area. He is very passionate about the park. He was just as excited to see the current eruption as we were. We really could not have asked for a better guide. Highly recommend using this tour company ! Only side note: Jay did share a granola bar with us but you may want to bring your own snacks !

Aloha Rhonda A and thank you for your review! While it is true you can always explore the National Park on your own we feel very strongly that our professional guides enhance the exploration with education interpretation. And with Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park being so massive our guides are able to show visitors the best that the volcano has to offer. Jay is truly an expert on Kilauea and we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your private tour with him, mahalo for your recommendation!

My family and I had Erik as our tour guide for the 6-hour private eco tour. This experience far surpassed my expectations and Erik was an exceptional guide. He was very passionate about teaching volcano details and science to us. Very informative and interesting for all of us. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime experience this would be it and I highly recommend the 6 hour tour. Erik was also very helpful in other recommendations on all islands including tours, restaurants and hikes. I am now following the facebook page so I can continue to learn about volcanos. Great learning experience for my family and I.

Ever since I read about this tour a couple of years ago I've wanted to take it, and it looks as though I'll be staying at Volcano House between 11-13 May 2020 for my 50th birthday. However, I notice the tour is not designed for solo travellers.
As this is probably the only chance in this lifetime that I'll get to take it, if anyone is taking this tour between these dates could you please let me know so we can discuss the possibility of me joining your party? I'll bring Haribo.

Is there anyone who's interested in this tour but only has one person?
I'm a solo traveler and will go to the park on 2019/12/17 ~ 2019/12/18. Since this tour only accepts two people and above, if there's anyone that happened to be there at that time and can attend this tour with me, I would appreciate it very much.

Hi - Di you have experience with 6 year old boys? We are heading to Kona end of month with another couple so in total their will be 4 adults and 2 six year old boys? How do they do in these 6 hour tours? Do you recommend for that age range? Will we be able to see lava at night? I heard it’s beautiful... -V.

Oh I'm so sorry, I just saw your message now... I guess you've now taken the tour. It's absolutely fine for 6-year-olds, wasn't it? And I don't think there was lava showing when you went :(

We are coming in on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship on September 27th. Does your tour group provide transportation to the park from the Kaulia-Kona port?
