Rafting (and bouldering and swimming) on the Beautiful Rio Cangrejal
We have done lots of river rafting in the states and even in other countries like Fiji before. This experience was also wonderful but a little different than we expected. So just a little heads up. We went in August. They picked us up at our hotel at The Lodge and Spa at Pico Bonito in a very old pickup, and it was a fairly long drive. Our driver was delightful. We spent the first half of the morning swimming in the river and kind of climbing on rocks and bouldering and cliff jumping. The scenery is very beautiful, but I guess I just hadn't expected that part of the adventure. Then we rafted down the river. The air was pretty hot but the water was refreshing. I don't know if the river was too high or too low, but the rafting part of the morning was probably only about an hour or an hour and a half long. That part of it was probably a little shorter than I expected, but very fun. Several of the rapids were amazing. A few times we had to get out and go around on land where it wasn't safe to stay in our raft on the river. I thought they said that they were going to take some pictures of us, but maybe I misunderstood, because there were definitely no pictures, which was sad because we would have liked some. If we had it to do again, we would have brought our own GoPro. Our guides were lovely and very skilled and their English was great. We felt very safe.

      Copan ruins
If you want to go into tunnel buy ticket at entrance. Met two people who walked thru. I tried and a guy Came up asking for 20USD. It's only 40 lympias at booth. The site is doable in a couple of hours. Don't really need guide unless you are a full on history buff. Well worth a visit. Some really good protected stone images

      Don’t do it.
There was not a seat for me to view. I was ready to climb down and there wasn’t a place for me to go after the stairs. I ended up sitting above board on deck and the tour guide squeezed inside to sit on the stairs. I feel there had been confusion, because we were left waiting without seating while the boat(s) came and went. Finally, the moment came to see underwater reef and animals/plants, but I didn’t have a place to sit or stand in the hull. Please don’t waste your money and time on this excursion. I booked it from my NCL cruise and had expected a great experience. I was so disappointed in the excursion AND the NCL excursion desk not believing me. So don’t think (like I did) that it’s a great experience just because you book through your cruise boat…. Ugh

The most detailed of Mayan ruins
I went to a few ruins during my time in Central America, but this was by far the best in terms of the level of detail. It was really interesting seeing all the Mayan art, particularly the hieroglyphic staircase. Also, you get a panoramic view of the ruins that feature on the Honduras Bank note. It was also cool seeing lots of macaws.

      Well worth a visit
Copan Ruins also known as Copan archaeology site is well worth a visit. I never tire of ruins, whether Aztec, Inca or Mayan. Our guide for the morning was the very knowledgeable Rex who has to be 65 but loves his job. What he doesn’t know about this site isn’t worth knowing. For 30 years as a guide, he knows how to capture a groups attention with stats, figures, anecdotes, humour and even a little musical jig (he’s also a musician). The site isn’t as large as others I’ve visited but certainly well worth visit. Allow 2 hours to explore. At the entrance there are a couple of shops for touristy trinkets or refreshments. Toilets are located here as well. Also here is a 3D map of the site showing the scope and extent of the structures. Built between 706 and 756 AD, it’s an impressive. The British researched the site around 1890 and today there are efforts to restore certain sections. The macaws that fly around the area are certainly eye catching but like cockatoos, they can get a bit mangy with feathers dropping out and mites attacking their skin. There are a few places where food is put out for them to feed on, which is nice as a tourist but I wonder if they become reliant on this handout. Well worth having a guide here and understand the history and daily machinations of the community, how they

      Really nice day out.
Great visit, there's a tractor ride up the hill and a gentle walk down. Lunch was delicious mixture of Honduran food, with wonderful service. The guide was passionate on the subject of coffee which was totally infectious.

      Colorful display of murals
A little walking is required to see all the many locally painted mural on the walls of residences and shops around the town. Cobbled streets. Went there on a Monday, so very few tourists. The plaza is a local hangout with little vendor stalls. At the plaza square is where you will find a few vendors selling local wines and chichi, a fermented fruit drink.

      Experience of a lifetime
I can’t even express the amazing time we had here. An encounter with hugs and kisses and an awesome snorkeling experience with the dolphins. The staff obviously cared deeply for the animals and made the experience one I will never forget.

      Morning Visit
Visited here in the morning when they first open (08:00) and spent a couple hours with an onsite guide to learn about all the various plants, animals and fruits. Truly fascinating place and highly recommend you include this in your visit to Tela/La Ceiba.

      Great experience and servide
Great view of the reef and marine life. A narration would have been nice. We were picked up outside the cruise dock and had transportation for the day. Our driver, Henry, was very gracious and took us to sites we were interested in.
