About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Q270JQinesr0 contributionsShuttle servicesThe shuttles are always late and never apologize. The drivers are nice but if you are on a hurry or have little time to see places I would´t trust their schedules.Written November 25, 2024
- timbW9546YA0 contributionsPerfect ride from Xela to San PedroIt was great. It was easy to buy online, and the price was the same as if I'd paid cash in town. They had a seat when my school's guy was full. My driver was great, and he showed up at my hotel on time. There were two other passengers in a small SUV, and we chatted all the way about what we saw on the road, politics, whatever. Strong recommendation.Written August 15, 2024
- Discover001046260550 contributionsGreat ServiceI used Monte Verde Tours to book a shuttle. The price was extremely fair. I called the owner, Josh, on WhatsApp. He speaks perfect English. He is a native English speaker. He was extremely generous with help and advice. Thank YouWritten August 6, 2024
- P1365ONwilliamc0 contributionsAbandoned at the borderThey have left us stranded at the border for hours not letting us move on even when there is space on the buses to do so. We also asked about what forms we would need beforehand and were told the wrong informationWritten April 1, 2024
- Lisa F0 contributionsFantastic 3-day hike from Xela to Lake AtitlánWe loved our 3-day hike to Lake Atitlán with Monte Verde Tours! Our guides Rudi and José were great and knowledgeable. The route is absolutely beautiful, even though the hike is indeed quite hard. Especially on the first day, you will walk for around 20 km with many ups and downs, especially a very long descend that is hard on your legs and knees. But all is definitely worth it and the guides were great in keeping everyone’s spirit high and providing breaks where needed. The homestays with local families along the way provided a great opportunity to learn more about the culture and you can see how local people in rural areas live. If you know a little bit of Spanish, it is easy to talk to the families and for a small fee you will have the opportunity to use a traditional temazcal sauna to freshen up after a long day of hiking. The food provided by Monte Verde was simple but good. We chose the veggie option and had sandwiches for lunch and our guides cooked pasta for dinner on the first day. Breakfast was granola, yoghurt and banana on the second day. Lunch and dinner were provided by the second host family (homemade tortillas!). And again yoghurt and fruits for breakfast overlooking Lake Atitlán on the third day. The 3-day hike to Lake Atitlán was definitely one of the highlights of our Guatemala trip! Also, it was a great preparation for the Acatenango hike that we did after resting for a couple of days at the lake. We had a good experience with Monte Verde Tours as the organizing agency. Communication was easy via WhatsApp and you will meet for a short stop at their office before the hike starts. At the office you can store your luggage (that you don’t want to carry) and get equipment from them, such as backpacks if needed. You can fill up your water bottles here, too. Our guides told us that they are very happy to work for Monte Verde as the company provides a good and secure job for them. Also, Monte Verde is involved in community projects such as supporting local schools.Written March 17, 2024
- jonU1405HI0 contributionsOne of our highlights in GuatemalaWe had the greatest experience with this agency. We did the 3-day-hike from Xela to lake atitlan. Our guides were super kind and were very open to talk to. The hike itself is amazing (and allegedly a little harder and nicer but shorter in comparison to other agencies). The nature, the views and the route was lovely. We had lunch and overnight-stays at local families. This was so great since you really could see how the locals live which, as a backpacker, sometimes is not that easy. We could use their temazcals as well, such a great feeling after an intense hiking day. They do their tours starting every day if there are 2 or more people so if youre lucky as we were you will have a very small group were you can really get to know your companions and your guide what makes you enjoy your whole hike even more. The money you pay really goes to the guides and the families what was very important to us, since they work a lot and are always grateful. I can absolutely recommend this tour and agency.Written March 17, 2024
- delia11090 contributionsTerrible Tajumulco experience and extremely unprofessional guideI had a pretty awful experience. I did a one-day Tajumulco hike with a tour guide called Alex. From the get-go, I sensed that something was very off. The guide did not want to be there at all, looked like he was ready to go home ,and did not speak a single word during the entire tour (and when we asked a question, he would mince a one-word answer). He looked like he needed to be somewhere at the end of the day, and rushed the entire hike. We had to force him to take breaks, and he seemed pretty impatient whenever we wanted to stop. Also when hiking, he never turned around to check on the group, and I don't think he would have noticed at all EVEN IF I HAD FALLEN OF THE CLIFF. All in all, a very, very terrible experience. Moreover, the one-day Tajumulco tour is very expensive - it is at the same price point as the two-day hike, with no food/gear/anything provided. The only thing you're really getting is private transportation to the trailhead. The guide is supremely bad, and I wish I'd done the hike on my own since the trail is very clearly marked anyways. I do not recommend this company or the tour at all.Written March 13, 2024
- Leigh_Whitworth0 contributionsGreat local company.Absolutely great experience .. again. I’ve used Monte Verde Tours and Josh for many years and never been disappointed. Josh arranged for a tent, cooking equipment and food to be taken to the summit of Volcan Santa Maria and along with a guide we spent the sunset and sunrise there. The views were astonishing and worth the hard work of the hike. Transport was also included along with a sleeping bag rental, roll mat, backpack and poles. Terrific adventure. Thanks Josh.Written February 3, 2024
- NYAnatolia0 contributionsPrompt, reliable, and friendly serviceBooking a shuttle Xela-Antigua on-line was quick and easy. The agency sent me several reminders about pick up, one of which mentioned that a change of vehicle may be necessary for my trip. Exactly on-time the driver picked me up from Xela hotel in a car and we drove about an hour to some service area on the highway where we met the shuttle. The car driver Bryan was polite and friendly and he made sure I safely transferred to the shuttle. This shuttle wasn't door-to-door, it dropped all passengers near Iglesia de La Merced in Antigua. The whole drive was pleasant, and I am sincerely grateful to Monte Verde.Written September 29, 2023
- jpguyer0 contributionsExcellent Resource for A Shuttle to other Cities.I used Monte Verde for a shuttle from Xela to Lake Atitlan. MOnte VIsta was referred to me by serval different people. The shuttle price was very reasonable and they have a great website you can book online. The company followed up by calling and text messaging to keep me updated on the pickup time and location. The drive was extremely polite, efficient, and safe and the shuttle van was clean.Written May 18, 2023
- LibbyS0120 contributionsMonte Verde- Smooth RideI hired Monte Verde Tours to handle many of our shuttles in and around Guatemala while on our visit this past week and they were absolutely superb. Our schedule changed a few times due to weather/plans etc, and they were incredibly flexible with our requests for updating times of pickups. They were also ALWAYS on time which is unheard of today, I feel like. Lastly, we booked a tour to the hot springs with them which was perfect. Thanks so much to Monte Verde for making our trip such a smooth success!Written March 2, 2023
- alpine3650 contributionsExcellent transportation to or fron XelaJosh at Monte Verde is so incredibly responsive and helpful. We used him for booking transportation and each trip was punctual, drivers courteous and good value if you want private or shared shuttle. Highly recommendedWritten February 16, 2023

- bksmith20100 contributionsEasy to work with and great serviceI have used Monte Verde Tours before and I'm happy to give them another great review. It was easy to make reservations, they were on time and reliable, the drivers are consistently professional and the service is great. We had a glitch on our way from Quetzaltenango to Guatemala City that left one of the passengers in a real dilemma to catch her flight and they adapted their usual schedule and got her to the airport. Definitely will use this company again!Written August 20, 2022
- caio8520 contributions3 day trek Xela to Lake AtitlanDid the 3 day hike Xela to Lake Atitlan. The whole experience was amazing. Josh was very good in communicating via email prior to start , and our guide Rudy is the best. Don't usually do reviews but felt I needed for this because I had such a great time. The second day of the hike is quite tough but its worth it. The views and remoteness of some parts are incredible, and seeing indegenious Guatemalan villages in the hills is interesting, including one where we had lunch and our host spoke only Tzotzil. Rudy our guide was always willing to translate and ask any questions we had or subjects we were interested in about indegena culture and life in Guatemala. Great trip, highly recomend.Written July 15, 2022

You’re basically paying for transport and entrance fees. No “extras” beyond that. When we traveled the price of this bundled tour was roughly what we would have paid if we had organized ourselves.
The pools themselves were roughly swimming pool temperature. The water is hot coming in but the pools are large so the heat quickly dissipates.
They’re working on a new restaurant that looks pretty nice. Average changing rooms/toilets for this type of thing (yes, dirty/moldy, but you’ll survive). There are lockers for 15Q.
Overall worth a visit if you have some extra time in Xela. I wouldn’t recommend if this means a major detour or staying an extra day.

We loved our trip here! The staff at Monte Verde were so friendly. The driver spoke English and even pointed out places along the way to the hot springs.
Once at the hot springs, I really do recommend the "secret" pools. They cost 25Q to go to, but it's so incredibly worth it. We went on Monday morning and had the entire place to ourselves for nearly 2 hours. I'd recommend this to everyone who goes to/near Xela.

David, our tour guide, was great. He was very knowledgable about the area and gave us some recommendations while driving us through the beautiful mountains in route to the hot springs. The sights are amazing, mini-geysers, vegetable plantations showing up next to the road, the closeby river and its waterfall, the hot springs themselves, everything was top-notch. Beware that the weather is very cold, so you should be very careful when exiting the hot springs to avoid catching a cold.

We had a car just for ourselves, and were all alone in the springs on a Monday morning : so nice !
The driver took us at 9am at our hotel and we arrived at 9.40, and he took us back a 1pm so we had all time to try all the pools and eat :)

The staff of the tour are very friendly, they meet the indicated schedule. The place is very quiet, very good experience. It is very relaxing to spend a couple of hours in the hot springs.
