        Great Day Trip to Tikal
Prior to arriving in San Ignacio I booked a day trip to Tikal with Maya Walks. Sent an inquiry via email on a Sunday and they were very fast to respond with some options. After further quick correspondence the trip was reserved and paid for. Inquiry to booking within an hour. I stopped in their office in San Ignacio on Burns Street upon arrival and the staff were just as friendly and helpful in person as they are via email. The Tikal tour was perfect and went off without a hitch. A total of eight on the tour. A van collected everyone at their lodging, took us to the border, and walked us through the crossing and exchanging some money. Reggie picked us up on the other side and was to be our tour guide for the day. Along with the driver, Walter. The Tikal park is large and does involve a lot of walking, but we were never rushed and given ample opportunity to explore on our own before moving on to another section. Never rushed. The tour then stops for lunch (included) on its way back to the border. In total it's a near ten hour day, but well worth it.

        ABI IS THE BEST
Abi made my husband and I's honeymoon one to remember. He took us zip lining and cave tubing, which were incredible experiences. However his passion for birding and knowledge of Mayan/Belize history was what really what made the trip memorable. Abi told us so much about the birds and jungle around us that we started keeping an eye out for more in the canopy than we would've normally noticed. He was so incredible we booked him for a second day to see Caracol. Can't recommend Abi enough is an absolute gem who goes above and beyond.

        Excellent tour!
All the reviews are right - this trip is very well organized and our guide, Reggie, was fabulous. The tour of the site was excellent and he spotted two species of toucans, howler and spider monkeys and several other birds that really rounded out the trip for us. It was also crazy hot and humid and he did a really great job making sure we were hydrated and feeling ok. Highly recommend!

A full day of refreshing water and relaxation!
Our tour guide taught us so much about Belize, the pine forest, and Mayan culture. We visited Big Rock and Rio Frio Cave before taking a short lunch break at a breathtaking overlook. Lunch was delicious with chicken, rice, beans, coleslaw, and a sweet treat. They even offered us seconds! We then went to Rio on Pools to relax and sit under the waterfalls for a gentle massage. Our guide made sure we stayed safe the whole time and advised us on spots to avoid since the current and flow of the waterfall can be super strong at certain points. I had an amazing time and it was a great tour for relaxation since the driver took us to each spot and hiking was pretty easy/short except for some steeper stair spots.

        Easy to get to
We had already visited several other ruins. What made this different was you could actually go inside some of the ruins. Gives a person more perspective of size etc. it was somewhat smaller, meaning only what has been excavated

Review of one day tour to Tikal from San Ignatio
We agree with the last review. We enjoyed this full day trip to the Tikal Mayan Ruins and thoroughly appreciated the time there. We had an excellent guide to teach us about the amazing society that existed 1700 years ago. The temples are spectacular! One day is enough for this tour but if you could stay in the area and experience the jungle at night and solitude in the early morning, I think that would be very nice!

        Fun outing
We did the 1/2 day tubing + zipline experience. Jason was our great guide, never getting stressed by the chaos that was a holiday weekend. It was a fun day. Glad we did it.

        Cave tubing was so cool
The cave tubing was awesome. Josh was our guide and he was knowledgeable, funny, and made sure everyone was comfortable. I had scheduled a full day tour with combo cave tubing and zipline but Mayawalk hadn’t relayed that info to Josh so we were unable to go zip lining but Josh was very accommodating when we realized

        Great destinations!
The destinations were great! Caracol was not busy, the Rio Frio Cave was beautiful, and Rio on Pools was fun and refreshing! My only issue was that we contacted the tour company twice with dietary restriction information, and they said they could accommodate us. The allotment of food one of us could eat because of the food restrictions for lunch was the equivalent of 75 calories.

Our driver James and our tour guide Hector were both incredible towards making this trip safe and fun. James drove us there safely over some pretty rough road and Hector was informative and entertaining while explaining all of the different parts of the cave. My understanding is that MayaWalk has been doing this tour since tours were allowed around 20 years ago so you know you’re in good hands. Our guide, Hector, said this was his 2,900+ tour into that cave.

I also want to shout out to Chelsea for taking such good care of things on the admin side. She was lovely and well organized making planning and purchasing this excursion a breeze.

I was admittedly nervous about this excursion since I’m not an outdoorsy person but everything turned out fine and I’m glad I pushed myself to do it. James and Hector were also great about quelling any fears I had and making sure I was comfortable.

The cave itself is incredible and you spend most of the time wading through a crystal clear stream before climbing into the ceremonial chambers. I purchased waterproof hiking boots just for this adventure and I’m glad I did since there are tons of rocks and pebbles throughout. There is a section where socks but no shoes are required and I recommend wearing thick socks since you will be stepping on rough stones for part of it.

I was nervous about the hike to the cave entrance but it’s a cleared pathway with tons of tree cover so it was probably the easiest part of the trip. The first of three times you cross the river it was neck high for me (I’m 5’ 2”) but it was still and clear so I was able to hop my way across without issue. The other two crossings the water hit my mid-calf.

Something I wasn’t quite aware of beforehand is that you are expected to leave all of your belongings in the vehicle before making the 45 minute hike to the cave. The only thing you carry is your life vest (if needed) and a water bottle NO CAMERAS OR PHONES. Once you get to the cave, you leave your water bottle near the entrance, put on your helmet, then you’re off. If you have a snack or any important medications, you can give them to the tour guide who will have a dry bag with them throughout.

Overall, this cave experience is exactly what you think it is in terms of being a once in a lifetime excursion you should absolutely take (if you’re physically up to it) when visiting Belize.

Also, the lunch afterwards was delicious! And definitely well earned after such a strenuous adventure. In short, just do it!

I almost don’t want to write a review for this place because I don’t want the ATM cave to become even busier then what it already is, but our tour was that good .. especially our tour guide Hue..he is the perfect example of a person that loves his job and loves what he does.. you can see it on his face and the way he talks about it.. his knowledge of the Mayan culture and this cave was amazing.. we started with a drive from San Ignacio towards the cave (we had our own car and just followed the van) early in the morning . When we got to the site, everything stays:your phone your backpack your CAMERA(S) everything.. they provide the helmets, the vests, the lights so you won’t have to worry about anything .. and then from there was pure WOW.. Hue was funny, considerate of each member of the group and helpful, answered all questions and made the tour memorable!! After you finish and get back to the car, you even get a nice meal and a rum punch!! What more can I say then: WE LOVED IT!!

This tour was outstanding! We booked with PAC-Z tours, which I would highly recommend. We followed the tour guide in our own car to the start of the hike. The picnic area has toilets and showers.

The hike itself was incredible! If you are used to hiking and in shape you will be fine on this tour. Unfortunately, we saw many people that were not physically fit to be on this tour and were not having a good time. We swam across rivers, swam to the entrance of the cave and since we had a fit group, we went through a couple off back slots that were neck deep with water. That was the best part! There is a 15ft ladder you need to climb to reach the end, plus scrambling up a rock formation and climbing up over a ledge to reach the area where the pottery and skeletons are. The last section involves hiking in your socks.

The only shoes you need are old tennis shoes and socks. DO NOT listen to any of those bloggers that are trying to make a buck by suggesting you need Merrells or some other expensive water shoe. Obviously, they have not done this hike. I wore workout leggings and a quick dry shirt.

Bring a snack bar and leave it at the picnic area at the cave entrance. You will be thankful you did.

      Unforgettable ATM caves tour!

We had the most wonderful and enjoyable tour with Mayawalk Tours yesterday. We can’t say enough about our guides, Eric Manzanero and Juan Carlos, who were professional, extremely knowledgeable, very personable and clearly love what they do. Eric made sure each and every person in our group was looked after and felt comfortable during the challenging sections of the tour.

The Mayawalk Tours cave includes roundtrip transportation from San Ignacio, all entrance fees, life jackets and helmets, a licensed local guide, a full lunch and delicious rum punch.

We thoroughly recommend MayaWalk Tours for anyone wanting to do the ATM Caves tour.

Our family was picked up from Black Rock Lodge and shuttled to the MayaWalk Tours facility in town where we joined the tour group. As cameras are not allowed our tour guide Hugh and the shuttle driver took some pictures and videos as we hiked the trail to the cave and shared these with us through WhatsApp. Hugh did a great job narrating and making sure everyone in the group was comfortable to meet the challenges faced on the way to the top of the cave system.

This tour should have been on our bucket list, but we didn’t know how incredible it would be. But now it is checked off (we added it on afterwards).

We did the tour with Eric from MayaWalk Tours who was so knowledgeable about the area and the history of the site. He was trained by National Geographic and his way of delivering the knowledge was so mesmerizing. And as he says “I love what I do, and I do what I love”. This shows in all he does. He answered so many questions and showed us different ways through the caves, while keeping us laughing and in awe of the stalactites and stalagmites (they might make it to top will always remind me they are at the bottom growing up).

Now about the tour, All I can say is you have to do it to ‘Belize’ it.

We booked our tour through Black Rock Lodge and couldn't have been happier! Hector was the guide for our small group, Hugh and Juan Carlos worked with other small groups. Hector was, without a doubt, the best guide for any experience that I've ever had. He was incredibly informative about Mayan culture and history, Belizean flora and fauna, and clearly loved sharing his knowledge with our group. He was able to connect with everyone from my almost 10 year old son to the academics in the group. He provided outstanding coaching through the tight/high/slippery bits of the cave system and never once did I worry about the safety of my son or any other group member. He also was willing to really slow the pace of the tour to keep us from bumping up against other groups.

ATM cave itself was breathtaking and exciting (beyond the sacrificial sites). It does require a willingness to get dirty and step outside your comfort zone, but I think most people with relatively decent fitness can do this tour. I do think that 9/10 is probably the youngest you would want to go on this trip due to both the content and conditions.

Lunch was great and the whole team told jokes on the bus back to San Ignacio. The trip leaders even let my son tell jokes on the bus! I also want to give a shoutout to Hugh who helped me to get my Keen sandals (a must on this tour) repaired after the sole detached while climbing. Hugh took my sandals to a guy who repairs them and then Kareem, one of the awesome drivers, brought them to me at Black Rock the next day. This company goes above and beyond!

We had an absolute blast doing this tour (and two others!) with Maya Walk during our time in Belize. Our tour guide was Juan Carlos and we LOVED our full day with him: super knowledgeable, fun, and engaging. He encouraged us to open up and ask questions, and we learned so much about Mayan religious and sociological history! We had an amazing time exploring the caves, scrambling up rocks, and admiring the rock formations, and we gobbled up the stew chicken lunch provided as soon as we got out. It was a great and intimate experience from start to finish, and we would highly highly highly recommend Maya Walk for all of your San Ignacio tours.

I did a ton of research and wound up booking two tours with Mayawalk, Cave tubing and the ATM tour. It's really the best tour company in Belize. They don't rush, the guides are knowledgeable, caring. Ben was our driver and he's amazing- kind, safe and skilled at driving a van or bus. He came with us Cave Tubing and held my mother's hand the whole walk to the cave as she hobbled along on a cane. Eric was our ATM guide and he took special care to make sure my mild claustrophobia was calm. He made my birthday incredibly special. They have the most experienced guides. You can't go wrong with Mayawalk for any tour.

Great tour! Hugh was an excellent tour guide because he was able to educate us and keep us safe on the tour. Also took the Caracoal and the airport shuttles to and from Ka'ana. I can say without a doubt, Mayawalk was always on-time, professional, and very kind. I felt very cared for during all of the tours and rides. Strongly recommend that you hire Mayawalk while you're in the San Ignacio area.

If it matters to you, the guides all wore masks....even in a cave!

On the ATM tour, I'd recommend that you bring a dry bag for your stuff and shoes that can handle water and dry out quickly. Don't bring a camera for cave portion of the tour. You'll find out why...

If you want super fast answers, make sure you use Whatsapp. They're really good with the customer service!
