    Great Time
We had an amazing tour today with Jason. He is an amazing guide and finds perfect balance between being sharing facts and being chilled and letting us enjoy the beauty of the cave/nature. This tour was very special and definitely recommend! Eric & Carly :)

Go slow Tour to the Maya Underworld
We were warmly welcomed by Giselle and Michael who picked us up for this trip. The trip in to the cave is very easy, just a bit of canoe paddling and you are surrounded by complete darkness only your headlamps enlighten the fascinating world of stalactites and formations.

Misleading tour information but actual experience was great.
The tour was fantastic, that was for sure. I put 3 stars because it was misleading. The tour was through St Leonards Tours which are fantastic, but all my communication was through MayaWalk which seemed to have nothing to do with the tour other than being the middle man. St Leonards a fantastic tour business and it’s a shame they aren’t mentioned at all when booking. Will go directly through St Leonards next time instead of through the middle man.

Eddy is the best for tubing!
Our guide, Eddy made us discover the cave by tube but also by foot. He took the time to make photos of us, as he took a lot of time to 'feel' the cave (no light, only darkness and the sound of water). Great experience. Very informative, relaxing and in nature! The lunch was rather poor, it was in a restaurant. As we ordered vegetarian, it was only rice with some cold vegetables and a coke. One day later we did ATM as wel. If you have to choose (and you have reasonable physical condition), you better choose ATM.

    Caracol, more like Cara-cool 😎
Our second excursion of our trip with MayaWalk was the Caracol Ruins. Our guide was Damian and we were the only ones scheduled for the tour that day making for an intimate and very private experience. Damian is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the Mayan history, plants and animals of the area. He was very courteous and picked up quickly on what we were interested in and focused attention to those details. We shared personal stories and really connected on our tour. It was an amazing day and the tour is not only about the ruins, but also a stop at a cave and natural river fed pools. The lunch was amazing, fresh and homemade. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour or guide. Thank you so much!

    Great tour & excellent guide
Amazing adventure. It was beautiful and our guide, Gissell, was incredibly knowledgeable both with the Maya culture and plants& animals. She pointed out three tucans and a tyron. Best tour we did by far. PS We felt safe the whole time as 2 females

Fantastic day out with Jason our guide. Started the day at Xunantunich Archeological Site early and gained alot if knowledge from Jason. He is very experienced and patient. Afterwards we drove to Barton Creek and enjoyed a canoe ride inside the cave. Was amazing with the structure of the cave, the absolute quietness as we were the only ones and evidence of Mayan life. We also dropped by the butterfly farm, they are breeding butterflies due to their existence being threatened. Fantastic day out, highly recommend

    Rise above the canopy.
Most impressive of all the Mayan sites. Tikal is unparalleled due to its massive size and scope. The ability to walk within and climb atop the ancient runes made this a day well worth taking. The guide provided was very knowledgeable and added tons of value to the trip.

Cool day filled with rest and learning.
It was our second trip with MayaWalk and we were again pleasantly surprised. It was just two of us interested in the tour on the day and the company organised a more or less private tour for just us. We got a full and professional attention of the guide. He was very knowledgeable about local nature and history and well prepared for the tour. He showed us burning copal and homemade rubber ball for the Maya Ball game, pictures of 3D reconstructions of Caracol and the diagrams of mayan observatory. On the way back we stopped at Rio On Pool where we took ages and our guide patiently waited, probably overtime :) Excellent experience, highly recommended, 10/10. Thank you.

A day of culture and wonder
A standout tour amongst many amazing adventures we had in Belize. If you only have time to do one trip to see the many wonderful Mayan ruins in Belize, then I recommend going to Caracol with Maya Walk Tours. Its a full day tour, staring early with a long drive along the Macal River to Caracol, stopping for a brief stretch near the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve. We didn’t see any Jaguar but we were amazed by the size and construction of the city of Caracol. We got to climb up the vast Castile to see the whole area with tombs and living spaces, recreational places and the special structure where the Mayan’s were able to track the movement of the sun and stars with astonishing accuracy. Our guide, Enselmo was super knowledgeable, sharing plenty of stories and facts about this fascinating culture and how they lived so many years ago. We saw some Howler Monkeys and Enselmo pointed out all of the interesting trees that local people have been using since the Mayan times. We felt honored to have experienced this wonderful place. Karim kindly served us a delicious lunch with tasty punch, after-which he drove us to the delightfully cool Rio Frio Cave followed by a welcome stop at the refreshing Rio on pools. This is a local natural watering hole with mini falls and large natural pools to relax in after an enriching day. We highly recommend this tour!

A Serene experience with a Great Tour company
We did a few tours during a 7 day stay in the Cayo area and Maya Walk Tours is definitely the company to choose! They handle all of the pre-trip organisation on Viator well, their guides are knowledgeable and their rides are comfortable. You can arrange local pick-up or meet them at their shop in central San Ignacio, and if you are driving, there is affordable day parking in a lot just down that same street. For this trip we went to the beautiful and serene Barton creek caves with our guide Abby and driver Karim. Abby had many interesting stories and shared plenty of facts from archeological research about Mayan culture and their uses of the cave, we really appreciated his paddling too. The cave is stunning with amazing stalactite formations. Go see it for yourself to really appreciate the beauty! Afterward we went to the Mariposa butterfly farm where we first enjoyed a delicious local lunch with tasty rum punch and then we got to experience the butterflies with their guides (reviewed separately). The rides are scenic and both Abby and Karim are super friendly so we enjoyed the day. We even got to stop to buy litchi’s which are always a tasty treat!

Our guide Jason was the man! He was so well informed and great at communicating local culture and history. Caracol was such a treasure and it really must be seen with a guide. 10/10 recommend.

    Unplanned highlight of trip
Definitely the highlight of my trip! I was visiting Belize and wasn't planning on going anywhere else, but fortunately my guide was from Guatamala and encouraged us to take this tour. ABSOLUTELY worth the price. Every detail was accounted for, border crossing was simple, Tikal is incredible, and our guide Eduardo was wonderful, respectful, accommodating, knowledgeable, and professional. It definitely was hot, so take advantage of the breaks to buy a gatorade. I found climbing some of the structures here to be doable because of wooden stairs built along side the pyramids. Don't come to the area and skip this one.

This was a highlight of our entire Belize trip, it was an amazing experience and we felt lucky to be able to do it!

First, the employees were all great from the driver (who helped serve lunch as well) to our guide (Jamir) and the office staff. Our drive out and back from the site were as smooth as you can ask for on those bumpy roads and also we received a history lesson (though it was very tough to hear for those of us sitting in the back by the wheels and AC). Our guide, Jamir (Jam Jam) was awesome, super knowledgeable and personable and safety oriented. We were one of the first groups into the cave that day and that was a huge plus, we didn't experience crowding until we were turning around basically. Jamir gave us an amazing presentation on the history, nature & archaeology of the Maya and the ATM cave, we learned so much. inside the cave, we felt safe and well led. The experience inside was very cool- beautiful, adventurous, full of history and fun, it is a definite must do in our book.

Coming out and then having a delicious lunch was a perfect end. Staff were attentive and friendly and made sure we had what we needed. We had few negatives from the entire day- well worth the money!

We booked several trips with Mayawalk and first thing you need to know is that everything was fine.
Pick up and dropp off were punctual, the tours were not too crowded.

Anyway also compared with other tour operators, there's still room for improvement.
We visited Caracol and the guide was not so inspired, he left us behind several times and we realized how much info he didn't know or shared about mayan culture after we visited Tikal and Xunantunich.

The Mayawalk guide we had for the ATM cave was much more prepared and enthusiastic and that's the kind of guide you want.

Also we understand that the food is pretty standard but for 3 trips in 3 days we had the same exact meal (stewed chicken, Rice & beans)

So again I would definitely recommend Mayawalk as a tour operator but for the price paid is legit to expect a little more.

Hello and thank you for choosing Mayawalk Tours. I apologize for your experience and we will most definitely improve by the next time you return. I am glad you would still recommend us and to touch on what you said, there is room for improvement. There is always room for improvement. We are trying to figure out a way for our system to assist us in ensuring the lunch is prepared accordingly and guests doing multiple tours can have something different each day. Can you please let us know the name of your tour guide so we can review this situation and provide training appropriately? Thank you once more for choosing us cheers and safe travels, Samantha & Mayawalk Team

My boyfriend and I are in our 20’s and really wanted to do the ATM Cave Tour. It was about a 45 minute walk through rivers and jungle to the cave. There we swam to the entrance and started our descend. Climbing over rocks, swimming through columns - it was cool!! We had Eric as our guide. He took his time to show us stalactites and stalagmites, and the history of the cave. He even showed us different paths for us to take which were more adventurous. He made sure we were safe. He took a lot of time to explain the artifacts and the Mayan gods they worshipped when they were in the caves and the reasonings behind why things were the way they were. There were lots of tour groups coming in after us and leaving the cave before us! Eric ensured that our tour was not just a quick walk through but informational. He was a great tour guide!

MayaWalk did an amazing job educating us about the ATM cave tour as well as keeping us safe and confident to do the trek. This is not for the faint of heart or the “couch potato.” There is climbing, swimming, and physical exertion. This should not deter you from doing this tour. It makes you feel accomplished but be warned that it is not a walk in the park (3 hours in the cave itself, one way in and one way out - no stairs or shortcuts).

Our driver James and our tour guide Hector were both incredible towards making this trip safe and fun. James drove us there safely over some pretty rough road and Hector was informative and entertaining while explaining all of the different parts of the cave. My understanding is that MayaWalk has been doing this tour since tours were allowed around 20 years ago so you know you’re in good hands. Our guide, Hector, said this was his 2,900+ tour into that cave.

I also want to shout out to Chelsea for taking such good care of things on the admin side. She was lovely and well organized making planning and purchasing this excursion a breeze.

I was admittedly nervous about this excursion since I’m not an outdoorsy person but everything turned out fine and I’m glad I pushed myself to do it. James and Hector were also great about quelling any fears I had and making sure I was comfortable.

The cave itself is incredible and you spend most of the time wading through a crystal clear stream before climbing into the ceremonial chambers. I purchased waterproof hiking boots just for this adventure and I’m glad I did since there are tons of rocks and pebbles throughout. There is a section where socks but no shoes are required and I recommend wearing thick socks since you will be stepping on rough stones for part of it.

I was nervous about the hike to the cave entrance but it’s a cleared pathway with tons of tree cover so it was probably the easiest part of the trip. The first of three times you cross the river it was neck high for me (I’m 5’ 2”) but it was still and clear so I was able to hop my way across without issue. The other two crossings the water hit my mid-calf.

Something I wasn’t quite aware of beforehand is that you are expected to leave all of your belongings in the vehicle before making the 45 minute hike to the cave. The only thing you carry is your life vest (if needed) and a water bottle NO CAMERAS OR PHONES. Once you get to the cave, you leave your water bottle near the entrance, put on your helmet, then you’re off. If you have a snack or any important medications, you can give them to the tour guide who will have a dry bag with them throughout.

Overall, this cave experience is exactly what you think it is in terms of being a once in a lifetime excursion you should absolutely take (if you’re physically up to it) when visiting Belize.

Also, the lunch afterwards was delicious! And definitely well earned after such a strenuous adventure. In short, just do it!

I almost don’t want to write a review for this place because I don’t want the ATM cave to become even busier then what it already is, but our tour was that good .. especially our tour guide Hue..he is the perfect example of a person that loves his job and loves what he does.. you can see it on his face and the way he talks about it.. his knowledge of the Mayan culture and this cave was amazing.. we started with a drive from San Ignacio towards the cave (we had our own car and just followed the van) early in the morning . When we got to the site, everything stays:your phone your backpack your CAMERA(S) everything.. they provide the helmets, the vests, the lights so you won’t have to worry about anything .. and then from there was pure WOW.. Hue was funny, considerate of each member of the group and helpful, answered all questions and made the tour memorable!! After you finish and get back to the car, you even get a nice meal and a rum punch!! What more can I say then: WE LOVED IT!!

This tour was outstanding! We booked with PAC-Z tours, which I would highly recommend. We followed the tour guide in our own car to the start of the hike. The picnic area has toilets and showers.

The hike itself was incredible! If you are used to hiking and in shape you will be fine on this tour. Unfortunately, we saw many people that were not physically fit to be on this tour and were not having a good time. We swam across rivers, swam to the entrance of the cave and since we had a fit group, we went through a couple off back slots that were neck deep with water. That was the best part! There is a 15ft ladder you need to climb to reach the end, plus scrambling up a rock formation and climbing up over a ledge to reach the area where the pottery and skeletons are. The last section involves hiking in your socks.

The only shoes you need are old tennis shoes and socks. DO NOT listen to any of those bloggers that are trying to make a buck by suggesting you need Merrells or some other expensive water shoe. Obviously, they have not done this hike. I wore workout leggings and a quick dry shirt.

Bring a snack bar and leave it at the picnic area at the cave entrance. You will be thankful you did.

Unforgettable ATM caves tour!

We had the most wonderful and enjoyable tour with Mayawalk Tours yesterday. We can’t say enough about our guides, Eric Manzanero and Juan Carlos, who were professional, extremely knowledgeable, very personable and clearly love what they do. Eric made sure each and every person in our group was looked after and felt comfortable during the challenging sections of the tour.

The Mayawalk Tours cave includes roundtrip transportation from San Ignacio, all entrance fees, life jackets and helmets, a licensed local guide, a full lunch and delicious rum punch.

We thoroughly recommend MayaWalk Tours for anyone wanting to do the ATM Caves tour.

Our family was picked up from Black Rock Lodge and shuttled to the MayaWalk Tours facility in town where we joined the tour group. As cameras are not allowed our tour guide Hugh and the shuttle driver took some pictures and videos as we hiked the trail to the cave and shared these with us through WhatsApp. Hugh did a great job narrating and making sure everyone in the group was comfortable to meet the challenges faced on the way to the top of the cave system.

This tour should have been on our bucket list, but we didn’t know how incredible it would be. But now it is checked off (we added it on afterwards).

We did the tour with Eric from MayaWalk Tours who was so knowledgeable about the area and the history of the site. He was trained by National Geographic and his way of delivering the knowledge was so mesmerizing. And as he says “I love what I do, and I do what I love”. This shows in all he does. He answered so many questions and showed us different ways through the caves, while keeping us laughing and in awe of the stalactites and stalagmites (they might make it to top will always remind me they are at the bottom growing up).

Now about the tour, All I can say is you have to do it to ‘Belize’ it.

We booked our tour through Black Rock Lodge and couldn't have been happier! Hector was the guide for our small group, Hugh and Juan Carlos worked with other small groups. Hector was, without a doubt, the best guide for any experience that I've ever had. He was incredibly informative about Mayan culture and history, Belizean flora and fauna, and clearly loved sharing his knowledge with our group. He was able to connect with everyone from my almost 10 year old son to the academics in the group. He provided outstanding coaching through the tight/high/slippery bits of the cave system and never once did I worry about the safety of my son or any other group member. He also was willing to really slow the pace of the tour to keep us from bumping up against other groups.

ATM cave itself was breathtaking and exciting (beyond the sacrificial sites). It does require a willingness to get dirty and step outside your comfort zone, but I think most people with relatively decent fitness can do this tour. I do think that 9/10 is probably the youngest you would want to go on this trip due to both the content and conditions.

Lunch was great and the whole team told jokes on the bus back to San Ignacio. The trip leaders even let my son tell jokes on the bus! I also want to give a shoutout to Hugh who helped me to get my Keen sandals (a must on this tour) repaired after the sole detached while climbing. Hugh took my sandals to a guy who repairs them and then Kareem, one of the awesome drivers, brought them to me at Black Rock the next day. This company goes above and beyond!
