We had an absolute blast doing this tour (and two others!) with Maya Walk during our time in Belize. Our tour guide was Juan Carlos and we LOVED our full day with him: super knowledgeable, fun, and engaging. He encouraged us to open up and ask questions, and we learned so much about Mayan religious and sociological history! We had an amazing time exploring the caves, scrambling up rocks, and admiring the rock formations, and we gobbled up the stew chicken lunch provided as soon as we got out. It was a great and intimate experience from start to finish, and we would highly highly highly recommend Maya Walk for all of your San Ignacio tours.

Our driver James and our tour guide Hector were both incredible towards making this trip safe and fun. James drove us there safely over some pretty rough road and Hector was informative and entertaining while explaining all of the different parts of the cave. My understanding is that MayaWalk has been doing this tour since tours were allowed around 20 years ago so you know you’re in good hands. Our guide, Hector, said this was his 2,900+ tour into that cave.

I also want to shout out to Chelsea for taking such good care of things on the admin side. She was lovely and well organized making planning and purchasing this excursion a breeze.

I was admittedly nervous about this excursion since I’m not an outdoorsy person but everything turned out fine and I’m glad I pushed myself to do it. James and Hector were also great about quelling any fears I had and making sure I was comfortable.

The cave itself is incredible and you spend most of the time wading through a crystal clear stream before climbing into the ceremonial chambers. I purchased waterproof hiking boots just for this adventure and I’m glad I did since there are tons of rocks and pebbles throughout. There is a section where socks but no shoes are required and I recommend wearing thick socks since you will be stepping on rough stones for part of it.

I was nervous about the hike to the cave entrance but it’s a cleared pathway with tons of tree cover so it was probably the easiest part of the trip. The first of three times you cross the river it was neck high for me (I’m 5’ 2”) but it was still and clear so I was able to hop my way across without issue. The other two crossings the water hit my mid-calf.

Something I wasn’t quite aware of beforehand is that you are expected to leave all of your belongings in the vehicle before making the 45 minute hike to the cave. The only thing you carry is your life vest (if needed) and a water bottle NO CAMERAS OR PHONES. Once you get to the cave, you leave your water bottle near the entrance, put on your helmet, then you’re off. If you have a snack or any important medications, you can give them to the tour guide who will have a dry bag with them throughout.

Overall, this cave experience is exactly what you think it is in terms of being a once in a lifetime excursion you should absolutely take (if you’re physically up to it) when visiting Belize.

Also, the lunch afterwards was delicious! And definitely well earned after such a strenuous adventure. In short, just do it!

We booked two tours with MayaWalk (ATM and Tikal) and highly recommend this company for professionalism and knowledgeable guides.

ATM Tour
My husband and I did the ATM (Actun Tunichil Muknal) Tour mid-May. It truly is a once in a lifetime adventure and learning experience, and I highly recommend doing it when you’re staying in San Ignacio area. My husband and I are active and adventurous; however, this is one of the most exciting and strenuous activities that we have done. We went with MayaWalk and their website has good description of the tour; however, it doesn’t fully capture the full amazing and exhilarating experience. Eric, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable about the history, the Mayan Culture in Central America, and the geology. Eric and our driver, Damien, were with us throughout the tour and very professional. Highly recommend MayaWalk for this tour.

Tikal Tour
I really wanted to visit Tikal Mayan Ruin in Guatemala while we were in San Ignacio since the border crossing was only 7 miles away. Although we have a rental car for a week, we decided to go with a tour agency and so glad we did since it was stress-free and we had a tour guide to learn about Guatemala and Tikal. We lucked out that we were the only couple and had a private tour. Thanks to MayaWalk Tours for making our trip stress free and memorable! This website describes our tour with an update that tourists that have proof of being fully vaccinated, can cross the border without taking the COVID-19 test. We also needed to show proof of travel insurance crossing the Belize Border

Unforgettable ATM caves tour!

We had the most wonderful and enjoyable tour with Mayawalk Tours yesterday. We can’t say enough about our guides, Eric Manzanero and Juan Carlos, who were professional, extremely knowledgeable, very personable and clearly love what they do. Eric made sure each and every person in our group was looked after and felt comfortable during the challenging sections of the tour.

The Mayawalk Tours cave includes roundtrip transportation from San Ignacio, all entrance fees, life jackets and helmets, a licensed local guide, a full lunch and delicious rum punch.

We thoroughly recommend MayaWalk Tours for anyone wanting to do the ATM Caves tour.

Our family was picked up from Black Rock Lodge and shuttled to the MayaWalk Tours facility in town where we joined the tour group. As cameras are not allowed our tour guide Hugh and the shuttle driver took some pictures and videos as we hiked the trail to the cave and shared these with us through WhatsApp. Hugh did a great job narrating and making sure everyone in the group was comfortable to meet the challenges faced on the way to the top of the cave system.

We booked our tour through Black Rock Lodge and couldn't have been happier! Hector was the guide for our small group, Hugh and Juan Carlos worked with other small groups. Hector was, without a doubt, the best guide for any experience that I've ever had. He was incredibly informative about Mayan culture and history, Belizean flora and fauna, and clearly loved sharing his knowledge with our group. He was able to connect with everyone from my almost 10 year old son to the academics in the group. He provided outstanding coaching through the tight/high/slippery bits of the cave system and never once did I worry about the safety of my son or any other group member. He also was willing to really slow the pace of the tour to keep us from bumping up against other groups.

ATM cave itself was breathtaking and exciting (beyond the sacrificial sites). It does require a willingness to get dirty and step outside your comfort zone, but I think most people with relatively decent fitness can do this tour. I do think that 9/10 is probably the youngest you would want to go on this trip due to both the content and conditions.

Lunch was great and the whole team told jokes on the bus back to San Ignacio. The trip leaders even let my son tell jokes on the bus! I also want to give a shoutout to Hugh who helped me to get my Keen sandals (a must on this tour) repaired after the sole detached while climbing. Hugh took my sandals to a guy who repairs them and then Kareem, one of the awesome drivers, brought them to me at Black Rock the next day. This company goes above and beyond!

Hi Amy, Thank you so much for such a detailed review of your tour with us. Hector loves guiding children as much as adults and I am glad you enjoyed your experience with him. I love working alongside these amazing guys and It brings me great joy and pride to read comments like yours and see that they are being celebrated and recommended for their passion. “Choose a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life” – Confucius. Thank you for choosing us Samantha & the MayaWalk Team

We arranged this trip through our hotel, but they outsource to Mayawalk because there are only so many guides that are able to take guests into ATM. Our guide Juan Carlos (JC) was excellent. He had tons of great information to share with us along the way and kept my young teenage sons included and involved in the conversations. The driver O'Neil was good too and saw us safely to and from the excursion. The trip itself is unreal: we've done some caving before and this was a very exciting and interesting cave all by itself. Then you add the 1,300 year-old Mayan relics and skeletons on top of that! Wow!

A word on safety: standards are definitely different in Belize than in Canada. At no point did I feel unsafe on our trip. Mayawalk makes this a priority and insists on close-toed shoes, life jackets, helmets, etc. but other guides/companies did not appear to have the same standards. There is some climbing of wet rocks, squeezing through tight spaces, etc. involved that I don't know if you would get to do back home, but we had no issues. I could see the potential for injuries and our guide definitely said that there have been some in the past. If you're considering this tour, I would definitely recommend Mayawalk for both the quality of our guide and the safety aspect.

Couples
Outstanding tour guided by Hugh, who was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he bought the caves to life (or rather, he brought us to the underworld….) more physical than we had thought but completely worth the effort. There are some small/tight places to squeeze through and this does involve lots of climbing and clambering up and down rocks. Some swimming is also done on the trip and you are in water for a lot of the time.
The sights and atmosphere is unlike anything else we have seen.
An absolute must see/do.
Unforgettable - thanks again Hugh.

We had the most amazing time on this adventure!! We had a group of varying physical capabilities and we all really enjoyed ourselves! Our guide was Juan Carlos, “JC,” and he was so incredibly informative about everything from the history of the Maya to the geology and navigation of the cave. He made us all feel comfortable immediately, and it was beyond evident that he enjoyed guiding these tours. I can’t believe we almost didn’t do this. If you come to Belize it is a must!!

Fantastic tour that combines geology with adventure and an amazing cultural immersion. Eric was arguably the best guide I've ever had - he's passionate about the cave and Mayan heritage but his presentation and communication skills are off the charts. He brought the experience to life!
Great company, well organized, great lunch.
