About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Rochelle W0 contributionsThis is a must do!What an amazing experience! We had Carla for our tour.. what a knowledgeable lady! Wow, did we learn a lot about the culture and ruins! Highly recommend this company if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed!Written December 4, 2024
- F9809TVmelissas0 contributionsFun, memorable experience!!!We are so grateful St. Leonard's accommodated our situation when traveling between Caye Caulker and The Sleeping Giant. Jose picked us up at the Belize City water taxi terminal, took us on an AMAZING cave tubing adventure, and delivered us to The Sleeping Giant. It was an incredibly long day for him, but you couldn't tell. Jose was knowledgeable in all things Belizean and made the tour fun and educational! We would strongly recommend Jose and St. Leonard's to all wanting to explore a beautiful cave and unbelievable river.Written December 1, 2024
- L2321ODannef0 contributionsExcellent experienceElio, our guide, was prompt in picking us up from the hotel. He was very energetic throughout the day, which I know can be exhausting on long day tours! We had to walk up to the ruins due to high waters on the ferry, but Elio made it educational and we got to try different plants along the way. It was an amazing and memorable day, made even better by an amazing guide!Written November 13, 2024
- StefanU990 contributionsLife is beautifulMe and my son had a terrific horse ride to Xunantunich ruins with a very nice, comitted and well read guide with the name Jose (or was it Felipe 😉 BR Stefan & FredrikWritten November 8, 2024
- lalove9120 contributionsA wonderful experience100% must do. We stayed at Cha Creek where Elio, our guide picked us up. The tours were beyond fantastic. He is so engaging and knowledgeable. We spent all day with him and were fascinated by all he had to share. He took pics of our groups and stopped to educate us on various flora and fauna in the area. He knew a lot of info about the Maya people and their belief system. He spotted monkeys in the trees, took us to a fun restaurant, and then we went cave exploring (and cave jumping) on the tubing tour. Just so freaking cool. Loved every minute.Written September 11, 2024
- 457jerryd0 contributionsGreat way to spend the dayJose and Mark were very knowledgeable and entertaining. Jose made our less experienced riders comfortable and made sure everyone was good at every stop. It was a great way to spend the day. Even an early afternoon downpour couldn’t dampen our spirits. I would use this company for other tours.Written August 14, 2024
- julianem8340 contributionsFirst time Horseback RidingOur guide Carla was awesome! She was extremely knowledgeable about the ruins and was very attentive during horseback riding. Would definitely recommend riding through the rainforest. Truly a unique experience!Written July 8, 2024
- Nomad7420970 contributionsTop-Notch Guide & Beautiful PlaceOur guide, Jose, was wonderful. He took great care of us and made sure we had a blast. Jose went above and beyond for us. The caves are one of the most beautiful geologic features I've ever seen, and the cultural remains are stunning.Written July 7, 2024
- Z2987UPjamesw0 contributionsWell run operation. We had a great time at the Mayan ruins with Elio our guide. Knowledgeable and entertaining, Elio spent time to show us many different aspects to life in the ancient times. He was funny and kept my daughter and her friend entertained while teaching us about their life. We changed our plan and did a waterfall hike instead of the tubing which was just beautiful. The girls rock jumped and swam in the clear river. Highly recommend!!Written June 26, 2024
- hardied0 contributionsAbsolutely recommend- fantastic guide! We had the most lovely day with Carla and St Leonard's travel. The horse ride by the river reviled so much unique wildlife and our host was amazingly good with the horses regarding safety and instruction. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the Mayan ruins and history and culture. We enjoyed every bit of it. Lunch was worth the extra 10 mins in the car and was my favorite meal of my trip! The chocolate making was interesting and worth the time. We just enjoyed the whole day and enjoyed Carla tremendously! I would absolutely recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in history and wildlife!Written May 29, 2024
- stonesriver030 contributionsThe best tour of temples and cavesWe had an amazing time with Elio. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the history with others. He even pointed out plants, animals and gave us a great information on the usage of these things in the Mayan culture. The caves were refreshing, thrilling and adventurous. He maximized the time there. You will not regret booking this and I would definitely do it again.Written May 25, 2024
- karleys20130 contributionsFun day at Mayan Ruins & Canoeing in a CaveElio picked us up, on time and took us for the day. He guided us through Xunantunich providing historical & regional information. Very patient with our group walking, stopping for pictures etc. Then onto lunch at a cute outdoor restaurant with excellent food (D Family Restaurant). Next we canoed into Barton Creek Cave where he guided us and gave us so much information. Then a dip in the creek. We never felt rushed and really enjoyed the day. Highly recommend this tour company.Written May 20, 2024
- mayabD91AR0 contributionsGreat tour with exceptional guide! Our guide, Jose, was extremely helpful and welcoming. We ended up being just two with our guide which was great and much more private. Jose went above and beyond to give us the best experience on the tour but also on our visit of San Ignacio as well. He gave us tips and great insight on must sees! He taught us a lot about the site itself, but also about the fauna and the flora around. It was very informative and interesting. Overall, it was a great tour with an amazing guide.Written May 19, 2024
- katelynmM7777MN0 contributionsA must in Belize!I would give this 100 stars if I could. This was such a great experience! It was just my husband and I on the tour with our guide Jose. Jose was unbelievable. He was engaging, knowledgeable and most of all patient and understanding. Also, the horses were extremely well behaved and well trained. The day of our trip was already really hot! It was 100 degrees even by 9am. I will admit I am not great in the heat and may have underestimated how hot it really was. The ride to the Xunantunich was about 1.5 hours on the horse and it was so good. Jose told us about many of the local sites, animals and plants during the ride. When we got to the site we headed up to the ruins on foot and that is when I started to feel lightheaded. I had to stop and sit and drink water. Jose was so patient and made sure to keep me in the shade and put my safety first at all times! He modified the tour so we could see all the important areas and even though I was not able to climb all the stairs I do not feel like I missed out on any part of the experience! Since we decided riding the horses back might not be the best idea, he arranged all the transportation to get us back to our hotel and even stopped at the local store so we could pick up some drinks. Again, the customer service and overall experience was beyond expectations and if you are thinking doing horseback riding this is the place to go! Thank you to everyone at St. Leonard’s and especially to Jose for an amazing experience!!Written May 18, 2024
- tammygJ6187XA0 contributionsHighlight of our Honeymoon! We took a trip to Belize for our honeymoon and had a trail ride booked at another location. That morning we drove to San Ignacio and the trail ride we booked fell through. St. Leonard Tours saved the day! Without a reservation, they had us out on the trails within an hour. The owners were accommodating, kind, and fun to visit with. I can't say enough great things about our guide, the horses, and the beautiful scenery. Our guide was knowledgeable, fun, and so patient! The horses were great as well. They were both sweethearts and beginner-safe, but since we have riding experience, we were happy that they were not trail sour. We were able to venture where we wanted, cross a river and ride side-by-side in open areas. The scenery at the farm, in the jungle, and along the river was breathtaking. Even got lucky and spotted a toucan! Highly recommend St. Leonard Tours!Written May 11, 2024

Disclaimer: I only did the Farm Ride with Carla, but I didn't see that tour listed on here. So this review is ONLY for the glorious afternoon I spent horseback riding on Carla's farm.
Carla changed my life. I had wanted to go horseback riding for some time, but always had a little fear of horses. When I got to the farm I was excited, but I started crying when I saw the horse I would be riding. I was ready to go back to my hotel and tried to tip Carla anyway, but she wouldn't accept it. She just talked to me calmly and let me cry out my feelings. She suggested I try another horse. The other horse was a little bit shorter and I immediately felt better.
Instead of riding her own horse throughout the tour she walked alongside my horse and helped lead him. Those couple hours of riding and talking to her was THERAPY. She talked to me, advised me, gave me some wisdom and pointed out all the beautiful plants to be seen on the farm. The land is incredibly beautiful by the way! She asked me about my terrain preferences and checked in with me the whole time. I gained so much comfort during the trail and halfway through she saw that I was much more comfortable and helped me do a fast walk with the horse. It was so fun. I felt safe the entire journey. When we got. back to where we started, she had me get on the original horse I was supposed to use. I felt safe enough to do so and it was incredible to face this fear I had. I am forever grateful to her.

We had a great time on this trip and would absolutely recommend it to all levels of riders! We were one intermediate and two novice riders that had no troubles on the ride. The horses were well trained. Our guide was very knowlegeable of the area with personal experiences to relate and did a great job guiding us on the hour and a half ride from the stables then down along the river and up to Xunantunich. It was a beautiful ride through the jungle along the river where we saw iguanas and spider monkeys and tasted allspice leaves. The tour was personalble and small which allowed for nice conversations. If you like horses this tour is a great way to see Mayan ruins.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review!
We are so grateful for your kind words and delighted to hear that you had a great time on our horseback riding tour with St Leonard's.
It warms our hearts to know that riders of all levels, from intermediate to novice, found the experience enjoyable and trouble-free. Our well-trained horses are indeed one of our greatest assets, and we're thrilled they contributed to a positive adventure for you and your companions.
We appreciate your compliments regarding our knowledgeable guide. Sharing personal experiences and insights about the area is something we take pride in, and it's fantastic to hear that it enhanced your journey. The diverse sights along the jungle, river, and up to Xunantunich seem to have left a lasting impression, especially with the encounters of iguanas and spider monkeys—what a remarkable experience!
We're also pleased that the personalized and small-group nature of the tour allowed for nice conversations. Building a connection with our guests is important to us, and we're glad you felt the tour was personable.
Your recommendation means the world to us! If you ever find yourself seeking more adventures, whether with horses or exploring the wonders of Mayan ruins, we would be honored to welcome you back.
Wishing you many more incredible journeys ahead!

The day with Carla, Rod and Miguel was our favorite day of our Belize adventure.
My husband, and 3 year old daughter met them at their stables for a private horse ride through their farm/ jungle along the river. We were introduced to Belizian history, taught about the flora and fauna. Our 3 year old LOVES horses and Miguel was so wonderful with her.
We then transitioned to a tour of Xunitunich with Carla. We learned so much about the Mayans at our pace with no pressure. Carla even introduced us to stingless bees! Carla and Rod have children of their own and were perfect with our 3 year old and helping to make sure we all has a wonderful time. St Leonard’s horses appeared very cared for and our favorite am Appaloosa! Thank you for spending the day with us and making our trip so special.

Amazing experience for our whole family! This is a great local family run business. We learned so much at the Xunantunich Maya ruins, Carla was a great guide and had incredible knowledge to share about the area. The horseback ride along the river was beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see howler monkeys. The family was so friendly and accommodating. We highly recommend Carla and her family:)

We had an amazing experience overall to say the least. First, due to floods in the area, the Xunantunich ruins were closed, we were offered couple of options by the St. Leonard’s Tours, including a refund. We went with alternative tour in another Mayan ruins in the area as well as horseback ride. Second, overall tour was very well organized. Third, the tour organizers were responsive and accommodating, they found an option for us to do the later tour, as we were arriving to Belize too late to start 7:30 am regular tour. Last but not least, our guide Jose was attentive, knowledgable and very funny. Really recommended, we had so much fun! Thank you, St. Leonard’s tours for such a memorable day!

My daughter and I did the horseback ride from Leonard's Stable to Xunantunich. Our guides were Joseph and Miguel. We had a beautiful ride through fields to the trail along the river. When we arrived at Xunantunich Rod met us there and he was our guide at the ruins. He was very knowledgeable about the Mayan ruins. Carla was great in answering our emails and setting up our booking. When we got back to the stables Rod had one of the local Belizeans shuck us a coconut and we drank coconut milk then ate coconut meat. It was a nice way to end the day. I would highly recommend this stable.

We loved this outing! Carla was so knowledgeable about the area and was patient with us as we did not have much experience with horses. The area was beautiful, the horses were well trained and the Mayan ruins were quiet and impressive. We couldn’t have asked for a better time.

We did the farm ride and it was perfect for beginners and intermediate riders. The hike to see the Mayans ruins was hell but I would have rather do it on foot than go by horseback… THE VIEW WAS WORTH IT!

Booked a horse back tour to Xunantunich with St Leonard's Tours beginning of May. We had 5, 'sort of', done this before horse riders. Jose' was the lead and fitted us extremely well to our horses and their demeanor. They walked; we rode. They pointed out sights along our route to the ferry and then the site. They gave us a little history, stories of the animals, trees and birds. Once at the sight, similar info was given, what had occurred here, how it came to be in the condition now etc. Jose' had a working knowledge, not just a memorized scrip to follow. He was able to answer more probing questions too. All in all a highlight of our Belize trip. Jose' and his group were fun, entertaining and we highly recommend this tour.

Hi. As I could not see the start time, I was wondering if you are flexible? According to the shuttle we are arriving to San Ignacio at 9am, as we are staying in town for one day, I was wondering if this tour still would be possible to be booked?
Thank you in advance for your response.
