- danielh50 contributionsMust see while visiting Belize regionA visit to Tikal (as well as the ATM) were recommended by friends and most travel guides. Our family, two mid-50s and teenage son, selected Belize Family based on the reviews. Our guide was Sergio, he was great, very knowledgeable, set a good pace. Day was hot for us (from the Northeast US), not for locals. Lots of climbing steps of the temples, not much shade except the paths between sites. Bring lots of water and comfortable shoes. Also bus ride is very bumpy in many spots along the way (and takes more than 2 hours overall). Lunch was very good - we had the chicken and beef fajitas. Overall enjoyable- agree with the recommendations!Written January 9, 2025
- Alex W0 contributionsTikal day trip from Belize - absolutely worth itTikal is breathtaking. Our guide was awesome. There’s several hours to explore the old city ruins. And you hike up to the top of the temples for some incredible views. We had a rainy afternoon which added to the ambience. I only wish we had more time in this mystical place.Written December 25, 2024

- aaronbP48KA0 contributionsDo NOT Sleep on Tikal! This tour was amazing! They were kind enough to pick us up from our Airbnb that wasn’t a normal pickup spot. The journey to Guatemala and across the border was incredibly smooth and easy. Our Guatemalan driver, Hugo, was so great. He pointed out some interesting places along the way to Tikal and answered any questions we had. Our tour guide once at Tikal was spectacular. He took us off the beaten path several times so that we could see some additional sites and was a wealth of knowledge about Mayan culture and history. Tikal is so massive that seeing everything in one day is impossible, but he went out of his way to cram in as much as we possibly could before we headed back. Lunch was lovely on the way home, also. If you’re in San Ignacio, you definitely need to look these folks up and go.Written December 16, 2024
- G6762BVjoannes0 contributionsA Long DayTikal was impressive but don’t under estimate the amount of walking. We had someone with difficulty keeping up so it extended our day. Our guide Louis was extremely knowledgeable but he did seem to provide a little too much information since our lunch wasn’t until 4 pm (we found out that 2 pm is more typical) and we didn’t get back until very late. Crossing the border on the return was quicker but it took about an hour outbound due to so many of us having to pay exit costs from Belize. There were 15 in our group and several other groups seemed to get to the border around the same time. Lunch was really good but after all the hiking and climbing I wish they choose a restaurant that served cold beer!Written December 16, 2024
- alisonhK3756AC0 contributionsFun kayaking tour, with wildlife spotting and tasty lunchWe had a brilliant time. Cisco was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable about the wildlife. We spotted monkeys and lots of iguanas Kayaking on the rapids was lots of fun and the lunch was delicious.Written December 11, 2024
- 834yvetteb0 contributionsUnforgettable experienceA truly incredible experience! Highly recommend. I will never forget this excursion. We took kids ages 8-13, and they were absolutely thrilled. You do need to be able to do some climbing and swimming (with a lifejacket).Written December 1, 2024
- rochellaf0 contributionsWhat a Day!The ATM cave tour was a day we won’t forget. This trip is the whole package- geology, history, biology, and theology! We learned so much from our incredibly experienced guide, Eric. We started off in a large group but then broke up into a group of six. This tour is very well organized and safety is a top priority. But, this is not a trip for someone with physical issues. There are many parts that require strength and coordination. To start, we crossed a river three times before getting to the caves. Once we got there, it was swimming, climbing, and careful steps to make it to the end. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are fantastic! Once you get to the end, you are in for an unforgettable experience. Seeing the Mayan pottery used for sacrifice and the skeletons that were crystallized is mind blowing. No photos are allowed so the only way to see these artifacts is to see them in person. It is a long day, but so worth the time!Written November 26, 2024
- rochellaf0 contributionsNot to be Missed!A trip to Tikal is a must if you are visiting Belize. We stayed in San Ignacio and had our guide pick us up at our hotel. It was a quick trip to the Guatemalan border and then two hours to the site. The temples are beyond impressive. There is so much history and beauty at this location. Not only the incredible architecture, but we saw many wild animals and we were serenaded by howler monkeys. It truly was a day we won’t forget!Written November 26, 2024

- Angie R0 contributionsLife changing experienceExtremely memorable!!!! First of all I don’t travel alone. My friend missed her flight and I took a chance. I booked this tour spontaneously. 100% safe. My first driver from Belize was very nice and made me feel secure. He offered to stop and get my breakfast. Chicken tacos is not my thing in the morning, so I opted out till I got to Guatemala and that was the best decision ever!!!!! My driver personally was walked me through the international border and talked to the other driver. Introduced me and went about my way in Guatemala. It was very straightforward and just make sure you have $20us to pay. When I got with my driver Ruby in Guatemala he asked me “what I would like for breakfast?” It was phenomenal. I went for the traditional breakfast with a natural drink and I’m so glad I did. Have some grace with Ruby he doesn’t speak English well, but he’s a great driver and he’ll make sure you’re safe. Rudy picked up my tour guide Benny. Benny is one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever come across. He’s a 100% Mayan and speaks many languages. He’s studied his stuff and you can see how passionate he is about his culture. I admire that! He also teach you so much. I grantee you won’t leave Tikal without an imprint. Make sure you request Benny. My trip to Tikal was life changing!!!!!!! I learned so much and I’m so glad I went!!!!!!! I can’t even explain the experience I had in Tikal. Just book the trip!!! You’ll go to lunch at Gonzalez, order the caldo de gallina which is chicken soup. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. The caldo was sensational. My experience was amazing. I highly highly recommend taking a change, just do it. Also, they don’t obligate you to tip, but I highly recommend being considerate of their time and patience. Give what you can and if you can of course. Remember what you put in this world comes back to you some how.Written November 10, 2024
- jaclyntE6295JM0 contributionsHighy recommend Explore Inland ToursI really enjoyed the day trip to Tikal from San Ignacio. We were picked up and driven to the border where we met our Guatemala driver, Anastacio. After a fairly short border crossing, we were in Guatemala and picked up our Tikal guide, Sammy. We made a stop on the way to a little shop that offered free coffee and restrooms. Sammy was a great guide for Tikal providing overview and giving us time to explore. We were even able to see an active excavation site. After the tour, we stopped and had lunch at Restaurant Gonzalez. Overall, a great experience.Written November 9, 2024
- U5107IScandys0 contributionsAwesome tourA must do tour. Marlin was an awesome guide!! We were dealing with the flooding from Nadine and was hoping that as the weather improved that this tour would be available. Marlin made it happen with his stories and knowledge of the history of the area, to helping my daughter (with a bad knee) and myself cross a river that we were unable to drive through. He took such great care of us. This tour was a highlight of our trip to San Iganico. Thank you Marlin.Written October 25, 2024

My family of 3 couples really enjoyed our experience with Belize Cave Tours. Marvin picked us up promptly at the appointed time and took us to the site in a new and very comfortable van. He did a great job of explaining local plants and rock formations on the hike down to river put-in point. Marvin also did a great job of shepherding the larger group down the river, through the cave along with opportunities to jump off of rock formations if we wished. Great experience - I would highly recommend it!

Fun trip. We got to float through two caves. Sisco was our guide and he was amazing. He drove us there, walked with us and explained a lot about the forest and the Mayans, pulled us through most of the cave while we were all tied together. served us dinner and drove us home.

It was an incredible day visiting Xanantunich and cave tubing. The guides were fantastic. So much knowledge and energy. I still can’t believe the stunning Mayan city, the fascinating caves with stalagmites, stalactites and columns. So much fun and a once in a lifetime experience!

Leo was incredibly knowledgeable and agile with our plans. We planned on cave tubing, then we added Xunantunich beforehand (little extra cost) and then hadn’t eaten breakfast so we stopped and ate at a local diner. He rolled with it like it was nothing. I think I learned more in a day then a whole semester of college haha. Beautiful tour, amazing experience, great person and easy company to work with. Highly recommended.

Absolutely fabulous experience. We were collected from our hotel, given a really nice lunch and rum punch!
It’s then a walk with your tube, for about 30-35 minutes. There’s a choice as to whether you tube on your own or are tethered with others and towed by the guide. I chose to be towed, my husband tubed on his own. The caves are amazing and at times we switched our helmet lights off and floated in the dark.
There is then the choice of getting out and taking a walk to another part of the cave and to jump in. I didn’t do that but my husband did. I’m glad I didn’t as the walk looked a bit tricky under foot and slippery. There was bit also where there was a narrow passage to swim through, my husband filmed this and again I’m glad I didn’t do that, looked a bit claustrophobic.
Overall had a fabulous time, the guides were amazing and gave us some really useful information about the history of the Mayans. We were dropped back to the hotel but not before a very generous top up of rum punch!

The day was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. We started the morning with a pick up at our hotel , it ended up just being myself, my friend and Leo. Once we arrived, we walked over picked up our tubes and life jackets and headed out! Leo timed it perfectly so we were able to avoid just about every single group. He anticipated where they would go and made our experience unforgettable! He pointed out certain trees and small caves as well as gave us just so much history about Belize! He was a great mix of adventure, fun and history! We were able to jump off some rocks on the last tour and he really took his time showing up everything there was to learn about. On the way out we enjoyed a nice long float on the river, and for lunch we had a nice picnic outside the park. It was lovely and we were able to chat with Leo and learn about the country and the history. We never felt rushed and Leo was able to answer all of our questions. I would highly recommend this tour with him !

I would highly recommend for tours or transfers. My husband and I were lucky enough to have Francisco "Cisco" as our guide for the transfers and the cave tubing. He is extremely knowledgeable about the trees, plant, birds, etc. We learned a lot from him. When we transferred to Placencia, our lodging was hard to find, but Cisco stayed with us until we found the place and made sure we were able to get into the room before leaving! He even carried our bag with all our snorkel gear in it!!. He was amazing!

The whole experience was awesome! It was a combination of an escape, but also an adventure. In certain parts of this experience, you felt like you were on a Discovery Chanel/National Geographic episode. Being from Southern California, I also felt like I was in a mix of an Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Jungle Cruise movie. Overall, we had an absolute blast and recommend this to anyone.

The excursion was outstanding! A great time was had by all. Aside from that, the booking company seriously needs to work on organization. I took off one star for poor management. In reality I could take off more because the trip never would have happened if I didn’t keep contacting them for excursion day logistics. Advice- contact them early and often for specific instructions. Once on the van everything is great.

Our guide was Leo and he was the best! He explained the various trees on our walks to the caves. It's was so beautiful and serene. And the watering hole/cave entrance that he took us to was breath taking.

Do you have to hike to the caves? If so, what is the distance?
Written April 10, 2018
It's a 20 minute hike to the caves and fairly easy to do. Then you're in the caves for about 40 minutes w/your your guide going through about 3 caves. Pretty cool experience!
