*Starting in March 2025, tour is offered the 2nd Saturday of the month at 1pm. Learn about DC's under-recognized, but impactful, punk scene. In the 1980s, the Reagan Administration was reinstating the Selective Service, hippies were turning in yuppies, and the punk scene rose as a reaction to what was received as a souless government. While punk is often associated with London, New York, and LA, there was a substantial scene in DC that had anchors in the Gallery Place neighborhood and elsewhere. On this tour you'll discover what made the DC punk culture distinct from others, the major contributors to the scene, and it's lasting impact on the local music scene today. Tour ends at the MLK Jr. Library, which holds DC's Punk Archive.

See the depths of DC’s history
This was a fantastic experience! I lived in DC for years and never knew the history behind Georgetown. It’s amazing to see the city in a new light. If only walls could talk!

Very well done, insightful, and deeply personal history of Black Georgetown. Highly recommended.
I've never attended a walking tour before but after attending this one, I will attend more. OTMDC takes you off the mall and major crowded tourist attractions to explore a much deeper and more personal side of the history of Washington telling stories rarely told. Despite living in the DC area for a lifetime, I had no idea of the rich history behind Georgetown and its African American community. I emerged on the other end of the tour feeling a deeper sense of connection to this city and its history. My cousin, in from Germany and for whom English is a second language, remarked multiple times how easy our tour guide was to understand and thought many other Europeans visiting DC would enjoy such a deep, insightful, and well done tour.

Excellent way to see beyond the tourist sights!
Easily one of my favorite DC tours (we're local and go on quite a few!). Katie had real historic insights and put them into the context of today's city life. If you feel like you know all there is to know about DC, take this tour and you'll learn more.

A unique tour beyond traditional landmarks
Our guide, Katie, shared her knowledge and insight of the lives of women who once worked in a red-light district, now the central area of DC in an engaging and interactive way. Her narrative was based on her thorough research, which allowed me to understand a topic that would otherwise have been gossipy and judgmental, in light of its political and social context. I could feel her warm and thoughtful gaze toward those women. As a DC resident, I would recommend this walking tour (as well as her other tours) especially to locals because it makes the beaten paths in and around the otherwise inorganic government offices begin to look more colorful than ever.

    Must do this tour!
When in DC, you must take a tour from Off the Mall Tours! I took a large group to Washington DC recently and everyone thought, including myself, that The History of Black Georgetown tour was the highlight of their trip. Katie was not only knowledgeable but a fantastic and entertaining storyteller. I would love to take other tours she offers! Thank you!

    Subcultural History & DIY Spirit
Katie is a terrific historian. This tour was not your average soulless drivel, this is a true DIY passion fueled journey into DC subculture. I absolutely enjoyed getting layered, fact based, anecdotal history of the origins of DC hardcore punk. The people who started the scene and what it has become, Katie does a great job covering the intersections of identity and the socio-political climate of the early 1980s. Support local punks and take this tour!

    WONDERFUL
WOW! I'm a sucker for a walking tour, and this one DELIVERED. Katie, our tour guide, was warm, funny, engaging, and super knowledgeable. Not only did we learn FASCINATING stories about the DC brothels and madams during the Civil War, but we learned wonderful gems about the history of DC itself. Don't sleep on this tour company!

A wonderful way to get to know DC!
This was my second tour with Off The Mall Tours, and once again, it was informative, fun, and a great way to learn more about DC. Katie knows DC and its hidden historical secrets. It was an easy walk, and even though we had rain, it did not impede our enjoyment of the sights. I would highly recommend booking a tour with Katie once you have done the "big" DC stuff. It is a great way to learn about this beautiful and vital city.

    Intresting tour
Our tour guide's knowledge of the city and engaging personality made history come alive. She shared fascinating details, from hidden museum gems to quirky anecdotes, making the tour both informative and entertaining. Would recommend to DC locals or tourists, if you want to go beyond a typical museum visit.

So when I signed up for the tour, I thought it was going to be elsewhere in DC, like in Adams Morgan or somewhere uptown. Instead, Katie took us on a tour in downtown DC and took us back in time to before the new development overtook the neighborhood. I learned so much about locations and buildings I walked past without batting an eye, not even realizing that those locations are important locations in the history of DC punk. Loved the experience and highly recommend this tour if you are a punk rock fan and want to learn about what DC was like in that era.

I loved the multi-sensory approach to this Tour-- music, historical buildings, personal stories, and we even had a Punk Band musician join us for his lived experiences to share!

I loved learning about an important, grassroots movement from our city's rich musical history. Washington DC had a rich and influential punk culture during the late 70s and early 80s and Katie took us back to a time when the city wasn't quite as gentrified and the musical experience was incredibly authentic.
