#3 of 29 Boat Tours & Water Sports in Christchurch
- Barbara P00Beautiful Introduction to New Zealand. Our guide Tina (Tiana?) to Point Reigna and 90 mile Beach was excellent. She is such a hard worker, driving the bus, providing commentary, serving lunch, and keeping track of everyone. Our guide in Russell was excellent also. They both made the tour a lot of fun. We loved Urupukapuka Island on the Hole in the Rock cruise- we could have spent an entire day there. The tour of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds was beautiful and educational. Since our hotel was so close to the bus station, the taxi was unnecessary - in fact, upon return, we did not see the cab and walked back. To the driver’s credit, she followed up and attempted to locate us. In the future, maybe make taxi pickups optional. The motel choice was excellent - next to the water and outstanding room design and layout plus it was immaculately clean.
- jimcA8402NB00Great Whale and Dolphin WatchingSaw all the marine mammals we were expecting to see. Excellent boat ride. Guide was great. Probably could have been advised that we could get breakfast in the train but that would be the only thing I would add.
- 1PFC00Very good tourVery pleasant day with Pete. He is friendly and good fun and the day was run at a good pace so that we could really enjoy all that we saw.
- Brooklyn V00Highly recommend!I really enjoyed every stop on this tour! The pick up process from the cruise ship terminal was simple and explained thoroughly. Our guide (Andrew I believe?) was knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions. He told us about his and others’ experiences during the Christchurch earthquakes and explained the ongoing damages, renovations and changes still happening to this day. It was incredibly impactful and something that I’m really grateful to have learned about. I’m travelling solo and felt very accommodated for and comfortable throughout this tour. Highly recommend!
- Q2206NIkateg00Jet boatsWhat an amazing adventure. The scenery was just incredible. The jet boats were an absolute blast too.
- N7067UBralphs00Awesome Christchurch tourJoseph did a great job describing former and current city scape. He personalized the tour with his experience and insight. We feel very fortunate to have had this experience.
- M7182ZIpriyankas00Delightful sipsI seriously did not expect it to be so exotic. After visiting wine yards in Canada, Switzerland, Spain and Italy, Waipara wine trail was a heady mix of hospitality and diversity. Our tour guide Tania was humorous and chatty, who made the trip memorable.
- nataliea89800AkaroaWonderful way to see a lot more of Christchurch and Akaroa. Lovely guide and the boat trip was fabulous at Akaroa
- diannemembery00Spectacular scenery. A must do if in Christchurch.Arthur’s Pass trip was a fabulous day. The tour guide was fabulous and really tried to make the day great despite the rain. The trip home on the train was a highlight with fabulous views of the spectacular scenery. Was glad we did bus to pass and train home so we could enjoy a wine and beer on the train home. Would highly recommend.
- GerardRodneyG100Christine & Rodney's ExperienceThis is one of the best wine tours I have participated in. We got to meet some of the owners & they shared their perspectives on what is important to them in creating unique wines & ports.
- Travel8731300Room for improvementAkoroa is beautiful and the drive very scenic. The visit to the cheese factory was a waste of time as no information was provided by the guide outlining its history/significance to the region nor was there a rep in the shop to talk about what was happening. Unfortunately the rest of the road trip was similar, ie no detail or history shared. We were dropped off and then back on the bus. By contrast the boat trip was excellent and that guide was extremely well informed.
- Mieka D00A trip I’ll never forget! Our driver Graham did an amazing job driving us through the 150 km/h winds - certainly a trip we won’t forget! A great selection of local wines to be sampled and a delicious platter lunch at Waipara Springs.
- Jeanette R00Waipara Vinyard TourWonderful experience! Great tour guide, good food and beautiful vineyards. Enjoyed others on tour. Would definitely highly recommend.
- Traveler8448500Excellent Winery TourWe went on the Waipara Wine Trail with Leisure Tours end of September 2023. Joseph was a great guide, lots of knowledge about Christchurch and the local farming areas around Christchurch. The trip to the wineries was excellent (great lunch platter) - showcasing the experience and knowledge of the winemakers. Well worth it, highly recommend.
- Journey3022897838700Wine experienceGreat tour driver / leader Very good knowledge and very easy to deal with Would recommend this tour The wineries were very friendly and had great wines

The tour bus seated sixteen people. The seats were narrow with virtually no leg room. My husband I and were so uncomfortable that when the bus made it's first stop we asked for a transport vehicle to come and get us and take us back to the wharf. We were more than willing to forfeit seeing Christchurch and the Giants House. The tour guide asked a shorter woman to change seats, which she did. The new seat was a sit better, but my knees still bumped the seat in front of me. Also, it was next to impossible to see any of the sights that were being pointed out. The three hour round trip to Christchurch should never be taken in a packed van of that size. I would have given 0 stars to the tour, except for the private tour of the Giants House by the owner. We chose to walk back to the wharf (almost a mile) rather than get back on that van.

It was always disappointing to receive poor reviews, especially when you receive a 5 star review for the same tour for the same day. The vehicle the reviewer is complaining about is a 16 passenger seat VW Crafter with coach seating, panoramic windows and is less than 12 months old. Having spoken with the driver who looked after the customers on the day, they were the last to arrive and board the vehicle and were unhappy with where they were seated in the coach from the outset. Please read both reviews and judge for yourself.

Transfer from the ship was dealyed, so we arrived at 1032 at the meeting point, our bus had already left and we needed to take another one. 120 seconds seemed too much...
45 minutes in Christchurch for Sightseeing at University, then 45 minutes in CBD to get some takeaway food, not a single photostop during the trip to and from Christchurch...
Stop at giants house was late and not much time either, had we decided to take the bus to go back. So we decided to walk back to the ship, which gaves us some extra minutes

The scheduled report time is 10.15 with a 10.30 departure. On the day of travel we had around 150 passengers booked on various excursions and nearly everyone had checked in and received their boarding passes for the various excursions by around 10.00 am.
For those that arrived early we were able to arrange early departures and for the very few who were late we held a vehicle back to catch up with the excursion. The reviewer actually arrived some 10 minutes after the scheduled departure time and the late departure which was not something we could control obviously impacted on the time in Christchurch. Had the reviewer arrived at the time requested he would have had a more complete day.

Finding our tour organiser was simple - we were given clear instructions and updates through the TripAdvisor app - and we found our tour and boarded our mini-van.
Janet, our driver was immensely knowledgeable and gave us information on everything. Our seats at the back of the van gave us quite a decreased view, but this was offset with plenty of quick stops for panoramic photo opportunities. Honestly some of the most breathtaking views ever.
The journey to Christchurch was 90 minutes, which we were prepared for. Janet gave a great commentary on the heartbreak and triumph that is Christchurch today. As well as points of interest, spectacular street art, and development/destruction, she also pointed out potential lunch spots and toilets - important info for us travellers👍👍 - and then gave us two stops for sightseeing and then lunch.
Our trip home was a different road - a mixture of a steep decline - lunch did not enjoy that bit - totally my own fault - and then flat plains with a strong wind that was determined to blow us back to Australia!! Janet delivered us safely to our division point, where half our group went to a farm visit and we continued on with a new driver to The Giant’s House at Akaroa.
Luckily Rob was quite outgoing and comedic which made the transition quite smooth. Two of our group members had sustained injuries previously so Rob organised to bring us in closer than normal to the Giant’s House - thank you for going above and beyond what was required, I don’t think two of our group would have gotten in otherwise. And this was definitely well worth the effort to get into! Absolutely loved this artist’s vision of a fantasy garden-scape.
Thanks CLT for an amazing day.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your time with us on your Banks Peninsula and Christchurch tour including the Giant's House. I am really pleased that you enjoyed yourselves and had such a wonderful time with your driver/guides, Janet & Robert, who were with you that day. We pride ourselves in hiring dedicated, knowledgeable, and engaging tour guides that know how to step up to every occasion, and it's great to see that on this particular day they did just that! I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to both of them. It's also great to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Giant's House too, which has became one of the most popular attractions to visit in Akaros. Overall, we are really happy that you were able to have such an enjoyable day thanks to our itinerary and guides.
Thanks again and I hope you get to visit Akaroa and Christchurch again soon!

Our driver was very informative and gave us information about Christchurch City, and the earthquakes and damage to the area and the re-building of the city. Loved the Giants House Tour, it has many statues outside made up of broken tile, etc. and there are many plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Great tour, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the great review on our Christchurch City and Giant's House excursion from Akaroa Port. I'm really pleased you had a nice time and got to learn a lot of information about the city of Christchurch. And it's great that you enjoyed the Giant's House too. This is the first season we have conducted this particular tour, so it's so nice to see that people are enjoying themselves!
Thanks again and I hope you get to visit New Zealand again soon.

The Ruby Princess was an hour late getting in which I understand creates a lot of headaches. That said, the tour operator had one person checking on for many tours and well over 100 people and it was very chaotic. I am not complaining about him as he did the best he could but he needed help!!! Then communication was poor. He said due to backlog of buses a bigger bus was going to take us to town to our smaller buses. We thought downtown Akaroa, not 1.5 hours to Christchurch. Then upon arrival to Christchurch our bus was not there for another 30+ minutes.
Once we got our assigned guide and bus, she did a great job!! Kudos to her! The new bus had big time technical issues with the sound system and she worked around them the best she could! Plus the shoulder straps to our seats belts kept locking up, making them very tight.
Not too impressed with the tour operations and equipment. Luckily we had a great guide! Not sure on using this company again.

We completely understand your frustrations however, those should be directed at the cruise ship and to some degree the poor weather on the day. As you mentioned, the cruise ship decided, for no apparent reason, to begin their tenders an hour late on this particular day. Due to this, it meant that the tenders and coach loading areas were much busier than usual and hence there was a backlog of coaches, waiting on passengers. As you will have seen the loading area is very small with only five coaches permitted in the loading area at any given time.
Our given departure time is 10.30am, however, with the late tendering by the cruise ship, by 10.30 we had less than a quarter of our 200 plus pre booked passengers. Rather than delay the departure for those who had managed to get off early and to avoid our customers standing around in the miserable wet weather we loaded our coaches with those customers we had ashore.
Although many of the customers were doing different tour options all were travelling to Christchurch and the first part of the excursion is the same in all cases. What this meant was that some of our customers had a little longer in the Christchurch than those who were delayed in coming off the cruise ship. However, everyone got to experience the tour that they had booked.
This change to our normal procedure was explained to everyone as they were loaded on our coaches and for those who understood what was happening this arrangement to get them moving and not have to wait in the rain was most appreciated. Logistically as a company we were extremely organised, given the circumstances, and to say that were weren’t is a complete unawareness of what was happening on the day.
As for the other matters you raise, I am a little confused to why you have taken issues with things that were to be expected. Firstly, you booked the Christchurch Sights with Giants House, which is not a local tour of Akaroa as you should have noticed in your itinerary. Secondly, all of our tours that leave from Akaroa to Christchurch include a 30 minute stop at the Botanical Gardens/Christchurch Museum for people to explore on their own, as per our published itinerary.
As for the technical issues you experienced on the second coach, this is something that we have looked into – but we cannot find any issues with either the seat belts or the sound system and no issues have been reported by any of our drivers or other customers.

The tenders are the smaller boats that take you from your cruise ship into the port. Tenders are used when the larger cruise ships can't actually dock in the port.

My husband and I are traveling on a Celebrity Solstice cruise arriving in Akaroa at 8:00 a.m. and departing at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 12, 2019. I'm not sure where we will dock. Can we be picked up and returned to the dock for this excursion?

Large cruise ships do not dock. You will have to tender from your ship and most tours will pick you op from the dock.
