Zoltan made our tour an absolute pleasure with his easy going manner and encyclopedic knowledge of Budapest's history and food origins. The food we were given was absolutely delicious, cheese curd strudel, sour cherry strudel, langos with soured cream and cheese, beef goulash, chicken goulash with spatzle, all chosen by us at each stop. Our foodie feast was exciting, informative and humorous, thank you Zoltan !Written February 7, 2025

- danilasimon0 contributionsGo hungry on this Hungarian food tour!Zoltan was our perfect guide to introduce us to local dishes which he is very proud of. As well as tastings Zoltan filled my hubby and I in with some local knowledge as we walked this tour on flat terrain. From eating the most delicious strudels , to meeting and visiting the local butcher to try various Hungarian sausages and cured salamis, to 2 local restaurants to sample goulash and fish soups then savoury chicken pancake finishing off dramatically with a flambéd walnut purée and chocolate one.All excellent and varied dishes accompanied by a glass or 2 of local reds were much appreciated and enjoyed.Written October 31, 2024
- roberttX4481NO0 contributionsA great choiceOur guide, Zoltan, was really great. He gave us a local's view of great Hungarian food. We got a chance to go to a local bar, restaurants and even a butcher shop without any other tourists, just locals. The food selection was great while seeing a part of the city that isn't overrun with tourists.Written October 28, 2024
- bonvivantejr0 contributionsFun Hood Tour with lots of CultureHad a great stroll around Obuda (non-touristy part of town) and lots of great food and drink. Soups, meats, local dishes and a fabulous dessert, accompanied by a wide selection of beverages.Written October 26, 2024
- Roam407088273590 contributionsIf you are a foodie - do it!Zoltan gave us a very special food tour in Obuda in Budapest. We were the only ones on tour due to a cancelation so got a very personal trip. We got lots of history of Hungary and a great understanding on how Hungarians live today along with great discussions on economy and politics! The butcher was a favorite- most amazing sausage and pork crackling. We also loved the langos too. Some very cool out of the way places that you wouldn't necessarily find or choose on your own. The last restaurant was right on the water. Lots of food. Hungarian goulash best I have had since in Budapest! We'll done Zoltan, we loved our excursion!Written October 26, 2024
- Rickstone20150 contributionsLocal tour with entertaining local guide - relaxedWe had a tour with Zoltan. Zoltan has a sense of history and harks back to the original Hun settlement of Budapest. We liked his insight into life historically in Hungary with the ups and downs of life then and now. We walked around the OBuda neighbourhood-just a few blocks and tried a selection of local foods. We can recommend it as a welcome diversion from the general tourist activities. You are also well fed. You can but a drinks package which makes sense so you can sample the very tasty local offerings.Written October 25, 2024
- Laura D0 contributionsZoltan is a hit with great food and company in Óbuda!!Zoltan was amazing again! We loved his city center tour so much we decided to do his ÓBUDA one as well! It did not disappoint! It was neat to see a part of Buda that we wouldn’t have gone to without Zoltan. The food was next level delicious as were his stories and the history! The restaurants and food were so welcoming and fun!! I would recommend this tour for anyone that wants to see the “real” parts of Buda and eat some authentic cuisine. It is great for anyone, friends, families, couples, Zoltan makes it worth your time!! And to end on a high note, fabulous music and yummy pancake dessert!!!Written October 13, 2024

Our guide was Gyorgy, who gave us interesting and entertaining hours and took us on a lovely culinary trip through “(Buda)-Pest”. It was unanimously the best food tour we have ever done. This tour with Zoltan our guide was terrific fun with delicious tastes from start to finish! We met at the Policeman statue and explored the Pest area by foot stopping into local restaurants off the beaten track where we tasted Hungarian dishes renowned for their authenticity. Zoltan shared historical facts and amusing stories along the way and made our group of strangers feel really comfortable with each other as we shared laughs, food and things stronger! Would definitely recommend this tour as you get a real taste of the culture of Budapest and the wry Hungarian sense of humour! Make sure to look for Zoltan! :-)

We did the Obuda tour. We are a couple spending a few days in Budapest on holiday, just wanted to chill and have a relaxing afternoon with food and culture.
We booked a normal tour but it was just the two of us. Our guide was Zoltan, he is a local in the area and definitely very knowledgeable about Hungary, Budapest and the local district.
Initially we spent 10 minutes in the roman coleseum which is right next to the meeting point. We enjoyed it a lot, felt like a hidden gem that tourists normally don’t find.
The we had 4 food stops in total which was a really good ratio of walking and eating.
The food itself was great, we started from a butcher’s shop with an amazing sausage and progressively continued to fancier and fancier places.
Overall it was a very nice way to spend an afternoon and we would highly recommend it to anyone. In particular, I would recommend trying the Obuda tour as those are the places which few tourists would find on their own.
Come hungry, it’s a lot of food.

We had a fun and delicious experience with George our tour guide as we ate our way thru Budapest. George’s choice of eateries was spot on and delicious! Our favorite was the Langos, but we also enjoyed coffee and pastries, wine, and lots of of other Hungarian delicacies. We also saw many historical artifacts and learned a lot about the history of the area. An added plus was that George shared photos he took of us throughout the tour, provided recipes for some traditional Hungarian dishes, and gave us recommendations for more eateries to visit while we were in town. His recommendations were spot on! We highly recommend this tour as a good starting point for your visit to Budapest as it help us familiarize ourselves with the area and identify places we wanted to go back and explore more.

It was a very well thought through itinerary in the city center of Budapest where all the food that we sampled was authentic, and we patronized only non-touristy restaurants / cafes. Sampling portions were generous but not excessive so there was no overordering / wastage of food. While there were many stations to visit, we never felt rushed. I'm also thankful for Zoltan's personal stories and he was able to connect with every guest very well, which made for a pleasant experience overall for everyone.

We had an absolutely wonderful time on our food tour! György/George was our guide, and his knowledge of Budapest's history/details was such a cool addition to the tour (which is also a great way to get geographically acquainted with the Pest side of the city). The food was *incredible* and George gave us cultural context and background for each dish we ate. We had plenty of time to enjoy each stop, the pace was comfortable for my older in-laws, and there were restrooms in the restaurants we stopped at along the way. Honestly, even though the food was amazing, my favorite part was getting insight into the city, its history (both ancient and more recent), and getting to pick up a few Hungarian phrases along the way. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who likes local food and facts!

This food tour was absolutely fantastic. Having experienced food tours in various cities before, I love starting my trips with them because they provide great insights into the food, culture, and the city itself. This tour was no exception!
George was an amazing tour guide. He taught me so much about Hungarian cuisine and shared fascinating stories about Budapest. We stopped at several famous landmarks, so if you only have time for one type of tour, I highly recommend this one. You get the best of both worlds: delicious food and rich knowledge.
I would definitely recommend this tour!

We had an absolutely fabulous time on Zoltan’s Secret Food tour of Budapest. Zoltan’s knowledge of Budapest’s history and his openness in recounting his personal experiences made us feel a part of the city and that we had found a new friend. He was both interesting and entertaining to listen to. We loved trying all the different traditional foods particularly the langos. No one could have left hungry as the portions were generous. We’ll definitely be looking for more food tours like this in future and we highly recommend Zoltan’s tour to anyone visiting Budapest.

The walking tour aspect was good, Zoltan was a very humorous and informative guide with lots of stories from his own life growing up in Hungary, which were very interesting. If you don’t know there’s a 27% sales tax in Hungary by the end, which by all accounts is questionably paid, you can’t have given the tour any attention!!
The food itself - we tried two types of strudel, coffee, lángos, goulash and some potato and sausage casserole. These were all decent & on a par with other local restaurants, except I thought the lángos which was very good. It was probably the least amount of food variety I’ve ever had on a food tour - although the nature of the food and portions served is very heavy and filling, so you will nonetheless be stuffed by the end. I personally would have liked to try smaller portions of more things, as to me that’s what a food tour usually involves, but that’s just my preference.
There was wine available to taste, but only if you paid 6000 F extra directly in cash. One small alcoholic drink was included each otherwise.

The start of the day was heavy rain and we were not sure if the tour would go ahead , although we used the message service on the app multiple time we had no reply. Eventually the rain eased off and we decided to go to the meeting point at the specified time.
After the uneasy start the tour guide arrived on time ( Zoltan) and everything went very well.
Zoltan is obviously passionate about his roots and the country he loves and this came across in the enthusiastic way he spoke about the history and the present day ( a million word per minute)😊
The food was ok but Zoltan made the experience very informative and thought provoking.

FANTASTIC TOUR!!! We learned so much about Hungary and the people, and especially the food! Every food stop was top notch and gave us a great sampling of the best Hungarian food. We were impressed with everything. By the end we were more than satisfied with the quality and amount of food that we sampled. Zoltan was absolutely the best tour guide. His knowledge and passion for teaching people about Hungary made this the best food tour we have ever taken, and we have done three other cities previously. I recommend Secret Food Tours to anyone looking for a great introduction to food in whatever city you are visiting.

On some food tours we have done, the amount of food we sampled was essentially a full meal! Is this the case with this tour? This is not a problem for us - we just want to plan accordingly! Thanks!

YES! We were surprised by how much food was offered, like a full goulash stew. It is more than a tasting tour. We loved it.

Do you offer tours after lunch as well or only at the set hour?
Written October 3, 2019
Yes! Most tours have a group of people so you are not the only one and part of the fun is meeting new people. We were the only two on the Budapest tour but most food tours we were on there were more people. There are always at least one or two solo travelers. By the end of the tour you really know eachother! Enjoy!
