  • Your day trip will begin with pickup from your central Budapest hotel. Alongside your knowledgeable guide, begin the journey to the southern wine region of Villány. Enjoy a background on the history of Hungarian wine as you venture through the scenic route, and learn the effects of the area's sub-Mediterranean climate on its robust red wines. As this is a private tour, your guide can tailor the itinerary to your preferences, if you wish. Upon arrival, embark on a comprehensive tour of the region with visits to three select wineries. Stop: 8 hours
Begin your private tour with a pickup from your central Budapest hotel and meet your wine-expert guide. Then, relax aboard your private air-conditioned minivan as you travel to Villány, a scenic wine region in south Hungary. As you travel, listen to fun facts about Hungarian wine, and learn how Villány’s sub-Mediterranean climate is key to producing robust red wines in its 11 winemaking villages. We'll visit three wineries, giving you a taste of the region’s traditional, experimental and modern styles. Take a vineyard walk to see the grapes close up, and at each winery, sample between five and eight samples of wine. Between wineries, see some of Villány’s wine villages, including its traditional whitewashed wine cellars. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant. The venue and its menu may change, but lunch typically includes staples such as a hearty broth and a roast followed by strudel. At the last winery, complement your tasting with tasty local cheese and meat.

Villány in style!
We did the same itinerary as that expertly reviewed by Mark S a couple of days after him and wholly endorse his review. We came away with wonderful reds from all three establishments plus an amazing toasty/toffee oaked Chardonnay from Jackfall.

You’ll need a driver anyway because Hungary has a 0 alcohol limit for drivers and you can’t possibly walk the distances involved - particularly if, like us, you want to wander around the vineyards themselves. So why not engage the excellent and vastly knowledgeable Taste Hungary team (represented on this occasion by Gábor and Endre)?

The favourite part of the trip was the chance to discover new wineries in an area that we have not previously visited, with a fantastic guide (Gabor) who has both an engaging personality and huge knowledge of the wines we will encounter as well as being a great conduit between us and the vineyard owners.
We were to visit 3 different establishments, the first and third were wineries and the second a Resturant owned by a famous wine maker from the area. The first was a wonderful small winery in the countryside called Riczu - hosted by Aggie, the wine makers wife - here Gabor was essential as she only spoke in Hungarian, though she was very easy to follow through the passion that she clearly had for all of her wines and there were many things that we could follow even before Gabor had translated them for us.
A selections of wine were presented to us ranging from the: Classic collection, to the Premium collection and then finally the Super-Premium collection (which were medal winning wines from a number of prestigious competitions including the Decanter.
The wines at the restaurant were paired with the food beautifully and were a real showcase for their wines, the Gere Kopar was the highlight for me.
The final winery was called Jackfall, quite simply we could have stayed there all evening talking about their wines, you could have very easily come away from them with one of everything. As it was we left with 3 wines the headline was the 2007 Grand.
None of this would have been made possible without the easy charm and knowledge of Gabor, he interjected with assistance when required was happy to join in the general banter and always felt part of the group.
We were really amazed at the range of wines on offer, we went expecting only to find Red wine on offer and were treated to some great whites and Roses, the skill of the wine makers of this region is beyond doubt.
A real wine lovers treat, though not for the faint hearted, be prepared to have real sized tastings of all of the wines which for us reached 20!
