- paulmT544ZP0 contributionsAmazing tour of Vienna countryside wine.We had a fantastic time on our tour in Vienna. Tamas and Paulo were great hosts and took us to try some amazing wine and food. Met some wonderful people and even got an exclusive peek at some exquisite collections in the secret cellars. Loved every minute of it. We will definitely be going again next time In Vienna and will be trying the tour in Budapest next time we are there too, as we were gutted we didn’t realise there was a Budapest tour available while we were there already. Highly recommend.Written March 30, 2024

- karsevgab0 contributionsAMAZING Wine Tour Experience! Trip Highlight! We had an absolutely great time with Julianna on our half-day tour to the Etyek wine region, just outside Budapest. It was definitely one of the highlights of our entire trip and one of the best decisions! I highly debated booking this tour, as I wasn't sure what our day to day itinerary was going to look like in Budapest and didn't feel like we had enough time to commit to a full day trip, but definitely wanted to see something outside of the city. My family is very much into wine, and thought this would be a good topic! The tour was simply fantastic! Julianna drove us to Etyek while giving us a very thorough and interesting history/culture lesson on Budapest and Hungary, throughout the different centuries all linked to the wine production and legacy of the region. It helped solidify some of the history knowledge we've been picking up, while adding really interesting facts and cool twist! Once in Etyek, we got to visit, chat, learn and sample from family wine producers on a very intimate and unique setting! We visited Nádas wine workshop and Anonym winery. I've done wine tasting and tours before, but have never done anything quite like this... it felt very personal, unique and the winemakers were all so candid and open to share everything about their own personal story and wine production, we learned tons! we also tasted exquisite wines!! We usually gravitate towards reds, but the wines we tried (from this mainly white-wine region) basically made converts of all of us! :) We ended the evening at a small family run winery/restaurant, Debreczeni-Ferenczi winery, with a fantastic dinner and chat with a lovely local family, we simply had a blast. We left the tour full, wine-happy and with a new local friend! Julianna - we'll definitely be in touch whenever we are back in the area, thank you soooo much for a fantastic experience!!! One additional note - I didn't book this trip until fairly last minute, maybe 2 days before. During our trip, I realized how much coordination effort goes behind the scenes for them to set up the visits and dinner with the winemakers and for them to be able to align their schedule and planning, specially during the low season when they might not be running the tours that often. I felt bad about booking so last minute and really appreciated everyone's efforts to make it work, but would kindly suggest/ask that you consider this and try to book as early as possible.Written February 20, 2020
- mrswright19850 contributionsA brilliant tripA great trip from the start. Friendly and knowledgable host. Truley delicious chocolate paired with fantastic wine and an incredibly tasty lunch. What's not to like! It was my husbands birthday and he got a candle in his desert which was a great nice touch. I would recommend this tripWritten January 29, 2020
- Lynn J0 contributionsHighlight of BudapestThis was such a delightful experience. Our tour guide, Julianna, was absolutely amazing. We were a group of different nationals which made this even more interesting. As a solo traveler, this was a great way to meet new people. You simply MUST sign up for this tour when in the region. So much wine, food, laughs and memories to last a lifetime.Written January 7, 2020

- Adraper690 contributionsA Must Do Excursion to get the Best out of BudapestWe spent a gorgeous sunny afternoon driving out from Budapest to the Etyek wine region, approximately 30 mins out of town. Our first experience was tasting hand made chocolates paired with white and red wines. This takes place in the kitchen at the owner’s house in the village of Etyek. Our host was great and explained the intricacies of the art of chocolate making. You can even have a go at making bonbons. Bars of chocolate and bonbons are available for purchase and come beautifully packaged. They make excellent gifts but there is no pressure to buy whatsoever. We then proceeded to a nearby vineyard where we tasted more of the local wines in a wonderful purpose built visitor centre with views out over the hills. To finish off the day we went to another nearby vineyard and Bed and Breakfast where the owner provided more wine for us to sample followed by a traditional 2 course Hungarian meal. We enjoyed a delicious game stew of Venison and Wild Boar, freshly hunted by the host and prepared by his wife. This was followed by a sour cherry strudel. They will happily cater for any dietary requests as long as you tell your guide so they can have some notice. Thank You to Louis, our driver for taking good care of us. Thank You especially to our charming guide Margaret, who was very informative and, most of all, great fun. There was much laughter and that really made the trip great. All in all we were away over 5 hours. It was a memorable trip and a wonderful way to meet and spend time with local people. Most interactions are with hotel staff or waiters! It was also great to get outside the city and see some beautiful countryside.Written October 30, 2019
- Kashyap P0 contributionsPerfect eveningThis was a great tour by Michael, we were picked up from our hotel in Vienna and we explored the vineyards nearby Vienna( outside the city unlike it’s name ), all the vineyard hosts were wonderful and had some of the best wines I have tasted. Dinner was also excellent and so was our evening with our amazing, knowledgable and funny guide Michael, he added the feather to the cap! 😄Written October 29, 2019
- 515bluec0 contributionsHighlight of our tripLoved the wine tour, which was a cosy group size (about 6 of us). It was an interesting visit to family run, small sized operations. Wine servings were also really generous-- we had about 9 glasses in total. The lunch served was homemade and really good. The guide picked us up at 10am and we were back at 2 pm.Written October 21, 2019
- Julie G0 contributionsBest Experience of our Danube Region TripThis was just a lovely day. My review will probably not do this justice. Our excellent and friendly driver/host (Julianna) picked us up at our hotel. We collected the other adventurers on our tour (8 of us in total) and off we went to Etyek. We had selected the Chocolate tasting and decided to make it a Lunch tour (Dinner is also offered). We were taken to the Gingallo Chocolaterie in a cute little home. Viktoria, the owner, was so gracious, and provided us with an excellent lesson all about chocolates and the real way to taste chocolate, especially with wine. We even got to make some special truffles. The crew came back for us and we were shuttled to an amazing family vineyard nearby for more tastings and lunch. The family was very hospitable, the wine was perfectly paired, and the food was like your favorite Aunt cooked it. We laughed and had a great time with our fellow travellers from the US, Australia and Scandinavia. Julianna, our host and guide, was delightful. Her energy was infectious and her knowledge was truly appreciated. We like to take unique tours while we travel. We prefer to be in smaller groups and this was one of our favorite days of our 2 week trip to the Danube region. We left with the gift of great memories and some amazingly delicious chocolate. We highly recommend this excursion.Written September 24, 2019
- Aldie B0 contributionsWine tour - disorganizedWe were really looking forward to this wine tour, but must say that we were extremely disappointed. The communication and logistics were a real issue. We were told we'd hear 48 hours before the trip was to start as to where they could pick us up and to confirm that the trip was on. We heard nothing and so I e-mailed several times and heard nothing. We ended up calling Trip Advisor back in the U.S. - Viator - and that person tried to reach the tour operator, and we ended up reaching their Budapest folks and did not have success with confirmation. So that was a wasted 30 minute phone call back to the U.S. and I can't wait to see that phone bill on my cell bill! I CANCELLED the trip, even though I was told I'd have to pay anyway, and I asked the Trip Advisor person to reverse that. After I cancelled the trip, we went out to enjoy the day. That evening, we DID receive confirmation that the tour was still on for the next afternoon and to please consider re-joining the tour. Since we DID want to go on the trip, we said "okay" and they were to pick us up right by our apartment the next day. The driver, Seth, was a great guy (spoke fluent English or German) and we enjoyed him very much. The pick ups were very disorganized, however (from the home office) and we ended up, with traffic, spending over an hour just picking people up - after leaving the city, Seth received a call, and he had to go back into the city to pick up another couple. Because of this wasted time, we only had time for 2 visits (not 3, as promised). The single vineyard we visited was lovely and we enjoyed our allotted tastings; we were also allowed to pick a free bottle to bring back with us, due to all the delays. The second/final stop was for dinner, where we were also served an assortment of wines. Overall a very disappointing tour and I would not recommend, considering the cost. This was also our first trip on TripAdvisor and I was very diappointed - too many middle-men. I would not book another trip again.Written September 15, 2019
- heidisusanna0 contributionsBest wine tourWe had the best time on this tour, thanks to our host Julianna. She was amazing and so was our small group. All the vineyards we visited were different and very cool. Out of all the wines there was only one I didn't like too much. Booking was easy and effortless and pickup was also on time.Written August 30, 2019

- mattsummers19860 contributionsGreat fun and educationalWe were the only ones who did the chocolate tasting but it was great. There was wine with the chocolate and it was very interesting. The dinner was really nice and of course came with more wine. The hosts were very entertaining. Hungarian wine is pretty good if you ask me but hard to come by outside of the country as they can't make enough for themselves. So buy whilst you are there but watch your baggage weight limit.Written August 7, 2019
- Alisolsen0 contributionsPleasant afternoonI was a little concerned that there were so few reviews for this trip but decided to book on the basis that it was going to be a small group tour. Confirmation of exact pick up location and time didn't come through till the evening before we were due to go on the trip but Jennifer was very helpful and when she said she would confirm by a certain time, she did. Our driver, Seth, was punctual and friendly. This was his first time visiting some of the stops on the itinerary so there was, at times, a reliance on satnav. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't actually a tour of a vineyard, this is more of a winetasting tour and one stop was more of a bar/restaurant/wine merchant. Overall, the wine was good, the food was good and the company (6 from USA, 2 from Scotland and Seth) was interesting and friendly. Weingut Pfaffl was by the far the best stop on the itinerary. The guide clearly had a passion for her work and the wine was exceptionally good.Written August 7, 2019

We met outside a centrally located motel and drove to three small wineries...family run, 10,000 bottle enterprises. We got a great overview and talk at each one, and FOUR "tastes". These tastes were like San Fran pours....3 or 4 ounces!!! Glad we had a driver. Our group of about 15 all got along and we had lots of fun and laughs, plus we learned a lot and bought great bottles of wine for less than $10!! Our checked bags coming back were quite heavy. Great tour! Oh..and the meal was a wonderful, family style dinner. We would do it again for sure.

The wine country just outside of Budapest was charming and filled with rich wines that are really coming into their own. The vineyard owners were extremely knowledgeable and proud to share how their wine journeys have been evolving. Our guide, Peter, was fantastic and also extremely knowledgeable about the area wines. Thanks to our wonderful Hungarian hosts!

This wine tour was amazing! The gentleman who took us around was very passionate about wines and knew about the winery's we were going to and the wine district of Etyek! The individual winerys made us feel so welcome and gave us a tour of the wine cellars in each. They gave us an insite of their own winery's and the ideas behind them. The 1st told us about the reason the wines we're named. The 2nd was so passionate about being individual and was so unique in their ideas! They don't focus on making 2 wines the same but focus on each wines individuality. And the food in the 3rd was so lovely. We're so glad we did this!! Also the wines tasted amazing and we just had to buy a couple in each!!

Esther was a fantastic host she gave us an intimate tour of Etyek, i was nice to step out of the city and experience the real Hungarian culture, meet the locals and visit the wineries. The tour was engaging, educational and above all fun! 3 vineyards and (I think!) 14 taster wines which were generous. I would do this tour again and again.
Any question you have just ask Esther and she will accommodate. There is an option to buy bottles at the vineyards but absolutely 0 pressure to do so. Also the door to door service was a lovely touch.

I wish I could rate this even higher. This trip gave us a great trip into the country, only a 30 min drive away, but into a small village outside the big city. The hills and valleys are very picturesque and meeting the winemakers at each stop was a huge plus. Szilard, the wine maker at Nadas was a wonderful host, sharing not just about the wine but a little history of the wine industry and this growing region. His wines were high quality and we bought as much as we could reasonably carry/drink on our trip. Our second stop at Buzal-morocza included lunch at a picturesque spot at the top of the lane. The courtyard is picture perfect and the wine along with the some local dishes was really good. Peter was a fabulous guide, he helped us understand the wines but also the local culture and some of Hungaries history. All in all our most highly recommended tour!

A fantastic afternoon with Tamas our guide to three independent producers who create wine for the local market only. Very different from other visits I've experienced. The third stop included a wonderful home cooked dinner along with the wine! We tasted excellent wine at all three venues. Highly Recommend this tour.

Fabulous 1/2 tour with Peter. This tour provided a personal view of wine making in Hungary and Peter himself was involved in the industry for many years before becoming a tour guide with City Wine. This team was accommodating to pickup location and time. This is a must tour just outside of Budapest in the country side.

Would highly recommend this tour to anybody who likes wine and culture. We had a small group just two couples and a tour guide who was absolutely amazing. she gave us a tour on the way to etyek and then took us to three incredible vineyards including her sisters so it felt like she invited us to spend the night with her family which was so welcoming. Had great wine, great food and even better company.

There really IS more to the Budapest area than City Center! While the pick up process seemed disorganized, going out to the hilly Etyek wine country was a fun, educational, delicious, and memorable experience.
You can read all the articles you can find on the art of wine making, but you can't appreciate the hundreds of years old process in Hungary until you go into the ages old cellars built deep into the countryside.
We went to three different vintners, with very different venues, and each with their own offering of their wines. The first stop was a rustic cellar neatly set up with cheerful tables to taste several wine offerings and traditional Hungarian bread with cheese spread. We were then invited to go back into the area where the wine aged in wooden barrels and we sampled the wine the vintner drew up. Very cool!
The 2nd venue was a very modernized cellar with a banquet-length table. The vintner was quite engaging and had a great sense of humor with our fairly large (and often quite noisy) group. As he shared their wine sampling, he also shared his impressive knowledge of wine making and Hungarian history.
The last venue was at an enclosed outdoor venue, where we sampled more wine, and ate a 3 course traditional Hungarian country meal. Nothing fancy, but tasty and filling. The vintner was especially knowledgeable and gregarious.
A wonderful way to enjoy a different view of Budapest and taste many of the lovely varieties of wine Hungary has produced for centuries.

If i book the private tour for me and my wife would your driver just take the two of us? or is two people to small of a group?
Written August 30, 2022
They take however many people have booked and adjust the vehicle size to match the size of the group. This is a popular trip, so I would think it is rare that they have to transport only two people. Their communication was very good with us, so I suspect they will advise a different time slot if two people are uneconomical

It seems like each stop we encountered there was some limited gluten free options. However, my suggestion would be to carry your own. There are many places to pick up some good snacks (for cheap) in town. Hey..the wine was wonderful!!
