  • Step inside one of Europe's most famous synagogues
  • Visit a Holocaust memorial and hear stories from World War II

What to expect
  • Your tour will begin at the Dohány street Synagogue, where your local guide will meet you. As you walk through the city streets, you’ll hear about the Jewish community in Budapest, both past and present. Essential Tour: This option offers a concise route for travelers on a stricter schedule. The Essential Tour will begin with a step inside the biggest synagogue in Europe, the Dohány Street Synagogue. While inside you’ll explore the Jewish Museum, which hosts an impressive exhibit of pieces from Hungarian and Eastern European artists. Your guide will then take you to Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park, named for the man credited with saving the lives of thousands in the Jewish community. You’ll pass through the old Jewish Quarter, once a ghetto during the Second World War, as well as Heroes’ Temple, which pays homage to lives lost during WWI. Grand Tour: For a more comprehensive option, choose the Grand Tour, which picks up where the Essential Tour leaves off. You’ll make your way to the Jewish Quarter, where kosher bakeries and restaurants are located, along with other synagogues and memorials. Admire the Gozsdu Courtyard, an old passageway currently converted into bustling bars and restaurants and popular with locals and visitors alike. You’ll also visit Carl Lutz Memorial Park, named after another famous figurehead during WWII, as well as the Rumbach Street Synagogue. After a stop at the center of the orthodox community, the Kazinczy Street Synagogue, you’ll pause for some sweets at the kosher Frohlich Bakery and Café. You’ll also be given a 10% discount by your guide to the kosher restaurant, Carmel, to be enjoyed later in the evening on your own if you wish.

Very interesting
Dec 2019 • Couples
A very interesting tour of the Grand Synagogue, not the whole Jewish quarter, as we thought, for which you need the’Grand tour’. It didn’t matter as we then followed our own noses which was fine.
Dorina, the guide, was very good

First rate fascinating tour
Our guide Daniel was brilliant. He did not rush us through the museum so we could enjoy the guided tour there. He gave us a comprehensive background and history of the Jewish people in Hungary over the last 5 centuries up to date. We visited the main synagogue, the cemetery and the wonderful tree of remembrance. We learnt about the people who save Jewish lives, namely raul wallenberg and Nicholas Winton, and looked at the glorious stained glass panel. We walked through the Jewish quarter to another very different synagogue before visiting a bakery and trying some traditional Jewish cakes (very formidable).
All in all a very fascinating day with a very knowledgeable engaging guide.
Worth the extra to do it properly.

Thank you Daniel.

This was an eye-opening experience. Very well done tour balancing the history and beauty of the Great Synagogue with the horrors of the Nazi era and the tragedies that occurred there.

Beautiful site with many interesting historical facts
Oct 2019
The site is very popular and many groups gathered at 10:00am.
It would be better if the schedule of groups was stretched out over the day instead of having so many people all at once in the morning.
Our guide in the museum was fabulous--very informative and moving presentation. Our guide in the synagogue was hard to hear and understand some of the points she was making. It should be emphasized with some direction to see the exhibition in the basement. It took us 30 min. to find it!!

Oct 2019
This was a fantastic tour. Erica our tour guide was really knowledgeable and was excellent in explaining the history of the various places we visited. We saw the Dohany synagogue, the museum in the synagogue, the memorial garden, the orthodox synagogue and the wall of the ghetto. We did the grand tour which ended with cake and coffee. Highly recommend.

Walk, Learn and Experience Jewish History
Oct 2019
This was by the far one of the best walking tours my husband and I have been on. This was mostly due to our guide, Daniel, who was extremely knowledgeable, very articulate and entertaining. We went on the expanded tour which we would highly recommend. The tour starts at the Dohany Street Synagogue and Museum. From there you will visit a another synagogue, the sanctuary, memorials, experience the holocaust through their eyes, walk the Jewish quarters, including the ruins, and for a sweet ending taste some delicious Jewish treats at the Froehlich Bakery. A very special thanks to Daniel for such an enjoyable day. Wendy and Richard Hasselman (USA-California)

Budapest tours
Sep 2019
Jewish Heritage Walking Tour was a real highlight of our wonderful visit to Budapest. The tour is a great short version of the long history of Jewish life in central Europe. The good, the bad to horrible times that is their history. It really opened our minds to learn more about the Holy Roman Empire and the city of Budapest.
The guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to carefully answer our questions. Especially for ones not well versed on the Torah and rabbinical law and how it reflects on every day life in the community.

Very good tour showcasing past and present Jewish life in Budapest
Sep 2019
My husband and I went on th expanded version of this tour on a Sunday. That was the first day we could do it. My advice is to do it Monday-Thursday. Since the tour doesn't run on Saturday (Shabbat) it was very crowded on Sunday. The synagogue was packed with tourists. Our group was even larger than it was suppose to be but we managed all right. Barbi was our guide. She isn't Jewish but her husband is and she was very knowledgeable. We started at the musuem at the synagogue before going into the sanctuary itself. Then we went outside in the courtyard to see different memorials to the victims of the holocaust while we heard the story of the Hungarian Jews during that time. We then went by another synagogue under renovation and then walked around the neighborhood. We ended up at another Orthodox synagogue and went inside. I've never seen an Orthodox synagogue in the US decorated like this one with bright colors and tile work. We finished off the grand tour at a kosher restaurant where we had drinks and a dessert called flodni which consists of apples, walnuts, poppy seeds and jam. It was delicious. I would recommend the tour this tour highly.
