About
In this exploration of Tito's Socialist Yugoslavia, which Slovenia was a part of, communist gems come to life, including typical architecture, Coca Cola's communist factories, socialist punk music and Luka Dončič's basketball predecessors. Comparing the Communist past and Capitalist present, the tour shows the influence of communism and workers’ self-management on today’s life in Slovenia. It showcases amazing examples of Yugo-nostalgia, cult of personality, brutalist architecture, the "spomenik" monuments, attitude towards religion, censorship and the secret police jail. Yugoslavia’s type of Communism was unique in the world, and this tour tries to do it justice.

This tour was one of the highlights of my visit to Ljubljana. The tour guide, Gregor, is knowledgeable, humorous and engaging. The stories behind the history of Slovenia’s past helps one remember and his ability to explain and answer any question I had was great. I highly recommend this tour to get information you don’t get in your general tours and to see a part of Slovenia you might not have known still exists and see how the past influences the present.

Excellent tour with Gregor
Aug 2020
I booked the post-communist tour with Ptich and my guide Gregor was amazing.
Before the tour we were in touch via e-mail and Gregor organized this tour as a special tour for me which was great.
Being really interested in communism, I have participated in quite some communist tours so far and this has by far been the most personal tour.
Gregor introduced himself and his gave some information on his background and was interested in the participants (in this case me) and my background and kind of tailored the tour not only to the post-communist aspect but also to fit the personal interest which I really enjoyed.
Gregor was very knowledgeable about the Yugoslavian area and brought up a lot of interesting details.
Also Gregor brought along some really interesting books and showed a video on his mobile phone, both really completed the tour.
The tour didn’t feel like a guide showing you a city, it felt more like a friend showing you his backyard, which was really nice.
I very much enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend choosing Ptich for your Ljubljana tour. I really like their choice of special tours, like a punk music walk or an alternative tour, which all sound pretty interesting.

Dear DanyT23, thank you so much for your amazing review and recommendation of the tour. It's been a pleasure walking with you around Ljubljana and getting to know you. It's always memorable to do the tour with someone who's been so interested in the (post-)Communist issues as yourself. All the best to you! Greg

A tour that arms you with the knowledge to impress your friends
Jul 2020
We were in Ljubljana for 24 hours but didn't want to do the classic one-size-fits-all "Free walking tour". I was interested in the history of Yugoslavia, and specifically Slovenia's place in it, so when I read the description of the Post-Communist Tour there was no hesitation in booking it. And indeed, the tour turned out exactly the way we had wanted it. Gregor tailor's it to your interests, provides ample historical context to Slovenia's place in Yugoslavia and gives you an insight into the Slovenian psyche that no free tour about 'dragons' ever would. The walk around Ljubljana gave life to it's Communist past. Can't recommend enough.

One if the Highlights of My Balkan Journey
Jan 2020
Lidija was the leader of our group of one on a a very cold morning. She was extremely knowledgable and provided personal and professional insights into Communist Yugoslavia and post-communist Slovania. She tailored the tour to our shared interests (particularly art, architecture; politics) and enabled a very clear understanding of life during and after Tito's Yugoslavia. This was a highlight of my 5 weeks' travels across the Balkans and is highly, highly recommended. Lidija also set me up well for an afternoon of individual exploration before catching the evening train to Zagreb. Lidija was excellent, considerate company: a delight!!

Fascinating and Informative Tour by Gregor
Sep 2019
On our recent visit to Ljubljana, four of us (me, my wife and her brorher and sister-in-law) all greatly enjoyed the Post – Communist walking tour. Our tour guide was Gregor, who was very informed and informative and interesting and who took the time to learn our interests and knowledge and then tailored the tour to our needs and wants. Gregor gave all of us a good base understanding ot the lengthy and complex history of Slovenia before WW I and a detailed understanding of life and politics after that especially during the period in which Slovenia was a part of the unified Yugoslavia. Beyond dong an excellent job of presenting this fascinating history and tying it to the urban landscape. Gregor put up with our unending stream of questions and fully engaged us all for the full duration of the tour. We all left the tour raving about how great a tour it had been and talking and thinking about the many issues and points to which Gregor had introduced us to. I personally had visited Yugoslavia in the mid 1980's as a young man and had thought I had then been aware of the history of Yugoslavia and its political place in the world at the time. After the tour, I realized how little I had actually then known and understood about that era and that country at the time. Overall, we all believed that this was one of the best tours any of us had taken. I highly recommend this tour and, in particular, Gregor as the tour guide.

Very interesting tour with Greg
Sep 2019
I visited the former Yugoslavia over forty years ago so being my first time back since I was very interested to see what remained of the old regime and how things had changed. Greg goes to great lengths to estabish what you would like to know about how Slovenis had been impacted by the recent changes and guides you seamlessly around Ljubljana. The two hours passed very quickly and left me feeling that I knew a lot more than when I started. If you want to know more than the standard large group walking tours then this is the tour for you and to be honest the cost really isn't that much more. Keep up the good work Greg.

Great tour! A crash course in the 20th century history and culture of Ljubljana, Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia, focusing on the post war communist era under Tito. If you're interested in the periods during, between and after the world wars (leading up to today), this is a must do. Gregor is a true expert. He keeps it relevant, interactive and fun.

Post communist walking tour
Sep 2019 • Couples
This was our final day of vacation and we wanted to learn a bit more of the history. We were the only two on the tour and Greg catered it to our interests and energy level. We were able to see places we never would have found on our own and learn about the changes that have taken place in the last century. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in the political and historical side of Ljubljana.

Great find! Learnt so much.
The tour guide was very accommodating and generous with our group: we accidentally booked for the wrong date but he was happy to move our booking around with no added fees or inconveniences.
It was also very appreciated that the guide assessed every participants individual interests and levels of knowledge when the tour began to ensure we were able to keep up with such a complex history.
As a traveller, I can find it very easy to become really bored and disengaged with the flood of audio guides at museums - this tour is one hundred times better than those! Part of the reason for this was the guides ability to add art, historical objects, music, food, architecture and Slovenian culture into a history tour - this made the experience richer and felt more like a two way conversation than a lecture.
Really great find and a fast way to fill your mind with loads of compelling stories about Slovenia and her people.
