        Can do at age 81!
Well worth the trip to the Salt Mine. I definitely recommend the hotel pick up - I even changed my hotel reservation to one that was on the pick up list. Since we were not going on the rest of the trip to the concentration camp, the tour leader arranged for a taxi back to our hotel. Although I had been wary of the steps down, they were easy to do with great railings and steps. It's a long walk through the mine, but the trail is straightforward, the pace and with places to sit down, it was manageable for me at 81.

        Brilliant Choose Cracow
Absolutely brilliant experience from Choose Cracow. The booking had to be changed due to availability at Auschwitz and Christopher went above and beyond to ensure we still got to visit this extremely moving and historic location. The tour guide was superb - passionate, knowledgable and really bought to life the atrocities that occurred there. Our driver Alex was excellent at communicating with us about pick ups and what the format would be. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Yes this must never be allowed not to be told
Most have heard and saw some of the awful events that were carried out in these places but to see and get more of the real story and experience the horror that was dealt out to human beings by other would be humans is so hard to believe and accept.

        An incredible day
This was an amazing excursion. In retrospect it was too much for us in one day but it was a day to remember. The Salt Mines are spectacular (a great deal of walking both up and down!). Auschwitz and Birkenau are places which I feel we should all visit in the hopes that this atrocity will never happen again and to pay our respects to all the millions of people who suffered there. The guides are extremely empathetic and informative and we came away so very humbled.

        Brilliant
Martin our driver was brilliant. Both the salt mine and Auschwitz Berkenau tours were fantastic. Highly recommended. Ensure you have comfy shoes, take a packed lunch if possible, there is a cafe at Auschwitz.

        Fascinating and eye opening
We booked our tour through viator and our tour operator was “Choose Cracow”. Pick up was on time outside of our apartment and transport to auschwitz was comfortable (I slept most of the way there). There was a video to watch during the journey to give an insight into auschwitz which was interesting but I’m not an early morning person so must admit I didn’t manage to watch it all! Our tour guide was great and spoke clear english and was really informative with individual stories you don’t get from reading the boards. Only grumble is the static through the headphones but these were given to us by the counter at auschwitz so not to tour operators fault really. I was in two minds whether to do a tour or go on our own but as we were only in Kraków for a short time and wanted ease of transport, we went with a tour. I’m glad I did now. I had heard that the tours were rushed which is slightly true however, there are so many tour groups there that even those not in a group were encouraged to pass allowing others to view areas. I didn’t feel like it took away from my experience and came away feeling like I’d seen everything I wanted to. We went to both camps. Unfortunately the main entrance was not available to see when we went as it was being prepared for the anniversary of the liberation on the 27th January. We then were given packed lunches which was nice as I didn’t realise lunch was included and we then made our way to the salt mine. Personally I would have preferred to have eaten in the coach to save time, But I understand keeping the minibus clean and also this would not be to everyone’s taste. We then made the journey to the salt mine which was around an hour and a half, again I slept most of the way there. We got tea/coffee and then went into our tour group and made our way down the 370 odd steps! The guide was very funny and informative. Try licking the walls! It was a long day but well worth it if you only have a short time in Kraków. There were plenty of breaks and rest opportunities and we didn't get home too late. The mini bus driver dropped us off where we wanted also. Very good day!!

        Unfortunate weather caused chaos.
We headed to Auschwitz and were told Black ice had caused several bad falls, one broken leg, one broken back! Camp was closed until later, we qued for 2.5 hours. Whilst waiting we were told they would give us the cold weather tour to get us back on track with timings but Birkenau was not opening so we would just visit to see the entrance then lunch and salt mines. We had the full tour then were told we wouldn't be going to Birkenau and wouldn't be stopping for lunch but the cafe was open and we had ten minutes to get something from the cafe. The cafe was a kiosk that had crisps chocolate and a few pastries, being sugar intolerant that was really disappointing. The salt mine was however excellent and that on it's own was great, the rest I would rather forget.

        Great experience
Everything went smooth from the start, excellent communication, nice people, good tour guide. Transportation to the mines was right on time. (They send us a message the day before what time the pick up would be). Pleasant ride, everything was explained very clearly. We expected the mines to be cold but it was actually relatively warm in the mines. The mine itself was very nice, sculptures are amazing, the electronic tour guide system worked pretty good. Information was very clear and informative. The elevator back to the surface was very interesting ;) Thanks for arranging the tour Also Christopher is a very nice guy.

Rating the booking of this trip 5* as it was so easy to just book the trip and pay the money for them to sort everything for us. Our driver collected each party from their hotels, organised an English speaking tour guide (who was very informative and was passionate about this peice of polish history), booked all tickets for salt mine/Auschwitz & birkenau. Very Comfortable and upto date minibus.
There is a restaurant at Auschwitz entrance to buy lunch at very reasonable prices and some shops inside the gates for food/drink/books etc.
A great trip to see the history of what is such an unbelievable place... Take your tissues!!

Most of the people who are considering participating in this tour are probably travelers who are staying in the city of Krakow. While the salt pans are easy to get to on your own (one bus ride for 4.40 PLN), the hurdle to visiting Auschwitz is extremely high. This tour offers travelers who do not have the time the opportunity to visit the two points in an efficient manner. I was very impressed with the guides, especially the Polish female guide at Auschwitz.
For travelers who can afford the time, the Auschwitz-only tour may be more recommended.

If you are in the area, both these tours are a must!

I think it is best to do both in one day, to allow you to spend more time in Krakow.

The day is fairly full on & engaging, you can expect to be picked up at 8am and dropped back in Krakow approx 5:30pm-7:00pm depending on traffic and tour capacity. Lots of walking!

The Salt Mine Tour takes just under 2 hours and offers some spectacular areas/churches & statues carved from salt rock. It is followed by a 1.5 hour drive to Auschwitz-Birkenau and we spent about 3 hours there in total. It is a very educational experience and it will give you a further understanding of the atrocities committed there. I believe that it is important to attend and learn about the past mistakes & to pay respects to the victims of the Holocaust.

Choose Cracow were brilliant hosts and I would recommend booking through them. They will contact you by WhatsApp the evening before to confirm pick up times. Tomas/Martin offered a very professional service and they had a thorough understanding of the tour & programme. They also offered a packed lunch service for 30 Zloty, which can be eaten on the drive - as during the winter due to the earlier closing times, it is not possible to stop for a lunch break.

Fantastic Tour. Choose Cracow provided very detailed and clear information regarding the tour and pick up time etc. We were collected on time and Peter explained the days and timings. We were taken to the Salt Mine first and our guide was excellent, really informative and the lady (unfortunately I cannot remember her name) had personal connections with the mine so her knowledge and they way she delivered the tour was amazing. Paid 30 Zloty for lunch bag, which included sandwich, fruit, croissant and wafer biscuit and some water, would recommend purchasing as there isn't really a lot of food / beverages available. Auschwitz-Birkenau was around an hour and 20 min drive away. Again a very good tour, delivered with compassion and empathy. Lots of walking involved in both tours. An excellent day trip and would highly recommend.

Great communication the day before telling me exactly what time I was going to be picked up by the bus. Bus was comfortable with AC. Tour guide on the bus didn’t actually talk to us about anything we were seeing, was more of a facilitator getting our tickets and making sure we were all at the tour/back on bus before transferring to next activity. We had separate tour guides at the salt mines and Auschwitz/Birkenau.

Personally for me I could have skipped the salt mines as they were beautiful but didn’t get a lot of great information on the tour I couldn’t look up online. Maybe it was just our tour guide as many people I talk to LOVE the salt mines. Auschwitz and Birkenau is a must see. So powerful and horrific.

It ended up being a 12 hour day even though advertised 10- 11 hours. If you can break these activities up into two separate days I would recommend it as it’s A LOT of walking. However I was only visiting for a short time so this packed one day schedule worked better for me!

We had an excellent full day tour, great driver and excellent guides at both sites.

Was disappointed that we booked an 8am tour and was advised very late that our pick up was 6.40am. The company kindly refunded us some of the fee as compensation. Actually after the tour I was happy not to claim the refund, however it was paid with the efficiency the tour was run. I can only thank this company for their great service and excellent tour.

Meeting place was easy as our apartment was in the restricted zone. Pick up was on time and our driver Martin was very friendly and spoke excellent English. Salt mines were amazing, who knew such a place existed? Lots of walking and hundreds of steps down, done in stages but you do need good footwear and to be reasonably fit. We purchased the prebookable lunch which was nice, not much availability to purchase food at the salt mine, There’s a coffee shop and the queue was long and because the tours of all 3 places are timed it’s probably easier to buy the lunch or bring your own. Auschwitz tour was harrowing which is to be expected. Our guide was excellent. We were given a headset and receiver so we could hear her clearly without her having to raise her voice. After this tour we drove a bit further to Birkenau, this part of the tour is mostly outside. It was freezing cold with a mixture of snow, rain and sleet which made the horror of it all the more realistic. A day we will never forget.

Booked before we left the UK. Price is good value. Communication is excellent. We walked to the nearest hotel as staying in an Airbnb, so it seemed more convenient, but they probably would have driven to us! Small private bus with 27 passengers. (We were the back seat kids!)
Pick up was efficient, packed lunches for 30 zloty available, just text them! We opted to take our own lunch.
Pick up at 8.55am. Picked up three other couples, so the bus was full.
Around half an hour to the Salt Mines (thought we were going to Auschwitz first?)
Easy entrance, private tour guide took us around. It's approximately 850 steps down to 135 metres deep. This is over time and a few steps to each cavern, so moderatley easy for most people considering this tour.
Ten minute break at the end to grab facilities and drinks.
Back to the bus and a further 1hr 20 minutes to Auschwitz. This is now around 12 noon, so most people eating lunch on the bus as we go.
At Auschwitz, it's a 5 minute walk to the private tour guide. There is a tour of approximately 1.5 hours walking around Auschwitz . Another 10 minute break for toilet and enough time to grab a coffee to go. Back to the bus and a 5 minute ride to Birkenau, where you are met by the same tour guide and another 1 hour walk around tour.
Back to the bus and it's around 1.5 hours back to Krakow and you are dropped off where you were collected from unless you want to jump off at another stop, which is what we did.
In short, great private tours, great value for money, easy pickup and drop off, comfortable and made lots of friends on the trip.
The only thing I didn't like was the speed of everything!. There was a restaurant in the Salt Mine which looked amazing, I would have liked to have had the opportunity to have a 1 hour break for lunch to sit around and enjoy the mine with lunch. When we got to Auschwitz, the tour guide is already waiting, so there is no time to use the facilities as everyone is waiting for you.
It's very fast paced, it's hours of walking and no time to sit around for half an hour and enjoy coffee or lunch. You eat and drink as you walk. But, thoroughly enjoyed the day, good tour guides and worth a visit. Arrived back at 6.30pm.

Thank you for posting this review and we suppose you're satisfied with the service provided. The salt mine part is a standard around 2.5 hours tour and you have to remember that both of the sites are extremely busy places where we all have to respect the schedules they provide so 1 hour lunch break inside the salt mine is not possible for anyone except the school tours who pretty often spend a night underground. We do provide a lunch boxes at additional cost and always advice everybody to bring their food if they don't take the lunch box and we do that instead of the lunch break time with one simple reason - the day itself is long. This tour is around 10-11 hours and adding a lunch break to it would make it around 12-13 hours trip which we believe would be too much. That's also a reason why we sometimes do salt mines first - during busy days a queues in Auschwitz-Birkenau in the morning even to pass the obligatory security check is usually for about 45-60 minutes. Another queues to the toilets, snack bars or vending machines adds another 20-30 minutes of delay. Doing salt mine in the morning pretty often means hassle free no queues to facilities and more space for you in both of the sites inside during your tours with the guides. Anyway thank you for having you on the tour with us :)

I rated this 3 out of 5 would have love the option of 3 and a half out of 5! Because it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good!!!🤦
If your unfit don’t bother, you will walk altogether 11 km. most of your walking will be down the salt mines that really aren’t that good, I mean there ok but it’s a frigging salt mine! There is so many tours going on that you are literally listening to your guy while listening to the tour in front and the tour behind! Our guy was a really nice lady but spoke pigeon English and you really are marched along at some pace. Some of the sculptures and places of worship in the salt mine are worth a second look. If I was to do it again probably do the trip separately. It was almost 12 hours long altogether and about three of the hours is going around krakow picking people up from there hotel in the middle of rush hour🤦 and of course rush hour when your dropping back off!!
The camp tours were very interesting and very moving are guide spoke really softly and was really hard to hear! One of the group asked him to speak up but was told that it would be disrespectful for him to raise his voice🤷 so it ended up in a catch 22 situation where no one could hear him but no one could complain.
It is sooo busy and there is security, so you will need your passport or some form of identification.
The camps are huge so be prepared for more walking. Our driver and host were brilliant, I am glad I did it but would definitely recommend doing them separately unless you are reasonably fit ✌️❤️

Thank you for your opinion however there are some facts that we need to straighten. First of all the tour in the mine has 3 km route and it is less than the Auschwitz-Birkenau distance to take during the visit there. Maybe it is just a Salt Mine but it is a UNESCO heritage from the middle ages and most of the people are stunned how beautiful impressive and big inside it is. It may not be your cup of tea which we totally understand. Second thing is that you mentioned you spent 3 hours in the bus on the pickup and drop off which is really never that long. We start the tour around 8 AM and usually end it around 6 PM and yes quite often in the rush ours during the weekdays (it is not really possible to avoid that) but the drive is around 30 minutes in the morning and around 30-40 minutes in the afternoon which depends on the traffic. Regarding the guides there were both official ones provided by the museums and they do not let anybody else to to the visits there and we have no impact for choosing the guides and no one have. We are glad that you said that the tour leader and the driver were brilliant and you glad you did it.

This was a fantastic tour! Our tour guide emailed us the day before to check if we were still going and picked us up the next morning at the exact time that they said they would in a comfortable, air conditioned mini van. Once we had collected the rest of the group, we made our way to the Salt Mines which was around 20 min from Krakow. There, we received a guided tour from an official which lasted just over 2 hours. From there, we travelled around 1 hour 10 min to Auschwitz where we had a lunch break at the cafe there before receiving a tour from an official guide for around 2 hours. We then travelled 5 minutes to Birkenau and the same tour guide met us and completed an hour tour of the area. We then travelled back to Krakow where we were dropped off outside our hotel.
I could not recommend this tour enough as we were able to save a day by completing the two experiences in the one day. The day was very well organised and meticulously planned and we did not have to worry about tickets as our tour guide had them organised for us.
