Two of us did the "Salkantay Dome to Dome to Machupicchu By Train 4D/3N" and had an excellent experience! Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The domes were clean, the food was tasty, and the overall trek went smoothly. We also really liked being part of a smaller group (5 people total). Definitely recommend!

The hike itself was absolutely amazing!! Awesome views, lovely nature and absolutely wonderful flowers and trees.

Salou is a really nice and informed guide. We also had Marie and Johan, two starting guides. Marie spoke well English, Johan only Spanish. The language we sadly don’t speak. The first accommodation in the dome was amazing, hot water for a minute and warm beds. Even it was -7 outside, we were not cold at all and I am person who gets cold pretty fast. The breakfast was simple (Bread and jam, and one pancake (pp)), we missed fruit. I understand is it super remote, but we can’t hike for 6 hours only on a pancake and some dry bread. The second day we did the hike to humanity lake, it was tough but absolutely amazing. Take enough water and snacks with you! The second day we slept in a tent in a wooden building, was pretty fine too. Food again is simple for lunch and diner first a soup and rice with some veggies. The thirth day we did a morning hike and after lunch we took the bus and another 2,5 hours walking next to the train to reach Machu Picchu. We stayed at Shinhi Roca, simple but hot water. The restaurant we at was at the opposite of the hostel, not good at all. We took the bus up and down to Machu Picchu, because we had tired legs,24 dollar both ways. The train we took was 90dollars from Aqua Calientes, so I think the organization does not make a lot of money.

Pro’:
-They take the time, always willing to help and want to make your stay perfect.
- Dome was great!

Con’s:
- Not a lot of veggies or fruits. Bring yourself enough!
- Not all guides spoke English, so we did not know what was going on sometimes.

One of the best experiences of my life. The agency staff were so professional and they saved our vacation by finding us tickets for Macchu Pichu when nobody else could help. The trek itself was stunning and we had an amazing guide...thank you so much Alex! My wife has medical issues and Alex was so understanding and helpful, we hired horses for part of the climb, which I think secretly as a family we all enjoyed as much as the hiking for a day. The accommodation in domes is very comfortable, with warm bedding, private bathrooms. Food was great every day, with plenty to eat. The trekking can be pretty tough but so rewarding and some of the views are spectacular

This trek was the start to my husband and my honeymoon, and we had an amazing time. We booked through Chakana Tours and chose a semi-private tour (maximum 5 people) which ended up just being us and our incredible, hilarious guide Roberto. We chose to spend some money on this option to avoid a lot of the pitfalls that are in some recent reviews and that I heard from trekkers with other companies along the trail.
With a smaller group, 1. you chose your pace (we were not held up by slow or unprepared hikers, could take detours, and avoided bad weather), and 2. the guide and cook get to know you and while it was clearly in the guide's contract to up-sell the emergency horse and third day car option, he knew we didn't need it and didn't push us on it. As a result, we enjoyed a well organized tour, pretty comfortable lodgings (you are camping after all), learned a lot and experienced an unmatched range of natural settings.
However, the guide we had at Machu Picchu, Andres, was horrible. Completely self absorbed and disrespectful of visitors coming from across the world to learn about this incredible site - after using 30 minutes for us to take pictures in the same place, we stood in another spot for 2 hours while he criticized people for taking selfies, told us unrelated personal stories and rambled almost incoherently, under the guise of making us understand the deeper meaning of the place. We heard maybe 3 facts and one interesting story about Machu Picchu, and were told that we could look the rest up on the internet. If we hadn't done the hike up with Roberto and these were my only 2 hours to really experience about the place, the main purpose behind choosing Peru as a destination would have been kind of ruined.
