        Excellent!
Excellent trip out on the Kaituna. Shoutout to Cam & Nev who took us out. Our trip was part of a Stag weekend, and the banter was great and the Stag certainly got a good drenching. The lads were all buzzing afterwards. Will definitely be back again.

Great day rafting the Rangitaiki River.
Right from the safety brief, through the rapids and back for the lunch, the team made it a great day. We can now say “we have rafted the Rangitaiki River…oh yeah”. Thanks for the experience.

        Amazing experience
The guides were knowledgeable, ensuring our safety while also making the trip incredibly fun. The scenery was breathtaking, with lush greenery along the riverbanks. The rapids were thrilling yet manageable, perfect for both beginners and experienced rafters. Overall, it was an unforgettable adventure that I would highly recommend to anyone seeking an adrenaline-packed journey

Memories on the Rangitaki with River Rats
My partner and I enjoyed our experience with River Rats very much. Our guides Nev and Cam made us feel welcome, safe and we engaging the entire time. The rafting was exciting and thoroughly enjoyable. The mix bag of weather we experienced only made the experience more memorable.

This was a brilliant and exciting tour with some excellent guides. They knew the river inside out and were great fun to have on the boat!

        Awesome experience!
Pick up and drop of from accommodation was no hassle. All gear is provided to keep you warm. The guides were knowledgeable, fun and most importantly you felt safe with them. The rapids were super fun with plenty of games thrown in, a chance to swim through rapids and going over 3 waterfalls was awesome! Adrenaline filled, once in a life time experience, would 100% recommend!

        Magical !
Amazing way to spend an afternoon and evening. Nice kayak trip across the lake, followed by a good soak in the hot pools - what a hidden little treasure! Followed by a tasty barbecue dinner - by chef Justin. Our guide, Justin, had lots of stories and historical facts about the area, so it wasn't all about exercise - thank you, Justin. The return trip across the lake was magical: the sunset light, the glow-worms cave, the paddling under the moon and stars. An excursion to remember - we'll return for more of the same!

River Rats Kaituna River Rafting. A fun ride.
Had a great time. Guides were great. Safety was always top of mind but still made sure we had fun. Its a fairly short section of river with only a few good rapids so don't expect the same experience as a full day on the Zambizi River but still worth the money. The big waterfall drop is definitely exciting. I would recommend to anyone as a fun addition to your visit to Rotorua.

Beyond our wildest expectations and more
This was a truly amazing kayak trip. The paddle across Lake Rotoiti in both directions was fun and beautiful and the soak in the hotsprings upon our arrival on the other side was just fabulous. We pretty much had the place to ourselves which is hard to come by these days. We were also lucky in the sunset was so beautiful and we were able to enjoy it while eating a delicious BBQ dinner made by our guide, Justin. On our way back across the lake, we enjoyed clear skies prett much no wind, making for such an easy paddle. The best part, however, was the ending - easing into a little cave full of gloworms hanging from the ceiling then floating back out into a night full of sparkling stars. So very beautiful. River Rats gave us a tour that was beyond our expectations, from great and thoughtful gear, to an informative guide, and an amazing time experiencing some of New Zealands unique and fabulous natural features.

Such an amazing trip! Our guide Zac skillfully led us on a white water adventure that exceeded all our expectations. Our two hour ride was split between traversing rapids and floating serenely along calm stretches. Really lovely. We would happily do it again.

        Super Fun for 1st Timers!
We had a great time with River Rats on the Rangitaiki rafting excursion! All 4 of our party are retired, 3 taking our 1st rafting experience and loved it! Beautiful forest and river views throughout and plenty of whitewater fun ably guided by Zak. Would go again without hesitation, such fun.

        10/10 recommend!
This is by far our favorite excursion we’ve done on our vacation! We enjoyed the simplicity of the safety rules and guidelines (AKA, just hold onto the boat and the rest doesn’t matter 🤪) They provide wetsuits, wet shoes, and fleece gear as well which was cool. The photo package at the end was for a great price for ~150 pics! It was also hilarious that our entire raft, including our guide, were all American! Our guide, Zach, was phenomenal! He was patient, educated us well, and had super fun banter and humor throughout the entire event. The waterfall is DEFINITELY worth the hype, by the way! Can’t recommend this enough!

One of our best white water experiences anywhere!
Exhilarating! We had an absolute blast! Our guide, Zach, did a great job - highly recommend! Appreciated the wet suit when we jumped in the river at a calm spot: cold but definitely part of the fun. Will do again next time!

Great place and an amazing ride. Just 3 on raft was great. We stayed upright but 2 rafts with a different company provided real entertainment.

I cannot say enough good things about our experience with Justin and the crew from River Rats. We had a crew of 15 young people with intellectual and learning disabilities on the river with 4 support workers and 3 raft guides and we were super impressed with how patient and understanding all of the staff were towards all of our young people, for the entirety of the trip. All staff went above and beyond to make sure our participants felt safe and supported. We went in the middle of winter but all felt warm enough with the wetsuits and fleeces provided.

Firstly thank you again to Justin and the crew for the day on the water it's one we won't forget soon.
The day started at Murupara where we got detailed briefs on the days activities and also the safety on the river. We had multiple anxious people on this trip that were afraid of the water or could not swim but the guides were able to keep them calm and reassure them they will be the first ones to be rescued if the worst happened. A quick van ride to the start of the river and we were into it.
The river itself was humming, with great water flow this made for a exhilarating trip. It had a good mix of big drops and more technical rapids so that was awesome and kept everyone engaged throughout.
The guides were professional and entertaining which made for a safe and enjoyable day for all involved.
I had a blast as did everyone on our trip and we will definitely be back. Cheers guys.

This was a fantastic trip for the family. The kids were able to play and swim very safely at many places on our way down the river and loved floating through the rapids and jumping off the raft!

The river is amazing with great places to stop along the way for photos and a drink of spring water straight from the rock face!

Our guide Justin was friendly and professional and made he trip so much fun for the kids. He was very knowledgeable of the area and made the transfers from hotel and assembly area really interesting with all his local knowledge and entertaining stories!

A perfect day out for the family We look forward to doing it again!

A great time! Justin, our guide, was really fun and very experienced. He communicated well and did a great job with the kids, who loved it. There were several opportunities to jump in and float through some rapids, which was great. The scenery along the way is stunning, which made for some great photos. A really fantastic family experience, thanks Justin!

Very nice experience for the children and myself. Experienced staff and instructions were clear. Scenic, nature and an informative guide made the day a very nice experience. Would be nice if somehow pictures/video of the day were available for purchase but I guess the logistics are difficult. Just a would be nice feedback.

Did the Grade 3-4 rapids. Very scenic!! Don't bring too much stuff with you on the boat, you won't need any of it. There's a shed at the base you can leave your dry stuff and towels etc in.

The Grade 4 rapids were more exciting - some actual movement and splash and maneuvering needed. We kayak for leisure and do some other watersports so we were quite comfortable with paddling and everything. The Grade 3 rapids were a bit boring after a while - more or less just cruising along with some bumps but not much splash. Wish it could've been grade 4 all the way!

Guides were great. Lots of safety instructions and they're clearly very experienced. Very friendly and helpful too!

The lunch provided after the rafting was a simple sandwich and cookies so I'd suggest getting a decent breakfast beforehand.

Thanks for your review. Note this is a review of our Rangitaiki Grade 3 - 4 option but you have posted it in the grade 2 trip section As we serve lunch when we get off the river around 2.30pm we do recommend people have a good breakfast. For people who are looking for more excitement we also have grade 5 trip options.

Booked a tour suitable for 10+ conditions apply, and advised to be at the airport at 10:30am.We were greeted by an unhappy guide who informed us we should have been there at 10am- lovely start.
Get to the area to get wetsuits etc. and they didn’t have one small enough for our 10 year old and just managed to find one big enough for our 14 year old. Kids were in for an uncomfortable ride.
Trip was underway when we found out what the condition for the 10 year old was- she was expected to get out and walk along the bank by herself for part of the journey- if we had known that we would have looked for an alternative.
Would I recommend River Rats- no, was it worth the $500 for our family of 4- hell no.

Hi Donna, I was completely shocked by your review and disappointed that you did not think the trip provided value for money. I have sent a message through the Trip Advisor System, hopefully we can talk and get some more details on what went wrong. We pride ourselves on our customer service and the majority of reviews represent that, so it is very disappointing when we do not meet a customer's expectations. It sounds like you have been given incorrect information by the accommodation provider who booked the trip for you (especially around the timing) but I would like to get the bottom of this to ensure it does not happen again. I was surprised by your comments regarding the wetsuit sizing. We have a recommended minimum weight limit of 30kg for this trip but ask that we are advised of any participants under 40kg. We have a maximum recommended weight limit of 125kg so there should not have been any issue with wetsuit sizing. Regarding having to walk, we advertise that we can raft as young as 10 years old but as you mentioned our information states there are additional conditions for anyone under 13. These are in place for passenger's safety. On this river our most technical rapids are at the beginning when customers are just getting the hang of things. The walk around is only about 150 metres out of the 14km trip, there is no potential to wander off the track but if ever someone was not comfortable walking on their own one of the guides could accompany them and then walk back. At lower water levels we walk everyone around as the hazards are more difficult to avoid. These are operational requirements under Maritime Rule part 81 and anyone operating commercially on this section would be subject to the same requirements. We believe this trip represents the best value for money rafting in NZ for a full day trip including lunch. Hopefully we can discuss with you further what went wrong and why you don't feel that was the case in this instance and learn from the mistakes. Note: this is a review of our Rangitaiki Grade 3 - 4 option but it has been posted it in the grade 2 trip section.
