What to expect
When booking, choose from the 2-gorge cruise, the 3-gorge cruise, or the dawn cruise. Each has a different departure time and these three options mean you can select one that fits your schedule. Make your way to the Nitmiluk boat jetty, where you will meet your river guide. Step aboard the boat and learn about the flora, fauna, and geology of the area while snapping photos and taking in the epic views. Between each connected gorge, you will disembark and walk to the next (about 1,640 feet or 500 meters), where you can reboard the boat. If you choose not to complete the walk, there is a shaded area for resting. The 2-gorge cruise focuses on the area's heritage and the history of the aboriginal people who originally occupied the area. The 3-gorge cruise continues on further, where you can cool down with a swim and some light refreshments. Book the early morning dawn cruise to see the day's most spectacular colors.

Mother Nature at it’s best
Incredible! This is a must do to fully appreciate how stunning the gorge is. We did the 2 gorge cruise- would like to have done more gorges, but as I only booked day prior meant this was our only option.
The guide was very knowledgeable and explained how gorge was formed, how season’s impact water levels, significance to the indigenous, wildlife etc.
It is truly spectacular and a definite must do.

Not to be missed
We just loved the narration. It was both entertaining and informative.

The trip starts a long way from the Visitor Information Centre. There is plenty of parking but the overall walk would be at least 750 metres from the parking area. Those in the know take the right hand turn to the boat ramp. Here you can park virtually at the departure point.

The boats are big and airy. The seats quite comfortable. Water and toilets are available.

The trip unsurprisingly starts in Gorge 1. You travel with a few highlight stops to the end. In the dry season you leave the boat and walk past aboriginal rock paintings to Gorge 2 where you embark a new boat. The walk is very easy and safe. It has a lot of pebblecrete to make it foot friendly. Gorge 2 is where the famous shots come from.

We went to the end then retraced our “steps”. We continued on past the dock to look for crocodiles. Apparently they like to hang out under the plentiful fruit bats. 3 hots but no cot. We saw one on a log, smiling at us. At the last second it disappeared into the water.

We did the two gorge, two hour trip. We were satisfied that this was enough.

I booked on the Sunset dinner cruise as a last minute decision. I thought the price was very reasonable for the 3.5 hour cruise including a 3 course meal. As a vegetarian, I was looked after and thought the entree was a highlight. Katherine gorge is stunning and being able to watch the rock edges change colour as the sun went down was amazing. Special mention to our guide, Allan. He was welcoming and very knowledgeable and shared many facts about the gorge, park and the country we were on. All the staff were fabulous. A great experience I highly recommend.

Jul 2021
very nice calm cruise I did the 2 gorge cruise and it was enough would be better if they allowed you to swim as its bloody hot. the 2nd Gorge is the better one and you do have to do a gentle walk from one boat to the other. its an easy walk so do it.

Spectacular at Sunset
Jun 2021
I had been on this cruise 40+ years ago. The Katherine Gorge is still as wonderful as it was then. The facilities have improved with a nice walkway between the 2 parts of the Gorge where you need to change boats. The views are spectacular, so keep your camera ready! The commentary was excellent as we travelled along. Before you go, check out the climb to the lookout that gives you views along the Katherine River. There is a big parking area and toilets nearby. The whole family will enjoy this activity, but very young children might find it challenging to sit and walk to the second gorge.

Amazing cruise. The tour guide was passionate and told us about the story of the gorge with lots of anecdotes. The sighting is mind blowing. The colours of the rocks are stunning. We did the 2 gorges cruise. And on the way back to the visitor center, we stopped to take photos of the zillions of bats that live right there.

Enjoyable Morning with the Family.
Very enjoyable cruise. The guide was entertaining and informative. The scenery was amazing. You cruise up the first gorge then a short easy walk around the rapids to the next one and repeat until the end. On the way back we stopped for a swim and relax. The boats are safe and secure and everyone is afforded a good view of the sites including the occasional fresh water croc.

A brilliant experience. We had a fantastic, knowledgeable tour guide who gave us extensive information about Aboriginal cultural practices and knowledge, the wildlife and the geographical history of the area. A wonderful experience I would highly recommend!
