About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- LS207A0 contributionsFun & safe sea kayakingAlthough the weather was cool and misty, they provided kayak jackets, spray skirts and booties, so we stayed dry and warm. We were happy to see dusky dolphins swimming around us.Written January 25, 2025
- grahamwZ6135OP0 contributionsGreat experienceGreat tour, saw a big pod of dolphins up close! Also, saw some seals and lots of shore birds. Shelem was a excellent guide.Written January 23, 2025
- Liz W0 contributionsExcellent experience kayaking with dolphins.Great equipment and very friendly staff. Leader Emma was excellent, very informative about wildlife and competently wrangled 2 older ladies around the sea without mishap. Saw a pod of dusky dolphins, seals and a variety of birds. Will was also very efficient doing the majority of the paddling. The whole day ran like clockwork even the weather was fine . Would definitely recommend them again for any ability.Written January 23, 2025
- Companion364371524490 contributionsKaikouri KayakingWe had a great kayak trip with our guides Emma and Izzy - great views of the marine life and the coastline and lots of informative commentary. A fun afternoon…Written January 21, 2025
- Anne P0 contributionsStunning sea kayak from KaikouraFantastic experience and our guide Cam was great at looking after us all. Kept us together and even took some photos which he shared with us. Felt very safe and loved being out at sea with the beautiful view of the mountains.Written January 18, 2025
- NorthStar147954502990 contributionsWill make you want a Kayak of your ownThe business was very well set up and run, from arrival to leaving. Organisation was slick, the guides were friendly and we were always comfortable. We were all in two person kayaks, and there were three kayaks in our group. We got to see some great scenery, seals and the odd penguin. I particularly enjoyed turning all the kayaks in to one great bobbing raft while watching the fur seals lolling about, but my favourite part was heading just out of the shelter of the bay and feeling the rock of the swells in the little boat! Emma our guide was a boss, never steered us wrong and kept us calm when we were uncertain of our ability, and took some great photos for us when I was too busy watching the scenery to do it myself.Written January 18, 2025
- andrewwI3502ZL0 contributionsA swell time with dolphinsWe went out with Charli who was very knowledgeable about the local wildlife & made everyone feel confident and comfortable in the 2 metre swell; great guide! The company was well organised and very well equipped. Instructions were very well provided too. Seeing a Hectors dolphin or two was the highlight for us!Written January 14, 2025
- Coastal671624954950 contributionsIncredible experience!what an experience! We saw about 6 seals, a blue fin penguin, AND A HUMPBACK WHALE!!! we joined the 8:30am tour, everything was explained well, we felt super safe and well prepared, all staff were friendly and approachable. Once we got into the water, there were sightings of a humpback whale - I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff were at ensuring we didn’t get too close for the whales safety, but got close enough that it will stay in my mind forever. They explained the rules about why we stay in small groups and ensure we don’t get in the way of the whale on its route, which as an animal lover made it all the more special. Guide then took epic photos of everyone in the group. We couldn’t recommend enough - even without the whale this would’ve been a wonderful experience.Written January 6, 2025
- Hannah B0 contributionsAmazing!!!!!!!!We had a really great time joining a sunset tour. Great communication with the company as strong winds were predicted and we were offered a different date and times. Due to our plans we couldn’t change but they kept us up to date on whether it would go ahead. We were forewarned about the conditions so we could make an informed choice, which thankfully agreed to go ahead. We were completely kitted out (boots, waterproof jacket, skirt and trousers if you wanted them) the kayaks were also much better than ones we had when we were in Norway! My boyfriend just about fit, without it being painful and he is 6”4. All our guides were great but Brad and Charli were assigned to group and they were amazing!! Brad was pointing out all the interesting birds and had great knowledge to go with them! Charli was fun and gave great tips! Thanks to you all for agreeing to take us out in the super windy conditions! Would definitely book with this company again if (hopefully when) we come back to NZWritten January 5, 2025
- timaN2939JN0 contributionsPerfect wildlife paddleVery friendly team who gave us a feeling of confidence and safety as well as great wildlife info. - S6301QJmegang0 contributionsThe best of KaikouraBy far one of the best experiences of our life. We had guide Zoe who was absolutely amazing. We are a family of six (2adults, 4 kids) and Zoe was so friendly and interacted well with all our kids. Was such a well organised tour and loved the dolphins playing right there with us. Words certainly can't describe how amazing this tour was.Written December 16, 2024

- joannahJ4051MS0 contributionsFantastic way to spend the morning and view the peninsula !Had the best morning kayaking whilst visiting family in Kaikoura. Extremely knowledgable and engaging tour guide Zoe led a fantastic trip out to the coves catered to our group, with great description of all passing wildlife (including heaps of seals and seabirds) and local geography provided . Felt very safe throughout, and appreciated the tactful way they were able to accomodate varying joint (knee) mobility amongst our group! highly enjoyed the morning, fab conditions - would definitely recommend and do again - thank you !Written December 8, 2024

Our whole family could go - 3 year old in the middle, 5 and 9 year olds in the front of Dad and Granny, Mum infront of personal guide.
Brilliant. Kids a bit nervous, but settled well. Seals were just great - on the rocks and rolling in the ocean - preening the oil onto their coat for waterproofing, NOT just for the joy of rolling in the water, but it looks like that! HUGE mountains, so close. Great photos. Lots of fun. THANK YOU, I will be back.

Not enough good things to say about Matt & the crew!!!! We were there for a camp with youth. This might not be why you are there but their ability to accommodate us speaks of the flexibility and desire to meet your needs.
We paddled in the morning with one group & then the afternoon with another. Both groups were youth who were tell taken care of. Some highlights...
* Orientation and time to get on the water was quick and thorough, allowing us maximum time on the water.
* Ability to paddle in the open ocean. There are lots of sea kayaking outfits in NZ but few/none as unique as Kaikōura Kayaks in their ability (weather willing) to take clients into the open ocean. The big ground swells rolling up underneath us was amazing for the kids.
* At no time did we feel out of our depth and therefore Matt and his crew had great management of real risks & perceived risk.
* Time spent on interpretation of local wildlife was great, and at a level that our campers understood and felt tuned into.
As I said there are lots of sea kayaking providers in NZ but if you want something that separates a paddling experience from all the others... Go and see Matt at Kaikōura Sea Kayaks

Our ship was late docking due to fog but Matt worked extremely hard to accommodate us in a different time slot. Our ship didn't offer private kayaking, only a group one which we didn't want as we didn't want to be slowed down. Matt understood this and provided this private tour for us.
Ru was highly experienced and patient and took us further afield than a group could go due to there only being two of us in one kayak and this was the experience we had hoped for. As a result we were lucky enough to see a seal feeding on octopus, some blue penguins and a sting ray all very close up, as well as many seals in and out of the water and lots of bird varieties.
I highly recommend Kaikōura Kayaks and this private tour. Great people, fab day!

Good spot, and probably guaranteed to encounter seals. Very very pricy. Its basically 400 nzd for renting two twin kayaks and paddle around the seal colony. Given the price I can’t recommend it even if the guides were nice people.

Hi PW20212,
Thanks for your honest feedback.
Just to clarify the price is $260 NZD pp for a PRIVATE “Guided Wildlife Kayaking Tour” which guaranties NZ Fur Seal viewing with chance encounters of Dolphins, Blue Penguins and your own Guide using a traditional Sea Kayak.
The price for Sit On Top Kayak Hire is $55.00 NZD PP or Sea Kayak Hire $70.00 NZD PP for a half day.
Hope this helps PW20212.
The Kaikoura Kayaks Team.

We were 3 of us and had a private tour with Emma. It was an amazing day. Kaikoura kayaks provided us with warm waterproof jackets and life jackets. We had a good briefing about rowing and safety guidelines before we began our amazing kayak tour. Our tour guide Emma was wonderful. She explained about Kaikoura. We saw lot of fur seals, crayfish and an albatross. We had a wonderful experience

Great family trip. Josh was a fun and knowledgable guide and having a couple of training outdoor education enthusiasts (Francois and Ben) was an added bonus. We felt safe, warm and looked after the whole time.

Truly one of the most amazing experiences! I had my SUP with me but my friend hired a kayak so that we could go out and find some dolphins together. Kaikoura kayaks were helpful from the start and gave us heaps of great tips. They also let me hire a life vest as I didn’t have one and the weather was a little rugged. We found a pod of dolphins that were very interested in checking us out and having a play around our boards. So magical. Great, friendly service! I would highly recommend!

It was a hot calm day which made paddling easy. Our guide Jon was great at checking we were doing okay. He gave us lots of interesting info on the seals, and was funny too 😀. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone.
