- Y6429TBlaram0 contributionsHighly recommend! Thanks to Morgan! We had an incredible time on the West Coast Treetop walk and tower Zip Line, all thanks to Morgan! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience so enjoyable. Her positive energy and great guidance helped us feel comfortable and have fun every step of the way. Highly recommend!Written January 20, 2025
- Jedsmom0 contributionsPleasantly SurprisedDown to Hoki for a bike ride and met friends here for lunch. Pleasantly surprised as last couple of times staff and food has been rather lacking but we knew under new management and what a huge different. Staff were super friendly, helpful - smiling (the simple things). Made great recommendations when couldn't decide on all the great choices of food options. Food was delicious. Well done team - look forward to our next visit.Written December 19, 2024
- louiseg4770 contributionsFantastic funFantastic fun, even in the rain! Such a great visitor attraction, the tree top views were amazing and the zip line exhilarating. Staff very professional and very friendlyWritten December 14, 2024
- karentU1255HG0 contributionsFabulous experienceWe had a great day. The walk upto the top was a bit step but the staff were giving people a lift up and down the hill. The view from the tower was amazing. After we had done the walk we stopped at the Cafe for lunch. Wonderful service and yummy food. You must try Mama’s huge sausage roll, delicious!Written October 21, 2024
- Passport158636491430 contributionsPoor experience, not impressedWas disappointing to say the least. Did the combo, but got no guided tour, just a ride up to the tower to zipline. The staff were so unenthusiastic which made the experience less exciting. They were very deadpan and lack luster, no smiles or banter, just a job to them. The zipline itself was fun but would be better to have an option to pay for just zipline and not the Treetop Walk aswell, which from what I saw from the tower wasn't full of trees, it was very sparse. After zipline, no staff mentioned the tree top guided walk I had to ask if we could walk it which I decided not to.Written October 20, 2024
- K2115LOshirleys0 contributionsAncient forest come to life with a walk and a zip!A fun way to visit some of the ancient forests surrounding Hokitika. Views were spectacular. It was nice to be able to walk near the top of the forest and looking down for a change. You can really see all the life that exists in the trees when you are at eye level with them. Something you cannot appreciate when down on the ground looking up. It was great to end the walk with a zipline down to the visitor center.Written April 21, 2024
- OxfordAardvark0 contributionsA great way to see more of the local wildlife and bushWe came across this site when on a tour of NZ South Island, and took a diversion from the main coast road to see what it offered. It's a 20 m high treetop walk through native forest. The walkways are all very new, and very safe. Both of us are a little nervous of heights, and it is high enough to make your pulse race for a while. The higher 45m viewing platform isn't for the faint-hearted, especially the external spiral staircase going up to it. Only one of us managed this....., is was worth it though. Overall this was an interesting and worthwhile diversion, and we would recommend. if you're brave enough there is a zip-line from the 45m platform, but I think you need to book this specifically.Written March 14, 2024
- 20jag200 contributionsTreetop walkBad weather had closed the zip line but we walked around the track. There were still good views and interesting things to see. The cafe had delicious food and friendly staff.Written March 4, 2024
- PDWEB0 contributionsAverage tree top walkNice place and the treetop walk is really well set up but underwhelming for the price paid. We paid $94 for the family and it’s really only worth half that. It was over before we knew it. A free hike to see the lake is a better option.Written January 9, 2024
- 422iana0 contributionsWalk in the treesI was quite excited to do this activity while traveling down the West Coast. We got half-price tickets on bookme. To be fair, if I had paid full price I would have been disappointed if we had paid the full amount. There was some nice views but it was missing something.Written January 7, 2024
- Passenger266584535490 contributionsmismanaged chaosFrom a paying customer i find this place so disgustingly mismanaged. There was no staff to cope with the amount of people passing though. When i asked for management, i was told he was on his days off. what manager leaves their staff to strugge through these busy times?! I have been here a few times and i have never seen such chaos. Staff were being shouted at by the public. it was very obvious that they were stressed and upset with the situation. The floors to the cafe are filthy, the toilets also and there seems to be very little caretaking of the place. There was a lovely English girl who assured us of our safety on the zipline and gave us an enjoyable experience. The girl inside 'Ellie' was very apologetic and did her best with the busy cafe and i watched as the chef came out to serve people who was also very stressed. Mangement should be ashamed!! I run my own buisness with staff and its sure to say that if this happened in my establishment, they would have all left by now! I hope this review makes a difference to those poor staff in future and you are sensible about hiring more staff over busy periods.Written January 5, 2024
- 997priyap0 contributionsDO NOT EAT AT THE TREETOP CAFE!!!!Treetop cafe gave us a terrible experience. Food was disgusting, the hollaindaise sauce had gone off, eggs were overcooked, pizza cheese had gone off as it had been sitting outside all day. Staff were really rude. We asked for a refund for our food they said they would give it to us and to sit down and they bring it over. We waited 30 mins and went to speak to them again. The woman in charge was extremely rude and had a really bad attitude, she argued with us in front of other customers, shaking her head and doing signs behind our back. DO NOT EAT HERE! The food made us sick.Written November 20, 2023

- ChristchurchJules0 contributionsPleased I challenged myselfThe 4/5 is actually a reflection on me and not the setup. I am scared of heights and found it very challenging. I was so focused on putting 1 foot in front of the other and holding on that I didn't appreciate the beauty of the setting. My husband stopped at each info point to read the fact sheet, but I just had to keep going. Once I got to the last section, I managed to relax and even walk back a bit to try and challenge myself more. I didn't go up the tower nor out onto the cantilever part, but my husband did. He loved it all. I had wrongly assumed that I would be amongst the trees, but most of it was quite open, and I just looked straight ahead or up. It's great that I could walk holding onto the sides, and the structure does feel very safe. The café, toilets, and shop are great and I just wish I wasn't so pathetic because obviously heaps of effort has been put into making this a top quality attraction.Written September 20, 2023
- leoniem420 contributionsThe team at reception and with the lead up to the zip line part of the booking were friendly helpful and understanding.A magical experience walking above the trees. Stunning views across to snow covered mountains one way and across to the glittering blue lake the other way. Just beautiful. The information guide was excellent. Then the excitement of the zip line was brilliant. Such a calm capable team member to get me ready for an adrenaline packed life affirming ride through the trees. She was wonderful. I felt safe so I could appreciate the ride even mire. Loved the speed and sensation of flying. I thoroughly recommend this for all ages.Written September 8, 2023

Highly recommended and coming from a couple scared of heights, this is saying something! We felt safe throughout the walk and even climbed the tower to get a better view of the landscape.
Amazing views seen over the tree tops, and information display boards on the trees at each stopping point.
We were lucky to go on a stunning blue skies day, and there were only a few other tourists, as we entered around 9am.
And really suggest you stop for lunch at the cafe, as we had the best lunch of our trip there and prices of the food and souvenirs were not inflated as you normally expect at these tourist sites. The staff were also really lovely and welcoming and we will definitely visit here again when on the West Coast .

It has great views and a great steady walkway as well as a tower to climb for surrounding views. You can get a cheaper price on Bookme or pay the full price at the entrance, there is a cafe souvenir shop, and a toilet on-site as well as ample car parking even for campervans or buses. It is only a 15 to 20-minute drive south of Hokitika. The walk to the beginning of the walk is uphill on a gravel road but if this is too much then a shuttle is available on asking for both directions. The staff are friendly and helpful and provide service with a smile.

We got a good deal for entry on bookme (highly recommend getting the discount entry on there as saves a lot of $) I was glad we had done that because one of my son's and I actually chickened out with the sheer height we were at and the walking platform began swaying in the wind before we had even got to the second stop which we weren't expecting so sadly we weren't able to complete the whole walk I was glad we hadn't paid full price as no refund haha. My husband and other son carried on and had an absaloute blast together especially on the tower with the spiral staircase. Seeing the views which were only just visable due to the wild weather and watching the zipliners was reportedly super fun for them both. Check in for our entry was friendly and helpful and because the weather was abysmal they had umbrellas all ready for us to borrow and I was very greatful for this. There is a bit of a walk up to the tree top entry but there is heaps of stop and learn about points along the way and it appears that there is a shuttle that could take people up the hill if mobility is an issue. For people who might be skittish with heights I would only advise that the walkway is far higher up in the trees in reality than the pictures can ever truely depict, and preferably doing this on a sunny day would of made the end result of the walk tonnes better. This is something we have wanted to do for a while so it was nice all the same to finally to check it off the bucket list.

Wasn't impressed by the online 10% discount ($3.20) which was then eroded by a 50c booking fee - might be legal but I felt it was misleading. Not too many people there when I arrived, which was just as well, as the cafe and ticket till were next to each other so the queues for each got very confused and entangled. Free umbrellas sounded like a good idea but juggling umbrella, phone and reading the guide was a pain on the narrow walkways. I don't often get an attack of vertigo but the walkway provoked one with it's wobble and see-through metal grill; I definitely wouldn't recommend this for anyone even slightly nervous of heights. I'm sure the views are fantastic on a clear sunny day but I prefer looking at the tree tops from terra firma of the valley side or the base of the trees themselves.

Just south of Hokitika. The entrance fee of $32 is overpriced, a more realistic price would be $20. It is approx a 5 minute walk from the cafe to the start of the tree top walk which is 20 metres above the canopy, there is also a 47 metre tower you can climb with good views over the lake and surrounding Bush. The walk can take between 30 - 40 minutes depending on photo ops.

We arrived at the Tree top Cafe at 12 minutes past three today (20th July 2020) to be greeted by the hostess as we opened the front door with "Can I help you?". We stepped in and asked for a cup of tea and something to eat. The food display cabinet was full of prepared food and a basket of scones sat next to the cash register, along with another i/2 price scones at the side of the food display sign, presumably yesterdays left overs. We were informed that we could order a drink but no food was available. We said that something out of the display cabinet would be great but told again food was no longer available due to the kitchen closing at 3pm. We reiterated the prepared food on display would be great and again was told the kitchen was closed only drinks available. We asked about a scone with our tea, but no - "no food after 3 but we could order a drink".
We were not asking for the chef to make something for us, just wanted refreshment from cabinet or at least a scone to eat. Not possible.
It was like a 'Monty Python' or 'Faulty Towers' skit - a counter assistant determined not to sell the food on display and three puzzled clients.
We left unhappy at the rude and unhelpful service and drove back into Hokitika to buy the delicious fish and chips at Porkies Fish & Chip shop (opposite info centre) and went and sat at the beach to eat them.
We live 100km north of the Tree Top Walk Experience and had come to visit the attraction, have afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday and experience the walk so we could return with visitors to share another West Coast adventure.
That will not be happening now as I would not wish to subject anyone else to such rudeness.
Dorothy Falls (near by at the side of Lake Kaniere) and a home made picnic will be the much preferred option.

I have spoken to the staff that was on the day you came out.
From what I can gather I think there was a misunderstanding around the Chef saying the kitchen was closed. The girl on the front counter is new and didn't realise that that only meant cooked food from the menu.
If the cabinet food is still in the cabinet then it is definitely still for sale.
The basket you sure on the counter that said dated stock 50% off wasn't scones it was power bars that were out of date.
We never ever sell day old scones at 50% off.
I was away on leave at the time of your visit but i have checked back on the cameras to make sure no one had put scones in the basket.
I'm so sorry for your bad experience if you would like to contact me on 03 755 5052 Tuesday to Saturday ask for Vonnie I would like to invite you back.

The tree top walk is a nice walk being inside the tree line with some beautiful views out to the mountains. It would have been nice to see a whole lot more bird life, everything still seems to be a work in progress. It was $94 for 2 adults and 2 children which I thought was pricey compared to some other DOC walks in the area which are free. Looks like a zip line has been set up but not ready when we were there. Nice outdoor cafe area, however we didn’t stop to eat.

Booked months before we came and arrived in the typical west coast rain. That being said there are plenty of umbrellas available on site and there is a great cafe for a hot bite and a drink to warm up after. Great self guided tour with tons to learn as you go.
Absolutely would come again!

We have just come back from a wonderful morning at Tree tops. The views above the trees and over to the Alps were stunning and listening to the bird calls was great. They even provide transport to the walkway for those who are unable to walk up to the start. It provided a great amount of information on the forest and fauna as well as the birds found flying below you.
The café has great food at a reasonable price and with a open area for children to play while you are eating. They also have numerous children's toys there for the young ones to play with.
This is one place you should not miss when travelling the beautiful Westcoast.

Fun thing to do with the family. Interesting facts at each point. Our time there was a bit spoiled by a large tourist group that was very loud and pushy/rude (about 40 people). Also made climbing the stairs to the top point very squishy. Apart from that, we had a wonderful time. Well worth the time!!!

How accessible is it really? My brother is in a wheelchair and would love to do this but I just wanted to check how accessible it is? Is the hill up to the start very steep?
Thanks
