Bad reaction when I challenged a charge.
I think I can count on one hand the number of adverse reviews I've posted. This will be one of them. You know how you feel when one of those budget airlines stings you extra when they get the chance. That was my experience. And the owner, to whom I asked to speak about it so he knew exactly where I was coming from, had zero interest in doing anything other than defending his charge and making me feel like I was quibbling. The bottom line is that I hired a great bike and had a good ride on a wonderful trail to Arrowtown. Realising I would likely be late back to Q'town to return the bike if I rode, I planned to jump onto a local bus. Unfortunately, it arrived late into Arrowtown and then got a flat tire. (First ever public bus I've been on that has had flat!). After a couple of calls back and forth to their office to let them know what was going on I was offered their bus pickup. Sounds fairly good to this point. But it's from here that they need to rethink how they handle a situation like this. After I deplaned from the broken public bus, so to speak, I got another call telling me they would charge me full price for their pickup. A short while later, when I called to check on where their bus pickup was (it too was running late), I let them know I thought the charge wasn't a fair thing to do in the circumstances. Then we go south even more. According to the owner, it was more than fair given almost the same amount would be charged as a late fee if I wasn't back by the deadline time. Where was this fee explained I asked? In the terms and conditions link if I cared to press it when I checked the bike out, apparently. Really! Who reads these things. Well, our conversation went downhill from here to the point where I was quite shocked with how little they seemed to care. Clearly they have a successful business. They have mostly good reviews but a couple of negative ones - and another that had their own challenging experience with owner. You will probably be 100% ok to use these guys, but if it's just a simple bike hire and not one of the packaged bike tours they offer, then be aware there are other good options in Q'town at similar price points.

Don’t go here if you expect service
We hired bikes to cycle on our own. No explanation at all - not about the bikes, not about the routes. Routes are from gravel and some are quite advanced, so a little explanation would have been helpful. Staff really didn’t care and were very uninterested. Bikes are decent.

Great bike trip for those of us who do not ride regularly!
Do not do this if you have trouble with heights. If you do not have trouble with heights, you will love this, even if you are not a seasoned cyclist. We rarely ride and got electric bikes to help us on upslopes. That made it so pleasant! We could really enjoy the scenery. There are amazing views and points of interest along the way. For example, we watched a woman do a bungee jump from one of the bridges. That’s not something we would do, but it was thrilling to see her doing it. It’s nice to end at the winery. We enjoyed their wine and had a great meal. This was among the highlights of our trip to Queenstown. Also, the bikes were well maintained and fitted to us. The trip coordinators did a great job getting us acclimated to our bikes before sending us off, and they were great about giving safety guidance and hints to keep us from getting off the path. Signage along the way is good as well.

Don’t do this if you suffer from vertigo!
This tour should come with a warning for anyone who suffers from vertigo. There are two suspended bridges to cross and most of the trail is along the edge of the gorge with a 100ft drop. The online tour description gives no warning of this. I suffer from extreme vertigo and ended up pushing the (heavy electric) bike for most of the tour. When we returned to the office to point out that a more helpful description of the surroundings would be a good idea for people with vertigo, we were met with a complete denial of responsibility or any sympathy, which seems consistent with other comments on this site. In fact, the manager’s reaction was “why should we be responsible for your vertigo” which frankly completely misses the point. On the plus side, the young guys driving the shuttle buses were great and the bike itself worked well (for the short time I used it!).

      Splurge for the e-bike option
Seriously, don't be a cheapskate and splurge that extra NZ$50 for the e-bike option. The Arrowtown To Gibbston Valley Half Day Ride was just the right amount of time with just the right amount of sights. A lunch at Gibbston Valley Winery while waiting to be picked up was the perfect ending.

An Amazing Ride Diminished by Less Than Customer Service Oriented Staff
An amazing ride with fantastic views and a well maintained path diminished by less than customer service oriented staff who twice insisted that rain was not in the forecast, even while it was raining at the time. Glad that we were forced to ahead when they would not cancel as an hour or so into the ride the weather improved.

      Disappointed by an Arrogant Owner
I’d recommend using someone else in circumstance where something goes wrong. Concept: The trails, Queenstown and Arrowtown and concept is awesome. Highly recommend the concept. Beware of smaller kids in some areas as paths can be a little unforgiving with loose gravel and a lack of consistent barriers. Experience: The provider picks and drops you off as part of the service. At the time of collection it became apparent that the provider varied this transport agreement without corroborating or verifying the change in arrangements with a subsequent phone call. The result was 4 adults and 5 children being stranded 20km away. Upon phone call to the office we were confronted by a defensive admin staff who refused to acknowledge that we called the office to confirm the pickup arrangement at 10:58am that day, even though we said we had confirmation of the agreement at the time. We were escalated to the “owner” who was immediately defensive and arrogant with language that served only to diminish us as a customer of his very large and busy company. We were advised that our contribution of $4000 over 2 days with 9 persons was not important. This was unnecessarily patronising and not subject to the matter at hand and not helpful to assist to resolve the challenge at hand. Importantly, no acknowledgment was made in the role of the provider in the miscommunication, apology or offer to assist in trying to help with the final resolution being that it was “our problem”. These are free things for any owner to give and are only withheld by egocentric leaders. I hope next time the owner is confronted by a challenge that his company has been a partie to creating he could recognise: - it’s incumbent on him solely, as the final point of complaint escalation, to appease a frustrated client. - That every client is important in any business (no matter how insignificant) and that a sincere apology and effort to help correct easy to make. Telling a client repeatedly that they are insignificant isn’t a professional approach. - Finally your role is to deescalate an issue and not to escalate it by argumentative and defensive in posture. And if you truly don’t believe that your customer is right, at least internalise your thoughts, apologise for the situation and try to play a positive hand in fixing the issue. In this example, a mere offer to call a taxi would have been an easy exit to take. Unilaterally defending your staff and the situation does nothing to advance your standards as a business or that of your team and is overall a poor management trait that limits your personal growth and that of your team you are responsible to coach everyday. Hopefully after today and learning others have had similar issues before you could introduce a protocol that changes to service arrangements are made through the office only and not on the fly at site level based on casual interaction.

fabulous days biking arrowtown to queenstown
It was well organised and the shuttle got us to Arrowtown. The E-bike choice was very good for us on the day as there are short sharp hills and very edgy corners; its advisable to have mtn bke experience to do this ride. We ride regularly usually on gravel bikes and found it challenging at times. The Tucker beach extension was not very well signaged if you take it and beware as they are spraying rabbit poison all along the track which you are not forewarned about either. I would not take this choice again and believe we should have been forewarned. the Kelvin peninsula extra kms option also is narrow path used for walkers and loose dogs as well as cyclists. Some parts have large exposed rocks which you either dodge or ride over leaving only about 12 inches on the side of the path tipping to waters edge. In our experience you really need mtn biking exp to take this path as well. you really need most of the day to do it if you want to stop and take photos and have lunch somewhere too. Overall a great day but our advice is take the e-bike choice and have a little experience navigating corners and wear appropriate biking shorts as you will need them.

Great company for bike rentals and tours
We've used Around the Basin 4 or 5 times and never been disappointed. We always go for the E-Bikes, so we can go for longer and enjoy a harder ride without killing ourselves. This time was Arrowtown/Gibbston/Queenstown. Total 65km 6hours. Doable on a normal bike, but electricity makes it more enjoyable - there are three pretty big hills. This time we stopped more and found some lovely places to get our feet wet in the river. Always stop at Altitude Brewing

Wonderful long day around the Lake
A long day from Arrowtown to Gibbston, back along the lake to Queenstown - 60km+/ 6 hours+, but on E-bikes, no problems. We've used Around the Basin 4 or 5 times now and they have never disappointed. Excellent bikes, great customer service (with the shuttle) and a new central location in the town. Always stop at Altitude on the way back We will certainly use them again in future

Self-Guided E-Bike Ride in the Gibbston Wine Valley
Fun e-bike ride with more than enough time for stops at 3 wineries. The views along the river were beautiful and there were only a few other bike riders on the trail. A lovely, peaceful day and the bikes were very well maintained! The trail was mostly easy to follow with a couple of tricky spots.

This was a really fun day! The service provided by Around the Basin was super. Especially the last minute scheduling change. You meet downtown and they bus you out towards Arrowtown , then fit your bike and safety talk. Give you the map and you're on your way. With the 3/4 day, we biked up to Arrowtown and had coffee. Highly recommend this as it was the most beautiful part of the ride and shaded. Then returned and started the winery tour in Gibbston Valley. Great wineries and beautiful views into the river canyon. You really don't need the E-Bike, but they made it lots of FUN! Highly recommend!

From beginning to end, it was a great trip. The pickup in Queenstown went well. The bikes were easy to operate. We stopped at the new Church winery, which is at the end of the trail. We were served some good wine and had great food enjoyed in an uncrowded peaceful setting. Josh picked us up on time and took care of the bikes. All we had to do was enjoy the trip.

You really don’t need the 3/4 day. 1/2 day is plenty. You also really don’t need an e-bike . It’s easily doable on a regular mountain bike. Beautiful scenery and good wine.

On our half day winery ride you will get to about 3 wineries maximum. With our 3/4 day option that you chose, there is a little more riding and you should have time to get to 3 - 4 wineries plus have time to enjoy lunch somewhere. In general most people comment that they wish they had more time but good to hear you had ample time even riding on regular bikes. Cheers for the review.

Amazing bike trip over undulating gravel tracks for first 10km then as soon as vineyards start easy 1-2km between them. Went with 3 boys aged 8 and 10. Some of the hills were a bit scary for 8 year old but even walking them up and down we still easily made it to 4 vineyards!
Would recommend as wine tasting is awesome ! And tracks not hard at all.

We had a fantastic day out on the trails!

Around the Basin was particularly accommodating, as my personal bike broke on the way to the pick up point. They had a spare bike for me and delivered my bike back to Queenstown!

Such a great day out celebrating a birthday. All the staff were incredibly friendly and made the experience even more memorable.

Thank you! I'll be back :)

We took the 3/4 day tour. Easy pick-up in town and fast bus-ride out to the drop-off point. Our driver Jase was informative gave us all the info we needed to have a great day. The riding was fairly easy with a few undulating hills, I had to get off and walk with my bike once or twice but my partner had no such troubles. We visited three wineries, could have done more if we rode a bit faster with less stops to take photos and watch bungy-jumpers! The scenery is just gorgeous on this ride and we only saw other bike riders on the path once, so relatively untouched and not crowded whatsoever.

This is a self guided biking tour. Awesome bikes and helmets provided. You depart from Arrowtown approx 930 am on a very well signed and beautiful bike trail down to Gibbston. On a slow pace you reach the wineries at about noon time just in the nick of time for a delicious lunch. Most highly recommend Gibbston Valley Vineyards to eat. All the vineyards are easily accessible from the trail. We had an awesome afternoon wine tasting and by the time we got picked up at the designated point 430 pm we had visited 4 places

Coming from the USA this activity does require some level of fitness. There are hills, quick downslopes and sharp curves on gravel road along the trail so you have to be careful. Also there are beautiful suspension bridges but if you are afraid of heights then this is probably not the right activity for you.

Overall had a fantastic time and would highly recommend it!!!!

It is pretty cool to be able to visit Arrowtown, ride a scenic fun trail with epic bridges, cross the bungy bridge and then still be able to explore the 7+ wineries in the Gibbston Valley... Queenstown by bike is brilliant! I'm glad you enjoyed your experience with us and thank you for taking the time to write such a good review.
