- lecons00Great commentary and unbeatable locationOn this day, we were blessed with beautiful blue skies. The drive to Milford was absolutely stunning, with lots of opportunities to stop and admire the snowy peaks. If I had more time I would have done some walks but, even if you leave early from Te Anau, it is a time crunch to get there in time for the morning cruise. We also had cheeky Kea’s try to pull apart my car whenever we stopped. I chose to stop at the free car park on Deepwater Basin Road. It is worth making note of this free parking location prior to arriving as you may not have cell reception to find Deepwater Basin Road on maps when you arrive in Milford (there is a sign post but it comes up fast). The walk took 23.5 minutes including stops (17 minutes on the way back as we picked up the speed) and was quite pleasant. Worth parking there and saving some money. We were on board the Lady Bowan. Commentary on the cruise could be heard everywhere on the boat. The host was very funny, made many jokes during the experience and was both informational and enjoyable (some hidden just for the adults). We got up close to the waterfalls and those standing outside were treated to a shower. The Underwater Observatory allowed us to see schools of fish very clearly, black coral which is hundreds of years old and even a shark which darted down to get some food. This is very rare, our guide said she had never seen a shark dive that low and close to the observatory before. The picnic lunch consisted of cheese & crackers, Whittakers chocolate, choc chip biscuit, mandarin, apple, a bag of crisps and a fresh chicken sandwich. Coffee and tea was also available for free throughout the cruise.
- Julescw111100Best way to Milford SoundBrilliant from beginning to end. Excellent driver with fantastic commentary. Coach was comfortable (maybe the heating could go up). Cataramarsn was great. Lunch very good.
- Georgina B00Queenstown to Milford Sound - flights and cruiseWe took the scenic flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound, the cruise and return flight to Queenstown. This was a fabulous way to experience the mountain ranges and the fjords! We had the special experience of flying in a small aircraft (4 passengers and the wonderful James … our pilot) … which meant we all had a window seat and had our own view from above and James provided great commentary about what we could see from the plane and where we were!. The cruise through the fjord was also comfortable and meant we had the best views of the waterway… heading to the Tasman sea!
- 1752luciel00Breathless viewsMy daughter and I are on a road trip around the south island, and Milford Sound was a must stop!! In researching, we were so happy to see this amazing nature cruise. We both love being outdoors and exploring nature, and this cruise had both. We weren't lucky enough to see many wildlife but the views of the mountains, waterfalls and the experience was priceless 💞 The skipper explained so many things and my personal conversation with him brought out his joy of his work. Thank you to all the staff, and the boxed lunch was simple and delicious.
- 230liannar00AmazingGreat experience, boat had heating, complimentary coffee, we ordered the picnic lunch which was perfect. The skipper on our boat was hilarious, entertaining and informative.
- norpatmat00BEST DAY EVER!!Wow, we truly had the very best day and I’m not sure if anything will ever top it. Keith was a wonderful driver/ guide. He has a soothing, calm tone and a whole heap of knowledge. Although the bus ride was long, it never felt it. We had a few stops along the way for bathroom, coffee, and photo opportunities. Keith went out of his way to make the journey enjoyable. The boat ride was also delightful and it certainly helps that we had stunning weather (winter sunshine). What made an already great day even more wonderful was the scenic flight back to Queenstown. Our pilot, Ryan, was excellent. We took off from Milford Sound and journeyed through the Fiord National Park. My face hurt from smiling. It was stunning and an experience I will never forget. Thank you.
- Inspiration48556100perfect day out with family..day was perfect.. weather.. conditions.. cruise and staff.. lunch was ok.. we had the buffet..felt it quite pricy i thought for the quality and options.. the fruit pineapple and kiwi fruit and lamington slices all gone by the time we had eaten and ready for some sweets.. but overall food was tasty..
- delllimond00Milford NZOh my goodness Keith the bus driver was incredible he was so knowledgeable about absolutely everything well done Keith if I could give home 11 stars out of 10 I would The captain of the Milford sound boat not so informative I have been on 2 cruises before and found this one to be very uninformative except for the dolphins which seemed to excite him
- alexandrahK5229QH00A Kiwi does MilfordMy 15 year old nephew and I were on the Milford/Observatory cruise on the 11th of July. Cloudy morning but by the return lap, most of the cloud had lifted to a beautiful sunny day. The captain provided a great commentary, as a Kiwi myself, I enjoyed the NZ quips throughout his dialog. All of the staff were lovely & informative both on board and at the Observatory. The nephew had a great time, loved the waterfalls and enjoyed the packed lunch! Sammie, chips, crackers, fruit and a biscuit(cookie). If driving yourself, certainly allow 4 full hours from queenstown - we arrived just in time after running from the paid carpark (10 minute walk fyi) and the boats do not wait. My only "complaint" was that there was no complimentary milo on board with the free tea and coffee! A Kiwi icon! I would certainly recommend Southern Discoveries to anyone!! We had an excellent time!
- CiaraMcAdden00Best day outI had the best day ever. The cruise was amazing but the kayaking experience crowned it off epicly. Our guide Akiko was soo lovely and tolerated our failed attempts at paddling until we got the hang of it. I honestly couldn't have been happier with our day our. I will definitely be back again.
- Climber0616714991200Best Cruise EverThe cruise was the hightlight of our trip. Our Captain's commentary was so good. Entertaining and informative.
- dimplesbear00Amazing experienceWe did this experience in the middle of winter and so glad that we decided to do the coach tour. It was really nice to be able to sit back and just enjoy the view, the ride and take it all in. Part of the road had been closed the day before due to snow and ice and we are use to icy roads but this was next level and glad to be not driving. The scenery is amazing, and our driver was friendly and knows the area. The cruise was great, and not many people on board so it was great to have space to move around and enjoy the time on the water. The underwater part was interesting and the water quite clear. It was a great experience and would recommend to others!
- 819dustinb00Milford SoundOur tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided us with a great experience. We would definitely recommend this tour to our friends and family.
- Wottinger00Best ValueThe vessel used is smaller than most of the other cruises which is nice not having so many people all competing to go out on the deck. A generous picnic lunch is provided. The under water observatory is informative and wonderful to see all the fish, sharks, crustaceans, sponges and other aquatic life that other cruises never see. The boat gave plenty of time to observe waterfalls and seals playing on the steep rocky shore.
- RodCee30000Put this on your itinerary!A beautiful trip around the fjord. The cruise was relaxing, not hurried and leaving at 10.30 meant we were 30mins earlier than 2 or 3 other cruises. This meant there were no other cruises around which added to the atmosphere. (Of course we saw other cruises on the return journey.) The stops at waterfalls allowed plenty of time to enjoy the sights and grab plenty of photos. I appreciated the tea and coffee - always good when the weather is a bit cool. The cruise is worth the 2 hours drive from Te Anua - 2 hours allows for icy roads and time to enjoy the beautiful landscape along the way. If you have any questions about tickets, booking conditions etc, the company are very quick to respond - great customer service.

Going to Milford Sound was an incredible experience and I would highly recommend it for the majestic scenery. However, I would not recommend booking with southern discoveries if you are going to be driven by Greg. He ruined the bus ride (which all together is about 11 hours) with his arrogance, misogyny, racism and politics.
He went on multiple inappropriate rants about various things including a rant over the microphone about the closure of the Tiwai smelter. He also made disparaging comments about previous customers, all who just happened to be women including describing customers he wanted to ‘throttle’. He went on about customers from different countries and made unprofessional and unnecessary comments.
The commentary was non-stop, painful and extremely unprofessional. A good bus driver should be non-judgemental, professional and be able to pronounce correctly māori names- this should all be part of our experience of New Zealand culture.
However, the bus itself was very comfy and we enjoyed its big windows including on the roof. The cruise was also good and the lunch was algood.
Really gutted that our experience was tainted by Greg’s unprofessionalism.

Such a great day! Great driver who has a vast amount of knowledge, the use of Te Reo was awesome for myself as i am Maori and it is so great listening to some of the stories my ancestors experienced. We stopped at a few places for photo opportunities and we are so blessed for such a beautiful country. The bus was cosy enough for a bus, nothing too great except for the views and the big windows to see the view - we sat up the front but we realised if we hadnt bought the extra "front seat" option, it wouldnt have mattered at all. The catamaran was great, clean toilets, great amazing staff, opportunity to buy hot food and snacks on board at a reasonable price that you could expect on a voyage like this. I dont have anything to complain about with this crew - i would go through them again in a heartbeat!

The journey to and from Milford Sound was both exhilarating and entertaining. Greg’s golden commentary and profound knowledge of the South was an enlightening experience. It made what could have been a long coach trip very quick and enjoyable. Every twist and turn revealed an authentic piece of New Zealand culture.
Greg went above and beyond by ensuring that we had a way back to Queenstown, as we were unable to book a scenic flight to Queenstown from Milford Sound.
We had a golden day on the cruise itself, where there was no sign of rain and we were able to enjoy Milford Sound in a way that is not commonly known for this place. Commentary on board the cruise was informative and the scenery truly justified why it is a wonder if the world.
Packed lunch included for an additional $20 pp was generous.
Highly recommend Southern Discoveries.

What a wonderful tour that we had yesterday, besides the magnificent sceneries and how beautiful this part of South Island is, I think Southern Discoveries’ little touches and outstanding service and hospitality has left a great lasting impression on my group.
From our driver Gabriel who threw in so much valuable information and knowledge about the region and where we went past, detailed explanations on names of places, and stories about recent events and their impacts on the region - to our guide on the cruise (whose name I cannot remember sorry) , again with wise knowledge about Milford Sounds and a cheeky sense of humour!
I visit Queenstown often every year to snowboard but never took the opportunity to explore more than the ski fields and boy am I happy that I had booked myself this tour. The places that we went to were just breathtaking. I might be bias to say the snow made it look 10 times better! ( but that is because I’m a not summer and sun person ).
But yes it really was the staff that elevated our experience and we were very thankful. Worth mentioning that the taxi that was supposed to pick us up in the morning was a few minutes late (which did not bother us AT ALL, we were enjoying the morning view from our hotel) - but southern discoveries went above and beyond and left us a sorry gift at our hotel which we only found out after arriving back in the evening. We could not believe it and were very touched by the gesture.
You’ve heard it all before, support local businesses. And it is still important to do so! Keep these tours and travel companies running for us and New Zealand’s future. Would love to come back with my little ones in the future for them to experience what we did. Thanks again Southern Discoveries!

We had the best day ever travelling from Te Anau to Milford Sound & back. Greg our driver, was the perfect balance of getting us safely and smoothly to and from our destination as well as entertaining 50 odd people with his absolutely hilarious commentary and comments. It made a long what could have been boring coach trip very quick and fun! Instructions of what to do and what not to do you were very clear and concise and the whole thing from go to Lowe was smooth /simple /easy completely stressed free. The cruise itself was excellent , extremely informative commentary was very interesting facts about the area both geologically and the history. I would highly recommend southern discoveries and we plan to do it all again in the future with our kids. Excellent!!

This was such an enjoyable experience! The nature and scenery is stunning and unique of course, and the Southern Discoveries service made a real difference. The tour felt like the 'premier option' for visiting Milford Sound from Queenstown, and it was very well organised. E.g we got on the coach at an intermediate stop just outside of central Queenstown - but it was clear that an effort had been made to keep seats available for people joining the coach after it departed central Queenstown. The coach itself was comfortable, and the driver was fantastic - he had very insightful commentary during the drive, delivered with great style, including a good dose of humour. The cruise in Milford Sound was great - the boat was modern and in good condition. The buffet lunch on board was very tasty, and I would strongly recommend including that option when buying tickets, because we were hungry by the time lunch came around and the quality of the lunch made a real difference to how we enjoyed the cruise (the buffet seems like a much better option that getting a lunch box with a sandwich, and there aren't really any other options for eating). Highly recommended, and I'll likely do it again one day!

My first time to Queenstown and so happy I choose this tour. Our coach driver was fun, informative and enthusiastic. I booked a premium seat so was able to video amazing scenery along the way. We stopped at a number of sites allowing us to take lots of pictures. The mirror lake was a site to behold. It had snowed the night before so the mountains were an amazing site. We spotted a kea and stopped to watch and film the antics of this funny bird. I enjoyed drinking glacier water straight from the river. The travel through the Homer Tunnel was amazing as well as hearing the history of it. The boat ride on Milford sound was breathtaking. It was wet, windy and misty which didn't matter as it added to the mystique of this amazing place. So many waterfalls to view. I can highly recommend this trip to everyone.

Thanks so much for this great review. We're so happy you had a great trip with us, those premium seats are definitely worth it to get the best views out the front of the coach. Milford on a misty wet day is pretty special. Hopefully we'll see you on a trip again.

If you are worried about the long day (5hr bus trip each way), don’t…It is absolutely worth it! Our bus driver (Keith) was amazing - his commentary on the way was very informative and he stopped many times on the way for bathroom breaks, photo opportunities and leg-stretching. We were very lucky to get active snow fall near Milford Sound and Keith stopped the bus to let us all jump out and have a play - it was magical! Milford sound itself is just breathtaking. The whole day is the highlight of our trip to Queenstown. We were here in early August and I strongly recommend dressing warm (even for the bus). If you have an extra coat to bring for over your legs on the bus, I recommend it.

This tour is highly recommended! From booking our tour at the Queenstown office where the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, to the moment we boarded the bus we knew that this tour was shaping up to be a great one!
The coach is modern, spacious and comfortable (even for one of us being over 6ft) and has a great glass roof to take in the view. Our tour guide Greg was awesome. He explained the day in detail to the group, provided some great local advice, knowledge and combined this with a great sense of humor which made the day really enjoyable, comfortable and go very quick.
The picnic lunch was filling and delicious. The cruise around Milford Sound was amazing and the boat modern and spacious and it also gets up close to a waterfall and we even lucky to see some dolphins too!
We have both traveled a lot around the world and this tour is up with the best. Many thanks Greg and the team at Southern Discovery, we will recommend, 5 stars!

Wow this review has really made our day. Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your feedback. We're so glad you had such a great day with us. It's been so awesome taking our fellow kiwi's to Milford Sound on our coach trips. Did you know we actually have a few less seats in our coach to allow for more comfort and extra legroom. We'll be sure to pass on all your lovely comments to the team, hopefully we'll see you back in Milford Sound soon.

Does this trip cover admission costs (if any) to Eglinton valley, Mirror lakes and Chasm walk as described in other trips

Hi, There were stops along the way at Eglinton Valley and Mirror lakes. About a 10 min walk at mirror lakes but we did not stop at the Chasm walk car park. I reckon it was because there had been a big dump of snow a week prior so most of the places were still not cleared for walks.
Hope this helps! Cheers
