Overview
Combine hiking on the famous Routeburn Track with a canyoning adventure in Mt. Aspiring National Park on a single active tour from Queenstown. Hike along the Routeburn Track while a guide points out the endemic flora and fauna, then reach the canyonlands, where you will rappel and swim through the caves, canyons, and pools. Refuel with a picnic lunch to wind up your strenuous tour.
What to Expect
Check in at the Adventure Centre, right in the heart of Queenstown at least 15-minutes prior to departure. Lockers are available for use to secure your belongings during your trip. Your guide for the day will then give you a short trip briefing all necessary paperwork will be completed, then you’ll be ready to begin your adventure!
Drive for approximately 15-minutes to the purpose built operations base where you will be fitted out in a wetsuit, booties, a helmet and all necessary safety equipment including harnesses.
You will then begin a spectacular 40-minute drive along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, into the Routeburn Valley, Mount Aspiring National Park. Once you are geared up at the Routeburn Hut, you'll set off on a 25-minute hike along the world famous Routeburn Track. Then it’s time for some hard out adventure.
Once everyone is ready the trip leader will give an in-depth safety briefing and explain about the canyon. You will then embark on a 2.5 to 3-hour decent of the canyon. A number of Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed in this cave, so fans might recognise a few spots!
As you start your descent through the canyon, you’ll be abseiling, leaping off rock ledges into foaming pools, and swimming/sliding down the canyon stream. After your canyoning experience you will be provided a full picnic lunch to enjoy in the beautiful setting.
This canyon is suited to people that have a good level of fitness, high water confidence and a real sense of adventure! The minimum age is 15, and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
