About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 181suzym0 contributionsGreat family trip and really helpful and sensible teamWe had intended to do the full 32km ride but were gently encouraged at check-in to consider one of the shorter less challenging rides. Our son hadn't ridden for a while and as soon as he got on the bike we realised the longer ride would not be possible. The team were super flexible and gave us options and advice. We opted for the shorter route and they picked us up at the agreed spot. My only quibble was that the gears on the bike my son had were too stuff for him to turn them down (he's 6 years old). So we had to stop every time there was a hill and mostly had to walk up the hills, which made for a much longer ride than we'd planned! All in all a good day though.Written February 12, 2025
- Robert L0 contributionsThe Arrowtown to Queenstown bike track is a must do, the scenery changes are amazing! The ride from Arrowtown to Queenstown was amazing, it is a must do. The scenery is ever changing and the ride at points can be a little challenging especially navigating the very high suspension bridges. We stopped for a swim, watched bungee jumping and we all said on future holidays we should investigate bike rides in these locations (def e-bikes). My 4 not 5 star review is the customer experience ad some of the interactions with shop staff was less than impressive. When we arrived and checked in I was glad we got checked in with the staff member I did, I watched and listened to the other staff member who was borderline rude to the guests she was supposed to be serving. We then were collected by the bus driver who was very pleasant and then final before the ride the gentleman who did our safety presentation was excellent, great presenter. We then went off on our ride as we tried to conquer the harder hills (thank god e had the e-bikes) my daughter and I could see my wife struggling a bit. We discussed what gears we used and speed of e-bike with her and off we went again. She was still struggling but we just thought it was user error. About 2/3 of the way my wife & I exchanged bikes and immediately I could see it was not user error but a faulty bike with there seeming to be an issue with the chin/gears. I road the bike with issue most of the way back to Queenstown as my wife was definitely more exhausted then my daughter and myself who had a great experience on our original bikes. On getting back to the office unfortunately we were greeted by the staff member I had seen provide poor service in the morning, on advising her we had issues with the chain, she was completely uninterested and dismissive and changed the subject to focusing on us returning our helmets to the rack. So as I said the ride is a must but the customer experience is a bit 50/50!Written February 3, 2025
- Adam D0 contributionsGreat way to exploreHired e bikes as a family of four to do the Arrowtown to Arthurs Point ride. Driven to Arrowtown where we were given our bikes and clear directions. Had plenty of time to explore Arrowtown before setting off. E bikes meant we all stayed together regardless of riding ability. It also meant we got to our pick up way in advance so decided to extend our cycle back into Queenstown. Great day out on the trails!Written January 16, 2025
- NCHKCA0 contributionsSharing details I couldn’t find in advanceSharing details I couldn’t find in advance…The 21-mile route that starts in Arrowtown follows the Arrow River Bridges trail, then turns onto the Twin Rivers Trail, and finally the Frankton track by waterfront near the airport, on down to downtown. There were 2-3 short segments on country lanes used by cars, but I never encountered a car. No restrooms at check-in shop in CBD, and in Arrowtown you have to go away from the trail entrance a bit to find the public toilets. The quality of the trail is pretty much as advertised, almost all groomed gravel. There are many hairpin turns to watch out for. I went on a sunny day, but wish I had brought sunglasses that transmitted more light, as you’re often in the shade while you’re navigating turns and such. My e-bike was a light duty mountain bike with front suspension only and a slightly cushy seat. The power was good - 3 levels - I used level 1 almost all the way, and level 2 only for a few of the steep hills. I am not a super-serious biker and almost always ride on roads - but I was able to do this trail in 1.5 hours (plus one brief water break stop). This trail requires enough attention that you aren’t seeing the scenery very much - so I could see dedicating more time to the ride if you want to stop more often and take in the scenery. The whole thing is a great value for the money. It’s a great ride - enjoy!Written January 12, 2025
- bonniew610 contributionsSee something outside the cityTrying an ebike was a novel experience but so much fun. The scenery is spectacular. The crew are helpful fitting you to the right bike. The trail is very manageable even for us novice riders and challenging for more experienced who choose to ride over the hanging bridges. We stopped along the way to watch the bungy jumpers (that is something a much younger and wilder person might enjoy). The cafe at the end of the route was great even for us who don’t drink wine. The chocolate gelato will not be forgotten.Written November 28, 2024
- Lee C0 contributionsA rewarding experienceWe were able to move our reservation up a day due to predicted rain. The e-bike upgrade was very reasonable also and we were able to make the 60k loop to Arrowtown and back during the day ride. Manager of shop was very pleasant and accommodating before and after our ride. Strongly recommend.Written November 25, 2024
- Queen_Of_Hearts250 contributionsInjured person left strandedWe did a bike tour with this company. Things started out fine but during the trail the bike chain came off one bike. We were mid way through the trail and this ate up a chunk of riding time as we waited while another helpful cyclist helped us fix the bike. We got back on the trail and toward the end one of our party fell off the bike and was injured. We arrived at the pick up point and tended to the injury knowing the driver would be arriving soon. We waited and waited but the driver never arrived. We noticed the bikes had been picked up and they had left us stranded 25 kilometers away from any help. We called the company and told them what had happened and that someone was injured but staff were unhelpful and kept saying we didn’t meet the driver at the pick up point and would need to take a taxi instead. Not one staff member asked if the injured person was okay or what they could do to help. When we said they had our number, they could have called us to check if we were okay when they picked up our bikes, they had no answer to this . Staff were only interested in arguing and patronizing us rather than trying to find a solution. We asked that a manager call us but we have not received one call from them. Not even to say ‘sorry to hear you were injured - how are you doing?’ Absolutely shocking service!!! This company has a duty of care to the people using their services and they failed to meet this duty of care. People in our group had used this business before at least 4 times and mentioned they normally come in to the winery to check that every passenger in on board before they leave however they did not check if we were there or not. Reading the other negative reviews I can see we are not the only ones that have been left stranded. They are only interested is getting money from you that’s it. I am going to report them to WorkSafe for their absolute lack of care to the health and safety of their customers. If you use the company make sure you do so knowing they will leave you stranded in the middle of no where - no matter if you’re a child, the elderly or injured.Written November 24, 2024
- chempy0 contributionsPlenty to see along the way!Our original tour happened on a super rainy day, and we decided to postpone it at the very very last minute after spending 5 mins in Arrowtown, as the rain was not stopping…. The driver was kind enough to come back to pick us and send us back to Queenstown which was much appreciated! Our tour was postponed to another day and we truly enjoyed the experience, together with my teenager kids! Great trail and plenty to see along the way in a great weather!Written November 23, 2024

- Ezra M0 contributionsQueenstown wineries on e-bike. Exciting, enjoyable, beautiful scenery, but WATCH OUT for the edges of the cycle path!Around the basin e-bike Queenstown half day winery trip Overall I felt the experience on this outing was Excellent, Enjoyable, exhilarating, and set in Beautiful scenery. We were fortunate to have good weather which was a big plus. There were a Variety of wineries to visit, including Brennans ( located about 1km or 2 beyond The Church, which was the pick up point at the end of this outing) and the Gibbston winery. I’d recommend both for pleasant wines and staff. The Bikes were in good condition except for one minor issue. My report on this issue was received with gratitude and an assurance that it would be looked at. A further important note about the bikes. There are a Variety of saddle types on the bikes, from the very thin bone hard type like on a regular road/racing bike, to wide well padded saddles and a range in between. Check that the saddle on your bike is ok for you before you depart and request a modification or alternative if necessary or desired. There was one small landslide partially blocking route, after wet weather in the previous few days. This was passable on foot and carrying or pushing one’s bike. It was in the process of being cleared when we passed. Three of the four of us really enjoyed the whole outing. One found the outing fairly scarey in terms of the proximity of the cycle path edge to a very high and steep valley side with falls a long way down to the river or valley floor very easy to imagine. In some places there was a fence at the side of the path, offering protection against a fall. However in most places where the falls are highest there is no edge protection. This is by far the biggest and most significant negative about this trip. While this issue didn’t impact on my enjoyment of the trip during the outing itself, I feel the fear is entirely justified. In places the path is a little narrow, and the edge is unprotected in these places. The height is very substantial. At bends, if you were travelling at speed (easy to imagine) the surface might not have the stability or grip to keep you on the path. I suggest that the path, in the interests of the safety of cyclists and any other users would benefit substantially from fencing along these edges to reduce the risk cyclists falling off the edge of the path. I don’t know if anyone has fallen off the paths here, and I hope no one has, of course. However it is not a stretch of the imagination to see it happening in my opinion, and I hope the issue is addressed, so as to make this ride safer, and keep the ride open for people to enjoy. I think this last point, making it safer and keeping it open is very important. This type of outdoor activity is very much part of the good side of things in being in NZ, a like me, visiting NZ on holiday.Written October 30, 2024
- lizrath0 contributionsWet Wild and WonderfulThe rain didn't hold us back, however, it is preferable to go on a sunny day. The bike company gave us a poncho which made a bit of a difference in the rain. First time on a E-bike and I thoroughly recommend them for going up hills. The rain didn't dampen our spirts and the Gibbston winery was amazing and a welcome relief. The scenery is quite impressive on the way. Be careful when you're booking with trip advisor as it stated there would be no refund for cancellation, so we took the punt and enjoyed the scenery and wineries, even if was a tad wet. The bike company were very accommodating in picking us up when we called it "a day".Written October 1, 2024
- MikeC22370 contributionsScenic riding adventure for all the familyWell organized and trail easy to follow. Meet at shop at 3 Searle Lane. Staff were brilliant and provided a great briefing and route map. Mini bus trip to Arrowtown was pleasant with Shane our driver providing some great local tips. After given your helmet and bike, stop at Arrowtown Bakery for morning tea. The track is fairly easy with a couple of steep sections. Scenery is amazing. Take water and snacks. We did the track in 3.5hrs with teenage kids. Electric bikes are available. Great day for all ages.Written September 18, 2024
- Departure299046113400 contributionsDo It!We all had a great day of riding! We were driven from Queenstown to Arrowtown where we collected our E-bikes and received all the information we needed for our trip back to Queenstown. Most of our group had never biked this far/long before so were apprehensive before we started, but that quickly changed as we made our way through the fantastic scenery! The trail is clearly signposted so no chance of getting lost and staff beforehand were very informative as well! This first ride has given me inspiration to do more cycling in New Zealand if/when I get the opportunity!! Definitely recommend Around the Basin!!Written June 26, 2024
- cpb110 contributionsIf you enjoy biking, don't miss this one! This was a fantastic day. Our driver who shuttled us from Queenstown to Arrowtown was very friendly and informative. The E-bikes were great and the ride back to Queenstown was everything that I had hoped it would be. The views were wonderful and the scenery and terrain was very diverse from start to finish. I would do it again in a hearbeat!Written June 17, 2024

This was SO fun. We loved the adventuring of the cycle and then the R&R of the wine, food, cheese and laughs at the wineries. We ended the day with a lot of wine bottles clinking our bags that we purchased. I'd highly recommend this but also recommend - lots of water, sunscreen and deep pockets for buying all the delish food, it's not expensive but all so good so you don't want to miss out on any.

Loved the whole experience! Very well organised so the transfers went smoothly and the ride was fairly flat so we could have been on any type of bike. Wineries were lovely - surroundings, food and wine were all very much enjoyed!

Such a cool thing to do. We hired E bikes at extra cost but worth it for us 50plus gals. Great driver and well prepared with info. Managed to get to 4 wineries including a gorgeous 3 course lunch at Gibbston Valley. Highly recommend even on a showery day.

You are picked up from Queenstown and driven in a very nice bus to Arrowtown where you are given a briefing on riding through the Gibbston Valley.
It is well organised and the bikes and equipment are pretty good.
The cost is only your bike hire and transfer to and from Arrowtown - you get collected from a smallish pub in the Valley on the return run (or where ever else you might be).
The scenery is great and the ride is very enjoyable.
What was disappointing was the proprietors of the wineries ripping off the tourists. You sample very small quantities of wine at very high prices.
That kind of ruined it for me and made the day disappointing. Effectively you pay up to $30 for the equivalent of one small glass of wine (120mls). Cheese boards are extra (understandably) but I would not have done this tour if I knew how expensive the wine tasting was.
Could have been so much better.

Hello Simon - very pleased to hear that you were happy with all your service from our business. It is a shame you felt the wineries in Gibbston were ripping you off - you are the first I can personally recall in nearly 10 years of operation to give this feedback. Most NZ wineries charge for tastings and $10 to $15 for 5 - 8 substantial tastings is by NZ standards fairly good value. One of the wineries does offer free tastings and a number refund the cost of the tasting if you buy a bottle of wine. What the wineries charge is out of our control, and I have not heard of anyone paying $30 for a small glass of wine - it may have been a very premium vintage. We generally get great feedback from most of our customers about what a fantastic day they've had.

We booked the full day "Bike the Wineries Tour" - self guided - and it was my husband and I and one of our daughters. It truly was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand and we felt young again riding alongside the beautiful scenery. The fellow who drove us and picked us up from Arrowtown (unfortunately can't remember his name) was so comical and chatty he had all of us on the bus laughing hysterically. We are Canadian and he had lots of funny things to say about us lol. Everything with our bike day was so organized, the bikes were great, wine was great and as promised they picked up any bottles of wine we purchased along the way. We felt truly alive by the end of our day and would fully recommend anyone considering booking with this company. Thanks and we hope to come again!

We were disappointed that the bus did not pick us up from our accommodation as advertised and as a result we missed the first part of the day.
They said they emailed but we did not receive and they did not attempt to call or message.
Customer service needs a lot of work!
The ride was beautiful and the wine was delish

Thanks for your review - it's a shame that you did not receive the email from us asking for you to walk to our shop in the morning, if someone has not checked in we do always try to call to see where guests are before leaving but unfortunately we could not get through to you on the number that was given with the booking. I'm glad that you did enjoy the ride and wineries after we took you out on the next shuttle.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Bike the Wineries. Our day started with a walk through the quaint town of Arrowtown and then a fairly easy ride along a riverside path. The scenery was stunning as the river descended into a deep gorge and the waters turned a brilliant shade of turqoise blue. I chose to upgrade to an ebike and I'm glad I did because my husband who is a seasoned rider struggled with some of the hills while I breezed along. The wine and cheese tastings were fabulous and there was plenty of time to visit all of the establishments and have lunch besides. Our best day so far.

We took this tour when recently in Queenstown. We enjoyed the day immensely and we would thoroughly recommend Around the Basin Bike Tours as they facilitated the day brilliantly.
The bikes were in really good condition, the directions were clear and the interaction with the crew who took us to the start and returned us home was terrific - highly professional but very engaging.

This was Tour #1 of three winery cycle tours we took during our two-month vacation in New Zealand. We loved it so much we decided to do it again when we were in Blenheim and Napier. We booked this tour through Around the Basin Bike Tours, who provided bikes, helmets, maps, and shuttle service at the beginning and end of the ride. We cycled from Arrowtown to Gibbston Valley on the Arrow River Bridge Trail and the Queenstown Trail, crossing suspension bridges and riding through farmland with spectacular mountain views and along deep gorges with turquoise water. In Gibbston Valley, the heart of the wine-making country, we visited numerous winery cellar doors and a fantastic craft brewery with wood fired pizza! The trail was easy and the beverages were outstanding. We will definitely do it again.

Was a gorgeous ride and bought some great wine. Only problem was the standard bike seats were quite uncomfortable after 8 hrs of biking. Suggest requesting a wider more padded seat if available. Otherwise no complaints!

No, the lovely team will pick up all of your bottles you purchase, so you don't have to bike with them.

We have potential bike riders that prefer beer over wine. I'm assuming the breweries on the ride sell beer ??
Written February 20, 2019
Yes they do, there is a brewery and a tavern, and a couple of the other wineries sell beer as well.
