- tristanb7610 contributionsInformative and fantastic kiwi experienceThis was a great experience. The park showcases lots of native New Zealand bird species, as well as some reptiles and fish. The kiwi talks are well worthwhile - not only was it very informative, but it was a great experience to see kiwis up close. Conservation is at the heart of the Kiwi Park, and they do fantastic work.Written September 30, 2024
- TheGoodPlace190 contributionsThe heart of Queenstown - don’t miss this one!I had a great time at the Kiwi Park! I spent three hours there and attended the Kiwi encounter and conservation show, which were both very engaging and educational. The staff were so kind and welcoming, they were all willing to chat and offer more information. I also learned a lot that I didn’t already know about bees and New Zealand honey which was an added positive. The only downside (which isn’t the fault of the staff or park) is that several other visitors ignored the rules and took flash photography of the Kiwis which was really disappointing - please don’t do that if you visit! I’d gladly come back and bring more people with me, a highlight of my trip to Queenstown for sure.Written January 24, 2024
- Suz B0 contributionsFascinating! We spent 2 hours at the Kiwi Park this morning and loved it. The young lady who did the conservation show at 1100 was brilliant, so knowledgeable and a credit to the park. We loved seeing all the birds up close but the Kiwi encounter is very special. You need to take time for your eyes to adjust but we managed to see all 4 Kiwis! It was just amazing, they move quickly and sometimes they come right up close to the glass.Written January 14, 2024
- TJouer0 contributionsAmazing wildlife sanctuary built by a private family in the heart of QueenstownKiwi Park is an educational experience in the heart of Queenstown that is not to be missed. We enjoyed the pre-paid entry, the audio self-guided tour, and the Kiwi encounter. The trail contains many exhibits that wind through the hill and nature streams. Some of the endangered birds are in cages where they can be readily seen on branches or on the ground. The Kiwis are restricted as far as taking photos and exposure to light, so it’s a good idea to see the show. We also enjoyed the habitats that are available to walk through. The Māori cultural exhibits were interesting. Tip: Spend about 2-3 hours here. Dress appropriately in walking shoes and bring water.Written January 13, 2024
- EllenLovesHawaii0 contributionsWonderful wildlife parkThis little park is wonderful, lots of birds and even reptiles. Plus 4 kimi in a dark enclosure where they can be seen actively hunting for food. The enclosures are large and feel natural. The animals are well-treated. The conversation talk is very informative.Written December 27, 2023
- 778micheleh0 contributionsFun to view the KiwisI've been fascinated by the Kiwi, so it was wonderful to see them in captivity at this bird park. It took a while to adjust to the darkness but then you could see them in their natural habitat. Many other bird species to view as well.Written December 16, 2023
- timjstark0 contributionsBetter than I thought...I am not that into birds...however, I had a really good time here. We arrived just in time for the 10 AM Kiwi "Viewing". I would recommend going in a few minutes prior as it takes quite a while for one's eyes to adjust to the total darkness. We stumbled around attempting to see one of the four resident Kiwis while our eyes gradually adjusted. Soon, a naturalist gave an informal presentation of the four...and they were all just delightful in their own ways. After that presentation, we wandered through the various and lovely pathways, seeing tons of birds with excellent signage describing what we were seeing. Eventually we attended the Conservation Show (both the Kiwi and Conservation Show are included in the price of admission.). The Conservation Show was excellent as well; both informative and humorous. The little cafe and honey shop as well as the compact gift show all are very new and zen adding up to a better than expected visit to the Kiwi Park.Written November 29, 2023
- mdh9690 contributionsKiwi ParkWe got off the gondola and took a walk through Kiwi Park. It was OK, but nothing really exciting. We got to see a kiwi in the tour, but the rest of the park was nice, but not worth the $52.00 admission fee.Written November 2, 2023
- travbud10 contributionsCool Kiwi ExperienceOk, so this requires a little explanation. The price of this experience is $50 and so a little high. The money does go to support the preservation of the park and the animals. My original expectation was that this was going to be an average animal park with little or nothing to do and so I was hesitant to do it. They do some shows where they introduce you to different animals, mostly birds which is fun and relatively short. It is a short walk around with a variety of different bird habitats and enclosures. However, there is really only one reason to visit and that is to see the Kiwi birds. Please read the below because it should help you in determining whether this experience is right for you. The Kiwis are nocturnal birds and as such, they have designed an enclosure for them that is pitch black. When we visited they had 5 birds in total and each in their own enclosure within the main visiting area. They do an almost hourly talk on the birds, what they eat, etc. which is helpful. You must commit some time to visiting them because you need a while for your eyes to adjust to the very low light environment. You cannot hold them, touch them or even take pictures of them. At first you will not be able to see them at all as they are both fast and your eye sight will be poor. After about 10 minutes, your eyes will adjust to the light. Each bird is kept separate and you can see each of them individually. They are quite active and running around with their long beaks. They are quite cute and have a funny walk. We spent nearly 45 minutes with them and seeing each of them. Once your eyes have adjusted you will be able to seem them from across the room easily and you can watch them wander around, eating and jumping (they don’t fly), which is most enjoyable. Again, if this experience or the price does not sound good to you, I would frankly skip it entirely as this is the real highlight. If you are interested in seeing a Kiwi, which is nearly impossible otherwise, and would enjoy spending time watching them after allowing your eyes to adjust to the light, then this is a wonderful experience. Just providing this detail to help you make an informed decision.Written October 28, 2023
- Pumpkin200 contributionsKiwis & conservationWe were looking forward to seeing Kiwis, and were not disappointed! On arrival you have the option to collect a head set to give you a self guided tour, it would help greatly if the numbers for each stop were more prominently displayed, we found it a bit of a nuisance to have to hunt for the corresponding numbers. The trails/walkways could be a bit of a challenge for some with mobility issues. Don’t miss the conservation show, the keeper who ran this did an outstanding job, we found it most interesting. Although I’m not sure about the rats 😂. The Kiwi encounter was good, we were lucky enough to see the kiwi & it was very busy hunting for its lunch!Written October 27, 2023
- TR820 contributionsOverpriced and not so greatWe went here today as our eldest daughter loves birds, the park itself is surprisingly large with a fair bit of walking between enclosures and some hills which may be problematic for young kids or elderly. We went to the show and saw only one bird fly from one perch to another and a possum for about 2mins - it was pretty poor particularly compared to shows we have seen in Australia such as Currumbin Sanctuary and Australia Zoo- the kiwi enclosures are good and worth a look to see a rare bird. All in all it was very disappointing compared to other bird experiences we have seen and at almost $120 per family probably double what I would think it is worth, I know it goes to conservation, but felt a bit like a tourist trap.Written October 4, 2023
- 808giggles0 contributionslove those kiwiI checked out the Kiwi Park near the base of the Skyline gondola. It was worth the admission. The tuataras weren’t in their reptile house but I got to see one during their conservation show. Pretty cool looking! The set up of the park was good as you walked along several pathways. I loved the Kiwi house and enjoyed the guide talk. I saw 3 out of the 4 kiwis there. The various native birds looked healthy and had places to hide if they didn’t want to be seen. I love that the buff weka walked past you to get to the other side of the enclosure.Written July 3, 2023
- bellaeleven0 contributionsCute Kiwis!!Very good park to visit to learn all about the kiwis plus other native NZ species and how they are trying to stop/eliminate the introduced animals that have devastated their numbers. It was a cold and rainy day when we went but it didn't stop us from seeing everything. Complimentary umbrellas provided and they even had blankets and heated hot water bottles for the sit-down area where the keeper talks are held, it was also undercover. All the staff were very friendly.Written June 23, 2023

- SummerJourney220 contributionsBe aware of steep hillsVisitors should be aware that the park entrance is located at the top of a steep hill near the Skyline in Queenstown, and the whole park is set on the side of a hill so you are walking up and down steep hills throughout your whole visit. Unfortunately, one of our group had a knee injury and was not able to participate in this visit as a result. We noticed however, that the terrain of the park was not mentioned on any of the tourist information or pamphlets we had.Written May 1, 2023

It was nice to see the birds and geckos and trout and the kids really enjoyed the headphone sets we were given that had recordings about each exhibit. For a visitor to NZ who is only going to Queenstown and wants to see kiwi and tuatara, I think this would be a great place to visit. We went on an entry-by-donation special, so it was good value, but I don't think I would have been willing to pay the full ticket price, as a New Zealander, since there are lots of other places you can see many of the same animals for free or cheaper entry fees, such as the Queenspark aviaries and tuatara in Invercargill which are free, or Orana Park or Willowbank in Christchurch which are cheaper and have more animals. Although it's good that some of the money goes to support breeding kiwi for release back into the wild so it is money spent for a good cause, and it's a peaceful, pleasant place to hang out for a couple of hours, with a cafe, clean toilets and a conservation show (which we missed, being there at the wrong time).

My husband and I absolutely enjoyed our afternoon here. Admission price includes an audio guide, map, and admission to their shows/feeding displays where you get to see some of the animals up close. It is a locally owned and run organization and they explain about habitat loss, invasive (pest) species, and other aspects that contribute to the health of endemics. They have a kiwi breeding program where they re-introduce the North Island Brown Kiwi back into the wild, in cooperation with DOC. The gift shop is quite nice, and all of the employees were welcoming, enthusiastic about their jobs, and went out of their way to ensure we saw what we hoped to. If the weather turns bad while you're there, it's no problem because your receipt allows you to be readmitted for two more days, which makes it good value in my opinion. If I had kids I would definitely bring them as I think they would be enchanted.

A relaxing, enjoyable & informative experience in the heart of Queenstown. Over the years the family owned attraction has transformed 5 acres of land to deliver open aviaries and enclosures enabling visitors to get up close & personal with iconic NZ bird life including rare & endangered species. The opportunity to see Kiwi in close to their natural habitat shouldn't be missed. Admission includes portable audio tour commentary, entertaining conservation show & Kiwi encounter feeding. The staff are really genuine & their enthusiasm & commitment for what they are doing in conservation take the park from simply a tourist attraction to another level.
Allow about 2 hours for a leisurely walk through the grounds taking in all the exhibits, audio commentary & shows although it could be seen at a faster or slower pace..
Facilities are modern, well maintained & clean. There's a shop & cafe...we enjoyed coffee sitting by the wood burner on a chilly day.
Only downside, might be a bit pricey for a family outing but if you're looking for an alternative to the (expensive) adrenaline filled activities Queenstown offers, definitely put the Birdlife Park on your list. The variety of NZ birdlife you will encounter is as good as it gets. And you don't have to walk the Milford or Routeburn tracks !

Being Central Otago locals, we took the opportunity of visiting while the entry ticket was a 'koha' which made it very affordable for us. We were so pleased we made the visit. It is such a fantastic place that is showcasing our local fauna and flora. The information provided on boards, and the self guided audio tour. The Kiwi Encounter and the Conservation show are a highlight. The work that the 'Park' is doing in conservation is to be applauded.
We were particularly pleased to see so many families with young children visiting and perhaps that was the direct result of entry by koha!!! It would be great to see this extended, or maybe have specials for locals and local tourists alike from time to time.

This friendly, family-owned wildlife park supports captive breeding to protect the native birds. The 30 minute show was clever and informative, and everyone got to get close to the big NZ reptile Tuatara. We enjoyed seeing the kiwi birds, as we hadn't seen them anywhere else in NZ. These flightless birds were tricky to see in the enclosure but quite rewarding once we found them. There's a nice gift shop, too.

We have lived in Queenstown for seven years and have walked/cycled past the Kiwi Birdlife Park many times, but never entered as we thought it was just a very small enclosure. That was until this Sunday, thanks to an article in Mountain Scene about the Park, and the beginning of a 'Pancake Sunday' promotion.
As we entered we were met by Paul (the General Manager) who was exceptionally pleasant and helpful. My wife was not so well so she did a short walk around, and watched the Conservation Show. The show was entertaining and informative, and we learned a few things we were not aware of, including the very surprising information about the Kiwi egg. My wife then went to the cafe and had a coffee and a most delicious fresh hot pancake, with maple syrup & blueberries. I carried on around the park and was very impressed by the extensive grounds with something of interest around every corner.
I joined my wife for a coffee (unfortunately the pancakes had all sold out, so get in early), and we had a long chat with Paul, and met his lovely wife and two young sons.
I became a 'Friend of The Park' (only $60) which grants you unlimited access for the year, and intend to take my boys there to enjoy everything on offer.
Highly recommend.

We paid almost half the pre covid price and this seemed fair and comparable with similar attractions in Christchurch. Definitely go to the conservation show (though there was no falcon unfortunately). The kiwi are more active immediately after feeding time. Helpful staff. The Maori content should be removed until it can be done meaningfully, which they are saving up for.

Amazing park!
I am surprised this park isn't on many 'must do' lists. This is the one thing I would recommend people do in Queenstown. I have been to similar parks around the country, I think this park is probably the best one!
The park is surprising big. There are audio guides to listen to along the way. These are very informative and great to listen to.
This park has the best kiwi enclosures I have ever seen. They are beautiful and appear perfectly suited for these little birds. The kiwi encounter was very informative with time to chat to the keeper and ask questions.
There is a huge amount of NZ birds and lizards in the park. Lots of these are part of breeding programs or rehabilitation. I love that some of the birds that would not survive in the wild are able to find a home here.
The park has native trees that you can purchase for a donation. You pick your little tree and put a name tag on it. When the park plants the tree they will email you a photo of where it has been planted.
There is a Cafe and gift shop as well.

Today I went to the conservation show. Michelle the lead speaker was amazing. Very informative and took her time to explain about each animal and how the evolution of wild life has taken place. It's hard to address a big group of people without losing your trail of thought. She bossed it! I would 100% recommend going to the bird life park and the girls on the front desk were super friendly and got our headsets ready. Thanks bird park!

I had my doubts about going in, as I'm really not keen on anything that feels like a zoo, or exploiting animals for profit. However, I shouldn't have worried, as the animals at this place were really well cared for and were there for the right reasons (conservation and educational purposes). They raise Kiwis here that are then to be released into wild once they are big enough to stand a chance against predators.
As Kiwis are nocturnal, they are kept in darkened enclosures so that visitors can see them during the day time. They really are surreal to watch, and it's incredible to be able to get so close to them, whilst not disturbing them at all.
The park also has several other bird species, and runs multiple talks throughout the day. If you miss one of these (and you shouldn't, they're really good!) you will still get given one of their audio sets and this guides you through the different sections.
I only came across this place by accident whilst I was near the cable car. I didn't have time to do both, and I don't regret choosing this place one bit.
