About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- katejW8185YP0 contributionsFantastic tour for Milford Sound day tripMilford Sound was beautiful and we got to see lots of stops along the way. Our guide, Ross was excellent and very knowledgeable - we learned lots about the wildlife on the walk and of the area whilst we were on route. The cruise was delightful - it was a smaller boat and wasn’t too busy so everyone could see everything they wanted too. The quality of the provided lunch was a nice surprise - way above what I expected!Written October 6, 2024
- J5209FOjohnb0 contributionsGreat excursionI highly recommend this excursion. The group was small and the tour bus comfortable. Our guide, Ro, was great. She was knowledgeable about the area, told interesting stories and made just the right number of photo stops and short hikes.Written October 5, 2024
- initiative19720 contributionsFull-Day Milford Sound Tour guided by Ross was awesomeOur Full-Day Milford Sound Tour with Cruise and Walks from Te Anau, organised by Trips & Tramps, was truly fantastic. The journey, however, didn’t begin smoothly as an unexpected avalanche blocked the road, putting our cruise at risk. Fortunately, we received word that the road would reopen by 1 pm. Our guide and driver, Ross, was exceptional—both knowledgeable and deeply attentive to the group’s needs. Having lived in Te Anau for over 50 years, Ross shared his vast knowledge of the region’s geography, climate, economy, wildlife, and plants, making the trip informative and enjoyable. His pride and passion for Te Anau were evident in his engaging storytelling, reflecting the resilience and spirit of the local community. We were lucky enough to witness breathtaking scenery, avalanche debris, and even spot dolphins, fur seals, and penguins along the way. Ross’s expert driving through the mountainous terrain ensured we returned to the hotel safely and on time. He is truly one of the best guides we’ve ever had, and we’re eager to experience Trips & Tramps' service again when we return to Te Anau.Written September 24, 2024
- pkh2130 contributionsLush rainforest walk!We were picked up by P.C. of Trips and Tramps from our hotel and made our way with 8 other passengers as we made the drive to Milford Sound for an 11 hour adventure. We drove through Fiordland National Park. At 12,607 km, it is the country's largest national park - making up half of the South West of the New Zealand World Heritage Area. On our 2 hour and 15 minute drive to Milford Sound, we went through Homer Tunnel which is the only road access point for Milford Sound. It is a one-way tunnel controlled by traffic lights. We took a boat from the Milford Sound boat terminal to Sand Fly Point which is the ending point for the Milford Sound Track. We hiked for 11 km round trip to Giant Gate Falls. It follows the Arthur River to Lake Ada. Most of the walk is within the rainforest, making it cool and shady. There were also lots of rocks to climb over in places. We had bag lunches upon our return before getting on the boat cruise at 1:30 p.m.Written September 18, 2024
- leoncY2952AP0 contributionsGreat Tour Guide to Create Life Long MemoriesJust completed our trip with G! This has got to be one of the most amazing tour guided trips we’ve ever taken. My wife and I took our two-year-old with us and G was very accommodating. Trips and tramps provided a car seat on the shuttle bus. Now to the actual adventure! G was filled with a wealth of information about almost every attraction en route to Milford Sound. You get a deeper appreciation of what you’re actually driving through. If we have driven this on our own, we are certain we would’ve missed out on the amazing fun facts that we were passing by. Because of that, I strongly recommend taking this tour because of the value you will get from riding with G. He’s not only funny, but he’s a very nice guy!Written September 16, 2024
- Dudegetabike0 contributionsMust do trip for Milford sound, small groups for a more personal trip.Jeff was a great tour guide. Lots of fun info as a few premium dad jokes thrown in the mix. He pulled over plenty of times for us to stretch our legs and take in the scenery. The provided lunch was tasty. The hike was a little shorter than I had hoped for but still was nice to have several smaller walks throughout. The boat ride was great, they booked us on a medium sized boat which seemed to be a little less cram packed so we had space to sit comfortably. We got up close to some penguins as well as sea lions! Stunning views the whole way. Loved this trip and would do it again.Written August 21, 2024
- giuliamZ1762MX0 contributionsEnjoyed milford soundWe enjoyed the fact we were in a small group. We took a lot of picture thanks to Steve (the guide) that stopped in every beautiful lookout. The lunch was very good. The cruise was amazing, we encountered allo two penguings and a lot of seals!Written August 13, 2024
- 162avivaj0 contributionsFantastic, well organized and fun trip to Milford Sound!I loved my experience with trips and tramps! I did the day trip to Milford sound. I’m so happy to leave the driving up to someone else, and just sit back and enjoy all the views and commentary. The boat company they work with, and the lunches were both great. The guide Jeff was excellent! He provided interesting information along the day and plenty of dad jokes. The small group experience certainly made the trip better. They are clearly dedicated to giving people the best experience possible when visiting town. Next time I come, I will be booking hiking trips with them. I cannot recommend traveling with this group enough!! I chose this group as it came recommended from my Airbnb host, and I’m so glad I listened to her recommendation.Written July 24, 2024
- Hogget150 contributionsAmazing tour. Absolutely stunning scenery, great local knowledge adds hugely to the experience. This is an outstanding tour. Our guide, Jeff provided interesting commentary throughout the bus drive to and from Milford and the lunch provided (2 x chicken and salad wraps, bakery slices and an apple) was enjoyable and filling. Jeff was able to tweak the stop son the tour to fit in with the ferry departure and the needs of the group (14 people max). I strongly recommend taking the tour from Te Anau rather than driving to Milford yourself as not only does it give you a rest and chance to take in the stunning scenery but Jeff's local knowledge adds a huge amount to the experience as he was able to stop at and provide additional information on the various areas/terrain we could see from the various lookouts. The Milford cruise itself was stunning. We had a beautiful blue sky day and cruising down the sound and seeing Mitre Peak, waterfalls and getting commentary on the sights from the captain was thoroughly enjoyable. I can't recommend this tour enough!Written July 17, 2024
- AustinFus0 contributionsGreat guide - stunning sceneryJeff was very friendly, easy-going and knowledgeable. The cruise around Milford Sound was stunning. However, the journey to and from Te Anau was just as memorable and a wonderful thing to do.Written July 3, 2024

- O8990DDpaulc0 contributionsAwesome tour to an amazing place with a wonderful guide. We did the Milford Sound Coach, Cruise and Walk tour with Trips and Tramps. Our guide Jeff (pronounced Jiff in NZ - so that’s how I’ll write it from now on) told us to make sure we include any negative feedback in any review we might leave, as that is how the company improves - by acting upon feedback and then striving to improve clients’ experiences - right down to what they might provide guests for lunch. How good is that - how honest! So here is the negative feedback… Now onto the positive feedback. This trip, with this tour company, with this tour guide is something you don’t want to miss out on. The comfortable, warm, modern bus that took us to Milford Sound arrived on time with a happy and friendly guide (Jiff) greeting us and immediately making us feel at ease. The group was small, enabling us to get to know each other and allowing Jiff to relate to each of us more intimately, answering questions as required, telling endless stories about the history, the geology, the ecology, the natural environment and it’s flora and fauna, whilst constantly delivering one ‘Dad’ joke after another. The journey to Milford Sound was awesome. We were ahead of the big tours and so our stops for sightseeing weren’t overwhelmed by huge crowds. And Jiff knew exactly the best times and places to stop and look at particular sites, tailoring stops dependent upon weather and predicted crowds. Having grown up in the region, his knowledge of the area is limitless. He must deliver the same stories everyday to every different tour group and yet he managed to make us feel that we were the most important group he’d ever had. That is the mark of someone who truly loves his work. Arriving at the terminal at exactly the right time, not a minute early or late, we boarded free of any crowds and enjoyed the spectacular Milford Sound on a smaller vessel, with our very own dolphin accompanying us on our entire journey. Milford Sound is every bit as spectacular as you have been told. It is breathtaking. The vessel was clean and comfortable with free tea and coffee. We met up with Jiff again after the cruise and he offered us the chance to fly up to the glacier adjacent to Milford Sound. He seemed to know everyone there, including the helicopter pilot who dutifully flew us up to stand on top of the world (or so it seemed). It was an amazing experience (but at an additional charge of course - well worth it!) that was an exhilarating add-on. Thank you Jiff for organising that for us. The trip back to Te Anau was every bit as informative and entertaining as the trip to Milford Sound. There are so many places to stop and look at incredibly spectacular scenery and Jiff knows them all. In summary - if you’re visiting New Zealand and you don’t do this tour with this tour company and hopefully with this guide (Jiff), you are seriously missing out. Just do it. 10 out of 10 Trips and Tramps. My only criticism is that Trip Advisor only allows 5 stars. I’d give more if I could.Written May 22, 2024
- Discover036528072680 contributionsAll about Fiordland in a dayJeff was a fantastic guide. He showed us what the Fiordland looks like in a day; had stops in many fascinating places and educating us about from native birds Kia, Blue duck to the history of first settlers.Written May 7, 2024
- est3110 contributionsNature enthusiasts, this is for you! What an amazing tour! Our guide was so knowledgeable and kind. The food was spectacular and very filling. We got to see lots of beautiful hidden spots, dolphins, seals, a wild male kea, and waterfalls! Don’t waste your time looking at any other tours, this is THE tour to book!Written May 5, 2024

Honestly it was disappointing. The whole experience was pretty boring and miserable. The heavy rainfall and freezing temperature aside, there's just not much to see and experience in the rainforest. Just ferns and moss and extremely annoying sandflies that won't leave your face. No wildlife. The guide was just walking ahead of us the whole time and only stopped to introduce maybe 4 kinds of fern. That's about it. There's just one stoned path. Not sure what's the point of the guide. The hike was not challenging either. The booking said 11km but we hiked about 6km in total. If you want to go for a walk in the rainforest not expecting to see anything at all and if you don't mind getting constantly harassed by these tiny flies that somehow flies fine in heavy rain, then go for it. For me the experience is not worth the money and time.

Sorry you didn't enjoy the experience. Tramping in NZ can be like that on occasions, wet and with unusual challenges. We still reckon it's pretty special on the Milford Track with the ferns and moss and worth going with a great attitude to make the most of it all.

We thoroughly enjoyed the half day walk along part of the Milford Track. Kate, our guide, enthusiastically led the way, pointing out interesting aspects as we went along. She carried tea and coffee supplies which we all enjoyed at the half way point. We were a group of six and Kate made us all very welcome. She had a great knowledge of the Fiordland area, its history, fauna and flora and she shared some of this as we strolled along. The transfer by water taxi to and from the start point was seamless and added to the experience. We’re a relatively fit couple in our 70s and had no trouble with the track as it’s relatively flat and in excellent condition. We’d highly recommend this walk.

We were picked up at the exact time of our pick-up time. Anna, our guide, was an amazing tour guide as well as a great story teller and would make every conversation interesting. So from the history of Milford Sound to small bits of information about ferns, birds, water of Milford, etc. were all in our heads at the end of the day. She knew the exact timing and place of breaks, so we could take some breath and keep going. If you haven't walked thru Milford sound, you haven't been here. This is such a beautiful place full of life and color. We just loved it and I could say this was the best decision we've made during this trip. 200% recommend it!!

Highlight was the water taxi ride from Milford Sound to Sandfly Point that only took 5-7 mins. The cruise was as expected with stunning views of the Sounds. The tracks are mainly flat and easy, no need for hiking poles. The end of the hike was at Giant Gates Falls. We returned on the same tracks we came from back to Sandfly Point to catch the water taxi again and took us back to Milford Sound visitor centre. I took this splendid guided tour courtesy of @tripsandtramps. Trips and Tramps are tour operators based in Te Anau and have an amazing fleet of local guides who are rich in local knowledge and history of Fiordland and surrounding areas. I highly recommend these guys.

Walked part of the Milford Track with our guide PC whilst on our recent trip to New Zealand. The walking was excellent and PC was a superb guide giving us lots of information about the local Forna and flora without overburdening us with facts. That made the trip extremely enjoyable and would thoroughly recommend it.

2nd of Three day hiking package. Half day walk on the Milford track followed by a cruise on Milford Sound. Once again Geoff guided us with humor and knowledge of all things New Zealand. A great day had by all. The easiest walk which helped stretch slightly sore muscles from the Kepler experience. The views are beautiful, the track pleasant and insect repellant kept the sand flies away. Cruise on the sound is amazing.

We had a tree down on the road on our way to Milford sound so did not get to do the hike. There is no cell service between Te Anau and Milford sounds so we couldn’t contact them for two days. When we got back to town I had an email saying they heard about the tree issue and that we would be getting a refund, no questions asked.
Really appreciate it! Thanks!

Glad we were easy to deal with, even if we didn't get to host you. Fiordland is a wild and unpredictable place so sometimes you just have to roll with it all! Maybe we can take you for a walk another time.

Hi, thanks so much for your review. We aim to give excellent service and our guides are a big part of that. We are all hikers and travellers ourselves so we know what it's like to be on holiday and to also find yourself on a tour that is a little challenging or outside your comfort zone - we have great empathy for that!
Safe travels.

Hullo. If we were driving into Milford Sound for the day apart from 2 hr cruise how long is the guided tour and what time do they depart?

I would like to know if we can do this tour and then get 'Milford sound sightseeing cruise' which departs from Milford NZ counter latest one at 2.45.
Do we see something different on cruise or it is the same as our hiking one.

I would think so. It was over at about 12pm.
