Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Karen L0 contributionsFantastic tour to see Blue PenguinsThis tour was booked by our agent….knowing I love seeing birds. It was very well done and Danni our guide took us along the Otago Peninsula to see various wildlife. Sea lions, shell ducks were just a couple. At the Albatross and Blue Penguin centre, we were given a talk about the penguin and then went out to a platform to wait for them to arrive……which they did, right on cue! As soon as it was dark, groups of about 8 appeared and made their way up the beach to their burrows. Great views and lots of photo opportunities. Wrap up warm and there is a coffee truck there that sells not only coffee but also soup and hot chocolate.Written February 10, 2025
- H3679YTtimothyb0 contributionsExcellent Otago Peninsula and Blue Penguin mini-tourWe took the excellent tour starting at our hotel in Dunedin with the wonderful Dani, and I recommend this very highly because: - You don' have to drive yourself or Uber out to the end of the Otago Peninsula and the tour takes you back around 11:15PM; - There's a ton of really good sites and stops (such as to see see lions along the way) during the drive out; - Dani gives deep explanations of everything from the geology of the peninsula and Dunedin area in general, to understanding the shallow bay that forms the peninsula, to specifics on the birds we pass, to great photo-op stops; - There are relatively few people spread out along the viewing platform, so it's easy to see the little blue penguins waddle in from the sea just at dusk and start burrrowing into their nests; - It's a really good value, and the money you spend goes towards the conservation and education efforts of the centre.Written February 4, 2025
- Nikola151310 contributionsMust do in Dunedin!Had an amazing time doing this tour! I was surprised how much our tour guide Danni knew about the history, nature and people in here. She was more than happy to answer all of our questions and was also telling us her experiences and recommendations. She picked us up by the Dunedin Tourist centre and drove us straight to Otago Peninsula to do the tour there with us - she showed us some amazing view points, landmarks, Maori spot and also a lot of fauna and flora. Later we joined the other people at the Royal Albatross Centre, we went to the presentation about this region (and of course penguins) held mostly by Sian (who made the presentation really funny and interesting!) and went down to the platform to wait for little blue penguins to arrive. Meanwhile we received some funny facts from both girls and from Lyndon, who also started to point out on the sky and was showing us planets and telling us more about the stars we can see. When we started to be cold, there was a coffee cart, where Alistair was ready to serve us anything to keep us warm. We saw many penguins arriving to the beach and also few albatrosses flying over the beach! All of us got a great time and once we finished, Danni took us back to Dunedin and was asking each of us about our drop off places to make it the most comfortable experience for us.Written January 23, 2025
- 3JulieC0 contributionsA wonderful tripWe did this tour on a lovely evening in January. From start to finish it was really well done. Our guide, James, collected us from our hotel and after collecting a few others (max 11) started our journey to the Otago peninsular. We had a stop to admire the wonderful view from high up and then continued with james stopping periodically to point out wildlife. This included a couple of sea lions and lots of different bird species. We then made our way to the bay where the penguins nest and James pointed out an albatross flying overhead. Fantastic sight. But the best was yet to come as just as it became dark the tiny blue penguins emerged from the sea in small groups and waddled past us. It was an amazing sight. This tour was worth every penny and I would definitely recommend. A big thank you to James and his colleagues who really made the experience and we came away totally in love with the tiny creatures.Written January 22, 2025
- leoniec8970 contributionsMust do tour! Don’t miss out!The tour guide was amazing! Great knowledge base and creative entertaining story telling. She was very passionate about her conservation work which was very inspiring and uplifting. Loved seeing the penguins come up on the beach! Amazing experience! Great to see penguins in their natural habitat and not enclosed within a zoo setting. Highlight of our trip to DunedinWritten January 18, 2025
- H5152PVrobertd0 contributionsFabulous tour! The "Otago Peninsula In-Depth Tour and Blue Penguins Pukekura Experience" was a five hour evening tour to see the Blue Penguins return to their nest from a day of feeding at sea. The Blue Penguins are the world's smallest penguin, only about 30 cm./1 foot tall. We drove along the Otago Peninsula and made several stops along the way. There was a sea lion near the road, but it moved too fast for me to get a photo of it. When we arrived at the Blue Penguin reserve, we had a chance to see albatrosses in flight and the native red-billed gulls. After a talk about the Blue Penguins, we went down to a platform to watch them. It was great to see these tiny Blue Penguins returning to their nests. We saw 124 penguins that night. (The ranger counted for us.) I highly recommend this tour.Written January 17, 2025
- Kateykate120 contributionsAmazing experience for penguins and other birdsThis trip was brilliant. We were picked up in Dunedin and went on a tour of the Otago Peninsula to look at the local birdlife, particularly the wading/water birds. The guide was knowledgeable and gave us interesting information about the birds that we were seeing. On arrival at Pukekura we saw albatross flying as well as the many seagulls. Then we had the penguin experience, started with a short talk about the penguins and the history of New Zealand which was really interesting, followed by the viewing at dusk of the groups of penguins coming in from the beach and up past the platform that we were viewing from. There were plenty of penguins and plenty of opportunity to see them both on the beach and in the dunes as they made their way back to their nests. They allowed us to take photographs provided the flash was switched off so have some fantastic photographic memories of the experience. I would highly recommend this tour.Written December 23, 2024
- J5116ZDlouiseb0 contributionsAn absolute MUST DO in New Zealand!Just when I thought New Zealand had shared all its treasures, I spent the evening with the most wonderful little creatures I have ever seen and it was the most special evening of my holiday 🥰 After an informative drive to the peninsula from Dunedin with our lovely guide, James, we had an excellent talk by another one of the trustees, about the history of the region and fascinating facts about these unique creatures. Then down to the beach for a special evening of watching them scurrying up the beach in small groups (for protection), scrambling across the rocks to their burrows, with lots of chirping, which was adorable. This tour is run by the charitable trust that is working to protect these special penguins, so by taking their tour, you are directly contributing to their vital work. I can’t recommend this tour highly enough. If you are even just thinking about visiting the South Island, Dunedin or even New Zealand, seeing these wonderful creatures is reason enough on it’s own!Written December 19, 2024
- katyb8450 contributionsThe cute Blue Penguins.James was so knowledgeable about the history of the peninsular and stopped to point out birds and views The trip was well organised and fun. Just a fantastic evening with James and Danni. Thank you.Written December 15, 2024
- writeon8250 contributionsA Not-to-Miss WIldlife Experience in DunedinI can't say enough good things about this experience. I booked it the day-of and despite inclement weather, the experience was tremendous. First, our guide, Dani, was enthusiastic and energetic and super knowledgeable too. She had a story for everything and was also able to answer nearly any question thrown at her. While the draw here is the penguins, not having transportation and needing a ride to the reserve ended up being a bonus because there's so much to see on the peninsula along the way — and I'm not sure I would've wanted to drive those windy roads myself and may not have made much of a tour of it. The rolling hills are beautiful and there's so many bird species up there. Dani navigated the roads with ease, stopping several times along the way for photos and to spot wildlife or talk about the history of the land and culture. Once we arrived at the center, she helped us spot some fur seals and made sure to give us time in the gift shop — one of the best collections of artfully made NZ-made items I've seen so far! The guide leading the 30-minute discussion before the viewing was also very captivating. Then there was the viewing experience itself. Even with a slight drizzle and cooler temps for a December evening, it was such a thrilling experience. I understand and appreciate why they cap the number of people, so you'll have ample opportunity to view the penguins on the platform both arriving on the beach and then waddling up into the dunes towards their burrows. The guides explain everything from their sounds to their habits and rituals. This is a not-to-be-missed experience while in Dunedin! I'm so glad I went.Written December 14, 2024

Before seeing the penguins, you can go on a small guided tour to various areas to observe and hear explanations about various birds and animals. I visited this site as part of a group of four in November 2024.
The visit started with a little time before the talk/lecture in the visitor centre. I could have done with a little more time for that, but that was my own fault as I hadn’t arrived early enough in advance of the booked time slot. I’d advise allowing at least 20 minutes of more for browsing in the shop or centre before the booked time.
The talk in advance of the site visit was delivered by the two guides for the evening, Leon and Lindon. The talk dealt with the history of the site, (both in terms of the history of the site in National terms going back to the 19th century as well as as the history since the establishment of the penguin conservation centre), the behaviour of the blue penguins, and Health and Safety matters to be observed during the site visit. The talk/lecture was delivered in a very interesting and entertaining manner by Leon and Lindon as a well greased and accomplished double act.
The double act was maintained to a high standard during the site visit, with further information being provided while we were on site waiting for and viewing the penguins.
The biscuits provided while we were on the viewing platform went down very well with all so far as I could see.
The arrival of the first group of penguins was spotted and described (just) before they actually started coming out of the water, as were arrivals of the subsequent groups similarly.
The viewing platform was positioned very close, or even on the route used by the penguins travelling from the water to their nests inland of the sandy shore. Many of them travelled along a path right by the side of the platform, and some went under it on the shore side and out on the landward side. Many of the penguins’ nest entrances were visible from the platform.
The arrival or return from the sea of the penguins occurs at a partialur time relative to sunset or dusk, and so is reasonably predictable.
The number of penguins returning each evening also varies depending on nesting activity, the egg minding to be done, and the stage the young chicks are at in terms of needing to be fed and fledged (if that’s an appropriate term for penguins).
While they start to arrive on the shore around dusk, and the light is good enough to see them at this stage, it does get darker quickly. The area around the platform is lit artificially and this allows good viewing of the penguins. The penguins seem not to be bothered by the artificial lighting nor by the people present on the platform.
The impact of the lighting and viewing by people has apparently been studied by comparison with other sites where there is no such lighting or viewing and it seems that there is no adverse effect on the penguins from the lighting or people.
I felt it was a real privilege to be able to view these animals in their (almost) natural habitat and to learn about them from our guides on the night Leon and Lindon.
I highly recommend a visit to this centre, and I would suggest allowing at least 20 minutes or more if possible for browsing in the gift shop and visitor centre before the talk & lecture.

This was an amazing evening. We saw about 130 penguins. They're soo cute waddling up the beach. The guides were super knowledgeable and great at interacting with my kids and taking time to answer their questions. It's a very special experience being soo close to the penguins in a way that's safe for them too, we could move around the platform and have different views of the penguins. Being able to video and take photos was amazing too. A penguin came within arms reach of us even by the coffee cart.
I booked through trip advisor thinking this was cheaper than Oamaru and only saw that it was in USD not NZD after the payment went through which was a fright, though I'm actually glad this happened as the other doesn't allow photos and after going there during the day I feel Pukekura is a premium experience, much closer and you can move around rather than being seated in a stand with soo many others. This was well worth the extra cost for what will be lifetime memories for my whanau.

I was phoned just prior to the tour that I will be the only person participating in the tour. I was a little nervous as I thought that the lack of bigger audience would make things awkward. But fortunately that was not the case as my tour guides were very hospitable and kept the momentum of the tour going.
And the moment I waited for: the penguins. Seeing them come ashore and waddle their way back home was the most enjoyable thing to see. So cute! We were able to see up to 50 penguins which was more than what I had expected. I can't recommend the tour enough. Lyndon was a very hospitable tour guide along with his colleague (sorry I forgot your name :/ ) The tour went on for an additional 22 minutes as the moon was making the penguins nervous so make sure to bring some snacks and warm layers, but despite this, I didn't really mind staying on for a little longer.
This tour funds the guardianship of the penguins and their habitat, so I would recommend going on this tour to help support the good work the team at Blue Penguins Pukekura are doing, also cute penguins!

So much fun!! This makes for a late evening, but we all had do much fun. The guides were very knowledgable, sharing some interesting history inside while we waited for the penguins to get close. They then moved us down to the platform near the penguin beach. We ended up needing to wait for longer than usual because there was a sea lion (I think it was) on the beach, but when they came, they came in the cutest, tiny blue and white rafts (groups). They pop out of the water together and brave the Long Beach as they waddle up to their homes, making the most amazing noises. We must have seen over 100 penguins. We even encountered some on the way up to our car. We would absolutely do it again. This is best for kids 5+ and able-bodied adults as the walk down the to beach is a little challenging.

Thank you. Yes general rule is seal lions prefer sandy spots, fur seals prefer rocky coastlines so it probably was a sea lion !

Have visited a few different penguin conservations but this was an especially good way to see the little blue penguins.
I particularly liked the fact that you are at a nice distance and can’t interfere with their natural actions but can view them from a safe distance.
Be prepared to sit for a while in the cold sea air during the evening - dress warmly and it might be worth having a blanket for your legs - it can be chilly.
Also, please be prepared to be quiet!! The penguins can be spooked by loud noises and will retreat. Noise, like the chatter and squeals of over excited visitors who can’t follow simple instructions (always a few numpties about).
Despite a few loud buffoons, this was a lovely excursion. Decent facilities for less able bodied. Really knowledgeable staff who clearly care about the penguins and are passionate about their wellbeing and conservation.
Overall it was a brilliant way to spend an evening and well worth a visit. Highly recommended.

This tour is absolutely worth it! You start inside with a great engaging and informative presentation on the penguins and the local area and history. Then you go outside and see the cute little penguins waddling in! You get a great view of them and can really appreciate them up close. Would recommend this to anyone staying at evening in Dunedin! Our guide Dani was especially awesome!

We enjoyed the evening tour very much. We saw a lot of cute blue penguins on the viewing platform and took loads of nice photos and videos. The tour started at 845pm with an excellent introductory talk and then we went down to the platform at the beach to see the little blue penguins. We also bought a blue penguin soft toy at NZD25 to bring it home as a happy memory. If you are in Dunedin, highly recommend you to join this evening tour for an unforgettable experience!

I had the most fantastic time on this tour! Lyndon is so funny and entertaining, you get lots of information about local fauna and flora, penguin behavior and a bit of history before you're walking down a few steps to see them coming in. It was really entertaining, the sun set magically in front of us and as soon as it got dark the little fellas started to walk in. Lyndon let us know about the sounds they make, so we could actually hear them way before they waddled their way up. When they come up, they all (>50 with us) waddle along the same way, which is really close to the viewing platform, so you will have the best view and also can take great pictures and videos! What a memory! Highly recommended, I'd do it again!

We were very happy with this tour. The lesson beforehand was informative and did not drag on. It shared just the right amount of important information about the penguins and also shared the history of the Māori people. The presenter was excellent. The actual viewing of the penguins was better than I anticipated. We were closer (as close as 1 meter) and saw more than I expected. The group took turns switching places so everyone had ample opportunities to get great photos. Give yourself time to drive out to the meeting area. The road is slow with many twists and turns. It cools down a lot after dark so bring warm clothing. This was well worth the cost and time.

We came to the Royal Albatross Center not long after the winter solstice this month. The viewing time is much earlier, around 4 to 7 pm in winter. It is really suitable for my toddler and preschool kid. It is out of our expectation, as totally there were nearly 40 penguins showing up from the sea, and walking in front of us. We felt so amazed to see the penguins in the wild, and witnessed their trip back to nests. Our only viewing experience with penguins were from Auckland Zoo. It was so exciting to view them in the real nature environment. The weather was awesome on that day. We can roughly see the milky way, as well as a moving light spot, International Space Station. Besides the viewing tour, we were able to learn the local geography and history related to the tour, observe the plants, and learn about the volunteering projects about the ecological protection. Thanks you Lyndon and Leon for your guided tour. What a wonderful evening!
