About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- patrickkoellner0 contributionsGreat insights into city's heritage architecture and contemporary dynamicsI did the two-hour tour - which is the longest and most comprehensive one available - with tour guide Athol in late February 2020. Athol is a fantastic guide who knows the city inside out. The tour covered both the historic part in the city centre and they newly developed wharehouse district a bit - but not much - further. I certainly learned a lot about Dunedin's city evolving city landscape. Dunedin has arguably the most character among cities in NZ and exploring its past and present is extremely worthwhile. Athol's tour is a great starting point for doing so. It can also be recommended for people having lived in the city for a while.Written February 26, 2020
- Diovt0 contributionsVogel Street WalkWe toured Vogel Street with Athol. He gave us personalized attention on this one hour tour of the old warehouse precinct of Dunedin which is experiencing a renaissance. It was an extremely interesting tour that we highly recommend if you are interested in an urban experience off the beaten track and away from the hordes of tourists. Athol was well informed.Written January 24, 2020
- 16quit0 contributionsHistorical view of DunedinNice walk to view Dunedin city center and learn of the history of the area. Very knowleadgeable guide named Athol.Written November 24, 2019
- drkiki20150 contributionsReally interesting! On a Saturday afternoon, I was the only tour member with Athol as my guide. This was perfect because I was not unfamiliar with Dunedin, having spent 8 weeks in 2004, but there was much I'd forgotten or never knew. It was great to get reoriented after 15 years and hear about and see some landmarks I did not know. Athol also pointed out some important architectural features of various buildings and blocks that I never would have noticed, making this tour very enjoyable and a learning experience. I can highly recommend Athol as someone who knows Dunedin but also engages with tour members.Written November 15, 2019
- Bronagh D0 contributionsA hugely informative and engaging tour!Athol was a real pleasure to meet! He is a fount of knowledge about all things Dunedin! We spent a very insightful and interesting 2 hours learning about Dunedin's history, present and future from someone very passionate about his hometown. He is knowledgeable and engaging and very thoughtful in his approach. He gave us great recommendations for the city and beyond also. Highly recommended.Written August 8, 2019
- Wanderdee0 contributionsFascinating and funMum and I were keen on the Vogel Street Walk to delve further into one of our ancestors - Athol was very generous in taking a genuine interest in our story, and taking us off track slightly to point out the general location where our ancestor would have worked. The tour is a really interesting journey around the warehouse district buildings and areas that have been, and continue to be, done up and re-purposed with a huge range of businesses. Athol has lots of great stories, anecdotes and photos to share about the trades and organisations that previously occupied the buildings, and what's happening there now. It's a cool part of the city with a few facts, quirks and details that you'd otherwise miss. Athol is a lovely warm, friendly host and we highly recommend doing a tour with him. I'm looking forward to doing the Old Town Walk on my next visit.Written May 31, 2019
- peter16380 contributionsDay 13 New ZealandBooked this tour but were horrified by the price, after paying $20 in Christchurch we weren’t to impressed with the $35 cost. However we weren’t told that this included donations to churches and coffee. Athol was great, were informed with the history and proposals to the future of Dunedin and gave us an entertaining tour, don’t miss.Written April 4, 2019
- Jennifer F0 contributionsAn excellent walking tourAthol was knowledgeable guide, telling us about the past, present and future plans for Dunedin. The tour took a little over 2 hours and included coffee along the way. Reasonable priced and a great way to get the layout of the town.Written April 2, 2019
- Seonaid H0 contributionsReally excellent, informative tour of DunedinWe thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour, complete with coffee break, around Dunedin. Athol met us all at the iSite, introduced us all and then took us on a fascinating historical and architectural tour of the centre of the city. We didn't cover a huge area, other tours probably cover a greater number of sites, but I very much doubt whether they have Athol's knowledge and passion for his subject. The walk was illustrated with a large selection of old photographs which allowed us to see what many of the sites looked like originally and also how many of these historic buildings have been rescued, fairly recently, from decay and abandonment. It was great to see that Dunedin does seem to have a real interest in maintaining its character and historic buildings as well as a drive to improve its waterfront which Athol also discussed with us. Despite the hills in Dunedin, the pace at which we walked and the route taken mean that this walk is suitable for just about everyone. I would thoroughly recommend it.Written March 27, 2019
- pete00810 contributionsExcellent walking tour of Dunedin. We met Athol, our group guide, at the tourism information centre. We had an engaging group of about ten persons. Athol took us on a very informative, interesting and easy two hour walking tour of the beautiful city. This included a stop for a coffee towards the end. Highly recommended.Written March 6, 2019
- AussieTravelholic0 contributionsGreat Introduction to DunedinI booked Athol's morning tour online prior to leaving home. It was reasonably priced and includes a coffee/hot drink midway through. Our cruise ship shuttle dropped us off in the centre of town with plenty of time to spare before the tour. We met Athol at the I-Site centre and a group of 6 of us went walking for approx. 2 hours. The weather was perfect. While Dunedin is pretty hilly we managed to avoid the big hills and it was well paced and not strenuous. Athol is very informative and engaging and goes into detail about the history of the area, shows us historically and architecturally significant buildings, takes us past modern artworks on buildings and then stops at a lovely renovated coffee shop for a coffee and a toilet break. The tour finishes at the beautiful Dunedin Railway Station. This is a great way to see a town when you have limited time. Athol was a great guide and I can recommend this tour.Written February 26, 2019
- 86calgary0 contributions10:30 AM walking tourEven though Dunedin is a very hilly city, this walking tour was not the least bit strenuous. Nice, easy pace with lots to see along the route. Athol met us at the i-site in the Octagon and led us on a very enjoyable 2 hour walk. Great city past, present and future in the making. A walking tour with a local is the best introduction to a city and Athol certainly came through.Written February 19, 2019
- SparklySally0 contributionsAbsolutely brilliant insight into a part of Dunedin you'd probably not normally discover by yourself.SOOOOOO delighted we did this walk with Athol Parks while we were in Dunedin. This awesome 1-hour (ish) walk took us through the amazing 'warehouse precinct' that's unfolding in Dunedin's Vogel Street area. Athol was a PHENOMENAL guide. Fabulous combination of deep, deep knowledge of the area and passion for the future of what's unfolding. BRILLIANT. And so personable. An absolute delight. If you want to see a side of Dunedin that you wouldn't probably discover by yourself, and hear some of the amazing history behind the developments, check this walk out. It really IS well worth the $30. And as a bonus, we got to see some AMAZING street art, too!Written January 23, 2019
- Rabbitfinlay10 contributionsCitywalk DunedinThis is a fantastic guided walk. Athol is knowledgable, engaging and entertaining. I can't recommend this enough. More than worth the fee.Written January 14, 2019
- ED44SF0 contributionsAn excellent introduction to Dunedin.I went on Athol Parks' walking tour of the city last month, and it was an excellent introduction to Dunedin. Athol explained Dunedin's Scottish heritage and influence in great detail, and he also pointed out a few architectural gems as well. I also asked Athol a number of questions regarding Dunedin and the surrounding area, and I was very impressed with his knowledge and insight. Athol and I also talked a bit about the bands and music of the Dunedin Sound (the music scene that was popularized by bands from the Dunedin area back in the 1980s). In fact, at one point during our walk, Athol pointed out the frontman of The Clean (one of the influential bands of the Dunedin Sound). For me, it was a great surprise to spot a music legend! During our walk, Athol was much more than just a local guide. For me, he was more like a local friend showing me around his favorite sites of Dunedin. :-) I highly recommend going on a guided walk around Dunedin with Athol, you'll learn so much about Dunedin, and you'll have an absolutely wonderful time!Written November 27, 2018

Our small group loved our unique Laneways guided walk with Athol, in fact it was the highlight of our trip to Dunedin! You could sense Athol’s passion for his city and we enjoyed learning about Dunedin in the most engaging way possible - by chatting to a local. Our guide was very knowledgeable and well prepared with historic photographs, newspaper articles and personal anecdotes to share. Highly recommend a walking tour with Athol on your next visit to Dunedin.

We cannot rate Athol’s Heritage Walk and Vogel Street walk (we did both) highly enough!
Athol is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of this beautiful intact small city and will guide you through some usual buildings and history.
However, what makes his walks unique are that he gets to the beating heart of the place. Much of the walk was spent down secret alleys and visiting inside buildings to see unique features undiscoverable by visitors.
If you love architecture and history you will get so much from Athol’s tour. He is responsive to your questions and interests and gave us other wonderful recommendations which truly made our trip!!
If you’re a local you should definitely do it too! Be a tourist in your own city. I know you will discover secrets you didn’t know. Thanks so much Athol.

We did the Old Town Walk with Athol and it was a great walk and we learnt so much about the history, the buildings and the key events that shaped Dunedin. If you are coming off a cruise ship it's great because the tour start right near where the bus drops you off (in front of the i-Site). We highly recommend this tour.

Thank you so much for this review - and apologies for only discovering it today! Yes, Dunedin is interesting and charming. I've been leading walks here since 2006 primarily because I do love the city and because I enjoy sharing something of its essence with visitors. It's heartening to learn that this work is valued. Thanks again!

We did the City Walk with Andrew in February on the day the Piped Bands came to town which made for a noisy start to what proved to be a most interesting couple of hours - actually two and a half hours as we held up progress with questions which Andrew patiently and thoroughly answered. Having grown up in Dunedin he has an extensive knowledge of the history of the city and of the personalities who have helped develop it. The distance covered was not great but contained a wealth of interesting material. Andrew has an engaging manner which made the experience all the more worthwhile.

Thanks very much for your review, John - and apologies that I've only noticed it today. Yes, pipe bands are an occupational hazard here in Dunedin! They are a great spectacle, though, and a reminder of the Scottish heritage here. Best regards, Athol.

The guide Athol, originally from the area, was very informative and we learned some good historical background to Dunedin. The pace was easy and 2 hours flew by.

Thanks very much for your review. Yes, I grew up in the Catlins - a rural area approximately 90 minutes south of Dunedin. I went to high school and university in Dunedin and have lived in the city for 36 of the last 40 years!

I had the pleasure today to complete the Old Town Walking Tour with
City Walks guide/host Athol. I found him to be knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about Dunedin's history. As I happened to have the good fortune to be the sole participant on this particular tour, Athol tailored the tour to my interests and our discussions ranged from past history to current local social, economic and political events in Dunedin. He was generous in sharing his time and insight. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and Athol's personable engaging presentation. I highly recommend it.

A very belated thank you for this review! Somehow it escaped my attention. January seems a long time ago now, and so much has changed. New Zealand's borders have been closed since March, but we are officially rid of COVID-19 here now and life is almost back to normal. I trust you are well. Athol.

You can't make a city tour any better. Perfect! Extremely informative and communicative! And most importantly: his English is very easy to understand, no slang. Responds to individual wishes. We loved it!
