The whole experience was just fantastic. Our Matrie D Toni was so attentive and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. She also shared lots of stories and her passion for the job and her customers showed and it was felt by the 3 of us in the group. Thsnk you Toni for making us feel so comfortable and welcoming on our Tranz Alpine experience. We were served breakfast and lunch and both were delicious and very tasty. Very happy customers

We caught the Tranz Alpine Express from Christchurch to Greymouth in November 2023. Wonderful trip, very comfortable with good audio on head phones. The dining car was great for cups of tea and scones. The scenery was spectacular, staff very pleasant, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The open car was so much fun and great for photography. Was worth the train fare. We did one way and then picked up cycles and rode from Greymouth to Ross over 4 days.

We took the train from Christchurch to Greymouth and upgraded to Scenic Plus and it was one of the best things we did in our whole six weeks in New Zealand. The service from the moment we rolled out of Christchurch was excellent. The food was delicious. Cannot fault it at all. The commentary provided via headphones during the trip was informative and entertaining. We were sad to leave the train in Greymouth - we wanted to go back and see all the magnificent scenery again!

Took this train from Greymouth back to Christchurch at the end of our tour of South Island. Brilliant journey. Staff pleasant and friendly, train bang on time, seats comfortable and spacious with charging points for phone etc. The buffet car had a good choice of refreshments and the optional commentary via headphones was informative. The views were amazing for the whole journey and we took advantage of the outside viewing car when advised that the most scenic section of the journey was approaching. Would definitely recommend this journey as a relaxing way of enjoying New Zealand's fantastic scenery.

This is a really unique experience with amazing views, spacious seats and a good cafe car. They also offer headphones to tune into an informative audio guide of the area you are passing through. It is a long journey but definitely the best way of reaching the west coast!

My mum wanted to go on this trip for her birthday so i treated us to the scenic plus package and it was worth every cent. I have worked in the hospitality industry for 10 years and the staffs service was top notch. The extra touches of the warm towel, welcome package with the postcard and the illustrated book with points of interest along our journey was well received. Throughout the trip we were well fed with plenty of food and both hot and cold drinks. This trip is something you would only do once so the scenic plus package is well worth the splurge.

Well you can sit back, relax, chill and take lots of photos. The trip is about 5 hrs each way, with an hour stop at Greymouth.
You get head phones and running recorded commentary along the way, with historical information.
Crew are pleasant, food is very reasonably priced.
Spoiler- Greymouth is bit boring-) don't expect too much there. Kill the hour at the pub which makes the return trip better....

We had to take the return trip since we had no stay in Greymouth. To be honest; Greymouth was not really the nicest place to stay overnight, but taking the trip forth and back took a long time and was a bit boring (even with dinner served on the way back). A lot of nice scenery across the ridge, but "the World´s Most Beautiful Train Ride" according to the adverts? Not very likely! To be fair; we traveled during wintertime. The nature will probably be more beautiful during spring or summer.

Well worth doing and staying over with a trip back the next day.
The train is comfortable with big windows and comfortable seating.
The departure terminal is modern and a bit out from central Christchurch with small parking area.
Food and beverages available on board or byo food. Great scenery along the journey that you don’t see on the roads. Travel through farms with open vistas of rivers and steams and of course mountains. So quintessential New Zealand and not to be missed.

Nice excursion with lovely hikes. This was a great way to explore the terrain, see beautiful waterfalls and learn more about the area. Our driver, AJ, was most helpful and went above and beyond to help us.
