About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- InspectorJS0 contributionsRip OffComplete rip off. Saw very little of interest. No Kiwi as promised. Some eels, ducks, sheep and not much else. $80 for 2 adults. Go to Orana Park instead. You will have a far better time.Written January 20, 2025
- Sandy52590 contributionsA thoroughly enjoyable and wonderful several hours of observing and interacting withhanimals and learning more about theWe spent several hours walking on the wooden and dirt paths slowly throughout the park. What a delight it was! There are birds everywhere. And not just sparrows. There are attractive and easy to read signs all over the place detailing the unique animal species that are located at Willowbank. There are pond areas and water areas everywhere. It was a delight to see the children feeding the eels as soon as you walk into the park after paying admission. We caught the latter part of the magic show and loved it. There is a small little-used lunch area with picnic tables behind the magic show, and adjoining the toilets. A great place for families. Easy to walk. Children love the smaller and larger animals, Especially the birds that are often roaming freely. You can purchase a bag of small food to feed the birds and also a different bag of larger food pellets to feed the larger animals such as the deer. Make sure to purchase these small white bags when you buy your admission as they are not available elsewhere in the park. And, yes, we were able to spot two kiwis in the darkened kiwi shelter. It was magical. Thank you, Willowbank, for a delightful day. Please give me a link if you find this review helpful. You can also look for reviews that I have written for Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington as well as Brisbane.Written January 15, 2024
- AhuvaBC0 contributionsHands on and informativeThey have three exhibit areas. International, farm, and native New Zealand. I always enjoy the monkies. There are loads of birds in all the areas. The native birds are interesting. Many have that rounded or thicker body like the kiwi. There are live kiwis, but it’s so dark in the exhibit, good luck finding one. We did, but it was really a lump in the darkness. Lol. Very much worth the price of admission, and they have an excellent gift shop.Written January 10, 2024
- LuckyMargaret0 contributionsDefinitely one of the best wildlife reserve parks that we’ve been to. Highly recommended!A beautiful wildlife reserve, we can see a lot of NZ native animals as well as farm animals. Guests can buy animal food - to feed eels (something unusual that we experienced!), farm animals or birds. They have lovely picnic area as well should you wish to bring own lunch.Written January 3, 2024
- 2units0 contributionsAlways amazingThis place never disappoints, each time we go there is something new. This is the best time to visit as there are lots of baby animals - it’s not just for children who of course love it and get to feed the various creatures but also a truly magical place for their parents & other adults. This time we were lucky to see baby capybara, piglets, baby gibbon & capuchin monkeys as well as plenty of ducklings (some of which even follow you along the pathways) Another special moment was actually seeing two kiwi in their dark enclosure - on previous occasions we have only heard them. The hard work & dedication of the people lucky enough to work here is supported by every paying visitor; helping them in the conservation of rare & endangered species. It’s just great fun 🤩Written November 5, 2023
- 1010petite-c0 contributionsA good entertainment for parents with childrenA good experience to animals lovers and children. Although not big but well managed and the claimed animals, birds are healthy and can be found. Ducks, geese and chickens are running everywhere together with the visitors. Never thought eels can be fed and patted, lol. A not bad entertainment for family with kids indeed.Written October 9, 2023
- timbo350670 contributionsHighly RecommendedWillowbank Wildlife Reserve is a great day out for the whole family. Set in a beautiful spot that you can get to on public transport (or your own. The park has a lot to see and do with a great cafe for a meal of coffee. Really enjoyed it here. Highly recommended.Written May 24, 2023
- GillO1900 contributionsGood fun and educationalWent here with two little grandchildren (4 & 18 months) who absolutely adored it. It's worth finding out on entry when the feeding times are. They loved watching the otters and the gibbons being fed and hearing the commentary from the (very knowledgeable) staff. Easy to walk round on proper paths (so easy for a pushchair). You can buy food for different animals at the start which is always a winner with littleys. Good cafe, pretty basic but good children's food and a small variety of sandwiches etc. Plenty of tables inside to eat. We will be going again as it was such a success so that's a recommendation in itself!Written May 8, 2023
- Darlene W0 contributionsUp close wildlife viewingThis was an amazing wildlife encounter especially if you hoping to see the elusive kiwi bird. They have a darkened building exclusively for seeing the kiwi. In addition you can experience feeding eels, or encountering a capybara family. Up close viewing.Written April 30, 2023
- 9LC90 contributionsGo here!Big and so many interesting things to see! Really enjoyed coming here, could spend hours here! Got to see kiwis, pet sheep, see huge eels, many birds…what more could I ask for??Written April 22, 2023
- 843reneec0 contributionsAmazing for young kidsThis was amazing for a toddler. You can feed the birds and the farm animals. They were all so friendly and gentle. My 2 year old loved it. For the adults it was also a nice experience since you are inside the enclosures with most of the birds. We went on a Sunday and it was not to busy. Would definitely recommend!Written February 11, 2023
- oraline0 contributionsWillowbank reserve must see.One of the best wildlife reserves/ Zoos in New Zealand. Can see animals, ie the Ruru (NZ Owl). Able to take clear photo. Interesting to see some rare species of sheep and goats. Feed some animals. Did not think would stay as long as did. Great food in cafe. Bonus magic show.Written December 29, 2022

Found this place totally by accident finding ourselves at a loose end and needing something to do. It’s a short drive from the City and once you are in the grounds it’s easy to navigate your way around. Just follow the boardwalk and there is no need to keep looking at the map provided. The reserve is split into three regions and each has something to offer for everyone. We loved the flow of the place and it was very well laid out. From the first viewing of the eels as you enter to finishing off with the kiwi it was great. The kea were one of our favourites as we got to sit and watch them being cheeky they even tried pecking at my wife’s handbag at one point but were magical to watch flying around. The kiwi house was also fascinating with I think four of them snuffling and scurrying around we could have stayed for hours watching them as at times you were so close to them. Even if you don’t have kids but love a little bush walk and wildlife, this is definitely worth the admission price.

Our family of 4 had a wonderful couple of hours here. We wanted to see a kiwi and we did and it was amazing but we also loved the whole experience. The animals were very active, we loved the layout of the zoo and seeing the emus, otters, monkeys and interesting animals we had not seen. Feeding the eels was a cool different experience too.
The kiwi was the standout. We opened one of the little flaps in the dark area and got lucky and one was right in front of us! We also loved the quiet, dark area for the kiwis and seeing them in their natural habitat. This experience was great value and we loved all the information around and seeing the kiwi egg . We throughly enjoyed it.

This is the most wonderful zoo/wildlife reserve that we have ever been to. What we love most about it is the flow of the park. In major zoos, it’s hard to ensure that you’ve seen every animal due to the layout. However, Willowbank’s planning allows you to follow one path through the entire park, ensuring that you get to see all animals.
We also loved that you could feed the animals. We purchased farm feed from the gift shop and our one year old (and us) had the time of our lives feeding the animals- especially the lamas, alpacas and cows.
The park was well maintained and we would recommend this experience to all families and animal lovers.

Great wildlife park and amazing kiwi experience. Spent over 15 minutes watching a couple of kiwis at work/play and was greatly rewarded by following the advice to stay still and quiet in the kiwi habitat. They were playful little creatures who gradually built up the courage to go about the daily activities with us watching.

It is in the forest and you can see the animals alive in nature.
While looking at the map placed at the entrance, navigate in the viewing order to understand where and which animals are.
I went in as soon as it opened, so I realized that the reason all the animals were coming up to me was because they were waiting for food from other people, which was especially disappointing for ducks all over the aisle. I noticed you were getting food from other customers, but purchased food at the entrance? You might enjoy it if you do. You don't have to feed them, though.
It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get around. It seems to take a lot of time to feed and touch each other.
The corridors, gates and animal enclosures are also delicately crafted to give you a sense of taste, and I am glad I came.

Cute place for kids to see and feed animals. It's mostly a zoo with birds and farm animals from all over the world. Only about 1/3 was native to New Zealand. They did have a few live Kiwis. If you are in ChristChurch and this is your one chance to see native birds, or you want to entertain kids, its worthwhile.

I can see taking younger kids here would be an experience but for the cost seeing ducks, geese, parrots a couple of monkeys and a kiwi in the dark, well it just didn't cut it for us. Can see 80% of these things in the wild. We were in and out in 1 hour.

Absolutely fantastic fun time! We took kids 11, 9 yrs old with the goal of seeing live Kiwis! And we were not disappointed at all. Such a clean, well made wildlife park, perfect for families and kids and best place to see kiwis by far.

We've been before, several times whilst visiting relatives in ChCh.
This time we had the perfect combo. Our grown-up granddaughter, and her two little brothers, aged 5 and 3. As it was late summer, there were ducklings, piglets, chicks, and some fawns, all accessible. I'd forgotten how big, and hungry the eels are, as it was early in the day, they were hungry and came right out of the water..pretty scary.
We spent an hour and a half going round what I'll refer to as the 'zoo', as opposed to the 'farm' and the 'indigenous animals/birds'. Then lunch in the café. Hardly 'haute cusine' but great for children and you can mix and match with stuff you've brought if you like.
After lunch the 'farm' lots of juvenile animals, piglets a plenty, more ducklings, and friendly sheep, goats, and the Brahmins. My personal favourites the cow and calf, beautiful animals, looking in top condition, and well content, you can see where the phrase "cow eyes" refering to that langorous sultry look comes from.
We didn't have enough time to really appreciate the 'indigenous' birds and animals, as we had to be away at 3pm. All in all we spent an entertaining and enlightening 4 hours there.

Willowbank had some great areas and some not so great areas.
Starting with the great:
The native area is really nice. The keas have a huge aviary that visitors can walk through. We saw around 6 kea in there. You can get pretty close to these birds. The indoor kiwi area was also awesome. It's huge and had 4 happy kiwi running around.
You can purchase animal food on the way in for some wild birds, fish and larger animals. Very cool to walk along feeding everything.
The not so great:
The barn area is terrible. The animals are in small pens without grass. They appear crowded. It appears as though the animals live in these pens. Some of the animals are very overweight - they absolutely love being feed by all the visitors. Two cows were in a paddock with grass but everything else was in pens with dirt, concrete or wood underneath.
I personally would not revisit because of this barn area. I would recommend spending a little more and spending a day at Orana Park instead. You cannot get as close to animals. But the animal areas are bigger and better suited for the animal.
