      Fantastic Day, don’t miss out!
What a fantastic day! The train trip is comfortable and you see miles and miles of flat Canterbury Plains before getting into the picturesque mountain passes. The trip absolutely comes alive when your tour guide meets you at Arthur’s Pass Station and takes you to all the places you would’ve missed if you stayed on the train! Stu (our guide) was brilliant. Knowledgeable and entertaining, he really seemed to enjoy the day as much as we did.

Wow what a tour with Ollie!
Ollie was fantastic. High energy, knowledge, and really don’t get stumped by any questions. We were a cohesive group of 6 and had a great time shopping, snacking, viewing, a harbor cruise. When you book your all day tour or any tour book with Ollie

      Tim is the best guide!
Tim was our tour guide and he was bright and charming early in the morning. He gave travel commentary through Christchurch and to Akoroa. We learned Maori words and culture, history of early settlers, geographical points of interest and several good stops for photos. He answered so many questions from everyone and was a gracious, patient host.Lunch was delicious, the tour was fun and informative.

Wonderful experience--safe, stress-free, kind, entertaining, knowledgeable.
My adult sons and I have spent the last two weeks traveling around New Zealand. We decided to take a two-day tour from Christchurch to Queenstown via Mt. Cook and booked our transport with Canterbury Trails. Our guide and driver was Hugo. He picked us up at the Airbnb place we rented in Christchurch and we were dropped off at our hotel in Queenstown. We traveled in a new, very comfortable, clean van. Water bottles at each seat. We stopped at a couple bakeries and cafes along the way (sampled some tasty pies and smoothies) and explored the magnificent natural points of interest. Our trip was safe, stress-free, and fun. Exactly what we needed. Hugo was kind, entertaining, and knowledgeable with both his recommendations -- what to do and where to eat -- and history.  We had the most positive experience we could have imagined! We're thankful🙏🏼😊

      Wonderful views and hikes
I highly recommend the Arthur’s Pass Alpine small group tour. The train ride was comfortable and clean with beautiful views. Our guide Ollie was excellent. He took great care in making sure we were safe and had a wonderful time. He guided us to some beautiful walks and knew the great spots to get memorable photos. He was knowledgeable and friendly and made the trip truly special.

Excellent day out with great guide
Very knowledgeable guide on history and geography of the area. Great views from the Alpine train. Went to several lookout points with the guide and also hiked through alpine beech forest with amazing mosses and lichens. Also hiked through the impressive Castle rocks. Small group of 8 people.

Drove to the bay, swam with the dolphins and enjoyed a local lunch.
What a spectacular drive with great views. Grant, our guide, discussed the history and relayed the damage from the earthquake to us as we travelled. Then we were able to tour the harbor on a boat in search of dolphins- which we found. It was a wonderful experience.

Christchurch Explorer Private Tour with Mandy - A Perfect 4 Hours
We actually had a private Christchurch private tour of Christchurch and the surrounding area. Our guide was Mandy and she was fantastic! She asked what we were interested in and we mentioned street art, cultural places, recovery from the earthquake and aftershocks etc. She showed us many examples of street are during the day - some so stunning - one was a 3D of the storefronts that had been destroyed by the earthquake - so cool. We visited many places in the city including the catherdral, riverside market and so much more. We then drove into the hills above the city and had breathtaking views of Christchurch. Our recommendation is to ask for Mandy if you want to learn about the city and have a very pleasant day.

      Excellent excursion for your day
The driver, Dave was incredibly informative, helpful with recommendations and possesses that New Zealand friendliness. He was prompt, organized and kept us moving (there was so much to see). His recommendations were spot on.

We did two tours with Canterbury Trails over a period of 4 days. Throughout our journey our guide, Dave, was our new best friend. On the first day Dave picked us up at our hotel and took us to Akaroa to do the Akaroa Marine Life Tour. On the way he told us a lot of interesting things about the area and made a brief stop at Barry’s Bay Cheese to watch cheese being made. He also gave us a great restaurant recommendation for dinner in Christchurch that evening.

The next day Dave took us to the train station where we boarded the TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass. It was an amazing 2.5 hour journey with spectacular scenery. At Arthur’s Pass, Dave was waiting for us and drove us to Franz Josef, where we spent two nights. On the way we stopped for a short hike to a beautiful spot in the National Park, then stopped for lunch in the cute seaside town of Hokitika. When we got to Franz Josef, Dave made a point of driving us through the little town to get us oriented and point out some good restaurants.

The next day, Dave took us to the small seaside community of Okarito. We walked the beach and also did a couple of nature walks. Dave was very knowledgeable about the birds and wildlife.

On our final day we were driven from Franz Josef to Queenstown. We left at 8:00 and got to Queenstown at 3:30 with many beautiful stopes along the way.

If you are visiting this part of the world and want personalized experience, I highly recommend Canterbury Trails. What I most appreciated was that Dave listened to our interests and delivered so many wonderful surprises throughout the journey.

We spent 9 days with Stewart, our guide from Canterbury Trails touring much of the South Island. Christchurch, Flying over Mt Cook, Queenstown, Arthur's Pass and more. Stewart loves his country-I know that because he shared his incredible knowledge on customs, geography, ecology, local industry-you name it! Every time he stopped for a meal, lunch or breakfast, the place he chose had excellent food. The BMW he drove was very nice and his driving was always with safety first. We spent many hours in the car in those 9 days getting from one place to another and we never got bored. Canterbury Trails is the best!

We had a great guide (Dave) who allowed us to have a memorable trip under trying times (LOTS of rain). By driving incredibly scenic roads from Queenstown to Franz Josef, he took the stress of driving on the "other" side of the road so we could enjoy the sights. We stopped where we wanted and he made sure the roads ahead were safe. and passable. (About an hour after we arrived, the roads closed!) Even though the power was out in Franz Josef and our excursions were canceled, Dave came up with alternative activities that were truly memorable. (He knows the area really well and has lots of connections:) He didn't even blink an eye when I discovered I'd left my phone at a previous stop halfway up the Arthur Pass. Back we went, picked it up and had plenty of time to finish our journey. I would highly recommend Canterbury Trails (and Dave in particular).

5/5 review because David was fun, knowledgeable, efficient, and accommodating to requests. Especially driving Kate, our daughter, to bungee jump for the first time! It was fantastic! Sights are incredible the whole way… NZ is one of our favorites! Thank you for a fun 2 days!

Canterbury Trails provided us with private tours of Christchurch & local wineries, then dropped us off for the Alpine train, followed us to Arthurs Pass where they picked us up & drove us down the west coast to Queenstown. Tea, our guide, was on time, professional, and thoroughly knowledgeable about all parts of the two tours we took. She went above & beyond -- from helping us find a replacement camera battery to making sure we were able to see Fox Glacier before dark -- all the while sharing a wealth of stories, local history, and particularly moving eye witness account of Christchurch in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake. We were truly sorry to part from her. We HIGHLY recommend Canterbury Trails -- this was one of the best experiences of our two week trip to New Zealand!

During our over three week tour of Australia and New Zealand where we experienced a variety of tours operators in both countries, we found that that Canterbury Trails was the absolute best operator in either country. While a huge part of this extremely positive experience has to do with our specific tour guide, Mandy Mitchell, that the company itself provides small personal touches from beginning to end made the experience a joy.

Unlike other day tour operators we faced throughout our journey, Canterbury Trails pays attention to the details that make a travel experience memorable and positive. For example, when we checked into our hotel, a letter was waiting from the company welcoming us, telling us who our guide was going to be and instructions about appropriate clothing for the tour. Although the time of the tour start was already on our itinerary from our U.S. travel agent, that written Welcome was reassuring as our U.S. agent had gotten several tour times wrong. That Canterbury provided Mandy’s and the owner’s name, and the local contact information the day before the tour was reassuring and considerate.

We first used Canterbury for the Akaroa day cruise in a small group and then the next day our party of three undertook a separate private tour, by train, and then by SUV through Arthurs Pass and then back east down to Queenstown. In both cases Mandy was our tour guide. She was superb, knowledgeable, energetic, friendly, and helpful throughout. As there was some inclement weather during parts of private tour, Mandy made several key suggestions that allowed us see more of the key sights along the way, making much better use of our time than what our travel agent had outlined.

We expected to carry home memories of the South Island’s scenery and history. We didn’t expect that we would also bring back such fond ones of our tour guide.
