This is located very near the Christchurch airport. The general admission includes a ride on the tractors, 4d movies, husky show, penguins awareness, Antarctic wind experience. It was surprisingly a really enjoyable experience. We particularly enjoyed the experience in the Antarctic snow wind as well as the tractor that gave us an experience of the bumpy ride expected at the Antarctic. they are very flexible, they have 2 sessions of 4d movies to experience and they are different shows and they would wait to start the movie if they are expecting some people back from the tractor ride. The husky show was excellent, the children were given time to play with huskys in the snow area. This is one of our favourite activities in Christchurch.

Couples
We had a great time at the International Antarctic Center on our last afternoon in Christchurch. The location right next to the airport is so convenient. The highlight for us was watching the gorgeous blue penguins waddle and swim around their enclosure, plus the afternoon penguin talk and feeding session. The penguins live at the IAC because for various reasons (blindness, amputations, brain injury or partial paralysis) they are unable to ever be released back into the wild, as they would not survive. The huskies are also rescue pups who are always supervised by their handler, so it is great this place is not keeping intelligent animals in captivity for profit. The Hägglund ride and minus 18 degree wind chill experiences are also fun experices although you do have to keep an eye on your watch and you may have to share the snow dome with a massive tour group like we did. There was a lot to read and see, a novel way to spend a few hours before catching a flight. To save $$, definitely book in advance on the Book Me NZ website, because full price for adults is more than $50 each.

I like visiting science museums wherever I travel. Most have the classic exhibits - a meteorite chunk, animal/dinosaur models, plasma balls, and a room about the local flora and fauna. Here, you will also get to experience sub-freezing temperatures with real wind chill, go "off-roading" in a Hägglund, meet huskies and penguins, learn what explorers had to endure in an inhospitable environment, just to see what was out there, and plenty more to see and touch.

There is a free shuttle to/from the Canterbury Museum (in the city center) on a set schedule, a gift shop, and a reasonably priced cafe. It's practically across the street from the airport and adjacent to actual Antarctic research facilities.

Fantastic place to visit except the cafe

The cafe is disgraceful: they wanted to charge $5 for 100ml of cold milk for a toddler bottle. We would have eaten there after, didnt out of principal. Absoutely appaling even other patrons was like that isnt right!

It put down a great day down to to a bad experience.

Due to a technician creating an electrical fault there was a power cut during our visit. We were told by a lovely staff member that there would be a short delay to get things working again which was fine as they rescheduled the Hagglund ride to fill in time while we waited. We were also happy to watch the penguins for a while. However, after waiting over 50 minutes when I enquired if the 4D theatre was back online the lady at reception snapped back a incredibly short and rude reply. We were not offered a discount or refund nor kept informed on the continuing delay. I really feel that the $49 per adult ($98 for us two) was very pricy for the shortened experiences and rudeness. Had there been more communication and an offer of a refund it would have been a much happier experience.

Cinch up your belt and hold on, the Haaglund ride can be quite jarring; especially watch children’s heads on the interior vehicle walls. You can pet some retired Siberian Huskies outside of the entrance. The rescued penguin feeding was nice, but the staff had to repeatedly chastise kids disturbing the peace (where were their parents?). The 4-D Experience was a cheap ripoff of Disney ride. The Snow Dome windstorm wasn't worth the wait. The movie was about 15-minutes of disjoint spliced videos with no narration. Other exhibits were suitable for pre-teen children; bring some hand sanitizer to counteract all of the kids coughing and sneezing. I wouldn’t even recommend this place for a rainy day; despite the good work that they appear to be doing, it’s not worth the price of your admission.

A great place to visit for all ages. If you time it properly you can get to experience the Hagglund ride as well as the penguin feeding without too much of a wait. Our Hagglund ride was at 14:40 and the penguin feeding at 15:30 and we sandwiched the 4D theatre in between. One negative is that with limited visitors currently the cafe was only offering limited offerings so don't plan on getting a meal there!

We arrived just in time for the morning feeding of the penguins. The custodian who was feeding them was very informative and amusing. She told us about the individual penguins and their personalities. She feed those who were happy to take fish from the water first before feeding those who were to nervous to do that. That included one little penguin who is scared of the water.

This is one of the best family activities in Christchurch. Having been as a child it was great to be able to take my own child and nephew for the first time. We went on the very first weekend after lockdown and you would never have known it was closed. Staff were top notch and extremely helpful and knowledgeable and the area looked exactly the same as it had previously.

We got to enjoy the 4D movie which my nephew loved, watched the penguin feeding, the storm in the snow room, and our favourite part which was the Haglund ride.

I strongly recommend visiting while you are in Christchurch, especially if you have young children, our nephew couldn't stop talking about the place!

We were hoping to visit Akaroa, but the weather was too cold for that. Instead we decided to come here, mainly to see the little blue penguins. They happened to be offering discounted tickets for the 30th anniversary of the centre, so that was a nice bonus.

We did the main activities here and enjoyed them all. We weren't able to catch the 4D movie as the showings were not very frequent. My daughter did the behind the scenes tour with the penguins as well. Given that most of us will never visit Antarctica, this is the next best thing!
