What an excellent experience! We were collected promptly as expected in a lovely van driven by the equally lovely Dean who whisked us away to Picton to meet the boat. He explained along the way what would happen for the day. We were to be taken on a tour of Queen Charlotte Sound and we would meet up with Dean back at the dock after the boat ride.
Everything went exactly as he had said it would with the exception of the weather- which had decided we’d seen enough of the South Island’s beauty and were now being confined to wind and clouds. It was an informative trip and we were collected by Dean when our boat arrived.
We headed to a delightful cellar door where we had lunch and sampled various wines- followed by a glass of wine of our choice. We headed off to two more cellar doors after lunch and sampled more wine. The day was filled with very knowledgeable commentary from Dean and the cellar door employees. The genuine relationships between Dean and all of the cellar door employees was evident. You can’t strike up decent relationships like that if you’re not doing something right.
By the time we were dropped back to our hotel, we were thoroughly satisfied with the day we had had.
If you’re wondering whether this is a worthy use of your day while you’re in the Marlborough wine growing region, wonder no more. It’s fun, educational and well worth the money. I absolutely recommend it.

The Wine tour was top drawer and the lunch was much more, a full meal with paring wines. The Catamaran cruise was simply accompanying delivery route to deposit their customers and their baggage to various locations. Unfortunately for us, it poured rain and visibility was dismal at best. not your fault, but, considering that the catamaran went out twice a day anyways, it should have had a postponement privilege. The weather was beautiful the next day!

Hi thanks for reviewing the tour, it was unfortunate that it rained that day and if we know it is going to pour with rain we do offer to change the tour for people to the next day if we can make it work. I'm sorry I didn't realise that the weather was going to be full on rain that day as I normally do look ahead. Great to hear you enjoyed the wine tour.

Catamaran Cruise around the sound was great, despite the cloudy, rainy weather! Great views! Wine tour with Phil was AMAZING! Lunch at Saint Claire’s vineyard was fantastic - superb food! - and Kelly was friendly but very knowledgeable regarding the wines. Visits to Framingham, Nautalis and Whitehaven wineries all very informative and with great hosts, wines and info. Highlight of the day was Phil...what a star! Nothing too much hassle and full of excellent info and knowledge. Highly recommend this tour.

The well-informed & friendly guides (& boat captain) go some way to making up for a somewhat underwhelming experience. The catamaran tour is primarily a rather tedious delivery & collection process, serving hikers. There is only one 15-minute stop in 3 hours where one can disembark & see anything.
The lunch & wine tasting is better, but don't expect to learn anything about the vineyards. Essentially, it's just a series of tastings of pleasant wines. No history. No process. No insight.

Hi Dave, thanks for your review, we understand that the Ultimate Day Out isn't for everyone as it is only a touch of the many things that Marlborough has to offer rather than an in depth tour that would give time to delve into the wine alone. To get a full understanding of the wine region you might want to try one of our full day wine tours if you are in the region again. Thanks Jess

Best way to see Marlborough Sounds and the wine region of you don't have much time. 4hrs cruise around the sounds in the morning, including a stop at Ships Cove. Great commentary from the boat driver. Tour of the vineyards in the afternoon was equally enjoyable, visited 4 different cellar doors showing the variety of growers. Our tour guide Jess was amazing and really knew her stuff. The lunch at St Clair Vineyard was definitely a highlight.

Picked up from our cottage at St Leonard's Vineyard and taken to Picton for a 3 hour catamaran cruise. Highlight was seeing the dolphins.
Once back on shore we met up with Nic for the rest of the wine tasting tour, starting at St Clares Vineyard. The wine tasting was very informative but the food was to die for.
Visited a further two vineyards, Spy Valley being our favourite, so much so we bought 2 bottles.
Would highly recommend this tour, with or without the cruise first. Nic was a fabulous tour guide who had an answer for all our questions.
Great day which will stay in our memories for a long time.

Fantastic over all experience! Dean and Ernie were legends and did a fantastic job. Nothing was too much of an ask and they really went the extra mile to make sure EVERYONE had a good time and feel involved. The farms we did visit were awesome, great wine all round. Lunch at Saint Claire was amazing! Great food and setting, would definitely recommend eating there.
The cruise was great too. Very interesting and great to mission around the sounds and to see Captain Cooks landing. I think the only negative was that the day was quite long. We would recommend doing 1 activity a day. The cruise is fairly long as well as it is not dedicated to the people "viewing" the sounds, it stops off, collecting and dropping off people, so doubles as a bit of a water taxi.
We would recommend Marlborough Wine Tours any day!

This full day tour provides an excellent way to see this beautiful region by sea and land. We were picked up by Gavin from our B&B at 8.30am and dropped at the Picton wharf to join our catamaran cruise. The journey took us right through the Sound to Ship Cove, and along the way we saw fur seals, dolphins, and albatross.
Ship Cove is a very pretty historic site where Cook landed for repairs.
We arrived back in Picton at 12.30 pm, and were taken to a good winery for lunch and tastings. This was followed by comprehensive, educational tastings at two other boutique wineries and a chocolatier in the Marlborough valley, and we were dropped back at our accommodation before 5pm.
Our wine guide, Gavin, was highly knowledgeable and very professional. We had a most enjoyable day and would recommend this tour wholeheartedly.

We had a great day, first out on a catamaran which was a lovely trip. Then off to 3 wineries which had been carefully chosen around the wines that we both liked. The trip was very well organised and all staff were very friendly and warm. Dean was extremely knowledgeable and made the whole experience. Would definitely recommend.

Do you pick up from campsites a few mins out of town, either Picton or Blenheim? E.g. whatamango bay or robin hood bay? Thinking of either doing full day or the catamaran full day. Thanks
