- jilldegilio0 contributionsMagic!!!!!Not enough superlatives to describe the actual experience and the passion and enthusiasm of both our bus driver and guide. An hour and a half went so fast and I didn’t want it to end. I found meeting the artists fascinating and inspiring and the hands on activities added an extra dimension to the tour. The video interspersed with our actual guide was also interesting and informative - I personally loved the story of how Wētā started and how it got its name. I am telling everyone to do the tour - and I am not a person who generally enjoys guided tours!! My husband is hearing impaired and he was able to hear and appreciate most of what was said and presented. Guide wore a microphone and videos were captioned - really appreciated this aspect. Thank you for presenting a magical world of talented artisans and a vision that became a reality. Loves every minute of it. I wish I was young and talented and could get a job there !!! 😀😀Written March 14, 2025
- Wander496255990140 contributionsWeta is MagicFrom the comfortable pick up vehicle, the informative commentary pointing out landmarks and the extensive history of the incredible Weta story we knew we were in for a truly awesome experience. We had plenty of time to explore the shop and then gathered for the tour. We got to glimpse the magic that is entertainment and it was awesome.Written March 8, 2025
- Fredrik P0 contributionsAs cool as expected!Great experience if you’re into Lord of the Rings and movies/movie making. Our driver set the mood with Hobbit score in the car, and our Hobbit-looking host, Hazel, did a great job giving us a tour. - 766ronaldb0 contributionsWeta WorkshopAfter visiting the Māori Village, we traveled to the WETA Workshop in Wellington, NZ. This workshop is the home of special effects and props for the movie and the board game industry. They are well known for their work for the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) and Hobbit series, as well as the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. It was very interesting to see their amazing products. Stand next to them and to handle some of the detailed props used in these movies. We also toured several nearby locations that were used to film the movies. Be advised that photography is limited to just a few locations within the facility. Since I was unable to visit the Hobbit village, this was the closest I was able to get to the Hobbits. Well worth the visit.Written February 9, 2025
- Traveler547595721390 contributionsInsights into the world of fiction moviesThis was an interesting experience with first-hand insights into prop making and special effects. If I were to add something, considering the fact that people cannot take pictures with their favourite movie characters/props, I would try to provide more interactive options.Written February 1, 2025

- sueF8910 contributionsWeta tour tripInteresting . Group timed guides into the worshop. Saw many props from many films and series . Done a very quick workshop using just foil! Not enough time to do much. Hoping to see some special effects make up and the line but none available that day although we did have an explanation on how they do the prothestic masks. It was good but very quick tour of 1 hour 30 mins . Recommend for lord of the rings fans as lots of props .Written January 23, 2025

- Gene M0 contributionsWētā Workshop is a must-see!Right from the start of the guided transfer by bus, you felt like you were getting a special peek behind the curtain at the magic that is Wētā Workshop. Because we had some extra time, we stopped at the Roxy Theatre on the way which included seeing all the LoTR, Thunderbird and Oscar related exhibits, alongside the beauty of the art deco movie theatre. The tour of WW was well organised and demonstrated so much of the history of the special effects, props, prosthetics etc… from LoTR and nearly 300 other movies, created by WW artists. Fascinating and so interesting. It did not disappoint!!Written January 12, 2025

Entertaining -1.5 hr tour. The tour guide was very entertaining as well as the video of the studio founders. Tour was scripted well. Very limited photo taking allowed. Some handling of props and photo op with prop was worth the extra cost esp if you prepay this. Took a taxi from downtown at cruise shuttle dropoff. -50$ NZD one way. 20 min each for shuttle and taxi due to morning rush hour. Tour started at 9:20 which was earlier than the bus tours so less crowded in gift shop and shorter queues at the three toilets.
Get there early to peruse the fantastic sculptures and figurines for sale. Some statues were sold out. They can ship your purchases. Four figurines shipping quote to California costs $75USD. We opted to buy luggage instead at Strandbags downtown since we had other stuff to carry home.
When departing Weta, UBER app did not work but caught a passing taxi. One cruise couple on same Weta tour said they used public bus to get to Weta caves which is amazing.

This is a great experience. I am a self-confessed Lord of the Rings enthusiast but my wife is not, and she still had a good time. Don’t come here if you are expecting to be able to wonder through the actual workshops taking photographs of props being made. However, the tour which lasts about 90 minutes does give you a really good idea about what WETA does and you do get to see into the workshops and get to pick up some props which were used in the films. So they have the actual Sauron’s armour and the actual Sting sword (some readers of this will have no idea what I’m talking about!). Our guide was called Flynn who was very engaging and a self-confessed nerd. He had a BA in film animation I think. So he knew all about the films and was able to point out various things which were used not only in Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit but in lots of other movies. He had all the information at his fingertips but managed to pass it on with enthusiasm rather than nerdiness! Basically you walk around a series of rooms with artefacts on the walls some of which you can pick up and photograph (so there are some photographic restrictions which are understandable). From time to time videos from the founders for the Studios pop-up and tell you information about the process of model making. They also take you through a number of stages in making masks, weapons etc and Flynn demonstrated the process on real proof. There were also a couple of Model makers who talked about how you can make models at home. All in all it was a great experience. Also it’s suitable for all ages – there was a family with small children who really enjoyed themselves with a treasure hunt theme going through the tour. Definitely recommend.

This place was absolutely incredible, lifelike statues surrounded the building, inside the gift shop contained rare and elusive LOTR merchandise and the whole place was a nerdfest galore!
Now normally I dislike guided tours, preferring to go at my own pace, but just like Hobbiton, this wasn't that bad. We were in a small group, arriving before peak hour and had enough time to perfectly absorb and appreciate each exhibit we saw, while additionally having a tour guide who appeared visibly content, unrushed and as a result happy to answer any questions we had at any point throughout the tour. Albeit, I would advise everyone that there are areas where you can't take photographs, presumably because it's against Weta's contractual obligations, so don't be disappointed if you can't visually memorialize every exhibit. In saying that, there are plenty of areas where you can record and photograph to your heart's content, so I wouldn't be overly concerned, nor befallen over the restrictions.
It'd also be criminal of me if I didn't mention how incredible and meticulous the process of making these statues, props and whatever else was. For those of you who are unaware, these guys contributed immensely to LOTR and The Hobbit, making the swords, facial masks, ect, and it really shows! If you are nearby Wellington, but don't have the time to come to the Weta Workshop, then I suggest going to the Gallipoli museum in the city and seeing some of the lifelike sculptures, which is an example of what the Weta Workshop produced.
Overall, this was an incredible place. While I was initially wary about the prospect of a guided tour, my doubts were immediately alleviated and assuaged by the staff, whose unerring passion for their job was contagious, and who were clearly proud of their awe inspiring work.

Overall, this place didn’t quite meet my expectations. I think it’s more suited for families, groups, or movie fans who would enjoy learning about models and designs. I’m not a movie fan, but as a recent design graduate with a focus on 3D and animation, I thought it might be interesting for someone like me who appreciates that kind of work.
I took the introductory tour and attended the sculpting workshop. The tour felt more like sitting in a classroom, with visitors listening to long presentations—90 minutes instead of the usual 5-10 minutes you’d expect in a real class, which dragged on. You can’t take pictures, which I understand because of copyright issues, but as a tourist attraction, they could invest more to create a larger, non-copyrighted space. It’s pretty cramped at the moment. At the end, they take your picture and give you a code to download a watermarked photo for free, or you can print it for NZD 20.
The sculpting workshop was a slightly better experience. The instructor was friendly and always smiling, and we got to take the clay home, which was nice. But apart from that, I didn’t think it was worth the cost. If you’re into DIY and have tools at home, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s more for tourists or people who don’t work in creative fields but enjoy these types of activities. You’d save a lot by just buying some play dough and watching YouTube tutorials—you could still have a fun time with friends for a fraction of the price.

Kia ora,
Thank you so much for your review, we appreciate the time taken to do so.
We are sorry to hear that our tour did not meet your expectations, and that you felt that it dragged on and was cramped. Our goal is to have all of our guests actively engaged throughout the entire 90 minute duration of the tour. Was there a specific area of the tour where you felt that it was especially drawn out or camped?
We are always looking for ways to improve our experience for guests, so any further feedback is appreciated.
In regards to our Magic Memories photos, there are two free un-watermarked photos available if you scan the QR code, it requires you to scroll to the bottom of the page to download :)

Touring weta workshop getting to see and hear all the behind the scenes stuff was so so cool. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I went alone and had a great time. One thing that I really loved was getting a peak into some of the peoples stories of how they got into their craft and wound up at weta workshop, made me recommend a very talented friend of mine to apply! There’s also a great gift shop! I love my weta workshop hat, people keep asking me if I work there when I wear it 😂
I would highly recommend this for any one who is an art nerd, movie buff, or LOTR fan! 💜

After visiting the fantastic Hobbiton film set in Matamata , we were really looking forward to the tour in Wellington. Weta was awarded an Oscar several times for his work, making the very outdated, loveless tour in a confined space all the more disappointing. We booked a guided tour followed by lunch, we had to look for the - very noisy - restaurant ourselves and wait there for an hour for the food despite pre-ordering. Overall, therefore, a very weak performance, this leadership cannot be recommended. Too bad about the money!

My recent visit to the Weta Workshop in Wellington left me with mixed feelings. While the workshop itself offers fascinating insights into the world of movie magic and craftsmanship, the tour experience was marred by several disappointments, primarily stemming from our tour guide, Bianca.
One of the key aspects that left me dissatisfied was Bianca's presentation style. Throughout the tour, it was evident that she was reading from a script, which made her explanations feel rehearsed and lacking in spontaneity. Instead of engaging with the visitors and tapping into their knowledge about the shows, she remained distant and robotic in her delivery.
Furthermore, there was a notable incident that left me feeling unwelcome as a minority ethnicity. When my group was first in line for an activity involving a sword, Bianca seemed hesitant to pass it to us, which was disheartening and made us feel excluded.
Another instance that soured our experience was during the photo-taking session. Despite our excitement to capture a family picture, Bianca snapped the photo while our faces were partially blocked by the props we were posing with. It was a missed opportunity for a memorable keepsake, and it left us feeling disappointed.
Moreover, there was a discrepancy between our expectations and the actual tour content. We had hoped to delve into the intricacies of how blood and scars are created, expecting a visit to the makeup department.
Despite these shortcomings, there were highlights of the tour that deserve recognition. The tin foil artist and Mark, the artist who inspired us to create models from recycled materials, were truly exceptional. Their creativity and passion added depth to our experience and served as a redeeming factor amidst our disappointment with the tour guide.

Don’t waste your money on this tour.
Our tour guide spoke too quickly and was not clear. Her accent made it difficult to understand her.
There are only 4 rooms to go through and there is not enough time to see all the exhibits.
Also the one room is “making art with aluminum “? How is this enjoyable or even related?
Overall the “tour” is far too expensive for what they offer. And the gift shop prices are crazy- $50 for a T-shirt.
Very disappointed

Old props relating to movies and tv ahows 20 years old. Everythibg is tired and was no tour of the workshop as we thought. We took the more expensive tour pickup with what was promised to be 2 30 min tours if Wellington in their mini bus. The driver pointed out 2 things and the tour was over in 14 mins. He stunk of cigarettes abd did not wabt to do gis job. He was old bored and tired. A bit like the Weta tour itself. Not worth the money and old abd outdated unless you want ti see soneone shaping tinfoil into crude shapes. So sad.

Hi Shayne,
Thank you for your review. We appreciate the time taken to do so.
We were deeply disappointed to hear of your time during your Wētā Workshop Experience & Guided Transfers and offer a full apology for the guided transfer part of your time with us.
Regarding your feedback on the items we have on display, we have chosen to showcase these particular props due to our lengthy history of almost four decades. We look to cover a variety of projects from the years. As our most popular contribution to film has been The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was first released 23 years ago, we do intend to service our fans who visit us for projects like that.
As for your guided transfer, your experience there was absolutely not what we expect from our driver guides. Please rest assured that we have spoken to your driver about his conduct and odour. I do however believe your comment of him being old to be unnecessary, something which is irrelevant. Regardless, we have taken their performance very seriously and have made it very clear that the driver is aware of our expectations for the role.
Thank you again for your feedback. It’s invaluable, as we’re always looking to improve our experience.
Kind regards,
The Wētā Workshop Crew
