Meet your expert guide at the Visitors Centre ticket desk. The tour will begin with an introduction in the exhibition and viewing of a short film on the big screen, which describes the significance of the sanctuary and its ground-breaking conservation work. Venture out into the sanctuary to explore along a variety of tracks and trails. Your guide will inspire you along the way with stories about the sanctuary and its wildlife, immersing you in the ground-breaking conservation work happening at Zealandia. Their expert knowledge of the sanctuary will help you make the most out of your experience with New Zealand nature. You will also have the opportunity to see a wide range of native New Zealand birds. Witness the highly intelligent kākā (bush parrot), kakariki, tūī and bellbirds at feeding stations positioned along the sanctuary’s walkways. You may also see the critically endangered takahē, the busy tīeke (saddleback), the bright hihi, tuatara, and green gecko. There will also be plenty of opportunities to take photographs of these amazing avians as well as the surrounding, picturesque landscapes.

Great up-close experience to see NZ wildlife!
What a great, educational experience! When learning about NZ wildlife, this is a great experience to get up close and learn from the great tour guides! We did the night time tour and although we weren't able to 'see' everything that you see during the day, it was interesting as we got to see the kiwi bird several times in their natural habitat, which is the whole reason we did this tour. The tour guide was great - she kept us informed throughout the tour and educated us on the NZ wildlife. Great family or couple experience.

Amazing nature and well maintained and organized hiking tracks
I went there early in the morning till the afternoon and it was awesome. I saw so many different birds and could hear even more of them. No matter where you walk/ hike, it‘s a sound experience in and of itself when you take into account all of the different bird sounds that you literally hear all the time. The tracks themselves are organized and it‘s hard to get lost if you take a good look at the map beforehand, but even if you don‘t, there are many maps with „you are here“ indicators along the way as well. The rainforest like forest that you walk through is also incredible, large ferns, palm trees and various other cool plants surround you at all times. If you are in Wellington, then you definitely have to check it out. I just bought the general admission ticket, which is valid for 48 hours, so I could hike where I wanted to but you can also book a tour. Overall, I definitely recommend visiting the ecosanctuary and just see it for yourself.

      Nature IN YOUR FACE
Your part of the exhibit view rare New Zealand birds and reptiles face to face on the trails or onboard the cute boat. An amazing story of restoration and also prehistory larger than life on the screen.

A Bird and Nature Oasis in the City
The birds were literally by their signs! This was such a great way to experience nature in an urban setting. I loved it, and there is so much to learn. The free shuttle was very helpful (be careful to check the timetables because only one of the lines keeps going later in the afternoon). If you're looking to see kiwis, I would recommend coming for a night tour. We missed it unfortunately, but it sounded like they have the gear and experience to be able to find them.

      An unmissable attraction in Wellington
A superb experience giving an incredible insight into the native flora and fauna of New Zealand. The trees are filled with birds singing which made for fantastic photos and videos. Highly recommend travelling up towards and beyond the upper valley as the paths were so quiet.

This was my favorite thing in New Zealand!
We had an absolutely fantastic night tour in Zealandia and I would say it was the highlight of the month I spent in New Zealand. Staff were very accommodating and communicative from the time of booking. We arrived fairly early for the tour and it was a little bit confusing to figure out where to go for entry, but it was really neat just waiting in the parking lot and hearing all the bird calls. There was a guide taking us through the park as well as a Zealandia volunteer that went ahead to try and find wildlife for the group to see. If you have any interest in New Zealand wildlife or conservation I think this is an absolute must-do, and if you do the night tour you can come back in the day for free (which we did, futher solidifying Zealandia as the best thing I did in New Zealand - it's a very different place in the daytime but just as full of life as it is at night). My only two frustrations were that our guide made a couple of anti-zoo comments which stung since zoos are absolutely on the front lines of animal conservation and share the same goals as Zealandia. The other frustration was the behavior of the group, which I realize can be difficult for the guide to control, but it might be helpful if the guides repeatedly emphasized that everyone will have better wildlife viewing if everyone stays as quiet as possible. That said, the guide coincidentally spoke Hindi and was able to provide a bilingual tour for some guests who otherwise seemed to be struggling a bit with the information and instructions, and I was extremely impressed by that. Overall, I couldn't have enjoyed the tour much more. At Zealandia I was able to check off nearly every NZ critter I wanted to see, all in one place. It's truly magical there.

      Night Tour - amazing!
Go, just go on the night tour! We had a fantastic night tour experience recently with Caitlin (sp?) and Louise. We learned so much about the facility and the wildlife residents. We did the night tour and returned the next day to explore on our own and this was a great way to do it. Our night tour group was very fortunate to see a kiwi and takahae. Loved this experience, a highlight.

Fantastic free shuttle from 2 starting points, wonderful habitat restored
Thank you for the shuttle to enable visitors and locals to come up here. The habitat had walks for all types of fitness or families. Very busy cafe with nice, but disorganized young people trying to manage it the day we were there. We did the self guided daytime and saw several birds. The movie was started by a guide who was taking a walking tour through or we couldn't have seen it. The short films on exhibit were very helpful. Enjoy!

      Don’t miss
Truly a highlight of our trip! Two guides and the two of us walking Zealandia for 2.5 hours. What a tremendous undertaking Zealandia is, and what a success it seems to be. Starting at dusk, we first got to witness the birds, many of which were endangered, coming back to the preserve to roost. Nico led the way, accompanied by Ruth, and identified species by appearance, flight patterns and call. At dark the adventure truly started. Aided by infrared lighting Nico showed us birds, lizards, insects and, best of all, 5(!) separate kiwi sightings! We can’t recommend this highly enough and the private tour added to the experience.

One of the highlights of NZ. A must for bird lovers!
One of our favourite days in NZ. The reserve was incredible and we saw so many birds and tuatara! I wish we could have gone on one of the guided tours at night. It was great!

      Peace in the city centre!
Beautiful reserve in the centre of Wellington. We saw tuataras, tuis, north island robins, saddle backs etc. We were able to find quiet spaces to listen to the bird song and enjoy a number of different trails.

      Do Not Miss!
Our guide, Amanda, and volunteer scout Anthony made sure we had the most amazing visit. Amanda was very knowledgeable and Anthony scouted ahead so that we were able to have encounters with the wonderful wildlife. We were fortunate to see three Kiwi - sigh! Zealandia is a fabulous place and we were glad to be able to visit and support the protection of the various species that reside there. Going at twilight was extra special - I'm so glad we chose this tour.

      Worth day and night visits
We had a pre-arranged night visit to Zealandia, which was very interesting. Our guide was obviously passionate about the sanctuary, and we were lucky to see Tuatara, roaming free, as well as a kiwi, which made the night visit very special. We discovered that our night visit allowed us entry for a few days, so the next day we also made a (free of charge) daytime visit, which was also very enjoyable. This time, we went without a guide, and just 'wandered', but we saw many different birds we had not seen during the night tour. The sanctuary is doing great ecological work, and is definitely worth visiting both during the day, and at night, if you have the chance.

Cool night tour, but group too large
We met our guide Sara, who provided us with flashlights and headsets. It was a nice walk with the owls calling and the glow worms the highlights for me. 12 people were way too many - you could hear through the headset but, if you were at the back of the group, it was easy to miss what the guide was seeing.

Great cafe and beautiful nature walk!
We had a night tour booked, which gives access all day. We started with lunch at the cafe - delicious, creative food! We walked about two hours on well-maintained trails and saw lots of bird life, including takahe. You could walk around for hours, with trails ranging from easy to difficult.

Although Zealandia is still in its infancy and the bush and birdlife are still regenerating, we enjoyed a two-hour tour.
We were perplexed by the enormous building at the entrance, I don't know what that building cost but perhaps the money would have been better spent on the wildlife. We went expecting to see wildlife, not a white elephant!
Overall, it was a pleasant way to spend a few hours but we felt Pukaha National Wildlife Centre (Mt Bruce, Masterton) offers a much better experience.

Kia ora and thank you for your review! We're so glad you enjoyed your tour. Our Visitor Centre holds our front desk, cafe, exhibition, and functions space - all of which allows us to earn revenue to support our conservation efforts. Pukaha is a wonderful place to visit and support - though quite different to Zealandia in that it is a breeding sanctuary for native wildlife with several enclosures. Wildlife at Zealandia is wild and free to roam - which makes spotting rare creatures all the more rewarding. We hope you will visit again in the future! :)

A Jurassic Park of NZ with friendly creatures! Stunning! Make sure you dedicate a day for this. Tours are 11.00, 12.00 and 1.00. but one can walk the trails self-guided, with a map and interactive stations. The main ‘easy’ trial take about 2 hours return on an easy gradient. There are others more challenging. The native bush gives a feeling of what it would have been like when the first pakeha arrived. Make sure to visit the displays before beginning the walk.
Cafe serves up some tasty food and plenty of it.

Used Wellington as our base and stayed at the Movenpick. We recommend Te Papa. We visited 4 times during our stay and could easily visit it again. We also recommend the zoo to see some of the many NZ native animals, including the Kea, Kiwi and Tuatara. From Wellington we caught the ferry to Picton, which is a delightful small town, surrounded by water and sounds. We had a tour on the Marlborough Sounds and a guided tour to three wineries. After another couple of days in Wellington, we hired a car and drove to Napier, about 4 hours from Wellington. The countryside is stunning, hilly, green and the road winding. Greytown is worth a stop for a break. In Napier you will find the best art deco architecture. After a catastrophic earthquake in the early 1930's it was rebuilt in the art deco style. We travelled to Hastings for more wineries. For a stunning view of the coast and some very zigzag driving, go to the Bluff for a great outlook. For a less dramatic drive, head out to Clifton for more scenery.

We visited Zealandia as part of an organised cruise excursion and it was an inspired choice. Basically it is Jurassic Park in reality. A designated area on the outskirts of Wellington has been enclosed in electric fencing having been cleared of predators that are not indigenous to New Zealand. The tour included a local guide who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic with regard to the local flora and fauna. Do not miss this attraction in windy Wellington.

What an amazing get-away from the city but so close and convenient! We had an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide (Gabriel) who taught us so much about the sanctuary and the birds. We loved this tour so much that we brought another couple there the next day! It was great after the tour to spend time on our own and hike all the trails which afforded us the privilege of seeing even more birds. We absolutely loved this adventure and afterward walked through the botanical gardens back to the city. A fabulous day!

The best thing about this location is the concept of natural environment renewal in an easily accessible place. The goals are realistic -long term. The project has been well prepared and is not racing to gain success in a short period.
As a non New Zealander, it is really important to have a guide. The birds are often dull in colour and I know I could not have spotted them and other wildlife alone despite experience in other settings.
Free shuttle bus from outside the Information Centre in town means you can get there if you allow time from a day in port on a cruise ship as we did.

We took a 2 hour guided tour, which in our opinion is the best way to go. You watch a movie prior to the tour which sets the tone for a wonderful experience. By doing the tour your guide will be able to locate more species of birds than you couldon your own (unless you are expert of course). Our guide was very informative and you could tell his passion for his job. We were able to see a lot of interesting birds including the Kaka, Takahe, HiHi, Tui and the Kakariki, really amazing. If you have time after your tour you could spend many more hours here since there seem to be a lot of walking and hiking trails. A nice area to get out of the hustle and bustle of Wellington proper.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed and split into small groups to enter the reserve. Throughout the tour we were given loads of information, had wildlife and plants pointed out, encouraged to ask questions and generally well looked after. The tour was easy paced and apart from some steps, which could be avoided if need be, it was ok for all ages.

The work they are doing here is excellent and is well worth a visit. There was a film afterwards about the project, and a nice cafe and gift shop. At the end we were sincerely thanked for visiting.

We spent two very enjoyable hours here with one of the volunteer guides walking around Zealandia. We learnt about the origins of Zealandia, saw lots of birds and tuatara and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We'd spent the previous day and many more $ on a tour of the north end of Kapiti Island and this was a superior experience in every way. Take the opportunity to go and support this extraordinary achievement before it is once again overrun by visitors from overseas.
