Wonderful authentic cultural experience. Great to see a living Maori village. The geothermals are a fascinating sight & quite surreal. If you are sensitive to strong sulpur smells thenyou might need to stay away. The Maori dancers and interludes were educative and fun. The guide who walked around the village spoke fluently and explained her heritage well. Despite the long drive - I'd definitely recommend a visit to this unique tour.

Thanks for the review you gave us here at CruiseToursTauranga. The Living Maori Village is a fascinating location and one we love to take our clients too when their cruise ships call in at Tauranga, just an hours drive away. Regards Ian

We really enjoyed the cultural show at the Living Maori Village.. The singing and dancing was beautiful.. They are so talented.. The young lady who led us around the village which has been in her family for generations was funny, informative and a natural..Also Richard, our driver who picked us up to take us on the tour was lovely.. On the way to the village we stopped off to sample honey and ice cream and on the way back he took us to a kiwi fruit farm and we got to sample gold and green kiwi fruit and kiwifruit ice-cream... Yum.. Such a good day.. Well worth going.

Pleased you had a great day with our guide Richard, we try and break up the one hour drive to Rotorua from the port with a few stops along the way at some great little local family businesses. Change to see the kiwifruit orchards and taste the produce. Regards Ian

Visited Rotorua Village and the Geothermal valley on the same day I think it was part of the glow worm tour (which i don't recommend). The village tour was okay. They dance and sing and its very traditional. I liked the Geothermal Valley. Really cool.

Hello NoPassportRequiredFL, our sincere apologies for not responding to your review sooner. Thank you for taking the time to write it and we are pleased you enjoyed the tour overall. We don't visit any glow worms on our tours to Rotorua though so are a bit mystified by your comment however great you enjoyed the geothermals and traditional Maori village and culture. Thanks again and stay safe. Kind regards Kim

We wanted to see Maori life in a real villiage. We were a bit rushed in the villiage and lunch is just a very quick snack - be prepared for quite a bit of driving since villiage a a distance from cruise dock.

Our driver was very knowlwdgeable and gave us quite a bit of info on the trip and New Zealand in general.

Thanks for the review and yes the sights of Rotorua are about a 75 minute drive away [we can not do much about that] but we do take a different route each way so you see more of the landscape and also make a stop on each leg, one at a honey and bee shop and the other a kiwifruit orchard. So we do try and fit in as much as we can on this 6.5 hour tour. We do have longer tours but these are at a higher price, so we try and keep prices affordable for you. Lunch is really just a sample of the traditional Maori hangi, so not really designed to compete with the buffett you are used to on the ship. Pleased you found the guide interesting. Regards Ian

The tour provided by Paora was absolutely brilliant. Learning about how the local community lives and embraces its geothermal environment, as well as the generations that come through really puts in perspective the special maori culture and beliefs they hold. Highly recommend.

Hello Jasetoil2, thank you for posting a review on our page however we don't think it belongs to us as we don't have a 'Paora' working for us. There is a Maori guide - Paora who works for Whakarewarewa Living Village in Rotorua so possibly this review is meant for the Whakarewarewa Trip Advisor page and not ours? All the best :)

A very good cultural experience with the added benefit of the geothermals and geysers. It included a short show of the tribal dances and songs.

Wow! Touring a villiage on top of steam vents and gysers! You can cook all of your meals in the hot pools or over the steam vents! Corn only needs seconds to cook! What a great idea! Meat that is cooked moist and tender! I really enjoyed eating the food cooked this way! You should really try it! Our guide was about six feet tall and would have been scary if he wasn't so gentle. I guess that is why they don't use him in their performance! It would be impossible to be scared of him! But, in their live performance I was impressed with the older man who could make his eyes go big and go in seperate directions while sticking out his tongue and slaping his hands all over his body. I am not sure why beating your self up would make you afraid? Perhaps it was to make a warrior more angry! Loved this place!

We went with Gary on an awesome tour on feb 18 and first of all Karen and Susan and the whole tour company is awesome. Everything so organized and we were guided by Gary and he is so knowledgeable and informative about everything we saw and the history and lore of the country. He is a great driver and made us feel welcome from the very start. We felt like it was a private tour and he catered to our every need. If you are on a cruise just contact them on the website they will meet you with your name on a sign so you can find them a short walk off of the cruise ship. Very nice and clean air conditioned vans. A super value and so worth the price, the Maori village was super with the welcoming ceremony, just call me chief.

Our group of 7 recently had a full day tour with Susanna. I can hardly put into words what an excellent tour guide Susanna is.

Her diesel VW van is clean and comfortable. The audio system is easily the best I have ever experienced on these kinds of tours, and there was no difficulty in following the commentary even in the back seat at highway speeds.

There are several things that I thought made Susanna an excellent guide, but among them would be safe driving, great commentary, vast knowledge, and a genuine interest in seeing that you have the best experience possible. Because we were running ahead of schedule, Susanna added a few stops that were not generally on the itinerary, but were of interest.

We have a nice variety of stops; a kiwi orchard (yummy kiwi ice cream), the Maori village, and two different thermal areas. I thought the tour was organized as efficiently as possible in order to minimize the drive time.

Susanna really knows her stuff, and I don't think you will be disappointed in the least if you book with her. I would give her my highest possible recommendation regardless of what itinerary you choose.

Our departure time was pushed back to accommodate the arrival of our cruise ship, which extended the day somewhat but despite the thrum of operators dockside, Cruise Tours Tauranga were easy to locate thanks to their instructions. We arrived early to check in thus had an hour spare or so to explore the small closeby township of Mt Maunganui. Our drive through the industrial commercial parts of Tauranga were less than spectacular yet delivered us in good time to our first stop, a honey shop which although touristy was quite interesting, full of bees and delicious honey and manuka honey products plus great ice cream!

The drive into Rotorua was scenic, green pastures and wooded hillsides speckled with the obligatory sheep and 'Summer' cows. Our driver, Garry was charming and informative with a gentle manner. This easy going demeanour worried some fellow tour passengers (most from the USA) as there were moments when meeting and timing instructions appeared a little too relaxed.

We arrived a tad late to the Geothermal Village and thus missed the designated tour time allocated to our group. Fortunately, Garry who is an old hand at this, secured our own personal tour guide which meant it was just our group that was quietly escourted throughout this living Maori Village. Michael's touching humility and informative delivery was excellent. After an hour we were deposited at the cultural show which was fun and then onto our Hangi lunch of steamed chicken and veg. Delicious! Everything he promised it would be and just enough to refuel us.

The afternoon was spent at a Kiwi Farm stop - try the juice and kiwi fruit ice creams - and a short amble through the serenely magnificent redwood forests.

As with all tours of this nature, there is a the fainest sense of 'herding sheep through sights' but we knew this when we booked. Independently, our visit to the village and surrounds could possibly have taken more in, but for the day, we certainly covered a lot of ground and experienced some knew tastes along with learning a few more enriching cultural insights. Hence a tour worth doing.
