- TrvlingMyBucketList0 contributionsBeautiful Lake TaupōSail Barbary is a beautiful eco friendly electric sailboat excursion on Lake Taupo. The views were amazing and the lake was calm. Our skipper was extremely friendly and witty, and knowledgable. Really amazing tour!Written December 20, 2023
- Face_The_Elements0 contributionsGreat activity for a rainy dayDespite a rainy day we made our way to the port and boarded our ship in the harbour. The skipper greeted us and took us out on the open water. Even though it’s a rainy day, we received some views of a coastline until we made our way deeper into the lake. Things are pretty hazy, but luckily we were indoors. Once we made our way to the Mauri Rock Carving we heard the tales of the local culture, the carving itself and the meaning. It was a lovely way to spend a rainy day.Written November 9, 2023
- gillj1910 contributionsLovely experience with knowlegeable and entertaining skipperLovely to sail wothout the noise of the engine and to feel we were really sailing with the sails up. The Maori carvings are impressive but also enjoyed being out on the lake. Got quite cold so pleased to be well wrapped up. Have warm ponchos to use if requiredWritten November 5, 2023
- RyderJB230 contributionsGreat Views and Excellent ConpanyA relaxed trip to see the carvings with great commentary. The real bonus is that this tour takes a smaller group than other companies take, which makes the transit more comfortable and provides a much more intimate tour experience as well as a better photo taking opportunity. My husband and I went on this cruise and absolutely loved it. I'm very glad we chose this company over the others we considered.Written July 18, 2023
- CamHodgie0 contributionsThe right choiceWhen looking for a tour of Lake Taupo and the carvings, there were a few options. Ultimately I chose Barbary because I’d been on boats similar to the competition before, and a sail boat felt like more like an experience. I was not let down. Our guide Chris was a great laugh, telling stories and anecdotes the entire trip. We spent a good amount of time in front of the carvings and I even got to have a swim! Bering on an open boat so close to the water is as a great feeling. Super happy with the decision I made!Written March 25, 2023

- Anne B0 contributionsSailing on Lake TaupoWe thoroughly enjoyed our trip on LakeTaupo to see the Maori carvings. We were lucky to have a clear sunny day with virtually no wind, but it was an experience to have the sails up for the trip. Our host was very knowledgeable, friendly and had a host of humerous stories to tell which made the trip even more enjoyableWritten March 8, 2023
- Dodgyeye0 contributionsSailing on Barbary: a phantastic way to experience lake Taupo and the rock carvings.Initially our main aim had been to see the Maori rock carvings in an environmentally friendly way by sailing on Barbary. However, the actual sailing - with a little help from the electric(!) motor - and the funny and enlightening commentary of our well informed skipper (whose name I have sadly forgotten) turned out to be the best part.Written February 27, 2023
- Robarsenalziggy0 contributionsThe best way to experience Lake TaupoHighly recommended. Great way to get out on the lake with friendly and informative skipper. Much better than all the other motor driven craft chugging their way along. Were happy to let us switch trip from the original booking to the next day when the conditions were perfect. That was much appreciated.Written February 12, 2023
- 841jeromec0 contributionsFabulous Afternoon On Lake TaupōWe have an immensely enjoyable afternoon sailing and swimming of the Barbary under the watchful eye of Captain Chris. He was funny, informative and joyously entertaining.Written January 26, 2023
- mljahns0 contributionsTourist trapMixed feelings on this. Communication with staff was good in regards to changes to the vessel type due to bad weather. Unfortunately the company let us know that another large group would be joining our booking so we could reschedule or refund, neither of which worked with our one-night stay in the area. We were under the impression they knew the group but sounds instead it was a young international tour group and so rather than getting the romantic couple cruise to the carvings at sunset we felt like we were on a party bus with loud music and shots. The captain did offer us drinks to make up for it but even being in our 20s the atmosphere was not what we were expecting or wanted. However the captains daughter was very friendly and amusing, and the short spiel once we reached the carvings was informative. Overall it felt like a generic lake cruise with a party vibe to a tourist trap of a carving with not much historical difference. Hard to tell if that was just one bad cruise or if they’re all like that.Written January 19, 2023
- Hilanda630 contributionsThe best experience on the lake! What can I say, yet another amazing trip with Pete on the Kakariki. This has become a regular thing for us and this year we took a whole bunch of additional family visiting from overseas. They loved the experience as much as us. It is easy, relaxing informative and you might just catch a fish or two! If you are in Taupo, this is a must. We will be booking again next time we are there for sure, it is an experience you simply won't tire of. Try it, you won't be disappointed.Written January 17, 2023

Heard about this tour from friends who had done it sometime ago and didn't disappoint.
The Skipper, Pete, was very good and talked alot about the lake, surrounds and the rock cravings.
The trip was a bit blustery but made it all the more enjoyable to sail. The yacht was very comfortable and would recommend to anyone wanting to experience the lake.

Our sailing out to the Maori Carving was a bit choppy and bit scary for us as we had never been on a sailing boat before however our captain was very professional and put us at ease. He also shared some interesting information regarding the lake, carving and boat.
On the way back from the Maori Carving the lake had calmed down completely and it was a beautiful and relaxing experience with wine in hand, pizza and the sun starting to set.

My partner and I had a great time on this scenic cruise. The captain Chris was very friendly and welcoming, providing pizza and a beer on the house. He gave some interesting info about the history of the lake and the Maori carvings as well. We also had the option to go for a swim (although too cold for us!). This trip is great value for money and I would definitely recommend it :)

Lovely way to spend an evening on the lake. Kerry and his team were wonderful - warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. I get nervous on boats but felt very safe throughout. We had a beautiful sunset and of course seeing the Maori rock carvings up close was very special. We also really appreciated the food, drink and warm fleece-lined ponchos as the sun went down. Can't recommend this enough if you're in Lake Taupo. We especially loved that it was eco-friendly, A+ all around! Thank you team Sail Barbary for a wonderful experience!

Ngā mihi Sail Barbary. This is a beautiful way to experience Lake Taupō. It's such a pleasant sail and we loved being able to relax, lie back on the bean bags and enjoy the weather, the views and the yacht itself. This is real value for money. Recommend wearing layers though because even on a seemingly warm day it does get cool out there.
The rock carving of the Te Arawa tōhunga (spiritual leader) Ngātoroirangi was definitely the icing on the cake. I'd previously done this trip with another company and didn't get much of the history at all about the rock carvings and the man responsible for making them happen. I was very pleased that we got some of that this time.
I am a local holiday maker who travelled the world extensively prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, I travel the length and breadth of Aotearoa NZ a bit at a time. What I enjoy most about our outstanding country aside from its sheer beauty, are the authentic and unique local histories that sets each place apart from the next.
It would be so great if you could build on your eco friendly, sustainable experience by introducing into your sails, more local Māori narratives concerning Ngātoroirangi. There are many more historical accounts of this prestigious ancestor, many of which are unique to Taupō and often reference significant land marks such as Mt. Tongariro which can also be seen from the lake (I think).
You'd need to build a trust-based relationship with the people of Ngāti Tūwharetoa first, to get their approval to share their histories because they are the guardians of that intellectual and cultural property. Wouldn't it be great if they had the opportunity to tell their own stories for you? I think that would make this a stand out experience that many NZers would pay more for if it was available.
P.S. You might just need to tidy up the inside of the cabin a bit too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a wonderfully detailed review. We are so glad you enjoyed the local history, it is always such a fine balance trying to share the right amount of information. Everyone views it so differently. You have definitely given the Barbary team something to think about working on in the future. We will try a bit harder on keeping the cabin tidy.

This was our first sail experience and it cannot be any better. We thoroughly enjoyed the sail and the stories by the Captain. The Captain's elaboration and explanation about the lake and the carvings were pretty insightful especially for a new comer. Would certainly recommend this to others. If you are rushing or don't enjoy quiet time this may not be the one for you.

I am not the best sailor but I really had a blast .We began with a short briefing on Health & Safety as we left Port under electric power (yes this is a Green boat)
Pete our skipper is very passionate about sailing and and I learnt a lot on how to read the water and sailing in general.
His knowledge of the Lake it’s fishing spots and Maori carvings is extensive and made for a stand out tour.
You could help yourself to tea/coffee ginger nut biscuits and Pete even had ponchos for those who had forgotten warm jackets (yes it’s cooler out on the lake)
I would recommend this to anyone willing to give it a go 😀😀😀😀

This was an outstanding tour. The guide was very friendly and humorous and made the trip so enjoyable. He shared all his knowledge of the lake and local area. The sailing boat was very comfortable and we got very close to the Maori carvings - as close as the kayaks (on another tour) could, so this was excellent.
I would thoroughly recommend doing this tour as a great half-day out - getting a view from the actual lake itself was memorable and it was very cost effective.

Thank you very much for your outstanding review the team really appreciates it. It is good to know you find us cost effective. I agree Skipper Chris has a great sense of humour and can be very entertaining. A close up view of the carvings can be rare as it is very weather dependent. You must have had a calm day to get as close as a kayak.

What a fantastic trip on Lake Taupo. Group of 8 from all over NZ who were in Taupo for the long weekend. Surprisingly only 1 had actually been on the lake. Highly recommend this trip, it was a cold day so we dressed warmly, skipper was friendly and shared his local and historical knowledge well.
We had originally booked to sail however due to lake levels this wasn’t possible, company kept us informed and moved our booking to another boat.
Highly recommend Sail Barbary
