This was an outstanding tour. The guide was very friendly and humorous and made the trip so enjoyable. He shared all his knowledge of the lake and local area. The sailing boat was very comfortable and we got very close to the Maori carvings - as close as the kayaks (on another tour) could, so this was excellent.

I would thoroughly recommend doing this tour as a great half-day out - getting a view from the actual lake itself was memorable and it was very cost effective.

Thank you very much for your outstanding review the team really appreciates it. It is good to know you find us cost effective. I agree Skipper Chris has a great sense of humour and can be very entertaining. A close up view of the carvings can be rare as it is very weather dependent. You must have had a calm day to get as close as a kayak.

This fantastic voyage started with our phone booking with Tiffany. She was very accommodating and was able to squeeze us in on a moments notice the night before. She quickly communicated with us and ensured we had a reservation for the next day. We met Captain Chris at the scheduled time. He quickly gave us a safety lesson and we were on our way. The sailboat was great. Because it has an electric engine we motored silently most of the time. The wind wasn’t really good that day so sails were used minimally. We had a comfortable seat at the front and the view was stunning. His running commentary was both informative and extremely humorous. Once we reached the Māori carvings he gave a descriptive summary of the history and significance of the carvings. We headed back to the harbor relaxed and refreshed. I tip my hat to Captain Chris ,Tiffany and all the crew at Barbary. Thanks for a memorable experience.

We really enjoyed our trip on Barbary. The skipper did a great job of making everybody relax and enjoy themselves!
We got to experience the feel of a real sail boat and how they move over the water.
We would recommend it to anyone who likes boats and sailing and anyone who would like a not 'too challenging experience of sailing' too.
Thanks so much!

I had confirmed that would go sailing even if it was raining. They confirmed that no matter what I would not get a refund and would be sailing. I showed up and put me on a powerboat, I told them I wanted to go sailing, but a group of 8 had requested to switch to the powerboat from the Sailboat so they did. Everyone else got an email saying it had been changed, but I did not. The windows were foggy and seats too low to be able to see out side. It was not a fun experience at all. Would not recommend unless you have a large group then you get to pick and choose what you want to do. They did not as the rest of us who had booked which we had preferred.

Thank you for providing your feedback. We apologize that our service did not meet your expectations. We will try to do better with our communication. I sent you a private message through Viator as from past experience customers have not received the emails. The email address I receive is a code not a real email address. The Skipper often puts it to the vote at the Boat and unfortunately 8 of the 11 did not want to sit in the rain for 2.5 hours. It is such a shame you did not take the refund the Skipper offered you at that point. Once again thank you for the feedback.

Our skipper was so awesome. Very educational activity for parents and kids. We loved tuning into the skipper sharing the history about the Maori rock carvings and surroundings. My husband and son enjoyed their swim. There were towels and poncho’s on the cruise that the skipper provided. The ponchos are so warm, I didn’t swim but I also wore one of the ponchos as I did not take a warm jersey. Take warm clothes especially if you have the kids with you as it does get really windy. I was able to go downstairs and make us hot drinks, I offered to make hot drinks for the other people who were on the cruise with us as well and felt like I was in my own kitchen which felt so cool. My daughter had her fav blanket and ended having a nap downstairs. We definitely were very comfortable on this cruise. We had so much fun and totally recommend this if you are looking for something to do with the kids or even as a couple or solo. So relaxing and amazing views. Book it and get ready to enjoy!

Wow, thank you! It is so good to read about how you settled in and made yourself at home on our boat. We do try to have a few necessities like towels, ponchos, hats and mittens for those people who are caught out unprepared. The kitchen is really cute, so compact with everything in its place. Thank you for making hot drinks for everyone. Young children often find the movement of the boat so relaxing they have a snooze. The team will be very happy to learn you had such a good experience.

Highly recommended! Excellent trip to enjoy the lake, see the carvings and learn about the history. Our skipper was very entertaining and knowledgeable. The sailing was very smooth and we had freedom to move around the boat. The carvings were impressive but we did not spend a long time there, most of the time was sailing around the lake. We had some squally weather but the boat had space to go below and extra layers to protect against the rain. Easy to book and find and a nice length of trip.

Thank you very much for you recommendation, we really appreciate you taking the time to review us. The team is pleased you found the carvings impressive and Sail Barbary was easy to find and book. When the weather is squally it can be hard to hold a safe position at the carvings. We normally try to give you as long as possible to view them, taking into account other boats and weather.

Took a big group (16) on the electric-engined Barbary cruise, not great weather but a terrific experience in spite of it. Chris the skipper was really informative and obviously passionate about Lake Taupo and its health. Swimming off the boat was wonderful in the clean, clear water. Carvings wouldn't be worth the trip by itself, it's the getting there and back that was great. Highlight of our weekend, enjoyed by everyone from the 80 year old birthday girl to her 9 year old granddaughter. I loved the fact that there was no thumping from a diesel engine (it's electric) because that usually makes me sick.

The experience was marred by some heavy weather. The sailing boat is a great idea but when it is listing and crashing through 2m waves, it is not so good for non-sailors. We were surprised not to be issued with life jackets; in the UK you can hardly go on a pond without one. in some rough 'seas' it felt like we should have had them on the Lake.
Due to the wind we spent about a minute at the carvings, which was a bit of an anti-climax.
The sail back was much more pleasant and the skipper was a fine host.
On a calm day, I am sure this would have been a much better trip, but on this occasion, we had mixed feelings about going.

Thanks Steve It was a good sail. Time at the carvings was limited due to the wind and turn around area but glad to get you there and to experience the carvings and a good windy sail on a boat well equipped to handle what you had and much more. :)

Chris, our captain and guide, was amazing! Informative, helpful, funny - he really put the entire group at ease and created an enjoyable and memorable experience for us. It was amazing taking this trip on a sailing yacht - it was great to "feel" the water and be so close and Chris made sure we all felt confident and safe.

This is absolutely the best way to sail Lake Taupo and the experience was a big highlight of our trip to New Zealand.

My friend and I and her two 14 year old daughters took a trip with Sail Barbary out to the Maori Rock Carvings on a Saturday! We had a great experience. Tiffany booked us on and her customer experience was superb, she also had lots of advice for other things to see and do in Taupo. I would recommend getting on first to get the bean bags at the back end of the yacht or the seated area! The skipper had a good sense of humor and told us where the toilet and life jackets were, also where the free tea and coffee were located! This is a BYO experience so we took our own snacks and should have taken a bottle of bubbles! We fed the ducks that chase the yacht as we sail - this was my fave part of the day. Heading home it got really windy so I suggest taking warm clothing and sun block. Great morning out on the lake. The rock carvings was something I wanted to tick off my bucket list.

Thank you very much for your wonderful review, it was a pleasure to have you sail with Sail Barbary. The skipper does have a cheeky sense of humour and you are correct those bean bags at the back do seem to be a popular place to sit. I am so glad you enjoyed our well trained ducks I think another skipper is working on a seagull, haha. Bring the bubbles next time you come!
