- Amanda T0 contributionsLovely afternoonFabulous. Would recommend:) Mostly gentle downhill walk - fabulous views and a lovely relaxing cruise - including crater and geyser with bus back.Written February 5, 2024
- miniman28040 contributionsA beautiful, awe inspiring and extraordinary volcanic valleyIf I could give this 6 stars I would. I was just so, so thrilled to see this amazing natural wonder. Only 140 years ago the lush, verdant valley was bare, and blasted with ash and mud from the volcanic eruption, which also enlarged the lake. The trip is an easy 3.5 km walk down the valley (you can do some steep climbing on a side trail, but the trees seemed too high to afford a decent view) past steaming lakes, hot springs with their mineral mediated colourful crystals, then a delightful boat ride on the lake. It looks like Wales which was shaped by the same natural processes 450 million year ago - not recently enough for the result to be captured on camera!Written February 1, 2024
- thaisfuncia0 contributionsIncredible parkJust loved the thermal parks on Rotorua! We took a tour to do both parks at the same morning and was a great option. Slow and not rushed. The park is nice and well organized. You have trails to follow and even a bus system to take you back to the main entrance because would be an uphill journey! Not to be missed.Written January 10, 2024
- oehler_mk0 contributionsOverratedA few nice lakes and hot springs but overrated. Some trails closed due to flooding. Difficult to time the walk - had to wait over an hour for the return bus. Could not get onto the boat as booked out on the day.Written January 8, 2024
- Elizabeth S0 contributionsTerribleno working bathrooms, no water fountains, no AC in the buses. this was a terrible experience on a hot day—would not recommend.Written January 8, 2024
- ofresh0 contributionsAWESOME EXPERIENCE! Shout out to Clint!Super fun day walking through the valley! a HUGE out to CLINT for recommending our group to go & enjoy the boat tour as well!!! It was a perfect way to see the geothermal highlights, have an awesome and relatively easy hike through nature and then hop on a boat going around the Lake to get up close to some amazing geysers and grab really cool photos! Definitely the best geothermal spot we went to during our time in Rotorua. If you have the time, 10/10 would recommend. We walked through the valley, did the lake boat tour at the end, and then took the bus back to the beginning of the trail. All in all took us about 3 hours (boat tour is about 50 min itself) while taking pictures and making a few stops. If you’re looking for a geothermal spot to check out in Rotorua, definitely come here!Written January 2, 2024
- lachlantm0 contributionsExcellent valley outingVisited November 2022. Awesome valley to explore, plenty to see, and great option to take the shuttle bus back to the start - great 3 hour outingWritten December 28, 2023
- Amy W0 contributionsEnjoyable outingThe hike is easy... All downhill or flat. There's a lot to see between the start and bus stop 1. There's not as much to see further along but it's still a lovely walk and worth it. The boat cruise is interesting but probably not worth doing on its own.Written November 19, 2023
- Smoltman0 contributionsLots to see and a boat ride as wellYou start your walk on designated trails and end up at a lake where you can board a small boat for a 45 minute tour of the lake. After the boat tour a bus takes you back to the entrance. Along the way you see many small ponds, mini geysers, boiling mud pools and lots of rock formations. It was here in 1886 that a major eruption occurred with a considerable loss of life.Written November 11, 2023
- Jami b0 contributionsWish we budgeted more timeWe only saw the first part of the walking trail, but it was amazing! Frying pan lake is huge and the wind stirring the steam coming off of it is mesmerizing Give yourself a good three hours to enjoy the whole walking trail. You walk down into the valley and a bus can bring you back up. But the bus runs every 50-60 minutes.Written October 6, 2023

- Max G0 contributionsGood Way to See the Volcanic ValleyOn this tour we learned about the volcanic valley that defined Rotorua. The tour consisted of a cruise around the lake, followed by a walk through the landscape to see geothermal lakes and streams. I’m glad we arrived around 9am. By the time we left, the attraction was crowded.Written March 7, 2023
- 309gloriap0 contributionsBeautiful WalkWe loved this thermal area as it wasn’t too crowded and involved a 4km walk through the thermals and forest. The only challenge was getting the bus back as there weren’t many running.Written February 19, 2023

Beautiful, serene location that we were able to explore at our own pace. The boat trip on Lake Rotomahana was outstanding - thanks to the skipper who gave such an in-depth and informative commentary of the landmarks and history of the area.
I thoroughly enjoyed being a tourist in my own country today and highly recommend this fantastic location.

While we were blessed with lovely weather, I imagine so long as the weather was clear Waimangu would be stunning.
I am nowhere near eloquent enough to describe the raw beauty of this amazing place. It is a stroll through unspoiled, natural beautiful native forest with hot water springs, erupting geysers, and steaming streams.
The Mt Haszard hiking trail is well worth the effort if you are have reasonable fitness, sturdy footwear and the additional time available.
The boat trip around the lake is also well worth doing for both the scenery and the informative narration provided by the boat skipper.
Enough to say, if you are fortunate enough to get the chance to visit, you will not be disappointed.

Taking the Waimangu self guided walking tour was a very pleasant surprise. First of all you start your walk at the top of the valley and walk downhill virtually all the way - except for a few of the short side viewpoints. At the bottom or at a couple of pickup points the bus whisks you back up to the top and you've seen this gem in less than 3 hours.
The scenery is outstanding. It's amazing there is so much thermal activity in this small area. They've done a great job getting us up close to this amazing geo wonderland.

From a teenager (many years ago), Waimangu stuck in my mind as the best attraction even. Fast forward more than 40 years, nothing has changed. New Zealand in lockdown Waimangu was open to the few local tourists that came through - the team were engaging and helpful.
It hasn't changed for my early memories, fantastic scenery and history. The added bonus is the cruise on Lake Rotomahana and the history it brings of the Tarawera eruption and the tragic loss of the Pink and White Terraces.
The walk to the Lake takes roughly 2 hours, the cruise times are regular and when you get back a bus will depart shortly afterwards if you aren't keen on the walk back.
Incredible scenery and a must do when visiting Rotorua.

We didn't expect the experience that we got. Superb value for money, loved the long walk down through the valley past the different art on display and seeing all the scenery, craters and bubbling pools. Amazing nature and landscapes, thoroughly enjoyed it and the knowledgable bus driver that picked us up at the bottom was excellent. Can totally recommend it.

We did both the walk and the boat ride. We could see so much in both. The geothermal activity was amazing especially inferno crater. The reopening special price made it a great activity for the price.

Booked and did the full Waimangu experience a few weeks ago. Have visited other geothermal reserves in the area and this one was just as worthwhile as they all differ slightly! Spent two hours walking through the eery yet peaceful thermal features before enjoying the boat ride. Learnt so many new things about the area despite growing up here! Recommend bringing a warm coat if wanting to sit outside on the boat in the cooler months. Overall worthwhile, thanks!

After the frustration at Te Puia where we could not enter anymore unless going on an overpriced guided tour that only leaves a few times a day we found this place by coincidence on the drive to Taupo.
The friendly staff at the entrance explained the sights in the park and recommended visiting the sight with the blue lake (number 18 on the map). We took an easy downhill stroll along the thermal rivers, pools and thru lush forests to reach the said lake. After a 2 minute walk up the steps we found this very nice blue lake. We could enjoy the beauty of the thermal landscape in peace as there were not that many tourists.
We continued for a bit further along the track and then opted to take the free bus back up the hill to the visitor Centre.
A very nice excursion between Rotorua and Taupo.

I did the full walk with boat ride. The initial walk takes about an hour and a half, if you do it slowly, and you basically walk a trail and read from a piece of paper about the sights on the way. You can arrive very early before all the tourists come which i did - and had the place to myself for a bit! There is a longer track uphill which i didn't do as it stated that you needed 50 minutes to complete it. The boat ride was relaxing, but could easily be left out. I would have given the experience 5 stars, but the cafe experience wasn't good. I asked whether there was onion in the wraps and the staff replied "possibly". I have several food intolerances and after her uncertain reply, didn't feel safe that they'd know what was in all the food. They should have access to ingredients lists so they can give proper answers and so people with food intolerances can safely eat there. After such a long walk i really wanted something to eat. Instead, i had to drive all the way into the city to find a place where they knew the ingredients in their food. Was a real downer after the walk.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your experience.
Firstly, please accept our apologies around the uncertain reply you received from one of our staff members when asking about ingredient lists. Rest assured our team are generally well trained and well versed with ingredient lists. A little bit of investigation at our end indicates that the staff member in question on this occasion needed a reminder about how to deal with questions like yours. Sorry that you ended up having to head back to the city for something to eat.
Secondly, seems like your experience of the walk was good and we appreciate having had you come through for a visit.
Hopefully we might see you back again some time in the future - rest assured your dietary requirements will be better met if you were to visit again.

We did the walk and then the boat ride. The walk was interesting as you got to see lots of volcanic activity. While the full walk is 4kms it is mostly down hill, so relatively easy. It was raining when we did the boat ride, so views were not that great. I would recommend doing the walk at $44, however, I don't think the boat ride at another $45 is worth it.

Hello. Are dogs allowed on the hike & boat? We have a well behaved one and always take away anything she deposits.
Written October 23, 2019
We didn't see any dogs and didn't pay attention if there were signs saying no dogs. You may want to try emailing your question. Sorry I can't be of more help.

How long does the self guided walk approximately take?
Written October 10, 2019
Hi, it is supposed to take 1hr45mins from the top where the walk begins down to the lake, at bus stop 3. It took us 2 hours from the top to bus stop 2 which is only about 15 mins before the last stop. We did it at a really leisurely pace as there was so much to see.
The good thing is that you walk all the way to the bottom and get the free shuttle bus back to the top (you can walk if you want).
It really was worth doing.
